If you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you! Have a great day!

Tis the season... I actually cut and put up my first cutting of hay the first week of the month. A little early, considering my neighbors just cut it last night, but the grass was ready and I had a window with weather. I get the impression the neighbor was left waiting for reason rain to blow through. Anyway, it was not without incident with my ancient equipment we use to put up loose hay. I have a JD #5 that I rebuilt and the rear tire blew on me, luckily, as I was finishing up. I also discovered after I was done and the mower was missing a swath of grass that I had lost a rock guard. Ordered the replacement tire and it should be here Monday, and spent some time today replacing the rock guard, tightening things up, adjusting the rock guards (2 lb hammer) and tuning. I keep tripping it on some stumps and I raised the bar up and added some rake to it (tilting the front up) to help get the rock guards up and over. It is good that the trip works and I learned how to reset it from the seat, but if I can avoid it, all the better. My loose hay operation is very small scale and low dollar, but it is successfully feeding the goats. I am pretty pleased with it considering I did it all by my lonesome. Hopefully, I have two more cuttings in me.

thank you for the video. We are watching al small farm stuff on sickle mowers as tommorrow I hope to use our new(to us ) tractor and start hay making. Its a 1962 Farmall Super Cub and it cost half the price of a new sickle bar to put on our micro tractor. And it came with ploughs as wel as a fitted sickle bar. And it works, even better. We have cut hay in the past witha scythe and a sicke, but I mheading for my mid 70s so taking the esay route ! Take care and thanks again. Good hay making to all.

Thank You. A Super Cub? Is that one of the French ones? I have a mower for my Cub as well. Thank You for watching

Yes it is, all the signs are in French. Just back in from the first try. Cuts fine but the engine bogs abit and the grass has to be cleared off the bar as I go along. It is long grass and a herby undergrowth. The highest setting seems to be too low, could do with being a bit higher so will have a look at that and a wheel at the end maybe? Made a sort of finger for the end to try clear it but that dosent seem to be problem , the grass just stacks up on the bar. Back out and have a think when I cool down. Heading for 39 C it says , 102 F Thank you for the reply.

@@keithbarker7552 try a double knife section on the end. Also need a grass board and make sure the rock guards are shimmed so the sections barely squeak by.

thanks again. Watched a Few Acres on adjusting the sickle bar and the double knife at the end sounds a good idea, not sure how easy bits are here but will find out. Big gap between finger gaurds and blades so adjusted thgem as advised witha large hammer, not so sure at firs but got more enthusiastic and now they are all much closer. Bar seemed to be pointing up a bit so tried adjust the skid on the out end. Try tomorrow or Monday. All the best.

@@keithbarker7552 you can adjust the drag link bar in or out so that when you’re mowing, the bar stays perpendicular to the tractor. Make sure your knife sections are good and sharp.

I have the very same model, the manual says to use 80W90 to oil the bar.... You just pur it on top while the machine is running and the oil will be distributed by the mowing motion of the blades...
It does not look like a bad machine but when you look at it up close you can see that Italians don't have an eye for detail like the Austrians/Germans do...

We went with a small drum mower instead.. had a old ford501 . The only real complaint about the drum mower is it mows the field like it was done with a lawnmower real short..

Have you had any problems with the guard bar breaking at the head? I tried welding it up multiple times even welding the bar to the head an it still broke. It actualy broke the knife head in half. I have a new part on order but im not very happy with the machine as it is practically new. Only had 70 acres on it when i bought it. I have cut about 3 acres then it broke repeatedly. Could there be something thats not set right.

I have not had any issues and I have mowed a couple really rough fields. there has to be something out of balance, but without looking at it, I am not sure what exactly. not sure if their tech support would be of any help? I am sorry you are having this issue. My biggest problem is the pulley rubbing on the belt shield and I hear that's pretty common.

    • @LedgemereHeritageFarm

Yes. I mow along the road with it at 90-degrees vertical cutting sumacs. It will cut through 1/2” or so brush no problem

I bought this same sickle mower two years ago and have only mowed about 3 acres with it and the three bolts that move the rock guard arm keep breaking. Do you have this issue? I’m really frustrated with it and am considering selling it. Not sure if this operator error on my part or just poor design. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Is something binding up?you should be able to move the belt pulley and rotate it by hand with some resistance

@@LedgemereHeritageFarm I’m not at the ranch today so I can’t check but after watching your video I never installed the chain assembly that limits the lowering of the mower. I wonder if the blade was carrying the weight of the mower causing too much strain on the action arms. Also I never checks my 1mm clearance of the blade glides so they may be rubbing. I’ll keep you posted when I go up to the ranch next weekend. Thanks for responding and putting out great videos.

@@bryanwall7075 thank you for watching. It really sounds to me like it’s binding. Put some wd40 dry lube on it in between the two moving knife parts
