the sad thing about pompeii is that it was discovered that they had early warning and an earthquake much earlier indicating the volcano was active. however the people of pompeii had a very good lot in life and were doing very well for themselves. Ironically this due to the very rich fertile agricultural land around due to the volcano ash of past ages. they didnt heed the warnings cause they're lives there were too good, right until the volcano unleashed a blast so potent, it flash heated everything to death within quite a few miles and then covered everything in poisonous gases and ashes further than that.
Not true at all. While we know today that these signs were early warning signals, the best scientist of the time (who happened to be bathing at the time and saw the eruption) didn't realize what he was seeing. They did NOT know there was a link between earthquakes and eruptions -- and earthquakes were frequent in that area. You might as well say the dead in the great California earthquake/fire of 1906 were lazy too, because, dude, EARTHQUAKES happen in California. Doesn't everyone know that? Duh! The magnitude of the eruption was due to the fact that the volcano had been inactive for some time. Vesuvius has been active since then but before? Probably not. Finally, let's look at the social structure of that time. If Pompeii followed the social norms of the time, half the population were probably slaves (Rome had a 1:1 ratio.) That's not taking into consideration women either (who couldn't go out of their family compounds unless they had the permission of the men in their lives.) In short, at least (very conservatively) half the population couldn't have left via the 'early warning signs' if they wanted to and by the time it blew, they had no chance.
tenjenk Damn you have a LOT of faith in the natural science from 2000 years ago. Sarcasm aside.. They would have been thinking that some deity is causing the issues, not the earthquakes. You're are definitely romanticisng the society, as is your right to, but there's no evidence to support the idea that they were super geniuses that enjoyed life so much they refuse to move a city over.
Gary Sanders IKR? This was the culture who thought that women were "failed" men and that menstrual blood was "failed" semen, and that people got sick because of bad "humors". The slaves probably would've die even if they'd run. Rome had that whole practice of killing a household of slaves if the master died even remotely suspiciously.
bastille are very good at making their audience feel emotional. dan seems to put all his imagination and heart into the making of his songs and thats what makes them so much better than other artists
I heard this song for the first time a few days ago on the radio and I just HAD to find it!! This singer is brilliant!! Can't get enough of this song!!!
I'm so glad these guys are getting the publicity and recognition they deserve, I remember seeing them early last year in a tiny field to 30 people, met them afterwards, so down to earth and friendly, turns out Dan used to live right by me! who would have known ;) Its so nice to see them really develop as a band and make themselves well known
I love this. Dan's voice is so soft and warm....fits perfectly with the choir and the instruments. Makes me want to be able to make music as good as this. Perfect.
I hate when people say "don't become popular". When ever I find a band I love I wish the whole world listened to them to! And becoming popular doesn't ruin bands, Mumford and Sons is a perfect example. They got big on their own unique style and it hasn't changed them.
It's a city in Italy. It's partly destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 ft of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Pompeii was lost for about 1500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery almost 150 years later according to Wikipedia :)
I don't follow trends and I'm not a hipster but this song is amazing. I don't listen to the radio because it's usually crap, when I found out about this I fell in love. When everyone is over it in a week I will love it forever. :)
I think the hope that they won't come super famous is incredibly selfish- I wish them all the best successes because they deserve it. They deserve recognition for their wonderful talent.
a volcano (mount vesuvius) erupted in Pompeii ages ago, and it completely destroyed the area surrounding it, and this song is talking about what happened and how bad it was and trying to find hope during/after an awful situation.
I find this Version much better than the one they play in the radio. I do not understand why so many awesome bands are sold so overpolished and edited (Of course I do not mean Autotune in this case, but editing on the Instruments).
"And the walls kept tumbling down In the city that we love Great clouds roll over the hills Bringing darkness from above" its talking about the old city of pompei which was buried by a volcano´s ashes, all was left the way it was at the moment of the explosion (even people was buried and "statufied" in their place) "But if you close your eyes, Does it almost feel like Nothing changed at all"
More than just poetic, if you think about it. The human race has had so many terrible calamities, and yet there are these certain ones like the fall of Atlantis or Pompeii's destruction that stay in our collective memory. Even 2000 years later we can't forget that one city was eaten by the ground on which it stood in less than a day. Maybe it's because the ash just froze the city in time, maybe it's because men could never understand how even the Roman Empire could do nothing against a force of nature.
Lucas Oskorep Well supposedly there must have been something, of course no city surviving under water, rather a greek island swallowed by the sea, as the original tale goes. That story has to have some inspiration.
The song is about the lost city of Pompeii Italy. Along time ago, The city was off from the base of Mount Vesuvius, a volcano. It Erupted, causing ash to fall over the city 'Great clouds rolled over the city bringing darkness from above" . Now you know and i'm twelve.I went to the Pompeii exhibit at the museum
Why are people complaining? Personally, I prefer the acoustic version :) but I still love all their non-acoustic stuff too... It doesn't matter what they're singing, they're brilliant in every version!
Arrrggghhh Everyones calling me a "Hipster" I didn't even know what one was until I searched it. I just love Bastille and I'm proud to have a found such an awesome band before they become world famous. I aint just someone that "Follows the latest trends"
One day, when Bastille are massive I can say, " I didn't have a frikkin' clue who they were until they had a massive crossover hit, and I don't give two shits either".
It's about the history, pompeii was near a volcano (Vesuv) and this song is about the eruption of this one. The Vesuv erupts and the walls of the city are tumbling down and clouds of dust went down from the vesuv in the city...
the sad thing about pompeii is that it was discovered that they had early warning and an earthquake much earlier indicating the volcano was active. however the people of pompeii had a very good lot in life and were doing very well for themselves. I love this. Dan's voice is so soft and warm....fits perfectly with the choir and the instruments. Makes me want to be able to make music as good as this. Perfect.

Best tune I've heard it a while
Truely amazing in every aspect of music!

the chorus overwhelms the singer much less
Their music won't sell unless it has computerized beats. No one listens to this music anymore.

The lead singer was born on July 14, Bastille Day. It's a French holiday, that's what the band was named after. It is pronounced Bast-ee-yuh
New favourite band. I'm in love.

Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above"

"But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all"
This was the song I listened to as 2012 turned into 2013. It made me happy
i saw them on exhibit in san diego. heartwrenching, along with the dog.
Love this new song so much
