- Volvo Cars safety engineers had to completely redesign and reinforce the frontal structure of the XC40 Recharge P8 AWD to deal with the absence of an engine, meet Volvo Cars’ high safety requirements and help keep occupants as safe as in any other Volvo.
The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium and has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s placement in the floor of the car also has the benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs.
At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.
The XC40 Recharge P8 is also the first Volvo model equipped with a new, scalable Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform with software developed by Zenuity, the joint venture firm owned by Volvo Cars and Veoneer.

Volvos are built strongly. It is one of the reasons they are usually heavier than corresponding models from other manufacturers. This also affects fuel consumption. Safety is not free. I love Volvos.
Not that bad nowadays. A previous model D4 XC60 barely managed 20Km/l or 5l/100Km, which is relatively impressive.
No, their cars still have very good fuel efficiency compared to competitors. At least in the luxury segment. Not many three rows like the XC90 can boast up to 30mpg.

I would not care trading some efficiency and range for that kind of safety.
This looks like the safest car I have ever seen.
I hope Volvo convinces other brands to try head this way as this could really reduce fatal collisions not that it gets rid of Human error.

Muy bueno ese modelo ya puede pasar las 5 estrellas eurocap ,no todos los modelos volvo lo hacen ,a pesar de su tecnología al final lo han conseguido a base de mucha investigación ,solo le falta tecnología de motor que no tienen para los motores euro 6 tem esperemos que sepan hacer la futura euro 7 Lo tienen complicado ,tienen que sacar 60 g/ km lastima que no tienen motores con tecnología avanzada ,como los alemanes ,pero bueno ahí están de momento ,un saludo a todo el departamento de I + D + I

@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 I just looked at the videos, sure it receives 5 stars, but isn’t any safer than a Volvo besides rollover. If not less safe, again besides a rollover though the recharge xc40 is just as hard to rollover.

This company should manufacture TANKS not just cars.
At 2:16, the seat does not move inward away from the side impact like Volvos with the SIPS system. But there is also virtually no intrusion of the impact through the door either. This is not a normal Volvo side impact. Has SIPS been ditched because of the battery in the floor? ...... PS; Remember when Elon Musk made a fool of himself showing that the Mode S had less intrusion into the door than the S60? He totally didn't understand the Volvo SIPS which moves the seat away from the side impact and crushes the center console. The XC40 P8 seems to be different from other Volvos though.

Any real tests this can actually do 260 miles in good conditions and not heavy right food?
We know polestar 2 does not meet it's stated range and it is pretty weak on efficiency (it is thirsty on electricity)
The engine and battery is said to be identical to the polestar, so expect less range than it will get (SUV has more wind-resistance).
What really put me off is when i read a car-testers review about the engine having a nanny system, where if you take a corner too quickly, it will not let you accelerate out of the corner, even if you press the pedal all the way down. It will just gently speed up.
This might even be dangerous on a gravel or snowy road if you wish to kick out the back a little for extra steering, if you are about to go wide.
Also i dont like some safety system kicking in when im trying to have fun (in an appropriate, non-public-road area ofcause). My experience with Volvo is if there is a safety system, you can not turn it off, especially these kinds of safety systems. If anything you can tone it down a little, but never turn it off completely.
