    Hurdlers don't get the attention and credit they deserve compared to sprinters. I competed in the decathlon in the 1960s. The hurdles to me was the most challenging event, even more so than the pole vault.

      I haven’t been running for that long. I have only done middle school track and did the 100m and 400m but for my first year of high school I decided to run the 55m hurdles for indoor track and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I am genuinely looking forward to the 110m hurdles in spring track and everyday I love running even more because of hurdles.

    This is an amazing world record, everything about this race is so technical! The men’s 400m hurdle record is next! It will be broken by either Rai Benjamin or Karsten Warholm.

      dont be so sure of that i think. many times athletes have approached WRs and shown promise and even assumed that they would break a WR and never achieved it. Personally i think KW had his chance in 2020 and couldnt do it. Sadly if there had been an olympics he may have done it there, but its possible that this was the only time in his career that he got to that kind of form and fitness- in prep for an olympics. we'll see.

    And to think before 2012 Merritt hadn’t even broken 13 seconds yet in the 110 hurdles. He ran 13.09 back in 2007 so it was a long time coming but still, truly a remarkable season that I couldn’t believe 8 years ago. He truly ran the perfect race on the perfect day. It’s unfortunate that his decline in health never let him be quite the same, but for just a single year he was indestructible, and that’s still something to be in awe of.

    The top hurdlers should always run the 100m a couple times each season. The general public doesn't understand exactly what the 110m performances represent.
    That 12.80 he ran would probably translate into a sub 9.80 100m(if not faster).
    Not only the hurdlers are some the fastest people, they also run an unforgiving race. Mistakes cost much more in the 110m than in the 100m.
    Respect to the hurdlers untill I see friends on track and call them failed sprinters again ;)
    Great vid

    • @SuperBEEFMAN1
      @SuperBEEFMAN1 3 роки тому +2

      Not even close it would probably translate to 9.80! Only Omar Mcleod has broken 10secs with 9.99 and his technique isn't the greatest! Colin Jackson was a 10.20 100m runner and personally think he had the best technique ever! I would suggest Merrits 100m speed is probably around the 10secs flat mark.
      Merrit is technically great too but remember he used 7 strides to the first hurdle! Something Colin Jackson had disagreed with Merrit but it worked for him!

      @@SuperBEEFMAN1 because they don't run 100m regularly. Most hurdlers stop running 100m years before reaching their prime, that's why their 100m PBs aren't that good. Aries Meritt 100% would have run a 100m under 9.80 when he beat the 110m world record.

    the point of a hurdles record being difficult in that the barriers force the athlete to check their stride as 2 strides isnt possible. Thats why its been 35+ years pretty much to bring down the record from Nehemiah's 12.93 to a shade under 12.90.
    in the same period of time, the 100m WR has dropped almost half a second..the 400m gone by almost a full second and the 200m by over half a second.
    by those figures, a distance of 110m shouldve been bettered by at least 0.25s conservatively but more like 0.35..down to 12.6x.
    but those pesky barriers dont allow a simple extrapolation over distance.

    In 2017, I set up the last 5 hurdles for all lanes at the Drake Relays in Iowa. It had Merrit, Parchment, and McCloud. McCloud actually ran faster (13.05) in that event than he did at the Olympic games the year before for his gold medal. Very fun to see and have short conversations with those guys, being a hurdler in high school the years before that myself. I only got 5th for my State meet in high hurdles, but my hurdle friends and I still own the national record for the shuttle hurdle relay for high school. Very proud of that.

He seriously could have contested a 100m medal or even in olympic weightlifting if he trained properly. He squatted 230kg and cleaned 155kg at 75kg bodyweight, and a 100m PB of 10.4 without ever running doing proper running repeats in training (read his training log). We know from training logs that when he was training with linford christie and frankie fredericks he was beating them in 30m time trials. Team GB certainly missed a trick by not including him on the 4x100 relays. It's been 25 years and noone has come close to his 18m+ jumps

      mate , aths fans dont need or want your kind of comment. The fact is that athletics is cleaner than its ever been. but I wont run you through the reasons why and how 202X compares to yesteryear- you can google the testing protocols and methods yourself. Hint: records arent tumbling on a regular basis anymore..and when they do go they are usually to a single one of a generation athlete as opposed to the 60s/70s when multiple different athletes were taking them.

    • @moderndaysparta7770
      @moderndaysparta7770 3 роки тому

      @@timn4481 Here's the deal. A lot of the steroids/chemicals used to "enhance" performance occur naturally in the human body. So, the ruling authorities set an upper bound; if you exceed this level, you fail. The authorities recognize that some people naturally have higher levels than others, with Olympians perhaps having unusually high levels, so they set the upper bound pretty high (sometimes 3-8x times the average amount found in ordinary people). Chemical "cheating" is allowed, provided you don't exceed this threshold. Teams have doctors that monitor the athletes' levels and raise them as high as possible without exceeding the allowable range. So is it like the wild heyday of the 60s and 70s? (whose records have all been shattered, btw) No. Pharmacists work hard to ensure that their athletes get all the advantage possible, without failing a test. Hence, it's a competition of pharmacists.

    Not do detract from the feat itself (which requires a ton of hard work and discipline), but doesn't anyone else find it odd that so many of these elite athletes - who I presume have been testing negative for PEDs all along - acquire some significant ailment affecting organs (and/or die) so young? My point is that it seems like it has happened far too many times for it to just be a coincidence. And *_EVERY ONE_* of the caught cheaters said they didn't dope/cheat before they admitted to doping/cheating. Every. Single. One.
