The Brevity of Life and How It Can Move You | John Fetterman | TEDxUniversityofPittsburgh

  • John Fetterman discusses the obstacles that he faced in his life and how that changed his perspective. He examines how recognizing his mortality changed who he was, what he believed, and what he fought for.
    John Fetterman has served as mayor of Braddock for more than 10 years. After winning by a single vote, John threw out the traditional political playbook and worked to break the cycles of poverty and violence that were decimating Braddock by embracing creative ideas solutions. From a new community center to urban gardens and new businesses, Mayor John is charting a new path for Braddock. John grew up in York County and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance from Albright College. He also holds an MBA from the University of Connecticut and a master’s in public policy from Harvard. While living in CT, John joined Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Confronted by the stark disparity between his own life and that of his ‘little’, John quit his position in risk management and joined AmeriCorps. In 2001, John started a GED program in the town of Braddock, one of the poorest and most troubled communities in the commonwealth. He was elected mayor of Braddock in 2005 and is now in his third term.

Any of the youtube vids seem to restore my faith equally well. It is such a salve to listen to an honest, passionate and plain spoken man committed to what is good and decent. I have the utmost respect for John's desire to help people. Unfortunately, as the mayor of a city from 2006 to 2019, the population has not grown, and income has increased but is still far below the national average at only $25,000 per household. You read that right, per household. I like nice guys with big hearts, but they don't always make good leaders. Ask yourself, as a mayor he didn't do much for his town and he's at the top of the political pyramid in his town, as a Senator you really feel he'll do better?

    • @Arturo-sm1tb
      @Arturo-sm1tb Рік тому +4

      Yes, he had an impossible task as Mayor, and did the best any human being could do. Braddock was not going to turn around in 13 years. He did much better than anyone else could have done. He IS and will be a leader in the Senate. Good man, good human being. We need more John Fetterman and less Ted Cruz.

    • @franklinbadge1215
      @franklinbadge1215 Рік тому

      For one, how do you measure "better" between a mayor and a senator? They have drastically different jobs. One actually governs over a city, and one mainly just votes on policy. Second, yes, because the policies he supports are held my many americans but have very little representation in the senate.

A lot of the people to be released are there for marijuana charges & aren’t there for a violent crime. Marijuana is becoming legalized so much these days. FACTS!!! Don’t spread false information!
