Emirates doesn't give complimentary upgrades for platinum either. If you're getting upgrades now it's because they are operational upgrades and you're at the top of the list after economy has been oversold.
They do if economy is overbooked and business isn’t, whoever is the highest tier in economy will be upgraded first, at the gate. I was EK gold years ago and flying economy Jakarta to Dubai I was upgraded to business more times than I actually sat in economy on all the flights I took, as they always overbooked economy on that leg. So it can happen, but won’t happen to someone who isn’t platinum/gold already I highly doubt
I’m Emirates Gold, and have been upgraded multiple times from economy to biz, and biz to first on flights that are full / overbooked. Never gotten an upgrade on flights that have seats vacant.
I’ve flown economy all my life. If I ever get an upgrade, cool. If not, i don’t really care. I just wanna reach my destination safely. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters to me.
That is just sad, even as a child I saw after the first two times that economy sucked hard and to always go for business or first class after my parents upgraded at the gate as a surprise.
Right, like they would give a no status person priority over one of their loyal Gold or higher - or whatever they call their levels - members. 30 years ago, perhaps?
I always dress up for flights. I've been upgraded twice on long-haul. Another nice move is to greet the flight attendants on entering the plane. They really appreciate being treated well. Thanking them on leaving is also a kindness.
I doubt that very much, it’s not up to the crew to upgrade, there isn’t much extra food onboard, business vs economy food, it isn’t possible to make bulkhead requests via the phone and then there is the pre calculated weight balancing. But the signing up it true, if the flight is overbooked, and few or no other members are onboard, you get the upgrade, that happened to a friend of mine.
I'm flying a ton, have the highest status and got upgraded to Business for free once, because the plane was overbooked. A business ticket costs 5x the amount of Economy, they don't give that away if they don't have to unfortunately. You also can't trick them by just sitting in Business, because they have an iPad and check each Business guest in manually :D
Yeah….no This day & age (I’m 63) flights are packed. FF who have premium status always get the upgrade. oh by the way , when traveling….comfort is king. I agree, being nice and polite never hurts any chance for potential upgrade or perk like a free drink in coach.
I've taken eight flights this year. Six of them were completely booked. First class and business class were always booked up. You have a good idea if there's extra room on the plane.
Without doing anything whatsoever I have been invited to board business about 8 times over the past 6 yrs. Ii have no explanation for this. They have all been US to London flights on different airlines. Also some domestic. east coast to LA. I am minding my own business waiting to board economy and someone will approach and ask if I would like to be bumped up. I honestly think it’s just good luck. I do always dress very well to fly, probably more so than most around me but I’m not convinced that’s the reason. Perhaps my subconscious is willing it at this point. Lol.
Other than signing up for the loyalty programme and dressing well nothing else will help get a free upgrade. If you are not polite, basically rude chances of you getting bumped off becomes high. Emirates upgrade is based on the Ticket fare and higher tier Skywards membership nothing else unless you are extremely lucky
As someone who flies a lot I can tell you that this only works if you have a huge amount of miles. If an airline has free upgrades available, they go to the most loyal customers. Used to work as a check in passenger officer. While I was checking in. One couple even told me that they are just married and asked if they can have free upgrade to business class and the answer is NO ! If you ever been told by someone that might work. Let me tell you it will never work, unless you have ton of mile as their membership with that airline. You might get offer to upgrade as airline might need some empty seats in economic class as they might have been overbooked. The higher rank will be received the offer first and go on. One thing this guy said correctly is, when the airline offer you free upgrade, your appearance is very important. You will have more potentiality to be upgraded when you dress more business type. Of course, no slipper and no tank top whatsoever.
I've never had any upgrades from eco to business but, One time, i won 2 return economy tickets to Japan and i took it and used it. When i got transit to change plane, connecting plane decided to leave without some of us and it wasn't our faults because our flight was delayed and arrived late. So, the airline collected us who got left behind, apologised, and gave us complimentary hotels to stay the night while waiting for the Next Day plane. And when i arrived at the airport for that changed timeline, i checked in and they said that the specific plane already left, and i was like Whhaaaattt? My companion was already complaining at me(not that it's ny fault), But luckily, the check-in lady was very kind and she decided to give me a complimentary tickets FOR FREE for us so that we could go home. I was like, so relieved and thanked her like so much and i waited to be called and depart. Wiuhhhhh, what an experience for me, that was, ngl.
I was traveling with a couple, and they were with me in the economy section. The plane wasn't full, and they asked if they could sleep in at first class. The flight attendant was polite and allowed them the upgrade without any charges.
Sorry, this will rarely work. Maybe on some unpopular route with a half empty business class cabin. First off FF programs work by tiers and seniority. Software decides who gets the upgrade, usually days before a flight. Used to be miles now it’s SPEND mostly. And calling? That does nothing. Those people have little/no say. Maybe are in a call center in another country. Show up early; politely ask the person at check in, remind them you’re still interested. Yes, dressing well helps make a good impression.
I was upgraded only once and I did none of this. I arrived to Abu Dhabi from JFK with 80 Indian students in economy. They were noisy and it was a mess. Could not get even an hour’s sleep. I usually pay for aisle seats so when I got to the gate counter, this lady cut my seat number and put in 9B. Conversation that followed “Why did you change that, I really need my aisle seat” “You’ve been bumped up” “No, I really can’t sit in the middle seat” “You’ve been upgraded to business class” “Ohhhh, thank you so much” 😮😮😮
Many airlines now send emails to customers when economy class is oversold. This is an offer to upgrade for a fixed amount or to put in a bid. Often, this offer is made at check in too. Frequent fliers are also encouraged to redeem their points. This way, the airline can maximize their revenue before handing out freebees to frequent fliers based on their fares and tiers. A well dressed customer is quite low in the pecking order. Trust me, there is not a lot that these airline staff have not come across already.
Most important thing is to sign up to the airlines loyalty program You will never get upgraded if you don't. I've been upgraded 5 times on one leg of my long haul flight to Thailand from Ireland.
For two years I got upgraded from economy to business on every flight I took, on 2 different airlines (5-6 in total in 2013-2014). I wasn't even a member of either loyalty program. I still have no idea why. I always flew alone and was decently dressed but that can't be the whole explanation. At some point it just stopped and I've never been upgraded since.
Dress up because you're the Star of your movie of life. Not for anything external. Dressing your way can mean a three piece suit or cowboy style or something urban but still looking classy. Dressing up doesn't mean someone else's interpretation
Step 1 book economy seat, step 2 hold Ctrl, alt, and Fn at the same time while simultaneously touching backspace repeatedly, then reboot - business class. It worked for me and many other too and idiots will believe it
I was cabin crew for Emirates, this creates such unnecessary expectations when people get on board because a lot goes into consideration, catering in business class, frequent flyers who might be in economy and are platinum members. It’s a lot!
Balik lg ke preference owner sih, kenapa cleaning tools ga disimpan di laundry room ya, lemari penyimpanan biar full utk stok sehari2. Namun, suka ide nya utk lemari penyimpanan, krn barang keperluan sehari2, seperti lap2, tas belanja, alat jahit, batre, tisu, dll perlu juga ada tempat tersendiri apalagi utk kami, family of 6. 4 anak, remaja - bayi. Rumahnya benar2 worth to wait. Masa pembangunan yg cukup panjang hingga jadi seperti itu. Masya Allah..
I’ve never dressed to impress when I’ve bought a first class or business class seat. If you can afford to dress to impress, use the money pay for your higher-class ticket, and go about your day.
That is some weird housewive's 'psychology' right there. Also: Dress to impress on a flight? Yeah, you better dress to be comfortable. Your showing off will do nothing if you're cold or sweaty or just plain uncomfortable.
Man, am I simple. I only prebook my window seat so I can look outside. 😅 Tho this august I’m going on my first long flight. Can’t wait to see how that will go.
Oh! You can actually ask for an upgrade. I was a check in staff for Qatar Airways and sometimes I used upgrade passengers when they requested for an upgrade but they have to be nice and polite also well dressed. But we can only upgrade passengers when economic class is overbooked, we upgrade gold and silver members first then well dressed passengers, sometimes I upgraded nice and well behaved passengers if I like them even though their dressing is okay. Actually this what all check in staffs do.
You’re missing the point of biz class. Expedited check in/boarding/close-by lounge, seat selection. Speed (no need to spend time negotiating) + convenience, not just comfort.

I get an automatic upgrade every time. Instead of sitting on the wing fighting the wind I get bumped into economy. Being nice pays
Conversation that followed
“Why did you change that, I really need my aisle seat”
“You’ve been bumped up”
“No, I really can’t sit in the middle seat”
“You’ve been upgraded to business class”
“Ohhhh, thank you so much” 😮😮😮
Am i the only one who will never use such tricks but still watching him carefully 😂
Nice.
Most important thing is to sign up to the airlines loyalty program You will never get upgraded if you don't.
I've been upgraded 5 times on one leg of my long haul flight to Thailand from Ireland.
Hello 👋 What airline is this 🤔
For two years I got upgraded from economy to business on every flight I took, on 2 different airlines (5-6 in total in 2013-2014). I wasn't even a member of either loyalty program. I still have no idea why. I always flew alone and was decently dressed but that can't be the whole explanation. At some point it just stopped and I've never been upgraded since.
The quote of the year: “It’s a Boeing, so let’s hope nothing bad happens” ~Eric Struk 😅😂
Edit: thanks for 10 likes ❤️
Dress up because you're the Star of your movie of life. Not for anything external. Dressing your way can mean a three piece suit or cowboy style or something urban but still looking classy. Dressing up doesn't mean someone else's interpretation
Step 1 book economy seat, step 2 hold Ctrl, alt, and Fn at the same time while simultaneously touching backspace repeatedly, then reboot - business class. It worked for me and many other too and idiots will believe it
To fly business, you need to be a regular flying member and pay $$ for the ticket. And I do both and enjoy my trip! There are no shortcuts.
New member? You'll be lucky if they don't laugh in your face.
I was cabin crew for Emirates, this creates such unnecessary expectations when people get on board because a lot goes into consideration, catering in business class, frequent flyers who might be in economy and are platinum members. It’s a lot!
You could also just buy business class tickets and not do this song and dance that will likely fail.
That last Aerial shot was mesmerizing bro 😍😍
I like it when people dress nice and are clean on aircraft
It helps if you actually travel frequently for business and your business has a high tier account with the airline
Balik lg ke preference owner sih, kenapa cleaning tools ga disimpan di laundry room ya, lemari penyimpanan biar full utk stok sehari2.
Namun, suka ide nya utk lemari penyimpanan, krn barang keperluan sehari2, seperti lap2, tas belanja, alat jahit, batre, tisu, dll perlu juga ada tempat tersendiri apalagi utk kami, family of 6.
4 anak, remaja - bayi.
Rumahnya benar2 worth to wait. Masa pembangunan yg cukup panjang hingga jadi seperti itu.
Masya Allah..
I’ve never dressed to impress when I’ve bought a first class or business class seat.
If you can afford to dress to impress, use the money pay for your higher-class ticket, and go about your day.
Sounds like a stressful way to travel. I just book the ticket and go.
Yeah. I’m showing up with zero miles on my account. Need a bulk-head I called. Ok sir. F-class doesn’t board for another 45min 😂
It technically isn’t free because you still have to pay for the economy seat 😂
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 "SURE" 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That is some weird housewive's 'psychology' right there. Also: Dress to impress on a flight? Yeah, you better dress to be comfortable. Your showing off will do nothing if you're cold or sweaty or just plain uncomfortable.
I love how smooth you lie 😂
It work on braindead people
Man, am I simple. I only prebook my window seat so I can look outside. 😅 Tho this august I’m going on my first long flight. Can’t wait to see how that will go.
Thank you 🙏 love 💕 much needed info. I greatly appreciate you!
❤❤❤! Dress up also nice wear branded stuff but still put me behind 😂😂😂😮just keep quite thankfull atleast still get inside 😮❤
I tried now I’m seated where I was but now whole crew is staring me
Step 1 Stop living outside your means. Step 2 be grateful youre able to fly.
STEP NO. 6 - Book a business class ticket, if you have money.
I’d be happy just to get a window seat close to the bathroom!
It’s not free if it’s an upgrade from economy to business, you still have to buy any ticket lolz 😝
I tried that...on a budget flight, it works!
there's another way: check in at the last minute, they already sold all the economy class seats and left some business class seats for spare
Great info. Be blessed. Luck doesn’t exist. Amen 🙏🏽
I like to pay for things...but that's just me.
Nothing wrong with hoodies or being comfortable 😅
I don't fly business class, not my class. I fly First Class economy (thats what i like to call it) 😆😂
Since when "dress nice" means "no sweatpants or hoodies", I mean... the bar is so low nowadays.
You’re missing the point of biz class. Expedited check in/boarding/close-by lounge, seat selection. Speed (no need to spend time negotiating) + convenience, not just comfort.
Saying as an ex flight attendant this is such a BS🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMAO.. think airline still answer your calls for silly request like this!? you need to pay for bulkhead seats now!
