Those people who are critical of these organizations are focusing on what they heard not what they know. You would have to be a member to truly understand what goes on. There is no idol worshipping as you would have others to believe. As far as I know, this Minerva was a mythical goddess of wisdom which is a characteristic. Christians are not encouraged to worship her, but to take on a spirit of wisdom. The Bible advises us to apply our hearts unto wisdom. Proverbs 2:6, believe says, "For The Lord gives wisdom, out of His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. " All of the Fraternities and Sororities I know do follow the teachings of Christ such as caring, giving, helping the less fortunate etc. We have programs in place that encourage Economic growth, we promote health awareness and sponsor free mammograms for those women who can't afford them. To be technical, in the late 1800s and early 1900s when black folks were starting to get put into "negro colleges" a lot of them still had kinky hair. A lot of your early colleges for black women like Spelman were started by white missionaries and part of their program was to "cultivate" black women, which meant promoting white beauty standards. Then came Madam CJ Walker in the 1920s and by then the damage was done. This is why photos up to the early 1900s show many African women in the US still with Afro textured hair. And of course most African American sororities and fraternities started in the early 1900s. And many of them were just imitating the SUPERFICIAL aspects of white fraternities and sororities without any of the power and wealth of those groups, which itself was based around white racism and many times most of the lore of these white groups was based around non white history.
