wonkey comb is burr comb according to university of Minnesota bee lab under Marla Spivak - Gary Reuter in his demonstration on building comb. They work great for bee as ladders but is not good when inspecting comb just to scrape out or Randy Oliver knows people in Chile that press it to the bottom of the comb panel to reuse back on the frames.
I've searched everything to learn as much as possible and your videos just help the most! You break things down and explain everything beautifully. Thank you
Hi David, Question: My husband and I took our county club's beginning beekeeping course and due to our age, decided that we would use 8-frame medium boxes - except for our bottom brood box. We received and installed our 2 nuts a week ago, and will be doing our first inspection today! I expect to find that we'll need to add a super, hopefully on both the colonies. However we are wondering if we should go ahead and add 2 medium supers per colony, or just 1? Because of your tips in this video, I think we should just add 1 medium super per colony, wait until they've built up frame and brood, and then perhaps insert the second super in between the original deep and the medium super that we'll be adding today. Do you have any recommendations? And thank you so very much for your content - you've answered so many questions I didn't even know I had!
When I add a 2nd BB I lift off the occupied one from the floor, add the new box and put the first one on top. I do this when the first box is at 8 frames of brood and no need at all to faff about queen finding. Why complicate what is about the simplest manipulation there is?
Thanks for taking the time and effort to share; although, I was surprised by your comment of 3500 cells of capped brood. If you have honey and pollen on the frame, then there can't be 3500 cells of capped brood, especially with the video showing not all cells were capped with brood; noting, yes, you have an excellent queen brood pattern which was the intent, understand.
As for smoker fuel I use dry horse and cow turds, they light easy, stay lit good and make a lot of cool smoke. It's just fine ground grass fiber compacted very tight.
I love to watch your videos. You talk at a great speed and are entertaining and give great information. Thank you. I’m brand new just got my bees last Saturday. ❤ 🐝
Another great informational clip...thank you! Concern, placed my nuc in my first deep on Wednesday, they were doing well. I'm going to be away from them for over a week, and I'm worried that the second deep should be placed on prior to seven days until my return. Will they be okay?
New beekeeper here, subscribed to your channel and been watching your videos to educate me, excellent content! I've made a series of mistakes as expected but I am learning with trial and error. A big mistake was I put a new package in a new box and was counting on my bee suit to show up before I got the bees but as luck would have it, it was three weeks late and so I was late on removing my queen box from the hive. The bees are doing fantastic but the extra space caused them to fill a whole frame with brood that is outside of the frame only attached to the lip of the frame, when I removed it, it detached and crumbled to the ground. I got most of the bees back in the hive but now the frame on one side is empty except a partial comb in the corner that is also to wide. I was able to push the frames closer together but not completely because I didn't want to destroy the remaining bit of comb and or injure the queen if she happened to be on it. Should I go back in and remove that last piece of comb so I can properly fit the frames together so as not to have the same problem happen again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Just caught one of my swarms last week. They were NOT docile like everyone says they will be. Sooooo glad I didn't try and "save the bees" like bee lady with no gloves 😂
Both my hives swarmed even with a second deep on both. Couldn’t catch either. I think I need to pull some of the Queen cells and make a third hive so they don’t swarm again.
I really only use gloves if they have warned me a few times...Wasps hurt a lot more than bees... I find bee stings to be more itchy and annoying than actually painful... I was stung by yellow jackets a week or so before getting stung by bees in my hive.
Nice, but I create most video ideas and story board them out several weeks in advance, so that one has been on the list for two weeks to go out today. But I always welcome new ideas. Glad the timing was right. That's what I shoot for.
I feel it sometimes has to do with frames not being pushed together tightly, or not enough wax on the foundation or the hive not level and sometimes it just because Jupiter wasn't lined up with the moon just right 🤷🏻♂️
I see and hear of people in tank tops, no hat or veil, no gloves and shorts and slippers. Uh, that will one day go very bad. Better to have too much on than not enough. Hope it wasn't too painful. Plus, with shorts on bees can crawl up your legs and they don't have far to go before things become RED ALERT!!!
Wonky yes a few times it’s happened, the frame could be perfectly drawn most of the way down and then there would be 4-5 lines of wonky crazy comb the rest of the frame. 😂😂😂
I added a 2nd deep last year when my bees had 5 good frames in the 1st deep, but they have just chimneyed up and not done anything with the frames on the outside edges. I suspect I did it too late in the year last year. They appear to have survived the winter thanks to the winter be kind but I feel like I ought to consolidate them into one deep but the fields are yellow with dandelions so I wonder if it wouldn't be best to just leave them alone and see if the spring flow causes them to draw out comb and spread out.
Hi Dave!! Love your videos! I'm a new beekeeper and have had my hive for 4 weeks now. I removed the feeder and added a honey super 3 days ago. But now they've started "washboarding". What does this mean? Are they hungry? Are they cleaning? Should I do anything? Thanks for all your amazing advice!!
My bees started drawing out the comb weird only on the black foundation boards..obviously they weren't waxed enough but it just makes a mess lol. I started with a package in early April and they have almost trippled in colony size! They are doing amazing! The brood pattern is almost prefect! My queen is a true queen lol! Thank you for your informative videos I learned alot watching you! Thank you thank you!
Installed my first two nucs last Friday morning. The first nuc was crammed full of bees. Couldn't smoke them down as they didn't have room to move down. So, should I have put a second deep on immediately? Yes, all 5 frames in the nuc were heavy. The second nuc had room (half to 2/3 the bees of #1). However, it is drinking the sugar water well over twice as fast.
Great video David , I like to wait a little longer , maybe 7 to 8 frames of bees before moving to the second deep. I have big problems with hive Beatles and too much room for the bees to guard. I like your hive lids also.
Yes, I have wonky comb! Also, have one (of two) hives that seems to be aggressive. They both are from same source. Purchased them last May...so new to this. They wintered well.
Last year my first for bee keeping. They made wonky (a real word I’m sure) comb. It was vertical and very sketchy here and there. I ended up re-queening. I guess they did not like her. LOL. Thank you for your help!!
I do have some wonky comb in my hive. It’s like they drew comb from one foundation all the way to the next foundation. Just a couple of inches wide, but almost the height of the frame.

I Matt it down to they will make it beautiful again
Me too
too over the top
You know life is really good when a new smoker makes your day! Great video Dave!
May I make a suggestion? I like to set my boxes on the outer cover instead of on the grass. 😊

Hey David!! So when considering adding a new Deep, and you say to add it when the 🐝 draw out 5 frames, do you mean on both sides of a single frame?

Can you do this when you already have a super on top?
Your queen is very good
Can you show us the Quinn bee. What she looks like 😊
Wonky comb, I didn’t put enough beeswax on before using. When I did they made nice comb
shameless self promotion of the button............i love it!
after all, if u dont promote you then who will?
Indeed John.
Do you always run two deeps? How do you know when to add a deep and when to add a honey super?
Yes, the video explained it, but when 5-7 frames are drawn out with bees and resources I add the next box. Not all my hives have 2 deeps but most.

WHAT CAUSES WONKY COMB?
Usually when frames are not waxed well enough or the gap between the frames is too large.
@@beek OK, THANKS. WOULD YOU SCRAPE OFF WONKY COMB, RE-WAX AND INSTALL?
Sell me some bee's I can't find any

Look at that smoker! LOOK AT IT!!
It's beautiful
Love your videos
I can barely keep up with my bees. Swarmed last weekend. Caught them and started hive#2. Bees swarmed again today. Caught them and started hive #3!
Just caught one of my swarms last week. They were NOT docile like everyone says they will be. Sooooo glad I didn't try and "save the bees" like bee lady with no gloves 😂
I never trust a swarm
Both my hives swarmed even with a second deep on both. Couldn’t catch either. I think I need to pull some of the Queen cells and make a third hive so they don’t swarm again.
2:25 Ok, I didn't know that. I knew that was why that disc was in the bottom but I didn't know to expand the legs. I'll try it next time!
Cool Robert, that will help your smoker sooooo much!!
Yes I had bees that drew out all kinds of wonky comb
Do you think wonky comb has anything to do with degree of the earth ? Compass heading
I really only use gloves if they have warned me a few times...Wasps hurt a lot more than bees... I find bee stings to be more itchy and annoying than actually painful... I was stung by yellow jackets a week or so before getting stung by bees in my hive.
How do I attract bees to my hive for the first time?
Expecting your reply.
The Ash out of the smoker rub on your hands it will help no hand lotions are perfume
Wow you are to hyper! Calm down. Keep up the good work.
Do you ship queens?
My wife saw a swarm fly over the mother in laws today. I guess I should see about putting a swarm trap out there.
Wow, happy mother's day! That's cool.
Enjoy your videos thanks for All the help 😊 so sad your B team6 is full. 😮
I think they may open it up briefly in the near future.

Okay, check back in a couple of days. It's a shipping thing. Once they get shipping caught up they'll put more online. Thank you for your interest!
Saw the queen at 6:18 on your video. She is bottom right from your POV. Nice looking too!
You showed me how to pull out supports in the bottom of my smoker and solved a problem that I didn't even know there was a fix for. Thank you.
Pretty cool!!
I get wonky comb often.
Usually when I checker board new frames in.
Hi David Can you re-post your link for Burlap? Thanks for the videos!!
Perfect timing. I will be adding a deep box on my new hive this weekend. Thanks for the timely instruction!
For me when I get stung I feel it for about a week, not a lot of pain but it's noticeable for awhile. 😅
It depends largely on where you are stung and exactly how the venom effects tissues.
Hive#2 has done some wonky comb in one week's time.
I feel it sometimes has to do with frames not being pushed together tightly, or not enough wax on the foundation or the hive not level and sometimes it just because Jupiter wasn't lined up with the moon just right 🤷🏻♂️

Yup, I should invent an anti-wonky comb spray.
Do you suppose the boxes off of Amazon would be comparable to something I could get locally

Yes, the best time of the year to get frames drawn out is during the first heavy nectar flow. After that, it's hit and miss.

I was always taught if you have bad hive beetles you put your hive in a place where it gets all day sun

So cool Sara. It's exciting!
