    Great picks. JA2 and BG1 are games that I still playthrough every few years.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  3 місяці тому

      Both are great! Though I would argue that from a purely gameplay point of view, JA2 has to be able to offer more unique playthroughs, as each can be considerably different than another. And there's only so many ways you can complete first BG...
      I wrote that, I read that, and it's stupid. Given the sheer number of classes and character combos you could have in your team, I would like to retract my above statement, and just nod in agreement to what you said/wrote. ;)

    Something that really stood out for me with Homeworld was the voice acting. The subtle emotion in a lot of the voice work after returning to find your home planet burning combined with the Adagio For Strings music was just so incredibly effective.

      Agreed. I bought the game a few years ago and played up to that point, and found myself so moved by the situation/atmosphere that I needed to take a break. I never returned.

      Was it Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings? What an epic piece of music that is, very sombre.

    - Need for Speed high Stakes: to this day the best NFS game ever, it's mechanics still unmatched today.
    - Unreal tournament: revolutionary FPS
    -Roller coaster tycoon: unmatched programing and best tycoon game ever.
    - worms Armageddon
    - Commandos?
    I think 1999 could be the best year for PC gaming ever...

      No, wasn't. Just high res version of old video D&D Gold engine games like Dark Sun. Ahead of its time was Lands of Lore 3: game that tried bringing immersion by visuals and gameplay, not by modeling gameplay via dice rolls and walls of text. Every npc (except generic guards or monsters) had it own 3d voxel sprite (same technology used in Blade Runner but more detailed) with own gestures, mimics and voice acting. Levels detailed with high res baked shadow maps, not worst than those used in second Half Life . No Exel- like skill system, every new skill had visible, distinct function. Hidden items were hidden not because fake- dice- failed perception- stat- check but by clever placement in levels, sometimes requiering thief-like agilty (needed to jump from one building balcony to another) or solving enviromental puzzles. Not to mention easy, smooth interface with bindable spells and items (in similliar maner like in first DeusEx). Was ambitious like Cyberpunk 2077 and same technical messy.

    Midtown Madness was a great release. It's not as remarkable now, but it was a revelation in 1999. The open city experience had been done to some extent at least as far back as Vette, but this was the first really complete city experience. It's also a very important piece of tech.
    Angel Studios would become Rockstar San Diego, moving from Midtown Madness to Midnight Club. The would create the Red Dead games, and they are the team behind the current Rockstar Advanced Game Engine.
    Baldur's Gate: Fallout restarted the traditional RPG genre, Baldur's Gate saved it.
    It's hard to imagine now, but Baldur's Gate was in many ways a throwback when released. The 2D version of the genre's rebirth would only last so long as it morphed into 3D games like Knights of the Old Republic. It would return as a throwback again a decade or so later. In the modern market when have games like Baldur's Gate 3, which are 3D but play like a 2D game.
    Turok 2: Something I didn't play. I played a little Turok on the N64 and I had a strong (and generally fair) bias against up-ports of N64 games and N64 shooters. Even the best N64 shooters were wonky when you were already mouse-looking on the PC. N64 reviews of this were much better than the PC version, although Iguana probably had stuff for the PC since the game was being designed for the unreleased 64DD.
    Lands of Lore is an oddball series. The first game (Throne of Chaos) is in the Bards Tale/Might and Magic style and is certainly the best.
    The second game (Guardians of Destiny) was a Post-RPG game with standard fantasy feel, but simplified RPG elements that were standard at the time as games were focused on what they could get off of 3D, both real time and pre-rendered, and off of other video. These Post-RPG games are more action than RPG. I never had much interest in this because of the depth.
    This third game tries to get all of both worlds, and for that reason it's a bit of a hodgepodge. In fact, this game feels like yet another experiment in the 3D open RPG genre that can't quite get there from a combination of technical and design limitations. It's an open game, but it's open-tunnel instead of open-world. It doesn't given you a sense of place. It's the same design problem faced by Ultima XI (and Ultima VIII, honestly).
    KO: 5D Boxing. I'm not sure I've seen this one, but boy does it look like a late update of 4D Boxing.
    Jagged Alliance 2: JA, refined into its purest form. JA was good, but this game is the dragon that indie developer have been chasing for 25 years.
    Prince of Persia 3D: it's far too literal of an interpretation of the cinematic platformer. The mechanics of PoP are rough when used in 3D like this. If only they could go back in time and make a better 3D Prince of Persia.
    H&D: Smaller game (relative to the time) that had a fanbase, but I never got around to playing it.
    Homeworld: At a point where RTS games felt stale, Homeworld brought something new and exciting.
    Tyrian 2000: I just don't have much exciting to say about shooters. But you can get this for free on GOG.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  3 місяці тому

      Yep, I played MM to death! :)
      Interesting take on Fallout/Baldur's Gate. I do not disagree. I had to say though, that given my love for turn-based games, BG3 is now my fave in the series.
      If I'm to be honest, I feel that we really didn't need that many Ultimas, and could've really ended the series on VIII. Though, if I remember correctly, you're not a fan of it?
      I spent two hours trying to get KO to run on my modern PC, through various tips, compatibility methods, everything and just couldn't. All because of the quality of videos on YT. Or "a video" on YT. I can get fine into the menus, but as soon as the fight's about to start it CTDs.
      Tyrian's one of the best PC shmups! Though, that's changing nothing for someone who's not big on the genre. ;)

    • @kyleolson8977
      @kyleolson8977 3 місяці тому

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames One reason I think that Baldur's Gate was a throwback when released was that it did not use 3D graphics (at least to any significant extent). In general, the gameplay mostly feels like older RPGs of the pre-multimedia age with an excellent, deep presentation.
      I don't hate Ultima VIII. But I pity the fool.
      Ultima VIII was pretty messed up on release. The jumping was a nightmare. If I only ever played packed U8 I might have better thoughts.
      The linear nature of the game hurt because the game gave expectations of being non-linear. The game feels like the open environment of Ultima VII at first, then you see it is a series of coridors.
      I'm also not a fan of the character arcs. I feel like the virtues of the Avatar were lost. In 4-7, there's a different moral at the center. In 8-9, the Avatar acts recklessly.
      I think the tech was very well used in Crusader: No Remorse/Regret.
      I don't think you're the only one having trouble getting KO working.
      I'm more positive on shmups than I was in the past, but old PC shmups in particular I didn't play much of and I can't get a read on.
      On the PC the shmup wasn't a big genre at this time, especially here in the US. The shareware market had faded where they were most common had faded, and the modern downloadable market had yet to arrive. Big publishers weren't selling them and ones from smaller developer weren't distributed in the US.
      It's less that I'm knocking any particular shmup, it's just that I can't find a good enough frame of reference. Even games I didn't play in most genres I can feel where they fit in. Not as much here.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames

      @@kyleolson8977 Perhaps Ultima might've ended on a high note with the 7th instalment. Both of them. Though Ultima Online was pretty decent too. So I've heard at least. As I've never had a chance to play it.
      I think shoot'em ups in US were a much bigger thing on the consoles than on PC. PC felt like a platform centred around more serious, bigger (and better) games. :)

There are some games that marked history that I haven't played, although there are some that I don't know if I would play considering the modern games that exist today. There are other games that are a real find for me (I have discovered many racing games). But it is always a pleasure to install and test them. I've recently also started recording my own footage for DOS stuff. Well, not for the video that's coming tomorrow, as I didn't have enough time to record it all for this particular genre that would require at least couple of hours for each game to grab interesting footage, but for the other I do, and the plan is to eventually move to my own footage for all of DOS/Amiga stuff. And when that's done, I'll move to Windows/C64 and maybe some classic 16bit consoles too. But since I've also a day job, it's a process and the transition will take a while. Sorry.

    I love Midtown Madness, it’s on my retro gaming pile I keep to hand. The Chicago city map was a bit of a novelty at the time & if you know Chicago you know your way around the game’s open world. It’s also a great game for testing retro hardware because the graphics are so scalable, from software rendering to full on hardware effects requiring the best graphics cards of the day & everything in-between. It’s also a great way to present the difference between software & hardware rendering for people who don’t understand as the game’s happy to run in whatever mode you choose.
    Turok 2 just didn’t grab me like the first one, I don’t know why? It’s a good game but it’s not the great game the first one felt like, at least on the N64.
    Whilst I know their’s more depth to it Lands of Lore II looks like a janky Doom .wad. Some places look a lot better than others but some places look positively bad.
    Usually you credit the creators you borrow footage from but I feel like you’re blaming them for the KO footage? 😄
    Prince of Persia 3D is terrible! Both my ex & me are huge PoP fans but we both loth PoP 3D because the controls ssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccckk! We may have rage quit too early?
    Hidden & Dangerous is excellent, even though I’m not a huge fan of squad shooters, so I’d argue that if I don’t like the genre but I do like the game that’s probably the highest praise I can give it?
    Tyrion 2000 has been ported to everything capable of running it & that’s a good thing because it’s a great game. If you love up scrolling shooters it’s a no brainer & if you don’t, try it anyway because you may find it addictive?
    Fun video, thanks.
    1999 was a fantastic year for gaming & whilst your first video barely scratches the surface I fully understand your dilemma in picking the games for this series. The hardware to justify those games made big strides forward in ‘99 too.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  3 місяці тому

      You know I never thought of it, but you're entirely correct with MM being excellent for displaying the difference between software and hardware rendering. That's an amazing observation! So useful!
      I like both Turoks because they're not bad. But arguably, basically any other PC-based FPS games, and not ports from consoles, were better.
      Ha ha ha :) The KO comment is just out there... When I realized that there was just this one video out there. I took 2 hours to try to record it myself, but it just didn't take. I can get into menus but whenever I tried starting the gameplay, it just CTD every single time without fail. xD
      The later POP3D games are better.
      Also, yeah, it may be correct, that 1999 was partly so great, cause we had amazing hardware and many more genres could be made to be more immersive, bigger, better and entertaining.

    Bro, I think you have a secret crush on the bosses wife. You mention her a lot LMAO. I believe I was playing Unreal Tournament in 99, World Superbikes Championship 2000 in 2000 and Black & White in 2001. Microsoft incase you are reading this, I would like a remake of Black & White plz.

      I think Black & White is EA's IP now. :)

      @@OldAndNewVideoGamesThat's the million dollar question. My belief is Lionhead was bought by Microsoft, since they developed the game & EA only published it, technically it's a Microsoft IP.

      @@mishkatown8625 Interesting. I'm not versed enough in history of Lionhead to dispute that, so I'm taking it in as a fact. :)

    I could never understand why people liked Baldur's Gate so much, I've always thought it was incredibly boring. Icewind Dale is a far superior game.
    Hidden and Dangerous was super fun in multiplayer, but it was such a buggy crashfest. Homeworld is still one the most creative RTS games ever, and I'm amazed no game has ever tried to replicate the gameplay style. Other than Major Stryker, Tyrian 2000 is the only vertical scroller shooter that I've ever found interesting enough to play through the whole game. I still go back and play Tyrian all the time.

      It's a blasphemy! ;) And also, I preferred ID too. More battles = more fun :)
      Look up Sins of the Stars, it's a modern-ish take on Homeworld.

    I still have my Xmas edition of Computer Gaming World magazine. It says on the cover, "50 games reviewed inside!!!". Today, we barely manage 20 AAA Games! The Lands of Lore trilogy is excellent, but the first game is so under the radar - and yet it was excellent!

      Yeah, arguably the first LoL game was the best of them all.
