What’s amazing is when the original mask was made, they just threw it together from the Kirk mask at breakneck speed. Now it takes more effort to replicate the original look
That's what happens when you're working off intuition vs actually trying. It's always best to go with the flow if you can. That's why most sequels suck because you're trying to capture the same feeling of something that at that time had no predecessor
@@toddbridgesx the original mask was just plain appliance white but the lighting is what made it so scary, then in part 2 the mask was stored under a bed with heavy smoking going on and it yellowed it some. Also Dick Warlocks head stretched it more. I’m sure you all know this already tho lol
Nah if you get a 75 kirk pull with good quality hair and do a conversion it's pretty quick work.
Paint 2 colors. Maybe some matte clear coat. Some glue remover and removing the eyebrows and side burns. The eye cuts aren't hard either. People trying to hard is why the masks usually don't look as good.
Someone tell this man you can just buy a William Shatner mask online and recreate The Shape's mask perfectly
@@stinkywhizzleteats3673 not entirely. You can't get 75 done post studios Kirk's anymore.
You can get recast versions but not all are accurate as the recasting process. Also not all don post Kirk's come from the correct mould.
You also have to deal with alot of masks being stretched before recasting.
Tots masks are sculpted with castle stretch taken into account.
It's not as easy as you think to get screen accurate replicas. It also requires some specific shit to get the eye holes cut perfectly shaped if you care to go that far.
When removing the hairline if the factory paint does come off u can use naphtha to thin the paint down like flush with the latex & just paint over it. Or if your skilled enuff with the dremel u can sand the paint down flush as well. Saves loads of time. Great video. Best eye cut tutorial I’ve seen!
Currently in that same situation with my 78 myers mask and have the whole forehead peeled off. First time rehauler question; When using naphtha, is there any concern with over applicating and affecting the mask?
@@alpass72886 no. You can use as much as needed. Although it will distort or swell the mask temporarily, it will go back to normal after about an hour or so. Just be sure to clean all the naphtha after you finish with water.
@@alpass72886 forgot to mention but you do wanna be careful around fragile areas like the mouth slit, eyes, etc. I have ripped a mask or 2 in the past when things don’t go as planned. Just use care around the areas where it may rip.

Subscribed! I have always had a fascination with horror movie masks and characters. When I was in 7th grade I checked out a book from the school library titled "Movie Monsters" with mostly Bela Legosi and Lon Cheney characters. The book discusses how to make corn starch based skin and so forth. I spent hours in the mirror creating faces and shaving my sisters Barbie dolls to make Wolfman makeup. I still have the book 30 years later....wonder how much my overdue fines are? I still make masks and create my own monsters for Halloween and some take 5-6 months to build a complete latex and or silicone costume. The kid in me has never left. Awesome job on redoing Michael. By far my favorite horror movie mask and its simplicity i think adds to his scare factor. Look forward to seeing more of your videos

If you want to make a perfect Michael Myers mask you need to paint the face without covering up the hair and then paint the hair without covering up the face. That’s the way Tommy Lee Wallace did it on the original mask and that’s where the dark shades came from uncertain spots because he did not shield the mask when he painted it.

Cool shelly you said this would come out..Appreciate it man. I came about 3 weeks ago purchased 3 myers masks with my brother. I think you stripping the paint off was a good idea..Im going to do the same..Because the layer they put on isnt workable..The hair ill just use goo gone so i dont go through the pain like you did lol..

Its funny how all this work is done by artist with painting etc.. when the original mask was just made in like 5 minutes lol, they just cut out the eyes a bit, ripped some hair off, spray painted some black on the hair and spray painted white on the mask and done. Its all about the lighting that gives it that presence like in the film.
I really love tots H78 mask I’ve got one it started my collection so it’s untouched. I’ve gotten a few tots Kirk masks I’ve overhauled myself

One thing I notice with all the new Myers masks’ is they never get the hair right. In the film, his hair seemed a lot thicker in the back and had little curls on the ends. Just my opinion.

Sorry if already asked.....If I didnt want to go through the whole process of stripping off the factory paint, can I just clean the mask really good with alcohol or thinner and go straight into painting it with a flesh tone color Night Shades paint?
Yeah totally this is literally the only time I’ve ever done that cuz there was an issue with paint peeling. Just use water to clean and start painting p
My mask paint messed up to and it sucked I had no idea how to get it off until I started sanding it myself it sucked even after I could not get it back clean so there is small bumps on the mask I almost threw it away
It would be so cool if someone bought the original mask and applied all the realistic damage from real bullets and weapons and then re-haul

Appliance white is what was used on the original its still made also sold under that ACE brand as Appliance white same manufacturer
Yes but spray paint will crack and fall off over time as well as eat into the latex. The current state of the hero mask is a good example of why not to use it. It worked great for the film but it was not made to last. Also, in my experience, the shade of white is less important than the skin tone that sits under it.

You should've sprayed the hair black or white like Ben Tramer.
The base color of the mask should be burned sienna. Washing the white off gives the flesh tone.
1978:just paint the face white,remove the sideburns,and make the eyeholes bigger were trying to freak people out....
1995 and up:Do your absolute best to replicate the 1978 mask were trying to capture past glory

Man, I hate when the hair is glued on there too well! I've had a couple peel off easily, and a couple rip the paint with it... and then you have to take the rest of the paint off by hand and with a dremel which takes forever as you know.

On my 78 mask, do you recommend to repaint it all from flesh skin to the fright white?? and does the white paint (stock) thats on it affect it in any way??
I would suggest doing it how I did it but that's just me.

I bought two kirks and the hair didn’t want to come off.
I'm still rehauling my 78 mask and the hair glue is a real bitch. I don't want to rip off the paint so I'm gonna try goo-gone to get off the glue and little bits of hair tomorrow. The first 2 inches pulled off clean but the rest was really on there. I'm not doing a crazy rehaul, just a lazy quick rehaul. Dull the shine, dirty it up, fix the eyes, and glue back the hair...let it dry over night and give him his do. But damn this glue is a bitch.

Does it have to be distilled water or could it be any kind of water 🤷🏽♂️
Distilled water is better. Any water will work but it has a lot of impurities that can corrode away at your airbrush and stuff.
How much do you charge to regulate a mask?
Can you kind of say where you got the close up reference photos? I can't find any close up like this.
Honestly I just googled 1978 Michael Myers mask and did a deep dive and saved all my favorites.
I’m not even joking, how much would I have to pay to have you rehaul mine. I’m being serious dude. My mask is crappy and it needs a major rehaul. If you are able to do that, let me know because that would be awesome and I will be eternally grateful.

Are you using latex based paints? Regular acrylic paint will not stick well to the mask.

Yeah but you’ll want to soak the brush in soapy water before use and between coats or the latex will stick to the brush and clump up.

Is the paint already mixed with liquid latex?
The paint is latex based. So It is mixed with mask making latex. You don't want to use liquid latex in your paints. Yes mask making latex is a liquid too but it doesn't have a lot of additives and water like "liquid latex" from Spirit halloween or something has.

How should I seal the mask to make it preserved?
There are a lot of different ways to seal a mask. For this mask I used a 50/50 mixture of mask latex and water-based polyurethane.

About 50 when spraying latex, 20 with ink
