And here I was thinking Barron was the best thing to happen in a long time. Then his inaction happened. He even contradicts himself while also quoting himself. He says we shouldn't calumny yet he chooses not to hack evil to pieces. Those two actions are described in two separate videos in his youtube channel. The first is about the Devil and the second is about the meaning of Violence in the Bible and HIS interpretation is that when we face evil we always TOY with it and never truly obliterate it. John Paul II call evil for what it was. I believe that is a Polish cultural feature, at least according to a Polish/American Jesuit Priest from Chicago who talks about John Paul II the Polish pope.

Bishop Barron has been incredibly influential in bringing me, my wife, my mother, and my father into Catholicism. He is a very gifted evangelist, and it's disappointing to me that so many over-zealous Catholics think that evangelizing has to be beating someone across the head with a hammer. Calm your zeal and let the Spirit work in people. YOU don't convert anyone; the Spirit converts.
"You're going to hell unless you repent and join the Catholic church", is exactly the kind of thing that would have led me to shut the door in their face and look elsewhere.

“Daring to hope” is not the same thing as “daring to proclaim definitively” that all might be saved. Every single person is not without hope, and we should approach our evangelism with the confidence and optimism that every person is a potential recipient of the transforming grace of God

There should be no shock over hope for universal salvation. This hope goes all the way back to the church fathers. St. Gregory of Nyssa comes to mind. A sophisticated understanding of hell tells you that everyone who is in hell actually wants to be there due to willful isolation from God. It is a logical result of free will. The hope and desire that all creation may come around to willful unity with God is a very Christian and loving sentiment.

    • @HolyKhaaaaan
      @HolyKhaaaaan 3 роки тому +10

And as free will is the sole cause of damnation, one is unsure as to how much effort God could or would use to turn the will towards Himself, or what He would consider coercive.
Not to mention most people's wills - even the good people! - are motivated at least in part by bad reasoning. We're pretty stupid as a species. I someday would like to write a thesis about the evident stupidity of the human race and present it to God as evidence in defence of the salvation of at least most people.

We are commanded to use our words to lift each other up. I could be wrong (and often am), but this comment in essence appears to me as a reminder to take appreciation of the Bishop's teachings despite issues or controversies - taking a one-sided view and never seeing the middle ground always leads to division, and we certainly don't need more of that. That said, criticism should never be suppressed and nor should the ability respond and correct oneself where needed. But I really like your point. Not enough people are saying it nowadays, even in the liturgy where Mass has on occasions become focused on ourselves rather than the True, Sacred, Divine sacrifice and worship to God alone. Bishop Barron never said Hell is empty, he only said he hopes it is empty. My question is, why do all of you so adamantly hope that it is not?
Don’t worry, I believe in Hell, I know how easy it is to be damned because I know how monstrous I am, what a terrible sinner I am. Maybe you should also keep in mind how terribly imperfect you are, how your heart is made of stone, while you accuse Bishop Barron of heresy while hundreds if not thousands have converted, some having left a life of atheism and come to the Catholic Church, because of his work. What do you think is worse, Bishop Barron hoping all will be saved (while stating very clearly that it’s entirely possible many are not), or people doing absolutely nothing other than polarizing and dividing Our Suffering Mother, the Church and Bride of Jesus Christ?
Clearly heresy is a problem, but you need to pick your battles, and as good Catholics you should always err on the side of innocence, assuming that the person has the right intentions and that what they are saying can be properly interpreted in line with doctrine. Looking for heresy like a needle in a haystack is not the same as fighting against it.
Don’t you know that when parents fight, the kids rebel against both rather than pick sides? You should never create scandal unless you seriously believe (and have the authority to discern such matters and take action) that the damages caused by scandal and division will be smaller than the damages caused by silence or subtle forms of action.
You have all been undermining the authority of the Church by bickering amongst each other in public and making a debate club out of Our Mother.
This is the sin of scandal, do not think it is not. There are plenty of ways to address these issues properly without creating scandal. Shame on us all for loving self-righteousness and finger-wagging rather than collaboration and true discernment. It would not have been that difficult for all of you to discern that creating scandal is the stupidest thing to do at a time like this in the Church. We already appear frail and divided, and that is precisely what is causing the decline in numbers of Catholics. It is not because the Church is too liberal, it is not because the Church is too conservative, it is because no two representatives of the Church seem capable of agreeing on anything, and we are utterly failing at presenting a uniform and united front. It is too divided; why would anyone trust such a divided institution that can’t seem to agree with itself on anything? What a silly generation, democratizing religion and thinking, thanks to social media platforms, that each one of us has an opinion that matters.

Boscos_box thank you for your comments. I think we agree on more things than you realize. First of all, I am aware of the dismal state of the Catholic Church in the West, in terms of hippie-like heresy becoming more and more normative. I’m not saying these issues shouldn’t be dealt with, I’m just saying that UA-cam scandals and debates are really not the best way to deal with these issues. For example, after my own conversion I was faced with the terrible confusion of figuring out who to trust. Videos like this don’t help, people pointing fingers at each other don’t help. (Regarding finger wagging, if you look back at my comment you will see that I wrote “shame on us all for finger wagging” since I was aware I am doing the same lol).

    • @crystellesaleh4800
      @crystellesaleh4800 5 років тому +5

Boscos_box moreover, my point precisely was that this plethora of “opinions” is a problem. People who think they are more Catholic than the Magisterium, for example, are as problematic as people who think they are more Catholic than St. Paul.
I also think it’s terrible that people set themselves apart from the Church as liberal or conservative or traditional. There shouldn’t be groups but unfortunately there are, and this grouping and dividing is definitely being exacerbated by social media. I simply believe that right now, the Church needs to be responding to these challenges with the intention of, let’s say... regrouping and figuring out how to become reunited and One under Our Head and Lord Jesus Christ, how to deal with this deterioration of hierarchy when it comes to ideas, teaching, and theology.... UA-cam videos of people calling each other heretics will do more harm than good. Especially when attacking someone like Bishop Barron, whose credibility is a crucial factor in one of the most effective, widespread, and publicized attempts at evangelization taking place today. Why would anyone choose to undermine the authority and credibility of someone who is of such high value to the Church? This is democratization right here, this is what is so terrible about people taking matters into our own hands: we fail to take into account the big picture and calculate appropriate steps considering the ripple effects of things. What is better and what is worse, the consequences of Bishop Barron’s video on Hell, or the consequences of the push-back against him? It is not for us to decide and answer that question.
Edit: I say all this acknowledging that I myself do the things I am condemning. And I acknowledge that Matt Fradd and Father Mike May be trying to reduce scandal rather than increase it. I think I’m more upset at the people who are championing these crusades without necessarily having the authority to do so within Church Hierarchy.

@@ATLKing404 The idea that only baptized Catholics can go to heaven is not a teaching of the Catholic Church. Can non-Christians go to heaven? This is a complicated topic. To reject Christ is a grave sin. But, as with all sin, there are many things that can affect a person's culpability. For example, an aborted baby never had an opportunity to accept Christ. Does this mean that Christ will send all aborted babies to hell? Obviously not.
You cannot reject something you have no knowledge of. For example, I personally hate broccoli. Some people like broccoli. But a person who has never heard of broccoli, or tasted broccoli, can not make a judgment either way. They are simply ignorant. Or suppose that my parents taught me that broccoli was dangerous. It could kill me if I eat it. This would make my acceptance of broccoli much more difficult. Similarly, a young child in Siberia who has never heard of Christ is in no position to either reject him or accept Him.

When I met my wife I decided to investigate the church because she was Catholic. And after watching Bishop Barron's videos about this, his wisdom and mercy gave me a new look at the Catholic church and I was confirmed & first communion within 8 months. If "Dare we Hope" can convince a stubborn anti Catholic like me of mercy and bring me back into the fold, maybe God willing we can hope that all will have the same fate. We can hold onto the belief in the possibility and guarantee that if we die in a state of broken relationship with God we will meet our just punishment. Bishop Barron has had a couple public mishaps that I can recall that are due a public clarification. For starters the Balthazar comment as mentioned in the video, as well as the Ben Shapiro interview where he said Jesus is the privileged way, not the only way. As Matt Fradd and Fr. Mike have both said, yes he has done great work in evangelization as well as bringing forth a richness that stems from the tradition of the Church. Bishop Barron has stated over and over, and has clamped down on the view that there is a hope that all men can be saved. This is in direct opposition to the words of Christ, St Paul and the teaching of the Church. So in other words what the bishop is holding to strongly, despite the continual Church teaching, is heresy. He may be a very nice guy but when you stubbornly hold a heretical position on Church teaching - you can legitimately be called a heretic. If someone is a heretic, than it is legitimate for someone to call out your heretical view. In addition if you hold an heretical view on something so essential to the Faith ( a chink I the armor so to speak) then you may hold other errors as well. And you can be a danger others faith who may believe you more because of your charisma over the actual teaching of the Church.

When he told Ben Shapiro who I do admire and pray for, that Catholicism was the privileged way to Salvation , I Knew the Bishop was a Modernist and in my opinion did a grave disservice to Ben Shapiro. Ok, so, yes, this is exactly what I've been trying to say! And he beats around the bush , instead of being straight forward to the homosexual people as well. They need to know that if they do not leave this lifestyle of sin, the ones that are sexually active, they risk losing their soul. They need to be properly instructed and Bishop Barron didn't do that. He doesn't want to offend. He gets grief from us because he is in the position of being in the publics eye and can spread the Good News of the Gospel on national television and online and people will respect him and look up to him, but then, the entire lgbt community will despise him for his stance on this, not to mention he is buddies with James Martin. Well if he is a Catholic priest, his stance needs to be that of the Catholic Church. He doesn't want to "offend " anyone, but he offends God instead. This makes no sense. And when talking to Ben , or that homosexual man that interviewed him, he just doesn't tell it like it is. Sin is sin and when in sin, heaven is not an option. I mean, that is what the Church has taught for over 2000 years. And when folks like myself stand up against error, we are called extreme right wing trads, or something. ..... the sins of modernism, secularism, and relativism have seeped into the Church and, well, I guess there are those who just don't see it. • @SowerOfMustardSeed
      @SowerOfMustardSeed 2 роки тому +1

@TruthSeeker75 we dare hope hell is empty is a spirituality, rather than a doctrine. Jesus clearly said that many will not pass through the narrow gate. So it is a fact that many died and will die in a state of dispositioning themselves fundamentally misaligned with God, in other words “in hell”.
So what’s the purpose of this spirituality that we dare hope hell is empty? The significance is that this is to believe in the power, mercy and love of God that His plan is for everyone to be saved and no one is beyond salvation, even the monsters you mentioned, as long as they repent and accept our Lord before they die. This is the gospels. This is the good news we Catholics should bring to the world!
What is the chance that Judas Iscariot, Nero, Hitler, etc. have repented and accepted our Lord before drawing their last breath? Very unlikely. It is because they dispositioned themselves in many ways contrary to God’s way all their lives. This “bad habit” - a habit of sin is never easy to overcome to say the least. So my opinion is that even if or when Jesus appeared to them just before they died, they would likely have grown more angry and repugnant to have found out that they had been wrong all their life. They would probably have been very mad with Jesus why have God made them that way. They would probably have blamed God that it’s not their fault that God didn’t make it clear to them. Et Cetera. Then they couldn’t help but to have freely rejected Jesus.
Having said all this. The truth is I don’t know. No one knows except for God. And therefore I can still dare hope that hell is empty. It’s not a doctrinal or matter of fact statement, but a spirituality that strengthens our total reliance on God and our best effort to cooperate with God.
      I hope you understand now.

Bishop Barron strikes me as a highly intellectual person that is quite open to information and learning not just about the faith but about the world as a whole. He is effective because he doesn't build up walls. He isn't scared to pull in references from today's world to give examples or further explain the catholic position. There's two things. His abstractions are sometimes very theological, profound and require a mind attuned to that type of intellectualism. If you're not into very deep analysis and correlations, you may end up misinterpreting what he says. ALSO, as a species, we have a tendency to prefer the comfort of what is familiar and we surround ourselves with people who share our opinions and views. We end up living in a bubble (ie. confirmation bias). Any window to the outside, any introduction or study of an outside topic, any line of "modern" questioning is seen as the enemy. That type of behavior is contrary to the call to evangelize. In order to invite people in, you have to speak about things they are familiar with. Of course, always inkeeping with Church teaching. For one, I think Bishop Barron does a stellar job at that. His language is precise and he often uses words for their root meaning rather than the implied subtext society has tacked onto them overtime. His writing style is akin to scholarly journals. Also, everything Word on Fire puts out has great production quality. Something more catholic outlets should learn to do (*shutters at the cheesyness of some of our media) Overall, I have learned quite a lot from him and am grateful for his work. Pax domini!

Do we need bishops in this time of need to be clear and concise as to the true teachings of the Church or do we prefer bishops that offend no one? It seems that saints like St Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross were clear in their writings and certainly St Catherine of Siena didn't speak PC to the pope nor was St. Thomas More "wishy washy" with Henry VIII, imagine St Thomas Aquinas writing his Summa in ambiguous terms, and thie list goes on but NO, Bishop Barron needs his acolytes!

European bishops ignored this prohibition to the point where Pope Paul VI allowed ot so as not to have the majority of Communicants doing a disobedient act. Communion rails were torn out of Churches . Beautiful artwork was replaced by minimalist abstract or ugly art.
Once the priest faced the people (verses populum) , he suddenly became a comedian not another Christ (alter Christus) where Christ offers Himself to the Father through the ministry of the priest in expiation for the sins of the world.( This offering is more visibly clear when the priest faces the altar.(ad orientum). Instead, the priest would crack jokes in middle of Mass.(The embezzling and sodomizing pastor used to do just that.)
Then the inclusive language began out of disobedience and eventually found it's way into the liturgy. Some priests continue to be disobedient and change the words of Eucharistic prayer IV from "a Man like us in all things but sin" to " a person like us in all things but sin". This promotes the heresy of Nestorianism which the Coucil of Ephesus condemned in A.D. 431. To correct Father Feminist : Jesus is a Divine Person. NOT a human person.
I could go on and on but I hope you don't just blow off people's ligitamate concerns as Rad trad.

I converted to Catholicism at 18 and 50 years later still learning. ❤️ As long as we continue saying Yes to God it’s all part of His plan. Bishop Barron, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Didn't Bishop Barron say that there is a reasonable hope that all will be saved? Is this not very close to Origen's error? Didn't Jesus say, at Matthew 7:13-14, that only a few would be saved?
Bishop Barron may be a smooth and polished speaker but Arius, Montanus, Pelagius, Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli may have been smooth and polished speakers too. I have heard that Arius in particular seemed to all who met him a very ascetic and saintly man.
Bishop Barron is also a big supporter of ecumenism. No surprise there. Since we're all going to be saved anyway you might as well choose the easiest religion out there.

The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved
by St. Leonard of Port Maurice
Saint Leonard of Port Maurice was a most holy Franciscan friar who lived at the monastery of Saint Bonaventure in Rome. He was one of the greatest missioners in the history of the Church. He used to preach to thousands in the open square of every city and town where the churches could not hold his listeners. So brilliant and holy was his eloquence that once when he gave a two weeks' mission in Rome, the Pope and College of Cardinals came to hear him. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were his crusades. He was in no small way responsible for the definition of the Immaculate Conception made a little more than a hundred years after his death. He also gave us the Divine Praises, which are said at the end of Benediction. But Saint Leonard's most famous work was his devotion to the Stations of the Cross. He died a most holy death in his seventy-fifth year, after twenty-four years of uninterrupted preaching.
One of Saint Leonard of Port Maurice's most famous sermons was "The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved." It was the one he relied on for the conversion of great sinners. This sermon, like his other writings, was submitted to canonical examination during the process of canonization. In it he reviews the various states of life of Christians and concludes with the little number of those who are saved, in relation to the totality of men.
The reader who meditates on this remarkable text will grasp the soundness of its argumentation, which has earned it the approbation of the Church. Here is the great missionary's vibrant and moving sermon.

      peace be with you
Bishop Barron was a respected teacher amongst Catholic.
This is what makes His Excellency comment so terrible.
It is far more dangerous to Catholics to have a respected bishop teach false than a protestant teacher we know teaches false.
His does not merely say " Dare we hope" but that "we may reasonably hope that all people will be brought to heaven"
There is no evidence for this hope.
We may hope for this and pray for it because God wants all me to be saved (2 Tim 2L1-4) but it is no a reasonable one given Jesus's teaching.
People have heard the truth from him and will assume this is true.
This teaching is as bad if not worse than "faith alone" because it does not even have the requirement of believing in God.
Both have a fruit of apathy to love and obedience.
And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered:
And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation. (Heb 5:8-9)
Bishop Barron has become the banner around which universalist gather to tell us there is no hell.
And do not dismiss the carrot and the stick so lightly, Jesus seem to use this in Matt 25:31-46
When I left a comment on His Excellency Bishop Barrons page about the dangers of this teaching he flippantly dismisses me saying He will stop teaching it when the Church stops asking him to pray for it.
When I asked him is the Church telling him there is a reasonable hope of it he stopped answering.
It is though they what Christ teaching we must find our hope, not in invented ones.
Bishop Barron needs to correct this teaching.
      Please pray for me
      God bless you

I pray for you Fr Mike, people like bishop Barron are placing themselves above Jesus and the saints. Please never water down the Gospel because a Matt Fradd wants a certain answer.
Even if hell is a reason for people to stop sinning, it’s a good thing rather than Barron trying to cause laxity. Our Lady showed the Fatima children hell, so it’s definitely real. Barron goes against the Bible and our Lady’s messages, he is teaching heresy. Three times in his video Barron said he believes many are going to Heaven.
Please explain to yourself how a regular joe who never breaks a law and doesn’t do much in life is going to heaven when saints like mother Theresa and her kind spent their entire lives living for the Gospel? Doesn’t Jesus say, the way is narrow that leads to life and you should strive hard for it. Barron probably takes in every stranger that wants to enter his house, but he is not a holy God. The Bible says no filthy thing shall enter the house of God, a mediocre, average tepid person should know what God says. He will spit you out for not being hot or cold. God has told us that many will say, that they preached in his name and did great things. Notice, “many” and he will reply get away from me you evil doers!!!!! Now when you are convinced that Barron is correct, ask him to explain away Jesus.

Having read Balthasar's book, I feel compelled to mention that it BEGINS by saying we will all be judged. That is not a "get out of jail free" card by any means. We will be judged. For all their professed piety, Taylor Marshall & Timothy Gordon (neither of whom hold degrees in Catholic theology) will be judged - and who is to say what sins they will need to answer for to Jesus? Balthasar never lets you forget that Hell is a reality. However, his careful examination of Biblical and patristic sources makes it clear that it is God's will is that all will be saved. That is a powerful force to reckon with, and hard for any person to thwart, but it is possible. God will not force Salvation on us. We can still land ourselves in Hell. The key to Balthasar's analysis of the words spoken by Jesus in the Gospels is to distinguish between the pre-resurrection and post-resurrection message he delivers. If you proof-text without attending to the, context, and treat it all as the same, you are tacitly implying that Christ's sacrifice on the Cross had no merit - that the world did not fundamentally changed on Easter morning.

Balthasar was not agreeing with Origin but an objective reasonable hope that Christ Jesus descended all the way down to the Godforsaken ones in hell. Of course there are souls in hell and souls reject God's efficient grace of salvation because of free will and do not sufficiently grow in virtue to accept Gods mercy. So if God hopes that all men are saved, then why can't we? Do you get the objective stance?

They were not God forsaken. But could not be saved without Christs sacrifice. Do you not understand the multiple levels of hell ? I speak objectively of course ;) .

I find Fr.Schmitz's comments very disturbing here. Does he believe that Indians and other non-catholics are default going to hell? Or the majority? If so, that contradicts tradition from St.Justin Martyr to Lumen Gentium. Would love clarification here

"In order to change the world we must see the world as it truly is. Not as we wish it was ."
Pope Leo XIII Author of the Saint Michael Prayer
Bad theology leads to BAD actions.
Case in point, my former pastor had all the appearance of orthodoxy (Eucharistic adoration,May procession, Corpus Christi procession, 40 hours devotions, etc. He was arrested a year ago for embezzling $800000 from the All souls Remembrance envelopes over a number of years. He set up a private bank account and part of that money was used to but homosexual sex.
It seems unlikely that he would not have done so if he feared the fires of Hell. In all likelihood he was taught in seminary "reasonable hope that all may be saved " theology. I know that it is private revelation but the children of Fatima were given a vision of Hell in which they saw HUMAN souls. Our Lady said to them, "You see Hell where the souls of poor sinners GO..."

But she still asked us to pray that God lead *all* souls to heaven, especially those in most need of His Mercy. You can't pray that in vain.
That's what I heard from the bishop. He spent the whole first half of the video talking about how Origen was wrong for saying that all souls will be saved.

@@EC-rd9ys Of course we ask for the Lord's mercy for all souls. However , once a soul has chosen Hell there is no do over. That error in thinking was condemned by the Church years ago. I can't remember which council. That is a choice that humans get to make and it lasts FOREVER. This is why the phrase "reasonable hope that all men may be saved" is erroneous. It encourages spiritual acedia.("Why try to live a Holy and charitable life when in all likelihood I will go to Heaven anyway? ").

Bishop Baron loves to speak in ambiguities. He needs to clarify in light of orthodoxy, period. Fr. Mike sees nothing wrong with calling out Baron but Matt Fradd does. Just lost a bit of respect for Matt on this one. There’s no room for comfy conservatism in our time. Either commit to tradition or become a modernist. Silence is approval, remember that.

Doesn't the Church teach that we don't *know* that any human soul (including Judas) is in hell? And isn't it consistent with this claim to *hope* that no human being ends up in hell? Why, then, would the von Balthasar/Barron position on this issue be considered a heresy or even a borderline heresy?

Bishop Barron blocked Dr. Taylor Marshall on Twitter, after Dr. Marshall asked to prove a section of Vatican II. I know that probably has nothing to do with this video, but it's just something that made me lose a bit of respect for the Bishop.

@ShariaFreeUK, I agree. I'm not too well versed in the dogma of the Church, but if Vatican II breeds priests, bishops, and even a Pope, that blocks or refuses to engage in conversation with anyone, especially a Catholic, then there's no room for it. Christ went to the sinners to teach them, not to score points or look good.
