I grew up in Philadelphia, PA and this was probably the only country song I remember from my young years. This song was played on pop stations as crossover, maybe as a comic relief. I loved it then and still do. A CLASSIC!!!
I used to hear this as a young man, I'd hear it on my car radio & in a few days, I had it memorized... We had a Supervisor named L.D. Flowers , so we'd all sing, We ain't afraid of L D Flowers.... we'll eat our Lunch when we want to, Cause LD Flowers can't do Nuthin'. he needs US more than we need him...". I Never forgot it, Nor will I ever forget it.... Thanks Merle...
In Sri Lanka, I never heard of this singer, but when we were kids in the 70s Wolverton mountain by Nat King Cole was played by the Radio Ceylon. Loved it, Thanks for uploading, from the UA-cam we are discovering so many great singers.
Whenever I feel a bit down, this song changes my mood immediately. I love it, and I've watched it many times in different versions. Watching in 2024 South Africa.
Merle is a great entertainer. He is funny as well as a great singer and enteainers. I had the pleasure of seeing him in person once in Florida. RIP Merle.
I first heard the song in high school and the story behind it when I was stationed at Little Rock Air Force base from 66-70. My first wife was from Morrilton, AR and one day she and her folks took me on a drive around the county and they pointed out Wolverton Mountain. Oddly enough, after we divorced, I ended up having a long term relationship with a woman from Center Ridge, AR who went to school with Clifton's daughter!
Well sometimes we just think that the songs were just written , isn't it great to know there was a Mr. Clowers and so happy to hear the story as I too (like so many others ) have been listening to this since the 60's. Thank-you.
Here is one of the "greatest generation" people who made this country great. This is a picture of Clifton Clowers plowing his field at the age of 100. Clowers was the subject of a Merle Kilgore hit song called "Wolverton Mountain." Mr. Clowers lived to be 102 (1891 - 1994) where he actually lived and farmed that land on Wolverton Mountain. A solid American who was just who he was, although he rubbed shoulders with a lot of famous people after the song was written about him. That's the kind of man I want to be! Just be me, warts and all, a responsible human being plowing my own field. These were the men who made America great, we need a lot more of them today; and a lot fewer of those "give-me," "entitled" "hand-out" people in this country. Hey, plow your own field. That's what Clifton Clowers did.
I met Merle in June 1991 in Atlanta at a Hank jr concert & he’s just like what you see in this video. Great sense of humor & we talked about a movie he was in(living proof) his favorite line in that movie he said was where he referred to himself as hotwire Kilgore I told him my favorite line in the movie was when Naomi Judd walked by he said now that is something
Clifton was my distant uncle as well. I was 2 almost 3 when he passed and I was never blessed to meet him. I always heard stories about him though & I will cherish those.
I was introduced to this song thru the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It's such a funny and odd tune and has quietly become a song that brings me comfort and puts a smile on my face lo these many tears. While I still like the Dirt Bands version the best, hearing this from the author was a special treat.
Yes I love the history too. I heard this song as a bit of jubalaya mix rock n roll type about 30 years ago n stuck in my head. Today hearing the full song. Thanks to UA-cam for bringing this world together. UA-cam is awesome
Well, I've been listening to this song on and off since it first came out about 1960. It's taken all this time for me to find out the story behind it. Very interesting.
The songs and the artists who recorded them had a lot more personality in those days. This is one of the songs I grew up listening to on top 40 radio in NY.
I loved this song and had no idea that Wolverton Mtn. was actually in Arkansas and I was born and raised here. It was after this song came out that I found out it actually existed and was right here in Arkansas.
Grew up listening to this song and seeing the mountain on my way to Conway Arkansas never knew the story behind the song i just thought the people who sung it picked a random name for the mountain and man so cool that it’s about a mountain and a man in my home state of Arkansas
Every night I play, I do this song. It's a great song. I love a good mountain song! People tell me all the time how much they love this song, here in Ireland. Check out Hank Williams Jnr's version of this song, it's outstanding.
I have always loved this song since I heard it for the first time way back in the 1960's. Brings back such nice memories. Now most of those I loved are gone and I'm left all alone
I had never known Merle Kilgore wrote this song. I never would thought about it being about a real person, lol. But that is why Merle was the star, lol.
you might think that wolverton mountain is just just a song... but it is not!!!! My daddy was the most loving person I have every know!!!!! he would not let any one near me unless they had the nerve to ask him for permission first ... well my first husband did just that. he was not a big man but he was all man.. he look at my daddy & said I love her I will always take care of her. please let me show how much I love her. wolverton became a legend...
Wow, love this story about the song being written. Incredibly, I first heard it sung by Granny (Irene Ryan) in the Beverly Hillbillies TV series in the 60s and totally captivated my imagination. So, what happened in real life, does boy get girl in spite of Clifton Clowers?
Probably not but Johnny Horton did a heckuva job on the mountain song "Old Slewfoot" which pretty much helped no buddy. (Hi, Miss Ryan. Seent yer ears a burnin')
A Woolverton from the Mountain checking in... My grampa was born on the Mountain. I knew Clifton, he was a short quiet old man, he died just shy of his 104th birthday (I think he died in Nov95).... Unfortunately, vandals burned his place down in the late 90s..
I loved this song ever since I was a kid. It's like the southern American version of a fairy tail, where knights try and rescue a princess and die in the process. I wonder if the guy singing the song makes it; or he ends up as one of the many rotting skeletons randomly spread across the mountain. Why is Clifton Clowers so possesive? Did he lose his wife? It's ironic in that no one has seen his daughter and lived to tell about. She obviously has no dental and sanitary care up on the mountain, and probably has an all meat diet and wears animal skins and a burlap sack. So, why does everyone think that she is such a beauty? They might be shocked to find out otherwise. She also has no education. Women must be scarce in that area.
I’ve loved this song since I was a child. So nice to hear it again.
This song has been covered many times which proves how great a story it is. Way to go Merle, it's one of my favorites.

My grandfather taught me to dance with this song.. still love it today..
I love it when songwriters talk about how they wrote their songs. This is a great story, and a great introduction to the song.
I love it when they just shut up and sing.
I love hearing the history gives everything context. Plus Merle is funny.
Thank you. This song reminds me of my mom. She loved this song. ❤

Merle was a treasure in country music and the best storyteller!
I first heard the song when I was in Junior high, and it has stuck with me ever since

Pure Country song, and performer. Many thanks..

Never knew the history behind this song but have always loved it from a very young age. Thank you.....
So great to hear the story behind a song. Enjoyed Merle's story very much. I had an uncle named Merle.
Glad he shared the history. Always wondered who Clifton Clowers was.
I read the Wikipedia page on him and found out he was born in the town I live in
I never knew any of that background story. How Cool. I listened to that song many times on my transistor radio as a 12 year old kid, hooked on music.
Every night I play, I do this song. It's a great song. I love a good mountain song! People tell me all the time how much they love this song, here in Ireland. Check out Hank Williams Jnr's version of this song, it's outstanding.

Just love this old song beautiful and amazing voice
Johnny Horton should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame!
Clifton Clowers is said to have had two daughters, Virginia & Burlene. If they ever married, their husbands should be given bravery awards.
A Classic!

WUNDESCHÖNE LIED --DANKE UND GRÜSSEN--
I wonder if that mountain is anything like Waltons Mountain 3:30 😅
A Woolverton from the Mountain checking in... My grampa was born on the Mountain.
I knew Clifton, he was a short quiet old man, he died just shy of his 104th birthday (I think he died in Nov95).... Unfortunately, vandals burned his place down in the late 90s..
What scrappy people would burn his place down. Just sorry!
It's funny how Merle's buddy Hank Williams jr. mentions Clifton Clowers in his song if the south had of won we'd of had it made

Ever heard Jerry Lee Lewis do this song, he gives it some credit also ! ! !
Somebody is always saying goodbye
Keep president elect grounded in bibical principals
just alittle confused as to dates on this song as hank williams sung it and he passed away in 1953.but still anice song and well sung
Hank Williams sr never sung this song. Considering it didn't come out until 10 years after his death. Hank Jr did the song though.
Mrgo Smith`s Face is so Beautiful...
Claude KIng had the hit ,with this gem
I want to know what happened to his real daughter - if there was one. The one the song is about.
