    For those who follow filmmusic, a little side note. There's a little piece of music used as sort of a love theme between George Montgomery and Gene Tierney. It may have sounded familiar to anyone who saw the 1939 fim, "Tne Rains Came" and was thelove theme for Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy.

      @@akrenwinkle Really? (I’m watching the film as I watch this, appalled by George Montgomery’s acting. Lol). They’re all from Brooklyn?! That’s remarkable (aside from Hathaway, who imo doesn’t belong with the others). Mae West and Lena Horne, two of my very favourites actors and singers. Thanks for responding and letting me know!

    this is a solid and quite likeable film directed by a man who helmed many many films starting in 1933. Produced and written by Ben Hecht who directed and co directed a few Hollywood films, most notably Crime Without Passion with its surreal sequence.

    • @fifthbusiness1678
      @fifthbusiness1678 2 місяці тому +2

      Yes, and I can’t believe Hecht could have written most of the dialogue for George Montgomery. Perhaps in the hands of a talented actor with some charm (Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and many others) they wouldn’t have sounded as corny and aggressive (especially when he speaks to Tierney). Wonder how many turned down his part. Good film, but Montgomery was as usual: good to look at, perhaps, but an awful actor IMO.

    I was disappointed that in the script there was never an attempt to explain how an obviously caucasian woman with blue eyes was "Chinese," as she certainly wasn't ethnic Chinese. Was her mother supposed to be of European descent? They never say. They could have made her an orphan adopted by her Chinese father, but they never say that either. There was a somewhat prominent Chinese-American actress named Anna May Wong who was making films in Hollywood at the time and who was quite attractive, so if the character was supposed to be ethnically Chinese, why didn't they choose her? I found this to be a significant flaw and thought it detracted from what was otherwise an entertaining movie.

      Moviegoers, as well as producers and directors were all looking for the next big movie star, and the studios were the only ones making the big bucks. It all boils down to money. Oh, actually, there was a terrific Chinese cast on the hit movie, Flower Drum Song.

    Thankfully films improved from this genre on with better casting better direction! Number one the hero he was good looking enough but had absolutely no understanding of a hero or romantic mentality.The intonation of his voice was often wrong.Gene Tierney looked like a paper doll cutout from a fashion magazine. really vapid. Not surprising Hollywood used her but finally drove her into madness.

    What could have been quite a good period era film is almost ruined by George Montgomery’ performance in the leading male role. Ben Hecht wrote this screenplay, and although it’s not one of his best efforts it’s still Hecht. But the way Montgomery delivers his lines, in that voice, is at times almost painful to watch and listen to. He’s completely charmless.
