For those who follow filmmusic, a little side note. There's a little piece of music used as sort of a love theme between George Montgomery and Gene Tierney. It may have sounded familiar to anyone who saw the 1939 fim, "Tne Rains Came" and was thelove theme for Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy.
@@akrenwinkle Really? (I’m watching the film as I watch this, appalled by George Montgomery’s acting. Lol). They’re all from Brooklyn?! That’s remarkable (aside from Hathaway, who imo doesn’t belong with the others). Mae West and Lena Horne, two of my very favourites actors and singers. Thanks for responding and letting me know!
this is a solid and quite likeable film directed by a man who helmed many many films starting in 1933. Produced and written by Ben Hecht who directed and co directed a few Hollywood films, most notably Crime Without Passion with its surreal sequence.
Yes, and I can’t believe Hecht could have written most of the dialogue for George Montgomery. Perhaps in the hands of a talented actor with some charm (Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and many others) they wouldn’t have sounded as corny and aggressive (especially when he speaks to Tierney). Wonder how many turned down his part. Good film, but Montgomery was as usual: good to look at, perhaps, but an awful actor IMO.
Indeed, even despite the presence of George Montgomery! (Sorry, he certainly had the looks and could have been a huge star … save for the fact he couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag).
Wow,watch many of her movies and never noticed the overbite.very noticable when mentioned.a Hollywood tragedy.they really messed with her head, saying she he was heavy
He actually quit show business and started making furniture. Many movie stars bought his furniture. I remember he was married to Dina Shore a famous singer. Watch him in the movie “ Ten Gentlemen From West Point “! 😊
I was disappointed that in the script there was never an attempt to explain how an obviously caucasian woman with blue eyes was "Chinese," as she certainly wasn't ethnic Chinese. Was her mother supposed to be of European descent? They never say. They could have made her an orphan adopted by her Chinese father, but they never say that either. There was a somewhat prominent Chinese-American actress named Anna May Wong who was making films in Hollywood at the time and who was quite attractive, so if the character was supposed to be ethnically Chinese, why didn't they choose her? I found this to be a significant flaw and thought it detracted from what was otherwise an entertaining movie.
Moviegoers, as well as producers and directors were all looking for the next big movie star, and the studios were the only ones making the big bucks. It all boils down to money. Oh, actually, there was a terrific Chinese cast on the hit movie, Flower Drum Song.
Thankfully films improved from this genre on with better casting better direction! Number one the hero he was good looking enough but had absolutely no understanding of a hero or romantic mentality. The intonation of his voice was often wrong.Gene Tierney looked like a paper doll cutout from a fashion magazine. really vapid. Not surprising Hollywood used her but finally drove her into madness.
What could have been quite a good period era film is almost ruined by George Montgomery’ performance in the leading male role. Ben Hecht wrote this screenplay, and although it’s not one of his best efforts it’s still Hecht. But the way Montgomery delivers his lines, in that voice, is at times almost painful to watch and listen to. He’s completely charmless.

Gene Tierney was one of the all time great beauties
One of many, many beauties from Brooklyn. Something in the water?
@@akrenwinkleInteresting. Care to name at least 5 others? Sincerely curious.
@@fifthbusiness1678 Mae West, Marion Davies, Anne Hathaway, Mary Tyler Moore, Lena Horne.

Thank you for the great movie.
❤

Gene Tierney...they say she had an overbite...but can not say she did not have a beautiful smile...a doll
China Doll,

She had far more than a beautiful smile, no? IMO she was one of the most beautiful - and talented- actresses of her era.
@fifthbusiness1678 yes beauty and talent...and charming too tall slender slinky...also
I was named after that beautiful woman…. 😀

George Montgomery...at first I did not like him because he was not John Wayne or Burt Lancaster...but he grows on you alright...

The hats the women wore were wild❤
Merle oberon would fit the part better. But gene was beautiful.
Toss up, really. Both were great beauties and among the most talented actors of their era.

George Montgomery at his best...dead broke...but fast and loose with the women anyway
The fellow had the looks but couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag. And his voice …. 🙄
@fifthbusiness1678 yep the one liners define him...but he is still good as big George Montgomery in the movie doin good inspite of himself
Roger that. Welcome.
So what if George can’t act much, he’s no worse than half the actors in Hollywood. And what a doll... Very enjoyable movie.
Glad you like it. Welcome.
Anyone else recognize the Bradbury Building?
I do. Welcome.
Ummm, the Flying Tigers didn't enter combat until late December 1941, so raid at ~4:30 could not have been by them.

Good plot

Same here. It makes no sense, thematically. Weird Hollywood. She's not credible in a Chinese role.
Moviegoers, as well as producers and directors were all looking for the next big movie star, and the studios were the only ones making the big bucks. It all boils down to money. Oh, actually, there was a terrific Chinese cast on the hit movie, Flower Drum Song.

I wouldn't call Anna "somewhat prominent." Anyway, Anna was 15 years older than Gene.

Johnny can't act, but even if he could, the cheesy/macho lines they gave him would sound bad. TY anyway.
