  • Jesus chose a very specific location to ask His disciples the profound question: "who do people say that I am?" Barry discusses the pagan history of Caesarea Philippi and its idolatrous practices and why Jesus could have chosen this place as the backdrop to his question.

Cesaria Philippi also stood at the bottom of Mount Hermon, the highest mountain in Israel. This mountain is where the Canaanite pantheon of El, Asherah, and their 70 sons was said to meet. I believe Jesus sending 70-72 disciples ahead of him later on was intentional partly due to this. Mount Hermon is also the place in the book of Enoch where the fallen angel watchers met to make a deal on. This same mountain is also considered a possible place for the Transfiguration. If Jesus truly Transfigured on Mount Hermon, it would be like His big reveal and claim to the demonic false gods that He (the Son of God) was finally here to take back what the Father had allowed His fallen rebellious sons to run rampant on.

"If Jesus truly Transfigured on Mount Hermon, it would be like His big reveal and claim to the demonic false gods that He (the Son of God) was finally here to take back what the Father had allowed His fallen rebellious sons to run rampant on." super interesting thought... Do you know Dr. Michael Heiser by any chance? He basically states the same thing [as far as I remember correctly]...
      Agape!

I do. When I first developed a deep faith in Jesus Christ, Heiser kind of freaked me out (Heresy! Run!). But the more I read and study Scripture, the more I appreciate his thoughts.

@@joshrichards9121 Cool. The same here. I had the chance to see Banyas 2 years ago. Would have been more intense if I had this knowledge back then :) Amazing place. Especially the crystal clear river filled with water from the Hermon.
      God bless!

Have a great trip! Yes, permits and proper licensing will be required. You can read up on most of the rules at places like this: uavcoach.com/drone-laws-in-israel/

Interesting that Jesus would decide to speak about the establishment of his Kingdom here, at a place where pagans sacrificed children. With him being the only "child" that would ever need "sacrificing".

You missed the oportunity to explain two misunderstood things in the Bible which can both be demonstrated at that site. The Very next verse after the one you mentioned is often misunderstood to say that Jesus said he would build his church on Peter, but two different greek words are used. The one for describing Peter is the word for little rock, or pebble. Then Jesus used a different Greek word, which is the word for A large or massive rock, for what he would build his church on.... referencing the massive rock they were all looking at, where the cave. which was thought of as the "Gates of Hell", was in and all of the false god worship was being done by the gentiles. The significance of this location shows that he will build his church with the gentiles, over the top of and displacing their pagan gods.
The second misconception that can also be cleared up here at this location is the use of rocks or stones in building. People keep believing that Jesus was a carpenter, which is untrue. There was no forest available to supply the lumber necessary for carpenters. Their structures were built from stacking stones on each other. The original Greek word used in the Bible to describe the profession of Jesus and Joseph was for a builder, not a carpenter. Jesus was a builder of stone who said that upon this rock he will build his church. We are all stones, or rocks, that are laid beside each other to build the church by Jesus, the builder.
