An action movie hero and world-renowned martial artist hailing from Belgium, Jean-Claude Van Damme burst onto the Hollywood scene with classic martial arts films "Bloodsport" (1988) and "Kickboxer" (1989). Van Damme was suddenly a star and broadened his fan base from fight film fanatics to general action film fans with critically panned, but commercially successful blockbusters like "Universal Soldier" (1992) and "Time Cop" (1994). Unlike his more popular counterparts, Van Damme projected a softer character who was not as invincible as Schwarzenegger nor as unrefined as Stallone. Van Damme's vehicles in the 1990s like "Sudden Death" (1995), "Maximum Risk" (1996) and "Double Team" (1997) were fairly formulaic, requiring him to speak little but display as much of his muscular physique as possible - all of which eventually turned the actor into a caricature of himself and demoted the actor to the straight-to-video bin. Meanwhile, Van Damme hit rock bottom in his personal life when he sought help for his cocaine addiction and was diagnosed with manic depression, which he began talking about openly in 1998. Though he was able to resurrect himself in private, Van Damme continued to struggle on the screen until he surprised everyone with a critically hailed performance as a fictional version of himself in the art house showbiz satire "JCVD" (2008). In the end, however, his appeal rarely went beyond his impressive physicality, as Van Damme continued trying to cross over to mainstream thrillers and dramas with little avail.

I must say he was my hero when I was a kid. Remember trying to fight and perform those classic kicks with my brothers, haha. I used to watch all of his movies, some times 4 or 5 in a row on saturdays.

Always and forever will be my go to guy for my childhood. If I ever seen him passing by in real life i'd freak out but remain calm. Imagine the amount of people our generation that has come up to him asking for an autograph or picture.

Thomas Schmidt I'm not scared, just concerned. It's actually kind of physically painful (joints, aching back, etc.). I'm 48 now. Van Damme was a very positive influence on me (fitness-wise) when I was in my late teens and early 20s.
Why should anyone in their right mind be scared of getting old? All of us will get old and die one day, that's just the way the world works. Actually, you should be glad if you reach old age, because that means that you've had the chance to live a full life. Or would you prefer to die young?

He was a coke addict by his own admission during the 90's and he also confessed to using drugs, and that it contributed to his first divorce from Gladis Portugal, and Joe Rogan recently claimed on his podcast that he allegedly still uses cocaine today also....
in the movie JCVD he tells the story about cocaine and the movie business and one of his ex ladies give it to him to taste it.
i believe him when he arrived in hollywood he was a guy from a small village dive into the fucking sex, drugs and rock n roll industry of hollywood.
and he looks older now because of cocaine and solarium watch cyborg, karate tiger 3 and bloodsport how brown dark skinned there he is.
Also there are plenty videos of him walking shirtless in L.A ( where the sun is super strong ), and we don't even know if he drinks or not...
He has been dying his hair at least since 2010, and he is balding at the top of his head from the back.
I feel sad for him, i like him as a person and action actor...
So, the lesson to be learned from this is that everyone grows old.

The man has caused himself some health issues with drug use. Too bad, I also was a child who took karate to kick like him. Did I ever do it...YES. Ok, B.S, I never really did learn to kick like him... He has amazing kicks and I never got to his level.
