I love Purple. Beautiful 💜 Plant. I do not get anything but early rising Sun-& about an Hr. or less all day, then it goes around the side of the house all day. I need shade plants, but passed this on by sharing w/ those who do get sun.😃
Great video. I just got 2 hanging basket of this from the clearance rack. They were so green I wasn't sure if this is what they were. Label only said ,foliage. Glad I got them and found your video, you covered everything . thank you. 😍
Thank you So very pretty. I love them I did find the purple tends to get leggy and needs to be pinched back a lot , but beautiful, you have such good light which I don’t have downstairs .
I was out in my yard and came across this beautiful plant! It’s growing wild in my back yard, & I was curious as to what kind of plant it was. I’m so excited that it is easy to grow and I’m going to be propagating it soon! 💜 Thank you so much for your informative video! 🙏🏻🥰 Your Purple Heart plants are Beautiful!! 💜🪴
Thanks for the great info in this video and your plants are beautiful !! I just asked a co-worker 2 days ago if she could bring me a cutting and she gave me 3 cuttings.I put them in a little jar with some water so hopefully they'll make some roots . I live in OH too by the way.
@@sweetblackeyepeas7363 You can try cutting off the yucky part and try to root again? or take another cutting? I have had them work just pushing the cutting down into the soil too!
does this need more than black earth? my wandering jew is in black earth, sand, lava beads and bark mix. it was what i had in an empty pot and i thought it would be ok as it was mostly black earth. i'm wondering if the purple heart would be ok in same soil mix
I've had my purple hearts in just plain old regular (actually cheap to be quite frank haha) soil for years. I've unfortunately neglected them for way too long and not taken proper care of them (I'm trying to learn and fix it now tho) but these suckers dont quit. Mine grew to literally 8 ft, I have them on a shelf hanging and I had to just kinda loop it around itself but finally chopped it a yr or so back...just chopped them indiscriminately bc they were drooping on my stove top lol, but its grown back like nothings happened. These are VERY hardy plants in my experience. I dnt think your soil mix will hurt them or even be able to slow them down! Lmao
Hi Kim saw one of these at the nursery had no clue what it was just knew I wanted it haha It’s nice to know I can grow it inside as well as outside 😊👍 Your video was very helpful. Thank you so much. Is there any particular type of potting mix you use or does it matter? Thank you again
Why not? I can watch my YT channel on a giant screen and see my plants really huge! And besides, that, what would the other household members do without a TV? Men have to see sports HUGE! Lots of room for my plants too.
Hello Kim. Thanks for the great video. I have seen some articles on folks growing this in ground in Ohio. Do you have any experience with it growing in ground? I wonder if a heavy layer of leaves and mulching would protect them during the winter months.
Could you please help me?? I love my 'Purple Heart Plant' and it does wonderfully outside. However when I bought it in for the winter it started going downhill pretty quickly 😢. I bought a full spectrum grow light just for it, but it is still not doing well 😞. How far away should the light be from the plant? Lowest light level? Mid level? What? My apartment is like living in a cave and at the most, I get maybe 1 1/2 hours of sun in the evening, knock the time back to 45 min on a bright clear day as the days get shorter.... I'm seriously thinking about cutting every bit of it back into cuttings for a fresh start. Help please! You are the only one I have found who has your Tradescantia under lights.......
I have some trouble adjusting mine too. Outside they are good in bright and get really purple, but inside I move and move them until I get the right color. Right now, she is in an area where she doesn't get strong light. Had her under a grow light and she lost her "purple." Now she is about 10 feet away from a window that is sunny from the west. No extra light. If they get lanky, just pinch, root, and grow more. They root for me in 1-2 days in water. Have to control myself from creating too many. Wishing you good luck with yours. (In the video, my house had a basement and those lights and a constant temperature was wonderful for them. Don't live there anymore, no basement. Dealing with slightly higher temps and maybe drier humidity now.)
How close can I have both kinds to the window?! I don’t have a lot of area but I don’t want to kill them by being 2-12 inches from the window, especially during the winter living in Indiana!

I’m so disappointed. I ordered two cuttings of this plant and first tried rooting them in soil, but even after several weeks, nothing happened. The leaves are curled inward at the sides. Then, I tried dipping the stem bottoms in rooting hormone and putting them in water, but only one got a very small root system (stilled curled) and the other one, again nothing. I just re-cut the bottoms to start fresh again. I don’t think they’re dead, but close. I now have them in a pot with soil and am hoping for the best. 😒
Keep trying. Maybe a longer stem portion and be sure it has leaf nodes on it because that is where the roots will grow from. Mine is blooming a lot and I am anxious for it to get warmer so she can go outside for the summer.
@@longhairdontcare3606 My cuttings from water are planted and growing well. In fact, they are growing through the shelving they are getting so big. Not sure what might be the problem. Enough light? Any root growth at all?
Sounds like they're not getting enough light. If the cuttings are small to begin with, loose well-draining soil works better than water. I managed to get a few nice plants out of the spindliest sickliest looking cuttings that were somehow hanging on while growing in water only. (You'd not even recognize them as the same, as the starter plant was so small and pale.) Also for growing cuttings - one or two nodes (where leaves come out of - but with leaves removed) at the base , and at least three leaves above the bare nodes where the roots should start.

The real name is: Setcreasea Purpurea! I have the big one! Wonderful!
I think they are synonymous and refer to the same plant. The Setcreasea is just an older name. But what's in a name, right? Love it as Purple Heart.

I have put them outside for summer, but the first frost kills them. So I just take cuttings and ending of summer.
Most of mine are green and have large leaves.
A few purple flowers

Test the temperature there and see if it gets too cold in winter or too hot in summer. Then place farther away if needed.
