  • Sashi is a Shakuhachi meditative peace intended to help both the player and listener achieve enlightenment (Satori). The Cloister gardens at the Metropolitan Museum in New York provide a backdrop for this short piece which seems spontaneous and uncomposed but actually focuses on each moment of music and breath as it is felt in the present.
If you are interested in learning to play the Shakuhachi, free introductory lessons that include the fingering chart and help the student get started can be found on this channel. “Traditional Shakuhachi Lesson 1” is a good starting point. Good local teachers and capable instruments can be expensive and difficult to find. Reputable quality shakuhachis can be found at “nyohaku” on EBay.
Sashi is played here on a standard five hole 1.8 (D-tuned) shakuhachi.
Mastering these short lessons provide the first stepping stones to becoming a competent traditional player. It is recommended to view these videos on a larger screen with good sound, and print out the notation.
