This is bloody GORGEOUS, congratulations on getting it MC! I'll definitely be rewatching this video whenever I want to look at a gorgeous knife. 😍 I think you just displayed a grail that I would LOVE to get ahold of.
The convex edge is needed because of the high hardness. Steel becomes brittle and looses thoughness. Hollow grind would be a better slicer but would chip easily.
That is the coolest, craziest blade I’ve ever seen. The mirror polish right to the zero edge is wild. I hope you cut many things with it. First time I’ve seen a knife over $1000 that I could see myself buying.
its an absolute knockout, and i have a ton of respect for what Rockstead does. Every aspect is a near perfect as possible, and I can't argue with the price like I can with so many knives out there. I just have zero desire to own one. I wouldn't even want to handle this thing without gloves on, so it goes without saying that I would never actually use it. I think just being in the same room with one where I could see it up close for a few minutes is about all I would need. Im sure I will get the chance one of these days. That said, anyone who has the means to buy and actually use one of these is a lucky guy, and hopefully they attained their fortune honestly and respectably. thanks for sharing this beautiful piece of work.
I know & Respect Workmanship of this Brand & Love this Piece , I Own the Dune Effect Higo11, which I Returned 4 Excellent Knives for in a Exchange before Purchase No Regrets "..
ZDP-189 is pretty unique because of all the chromium carbide which adds crazy edge retention along with the ability to be polished easier than high vanadium steels.
That is one sexy knife! i totally get why you are going to carry it. Its gorgeous, its sturdy and they resharpen it for you, so why not? Its a work knife, not a show knife. Enigineering and precision so good it crosses over in to art. Congrats on your purchase and im very envious, its my dream to have a Rockstead too.
It is actually not so super-duper expensive when you factor in that it is available! Many knives are crazy expensive just because they are only available on the secondary market or incredible luck. And the life long sharpening service (for the first owner only!) is also really cool. Simply amazing beautiful.
It's a beautiful, functional knife with that mirror finish and contoured, letter box handle and scales. A Rockstead can be recognized by a blind man. It's expensive, but for a reason. They are a unique brand and it appears they can be EDC's. The profile and grind of the blade with ZDP-189 steel, must give the knife an awesome feel when used, so you have to use it. More power to you for getting it. If and when I can afford one....
the knife that puts an end to the debate as to which is the best steel and edge retention on a knife....lifetime resharpening guarantee on the 0 edge blade shows you the confidence of the best and baddest blade on the market . well done and accurate review. congratulations .
Love the fuller-hole thing on the blade it is really well done. Detail under the pivot where the grooved blade meets the blue titanium is also sick. I have no problem understanding someone getting a kick out of this. If your brain lights up when you grab it to use then go for it.
Late comment I know, but I received my Higo 2 from Recon1 yesterday and thank you for the introduction to this knife. I find it an interesting compliment to my Shiro’s. Thx for the great channel content and your infectious enthusiasm 👍
One of the most beautiful blades I have ever seen. Not “blade” as in the whole knife. The blade alone. It is what I wish all of my knives had. This is much more attractive than any damasteeI. love the fact is has a convex grind. My favorite grind available. I’ll be dreaming about this tonight. Thanks MC.
Good purchase! Great knife! I do have Rockstead Shin and Shu already, but I am really impressed with exactly this model and it will be mine one day too.
After your first review, I couldn’t make up my mind between the ZDP189 and the black YXR7, so I bought one of each, and they are two of my favourite knives! Use it, I use mine as part of my edc rotation (currently 2 Rocksteads, 2 Chris Reeves and a Medford). A knife this expensive owes me a debt, and work repays that. The titanium coating is even harder than the ZDP189, so it’s not like a Case mirror polish that will scratch the first time you use it. Over a year on, my YXR7 remains scratch free, as does my ZDP189 which is almost 10 months old. The handles on mine (the frame-lock Higo & Hizen) do wear a little, but they just look ‘pocket worn’ cool. By the way, I like the clips! I find titanium milled clips rarely work well, but these hardened, premium steel clips are quite possibly the best functioning clips I have on any of my hundreds of knives. They are possibly as refined as the blade that took a thousand years to perfect. The polish and the form are there to aid cutting, prevent corrosion and minimise the risk of chipping. The clip is designed and constructed with the same philosophy. Function first… retention, access, longevity, strength and nothing surplus.
Congratulations on an awesome pick up. I can not imagine production knives getting any better than this knife. I plan to buy one soon. Rockstead knives are amazing
Beautiful knife crazy price! 👍 For those who love the blade profile without the capability of purchasing such an expensive knife, take a look at the Kizer Yukon, it's nowhere near the quality of materials and fit and finish of the Rockstead ,but it is a great knife with the same blade shape as this Rockstead.
While I do appreciate the mirror polish and the high hardness, it's the zero convex grind that makes me really happy. I made a hawkbill garden knife with a convex zero grind out of an old leafspring and it is one of the best performing edges I've ever seen let alone owned.
@MC, 'tis a testament to your character that this beauty won't be a safe queen! HOO-ray! Not that we're not separate individuals, but I pride myself on using everything that I buy, especially if it says "Case" on the box! I like to make a little ceremony of tossing the boxes & packing materials, that's important😁👍❗️
I've got one and I love it, mine is the other color silvefade to gold. One negative IMO is the sharp edge of the CF scale at the lower front of the handle, it's not a deal breaker at all but is something I've noticed when opening via thumb stud...not flicking open but rolling open. This is my only (minor) complaint. I've also got a Hizen and have applied "gun grip" to it because it was just too slick in my hand, doing so practically eliminated the beautiful design but it's now much more functional. Disassembly of these two knives is almost identical to the Sebenza and the size too. Higo = Large Sebenza and Hizen = Small Sebenza...BTW the thumb stud Rockstead has is far better than. the Sebenza IMO The biggest question for anyone considering a Rockstead is it worth 2 Sebenza's. That depends on your disposable income...IF you're a collector no question get the Rockstead.
I'm totally the same way. I end up using pretty much all of my more expensive knives that I thought would just be sitting around. I also know that gut feeling you're talking about. Congrats on the knife.
Once upon a time I thought anyone that would pay the sort of prices Rockstead asks was insane, but apparently I've lost my mind because I almost bought one of these. Just incredible knives. That edge grind and polish is very similar to how a traditional Katana is made. None of mine have a final edge bevel - they all look like the edge on this knife. I really love this model too. I will own one someday. I think I'd try to get a custom timascus clip made for that, were it mine.
I like Rockstead, but I'll probably never get one. I'm not one for carrying a knife solely based on price. Nor do I think it's the best collector's item. I'd rather get some custom knives from a Sheffield maker. Or enough limited edition Opinels to drown in! 😅 Or maybe 1 GEC.
They use a special machine that mirror edges the micro bevel (just the micro bevel not the whole edge, most of the blade is hand polished) so that if you look at it through a microscope there are no grind lines like there would be with any other knife. This reduces the possibility of chiping since there are no weaknesses at the microscopic level. Also the blades are cryogenicly heat treated which makes them even tougher.
Id use it .. but my problem is ,in my lift Jeep I'll set my knife in my lap because it tuff to go back in the pocket. Ill jump out and see my very expensive knives go skidding across the driveway, parking lot . All the time , just did it to a ultratech bhq exclusive. Killed it.
Just wow. That is beautiful. 😍😍😍🤤🤤🤤. The titanium liners…..I can’t believe how much I love the look of that thing. And that blade edge……congrats. Maybe one day, might now be a grail knife.
Considering how deliberate Japanese artisans are, I feel like the pocket clip must be a deliberate choice to tell the user "use this knife. It is a tool."
I’ve been thinking about this knife since you posted this video. I mean thinking way too much. Also been researching and reading reviews. Ok this knife is it. Looks like my 1st grail knife is a doozy!
Beautiful Knife!!!! I couldn't carry it, though, at that price. I'll carry my new Jake Hoback Husky that "only" cost me $575. How does the action compare with a Shiragorov? Which is a better value??? I like the looks of the Rockstead better. Great review!
Buying a Rockstead and not using it is like buying a Grand Seiko and not wearing it. I have a Hizen (black coated) that I carry every day. When it comes time to send it to Japan for sharpening, I plan to buy another Hizen (non coated) and carry one or the other knife every day. I have a large pocket knife collection and the Hizen cleared the field. I am hopelessly in love. And the pocket clip, while not fancy, works better than any other clip I've ever used. If you carry it, prepare to have your field (or pocket) cleared to make room.
Oh my god that is gorgeous but $1500 ugh that be a hard one to swallow. Everyone to their own but if I personally was gonna drop that much it would be a marfione Dirac with hefted body, full polish, star grind blade and blue ano titanium switch and hardware and of course ringed hardware. I never would have thought the ringed hardware would make that much difference but it does.
Being a professional sharpener, this is my favorite type of edge. I put it on most of my edc blades. Convex is the edge of choice for most Japanese master swordsmiths
Hey good for you. What a beautiful knife. I've bought so many $100' to $500 knives and been disappointed. I'll be saving and not buying for a while until I get one. PS I'd totally carry it to.
I know the higo used to not have a pocket clip came in a sheath...So at least it's got a clip now! NICE BLADE MC! 🔥🤤👊 I would rather have the ZDP at 67 and pay a little more than there YXR7 at 64 that might be some of the price increase 👊
I think that's an amazing knife! Please dont take this the wrong way, you have the money, you want and you got it. I have known a lot of high maintenance people in my life, have you ever considered yourself "High Maintenance". It's all good, go for it !!!!!!! Still like your show, and thoughts.
You know; i was watching some Rockstead videos the other week and saw your unboxing for the Higo II; that’s how i knew which model it was when you said it on a video the other day/week.
Well I just spent too much money on the CKF Rotten Evo preorder and some watches (Don't Get Into Watches!), but Rockstead is on my watch list now for when I've.... recovered.
Beautiful knife, worth the price, I'm not really sure. I think I'll keep my limit to Hinderer, RC, Medford, Chave, and such. Anything higher and I doubt I would ever carry or use it.
Is it art only if it is of no use? That fit and finish would make me smile every time I picked it up. Something expensive that continues to be a source of enjoyment is worth having. Enjoy sir.

He finally did it!. It's gorgeous. The carbon fiber is such a sick look. Rockstead is amazing.
The scalloped jimping in the liners is fantastic

A custom personalized upgraded clip is the exact thought I had, the only thing that could make it better!
Well, they are made in Japan. So it would make perfect sense that Rockstead went for a true pocket katana. Thanks for highlighting that.
I bought a Rockstead shin from recon a few months ago. I absolutely love it. They really do live up to the hype.
I like Rockstead, but I'll probably never get one. I'm not one for carrying a knife solely based on price. Nor do I think it's the best collector's item. I'd rather get some custom knives from a Sheffield maker. Or enough limited edition Opinels to drown in! 😅

With that beautiful mirror finish I would be afraid to even use it for fear of scratching it. Magnificent knife. Enjoy.
Glad your gonna use it. Its sharp for a reason.
Congratulations on accomplishing a huge personal goal!!

👏👏👏👏👏 This is a proud moment!
My Rockstead Shin is one of my favorite users! Enjoy bud
Stunning! A folding Samurai Sword. It looks like it is worth every penny.
Gorgeous. Don't know if I'd be able to bring myself to use it.
I would use it but i wouldn't carry it at work in fear of misplacing it.
@@lovescamaros1 Yep, it's alot of money clipped in your pocket.

Just wow. That is beautiful. 😍😍😍🤤🤤🤤. The titanium liners…..I can’t believe how much I love the look of that thing. And that blade edge……congrats. Maybe one day, might now be a grail knife.
Seems that the polishing of the blade can compete with Grand Seiko‘s Zaratsu polishing. Maybe it was done with a similar or even the same technique.
Considering how deliberate Japanese artisans are, I feel like the pocket clip must be a deliberate choice to tell the user "use this knife. It is a tool."
Yep my thoughts exactly
I have the Rockstead Ryo buttonlock and i love it

MC the rock stead is one beautiful blade congratulations on your new knife purchase hope you have many great years of usage out of it!!!!!
Wow..congrats!!! That polish looks amazing and like the fuller design feature.
Awesome Brotha, if I ever could get a Rockstead I'd want the gold/bronze version of that 🗡️ knife🗡️. They are so beautiful and that edge is 😍amazing 😍
