Beautiful! I remember seeing WWII warbirds landing on Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY many years ago for a special occasion (Memorial Day, I think). Now I don’t think they’re able to do that anymore. Sad. It was a sight to see (and the sounds were awesome as well). Thanks for sharing! 👍🏼
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, right?
Yes, but buttering the landing is preferable
Any landing you can walk away from is a decent landing.
Any landing you can fly the plane away from is a good landing.
Only machine that does *great landings* is, or rather was, the Space Shuttle. Because every landing was a one-time deal for them. And they *never* screwed it up.
Anyone here besides me who has ground looped a tail dragger.🥴
There are those who have and those who are gonna.
That landing strip is dangerous as all hell..
it is
It's a grass field. Nothing dangerous about it. These things were all designed to fly from grass.
@@PDZ1122 it's not so much the grass as the hill...
Great compilation of Landings..Must be difficult landing on Grass..
+Steve Lewis Video Channel. Thanks Steve
Grass is easier then asphalt. Much more forgiving.
Hahnwaide airport is not for begginer warbird pilot I guess
Grass is way easier, especially with a tailwheel aircraft.
Steve Lewis Video Channel. Grass is easier. It’s the downhill bit that makes it hard
1st. Mustang P51 shows a perfect landing Spitfire toooooo much speed !!!
0:33 me trying to land a tail dragged in XPlane be like:
Interesting to watch how almost every landing except for a T6 was a wheel landing. They are fine when you have lots of runway but if you look at WWII video pilots often did 3 pointers. I guess the wheel landing is an insurance policy against a stall on short final but really doesn’t reflect the old days.
I also feel that the T6 landing was the best. Speed reduced to a minimum giving a nice three point attitide and landing.
Just Like all the Arfix models I made. 😎👍
Approach speeds are to fast. A P51 is just a big Cennsa 180 to fly. retired CPL
Station Manager Certified Public Accountant?
Landing downhill, gets a little wierd it seems
Yes
Some really bad landings between them as well as some on three wheels as we say in aviation jargon. It can be seen that the pilots are not used to landing on grassy terrain and bounce like goats
Красиво!!!
ma unné iccaso di mettelli in un museo, sti trabiccoli? vaia vaìaaa...
Horrible landing field. I can't believe they risk their aircraft by landing downhill on a field full of bumps and holes like that. I would have flown to an alterned field an flew home the next day. Not worth the risk.
ach neeee sind dort auch DEUTSCHE Fluzeuge gelandet ???????????????????????????
Of all the planes that I seen land Spitfire is the worst I have flown a Spitfire and a 109 in the 109 is easier to land just saying
Typical grass runway, sloped, bumpy, and trees or other distractions close to the edges. The pilot of the P-40N did a great job of making the airplane do exactly what he wanted it to do.
thanks watching and commenting mate
That Mustang at 0:38 landed outside of the runway. Hit a bump prematurely, almost hit a fence and missed multiple runway edge markings by a narrow margin. No way they saw in front where they where going once they touched down. This was almost a crash. As I see now you wrote in descriptions. This must be a high elevation airport as the approach speeds are so fast and no floating. Not a good place for landing those warbirds.
That was scary, even more so than the bouncy Spitfire.
It isn't a very high elevation airfield. It's just about 350m above sea level, about 1150ft. I know that because I fly there myself (gliders at the moment). ;)
"Poor" spitfire! From the first second I saw it, I was fearing for a high speed landing.
Yessssss
Trying to wheel land At cruise speed can cause problems
A strip designed to kill warbirds.
Notice how the P-40 quickly retracted flaps for a no bounce landing. Thats how ya do it.then when you have to hold the tail down for aerodynamic breaking you won't get airborne again and bounce. Though P-40's like wheel landings instead of 3 pointers. Also come in just a tad slower like that last mustang but maybe those pilots hadn't landed there before. Places that have lots of hills before the runway can give off up & down drafts that make landing just a bit tricky.
The tricycles are like no problem.
0:33 sketchy
Nearly hit the fence! {:-O
0:17 terrible landing by spitfire
Great planes. Is it just me or do some of those landings seem to be awkwardly between wheel and full stall landings ?
Crappy runway.
Called a tail low wheel landing...It is a way of retaining some visibility while getting a little slower. It takes very delicate elevator control. Hard to do on an uneven surface like this.
Right on the golf course. No German planes.
Those were some bouncy/hard landings
Yes
the most landings was made at way to high speed, and the runway profile, in descent at debut, did not help to land clean...
@@leneanderthalien You've clearly never flown a tailwheel airplane much less a warbird on uneven grass...
Spitfire!!!!🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Nice to watch thanks for posting. All those bumps in the grass make a plane bounce on landing. Plus it looked a little like a down hill runway, if so those can be a pain. Add in the hilly terrain plus trees forcing a steep approach and you have all you need for really difficult landings in a warbird.
Three point landing in a tail dragger? Definitely a lost art.
0:42 did he land on the taxiway??
He landed next to the runway! After bouncing off of the road and almost taking the fence with him. HAHA!
Lol yes he did
Hey they look just like my tail wheel landings! Sketchy 😂
Some of them appear to be going extremely fast on final (I don't know if theres a different term for military landings)
The spitfire especially. I had a feeling he was going to be bouncing more than just once with the speed he had
Anyways cool video indeed 👍 thx for the upload
I think the stall speed on a mustang is 100 mph looked like the runway wasn't that flat.
This is why veterans were made to do 3 point landing that also helped avoid nose overs in the field. Though that strip looks really crappy.
true ! thanks watching mate
No armament or old radio equipment so running at low wing loadings is making them float a bit ..
man the guy in the spit fire is really bad ironic the navy pilot is doing the best landings
the guy at 2:25 is the only one knowing how to land by retracting flaps as soon as he can
A dry grass runway is ABSOLUTELY the easiest runway to land a tail wheel airplane on!! Grass is SO MUCH MORE forgiving than a concrete or asphalt runway, ESPECIALY in a "heavy taildragger" like a Warbird, and I DO know this from personal experience!! (Before he passed Adolf Galland...yes THE Adolf Galland...told a friend of mine that owned a HA-1112 that he though my friend was crazy for flying that airplane in and out of ANYTHING other than a grass runway!) I can't imagine what these guys were getting spooked about!
Great to see all those Allies planes landing just there, in Germany.
I wonder how a Lancaster bomber would put down on a strip like that if it had to ? Nice vid
Thanks watching. We hat a B25 on this strip in 2009
Lancasters never took off or landed on grass strips in WW2. At least not intentionally,.
The RAF at the minimum lined the runways with Sommerfeld Tracking aka Tin Lino, which was a prefab, lightweight steel wire mesh. Major RAF station runways were levelled a lot better then this especially for the big Bombers. No grass could grow as the runways were used very intensively during the war..
Post WW2 it all got upgraded to concrete/tarmac real quick for the Jet age.
Such a beautiful venue for a warbird gathering, but that uneven landing surface is terribly unforgiving, so unwary pilots beware!
Brilliant no rut jumpers there
German soil rejects British airplanes landing on it.
Bad surface, lovely machines.
That second mustang bounced off the road.
Make up your mind boys. Either wheel em' on or stall em' in! Half way between makes for a crappy landing.
That Trike undercarriage does it consistently best of all, solid, smooth landing every time, even though it looks most uncomfortable in the approach.
2:03 That's my baby. Pure American, there from beginning to end. In every theater, P-40!
Powered by a british merlin engine
@@kevinthomas2662 Not At All
Pure Allison V-1710
And your Merlin is a good design but wasn't able to negative G until America fuel injected it.
@@u2mister17 pure bullshit, the merlin was brilliant in both the Hurricane and Spitfire
@@kevinthomas2662 It was carbureted originally.
And you commented on My Baby being British in some way?
The P-40 never got the newly designed AMERICAN 2-stage Supercharger because they were in short supply for all the newer model aircrafts being produced.
@@u2mister17 Do your reseaech you clown
What's the story on the T-6 with the three bladed prop? I'd imagine that strip would be pretty tricky with the elevations changes in it!
German announcer translates “I know you guys wish I’d shut up so you can hear the planes, and I will, it’s just that I dig my voice and how often do you get a P.A. system to play with?

RC planes are awesome !!!
Grandpa left the chat
“How To Destroy A P-51 For Dummies” at 0:30. That guy should have his plane taken away.
This is a challenging strip with obstacles slopes and trail draggers are not easy to land. He did a good job of putting the plane down without crashing it. And you a non pilot shouldn’t be quick to judge...
Wouah magnifique ! Merci d'exister! Le bonjour d'Alsace
Merci
We couldn't have found somewhere flat to build a runway?
Ah boring
Sloping runway...tricky
Didn't finish. Ads.
Thanks supporting our work Paul
😃👍👍👍👍👍
Harrison Ford was there too?
Hit straight roll straight....
P51 hit the road??
I hope they noticed the Czech markings on the Spitfire.
Yes its Parked there
💖
That "aha" moment when you realize all that is needed is a "displaced threshold" for landing... (proper airspeed control to an intended 3 point landing would also help. Instead of salvaging a botched wheelie with a 3 pointer)
True
Un gran revival ,ma quando sarà la prossima edizione 🐼
The armchair pilot in me has gone off to find another airfield.Much Respect to all those pilots!
thanks watching and liking
Hello, Two-point landing is easier and safer than three- points landing ? Can you explain it ?
Arkadiusz Kocjan It’s easier because it takes less skill . The transition period that the tail looses authority because the wings and the fuselage block air flow over the control surface is a dangerous time . WW 2 instructors were adamant about 3 point so the tail wheel immediately steers the aircraft , in fact Stearman wanted that tail to touch a microsecond before the mains . Basically stalling the aircraft about a foot over the runway. I do this about 8 times a week on average in a Stearman. Put the trim in the 10:00 position and hold over the runway at 3 foot then just wait for the plane to settle down with no more energy to fly . 😅
@@larrygreen8912 thx
I could do both in my J4 Cub but preferred wheel landings and added power to carry the tail and get where I wanted to go a little quicker. I also much preferred grass. It seemed smoother and easier on the tires.
Spartan & Texan 💯👍🆗️✅
ist und bleibt ein Acker...
'Home Turf' given a very literal meaning.
The guy that landed at 2:50 is the only one that landed like he wasn’t strafing the enemy . Most of those guys were way to fast on landing.
Landing downhill and you not knowing wind direction and speed....thanks for the tip. 1500 HP high performance and VERY Precious,
I'll take a "little" extra speed.
So by 'spectacular landings' you mean 'landings'.

That's a shite runway
