I owned a ‘98 Z-28 (non SS) with just bolt ons and a 6spd. Best import race was a Eclipse GST and I won by a long shot. No disrespect to the eclipse either. I loved those cars. Also, regularly raced a 98 Cobra owned by a “rival” many times and won every time. Car full or empty
Same here, but we had mostly late 80's/early 90's cars. I had a v8 Firebird, friend had a v8 Camaro, and this guy and his brother both owned mustangs, one a cobra and the other a GT. Fun to cruise around back when traffic wasn't so bad lol
Back in the day, someone i knew someone that had a brand new 1990, white mustang GT with a five speed. I was 17 and about five years younger than him. @@cedricmiller4370 No you wouldn't lol. My cousin owned a 2001 SS, and they were pure junk from a quality perspective. Cheap speed. The Mustang may not have been quite as fast in a straight line, but it was overall a much higher quality vehicle.

But you say your cousin had bad experience with his 2001 Camaro I'm shocked because I've always heard the LS motor was reliable but I agree with you on mustang being well built they last a long time I used to like the 1997 mustang GT stick shifts
Driver's game really. Smoke a later ws6 trans-am in my brother's shitbox '98 mustang gt with mufflers and a k&n. "Testing" vs. real-world are very different things. And camaros have been garbage since the early 70s. Sales testify to that.
I'm a Ford guy too, but I bet I could beat it with that Chevy if I had a few practice launches. I'd give the Chevy a good honest shot if I were driving it, too.

Hell man, I absolutely embarrassed that 98gt with my wife's bmw540i, I could barely find the headlights in my mirror by 100 lol. Shamefully slow, I wouldn't race a Honda in one.
This isn't today versus yesterday necessarily. This is Motorweek vs Motor Trend. Motorweek has always been geared towards the more educated and intelligent crowd.
@@mediocreman2 I wouldn't say it's anything to do with being intelligent or educated at all. Motortrend today is trying to somewhat match Top Gear's "lore" approach to car reviews whereas Motorweek was trying to be like a video brochure of the car with a little bit of subjective opinion for things they really like or didn't like about a car. Looking back, it almost didn't make sense as it was shown arbitrarily on broadcast TV and the odds of a casual car buyer seeing an episode featuring the car they were thinking about was very unlikely. It was really only beneficial to people too young to drive but just wanted to dream about what car they might get (that's who I was) or for car salesmen to do research on the competition. Compare that to today where they would've been a great resource to quickly compare competing cars to make a buying decision, but now there's a zillion youtubers effectively making the same kind of videos, but perhaps not with the same level of consistency and fact listing.
@@nunyabusiness896no your argument makes no sense you just said Motorweek is more like a brochure that means it’s more educational, Motortrend is more entertainment
Except for this time they should. I’m a Chevy guy but will admit I would never buy the current gem Camaro. It’s so ugly. The mustang is just better. However the zl1 is still badass, cause it has the old gen front end
They should cancel it, the Camaro has lost its way. I had a 98 Z28 but I wouldn't even consider getting a new Camaro. They're ugly, heavy, expensive, and slower than mustangs. No selling points any more
Please do...what a douchebag disaster. The Camaro was always my favorite car, and in 2004 when I first saw the relaunch design...omg..I was gonna be the first to own an SS. Life got in the way, and thank God...what a shit show this car has turned out to be...cancel it forever; it's disrespectful to its own heritage at this point.
I just want them to fix it. Make it look good and allow good sightlines from inside. Keep the V-8 and manual transmission. That's all I ask. It's not that much heavier than an LS1 Camaro. But yeah, my next Camaro is 95% likely a late 4th gen.
As much as i do love the power output of an American V8, you cannot compare it to a Japanese inline 4. V8 is is for hobby. Just doomsday machines. They sound nice as hell when they happen to work. And that always requires an engine rebuild. Bent push rods, worn cam, timing chain, etc. And then drive the toyota corolla to go get the parts.
@@cheldosarmiento2733 Yeah fucking right I am so sure. If they had someone that could get the Camaro out of then hole the Camaro would smoke that supped escort.
I still prefer that 1998 SVT Cobra. I love that car so much. I also think the SS is a bad ass car. I would still take a WS6 Trans-Am over either (6-speed manual). They still look mean, especially in black.
When I was 18 I wanted either of these cars so bad, but was in no place to afford one. No that I'm a little older and have a little more money, I have a nice reliable truck, but every time I see one of these on the road I get a little nostalgic. Both of those cars had so much HP for that time, crazy to think my wife's Pilot has 285. Also crazy to think about the evolution of both Ford and Chevy motors; the incredibly reliable old-school push rod LS and the very technically advanced DOCH Coyote. Still so awesome.
Just because that pilot has 285 hp don't mean it's anywhere near as fast as these. Don't mistake similar hp for similar performance. People make this mistake often when comparing cars from yesterday with more modern usually much more heavy newer stuff.
Great video. I've driven both cars and owned 3 ls1 camaro's. The ls1 camaro ran low to mid 13's all day long. I got 13.3 with cat back aftermarket exhaust from my 1998 coupe.
@midnight347 they were typically from my experience a touch slower then the z28 and ss camaros. 13.7 was about the best cobra I recall running in stock form. Then we all know what for did in 03 with the cobra😳
You get 3x the car tho. You can still get a Camaro and Mustang for under 30k now. And those cars have almost the same power, better interior, suspension, and safety features than these.
When the camaro and Mustang came out in the 60s, no one thought that either one of them would cost $40,000 someday. $40k back then could buy both of the most expensive mustangs and camaros and still have enough money for a house or 2, plus enough to live off of for a year.
Mustang Vs. Camaro is the best rivalry in car history. I’m a die-hard Mustang guy, but I love the Camaro because it brings competition to the Mustang, and the competition makes each of them better. They both have strong personalities, strong engines, and strong history.
@@slowstang88 with factory street cars, a 10th is almost nothing. Also, when you spun the tires for quite a long time when they other guy had traction and only lost by a 10th. Pretty much means you would have won if you hooked up from the start.
@@slowstang88 Well the first time didn't get through your head. Re-watch the video. They say had the 60mph mark, the mustang was there at 5.4s and camaro was at 5.7s. (due to spinning tires). I wouldn't trust motor week's 0-60 times either. In a lot of their videos, you see their test drivers spinning the rear wheels for a good 4 seconds off the line.

There's a MotowWeek review somewhere around here that shows a 3rd-gen Camaro (idk if 4bbl or TPI) outracing a whole-ass USDM 928 with far more power. Chevy probably made the right move switching to the Australian multilink in the end, but the 3rd and 4th gen Camaros show that they were likewise masters of the live axle setup
SS. SS. SS. I was 15 when these came out. No way I'd ever get them as a first car lol...But I sure did gawk at them in the magazines of the day. I was more into the Ford then, but the Camaro usually always came out on top in comparos. Today, I'd go with the SS. There's not a wrong choice here. About 2001, I got a 95 Prelude SE, and that car stickered for the same or more than these cars lol. Prelude was fantastic. Well built, I still own one to this day even, a 94 with 265k going strong. But the amount of performance from these domestic bruisers for the money was insane!! Cheers!
Yeah good luck working on that Ford DOHC or adding performance parts. Have two friends that own it and they hate working on it. I have to admit though Mustang sounds nice.
Michael tucker this shit is biased as hell. The guy in the z28 roasted the tires and never attempted to regain traction. My 14.2 second 89 formula firebird with a free modded tpi305 killed sn95 GTs twice a week for years at Darlington dragway. Most of the sn95 GTs mustang ran high 14s and low 15s. My 02 ws6 6 speed was box stock and in mint condition when I got it with 33k miles on it in 2012. My first day at the track I was running 12.8s with a 2.0 60'. It killed stock 04 cobras as I got used to launching it. That z28 ls1 should have walked that shitstain the entire 1/4. I've never seen anyone but a complete newb run a high 13 with ls1 auto f-body. Those are decent driver in an LT1 times. The mustangs were very overrated on paper for their power numbers just to try to match up with the ls1 cars. The LS1 was very underrated considering most of the 6 speed cars would put down more power at the rear wheels than the engine was advertised to produce at the flywheel . Even a lot of stock autos put down 330ish rwhp when the flywheel numbers were suppose to be 325hp. This shit is a joke. The only mustang that could keep up with ls1 f-bodies was the 04 cobra and it took 8psi from a supercharger to do it. That's around a 50% increase over what that engine would have made naturally aspirated. Old lightly modified ls1 f-bodies are still beating the new 5.0s. At least those races are actually close. I have to call total bullshit on this videos drag race.
Boogey man If he thinks those push rod hunk of shit ls motors are on parr with a coyote 5.0 or a termi motor he is smoking crack. Can a ls1, ls2 or ls3 handle 1000 hp??? Fuck no but the gen 2 and 3 coyote can handle over 1000 hp and the termi motor which is forged from the factory can handle around 900hp with a good tune. He can have fun making his push rod hunk of shit get anything over 700 without blowing the fuck up. Shit the ls3 cant even handle over 750hp. what a joke.
Archangel_4sixx There are plenty of LS3's pushing well over 750 HP with little to no mods. GM and Ford both make quality engines capable of big numbers.
Supra TT single or dual, depending on the size of the exhaust you can get the same flow rate. When the Camaro concept for 93 body style was at the track, it was out running the Corvette in the qmile. There was an article back then in I think road n track stating that gm didnt want the pony out running the horse so they kinked the air intake and went from dual to single exhaust. Dual is better no doubt, but you can get plenty of air flow from a single 3" exhaust.
They only did the single (wider) exhaust for 98 SS. I had that car. It was really fun because a lot of people thought it was a V6 dressed up to look like a SS. That is until you would light em up...and they could hear the exhaust and see you fly away. Back in the late 90's the SS was king. Fun times....I miss that car.
omar khan Yep, if you're wanting a badass Stang that's the one to get. They underrated the hp numbers. It was pushing out 390 but that was to the wheels. They were actually producing around 420 or more at the crank. Some people actually had higher ratings too!
The LS1 is a push rod motor, so it is a very small motor, allowing it to fit in smaller cars. They make a great amount of power and have a huge aftermarket for them. You can pick up one of these motors for cheap since there are so many of them around.
pontiacGXPfan, Matt Dirks is on the right track. The Chevy pushrod motors are small on the outside. I've seen a photo of a LS motor next to a 32v V8 from Lexus. The Lexus cylinder heads are huge, because they each have 2 cams in them. From the outside the Lexus V8 looked almost twice as big as the Chevy, even though its displacement was 4L vs. 7L, and its power was 300 vs. 500. A Ford 5.0L DOHC engine is slightly bigger, costs almost $7000 brand new, and there aren't many of them available for cheap in junkyards (yet). The Ford 4.6L DOHC engines are actually bigger still, and I hear the aftermarket for them is fading away as manufacturers and vendors shift to favor the 5.0.
Back in 1998 I bought an SS Camaro exactly like this one. I traded in my 95 Mustang GT for it. It was so innovative with that LS1 engine - I disliked the mustangs 4.6, and the new cobra body style was much more subdued than previous years. 320HP sounded huge back then - the Corvette was only about 345 if I remember correctly. The camaro handled and drove much better, and the T tops were cool...but the interior materials were not as nice as mustang. These prices are a bit misleading, as both cars typically MSRP'd around 30 or a little more. By the time you add T Tops and auto trans to that camaro, the price would be close to 30, mine was a little more than that. I wanted a firebird originally, but could not find one anywhere and production had halted for the year...then I ran across the red SS in the showroom and I was hooked. Put a 100k miles on it over 6 years before I sold it. The only trouble I had was the AC compressor died at 100,000 so I had to replace that....but nothing else.
I bought a brand new 98 Formula with Leather and T tops for $25K. It ran 14.1 with the auto and only 100 miles on the odo. I paid full retail as I was the first in my 70K people town to get 1. It had just came off the truck. Still fully wrapped. I know the SS was faster than the Mustang but MW never launches well on GM stuff.
The price for the Mustang was accurate. There were no options for them. The F bodies were priced higher and that got GM punched in the kidneys for sales because the cobra was 99% of the performance of the SS, at a 25% discount. The mustang is definitely a better driving car though. Better outward visibility, more comfortable ride, more predictable handling. The crappy tires hurt the stock performance. I can only imagine what a stock 98 would do around that road course with decent tires. Today's high performance all season tires have as much grip as near-competition level summer tires back then. The cobra was actually intended to go against the E36 M3, not the Camaro.
@@Johnny96riit has slightly better acceleration stock the 4v has 10x more potential modified. There been guys run in the 5s quarter mile at 256 mph or more with a 4.6 4v like this one still using stock style ported heads, stock block and stock crank. No ls1 or any ls period ever ran that fast with that many stock parts let alone with only 4.6 liters of displacement. The cobra is the better car all the way around it is slightly behind on acceleration stock for stock with 1.1 liters less displacement. It looks and sounds way better than the camaro. Cobra ftw.
The Camaro would have stomped that cobra if the dude wouldn't have burned the tires off lol seriously though these cars have a night and day difference. After riding in the Camaro, it would make the cobra feel like a Honda.
Casey Young that what all camaro guys say when they lose to a mustang "oh that guy just doesn't know how to drive" mustang is just an overall better car, engine is easy to work on, reliable and can make big power with a good set of heads and cam and tune. If ford made millions of 32v cobras I'm sure we would see a lot more people swapping 4.6l 32vs into their cars.
I miss the SN95 Mustangs, especially the earlier iteration of them...I feel like the current 6th gen Mustang is a continuation of this design and styling, whereas the 5th gen was a perfect throwback to the classic styling of the Mustangs of old that revived the muscle car market.
The 5th gen Mustangs are by far the best looking Mustang since 1973. They totally ruined it in 2015. The 6th gen is not as hideously ugly as the Foxbody, but nowhere near as good looking as the 5th gen. But car manufacturers tend to do that. They don't seem to know what they had. The 5th gen Camaro was a nice looking car. The 6th gen was a nightmare.
The camaro only trapped 2 mph more man. Trap speed stays pretty consistent and doesn't matter about the launch. Camaro is slightly faster but not by much.
It really doesn't matter which one y'all think is faster, they are close enough in speed that it will all come down to whose the better driver in a race. Just pick which one you think looks better imo
I'm getting old, that was the year I graduated High School! LOL I forgot how cheap those cars were back then, for some reason I thought they were already in the 30's.

The ground clearance is insane by today's standards. Those things look like they could go rock climbing! And the wheel gap...I could fit my head between the tire and fender of the mustang.

Those were some good times. F**k I miss those days.
Having lived through that era and driven both, owned one, there was no real comparison. Hands down the F-Body was the one to own. They gifted the acceleration to the pony for "balance" and had to grab a cobra to make it even appear reputable.
Had 96 and 98 cobra pretty much same car and had unmarked caprice with vette motor for work. I like the revving of the cobra much more. with 98 cobra I ran 13.30s 104 at Mason Dixon Drag way in Hagerstown MD with motorsport 4.10 gears, Nitto Drag radials, light weight drive shaft, safety loop for drive shaft for strip, pro 5.0 shifter. Because of high revving car lower gears actually increased top end to 162mph.
I knew a guy who ran 13.0 in a 98 Cobra,Stock. He was a real clutch master. My 99 Cobra ran 13.6 with a 2k launch cuz the halfshafts in the IRS always snapped so I had to baby it off the line.

The camaro with the LS1 is almost 50/50 balanced. Mustang is like almost 60/40 (even worst for the 03-04 cobra). If you ever drove both than you know. The camaro might not be the best looking camaro but it drives SOOO nice.
The cobra is better in every way other than stock vs stock acceleration where it's very slightly behind...it looks and sounds 10000x better. It drives better and rides better has a better interior by miles.
I had an SS camaro and no stock cobra could ever beat my car in a drag race. That driver couldn’t drive that car. 13.1 1/4 mile times were no problem not 13.8 like they were saying.

I’m sorry but the Z28/SS could run a 13.5-13.6 1/4 mile @108mph and 5.1-5.2 0-60, watching this video I noticed they were basically doing a burnout when launching the Camaro, I’m sure they ran it several times with possibly different drivers but they never could match other tests of the day from C&D, MT, R&T, etc.
I'm glad so they could come in 2nd to Mustangs for a while before they discontinue the camaro again. It's been great beating camaros consistently for decades
the trans am was really a corvette with a different badge and gm didn't want people to know that, it put out more horsepower than the camaro, and was better looking of course.
Cameron Patterson That’s ridiculous but it was better looking. It’s been the same car since 83 since GM wouldn’t allow Pontiac engines in the bird (or any car)
Had a 94 LT1, in case you couldnt tell by the screen name, book on a tune up was 8 hours. spark plugs you had to get 5 from the top and 3 from underneath and you had to have a swivel joint to get to most of them. When I did the only tune up she had 2 different sets of plugs. guess which ones were still OEM? LOL. She ran much better after having 8 matched plugs that were actually tight so there was no blow by. Changing out the distro cap was a joy as well. Required you to remove the water pump. I do miss that car though.
There were at least a few design reasons for the engine placement. In addition to weight distribution, it also allowed for the front end to have an aggressive nose that met with the aggressively swept windshield. I suspect that it also had something to with "safety-cage" construction; in a head-on collision, the motor would submerge under the passenger compartment.
The lower and farther back you get the engine in a chassis improves handling, weight distribution, and 60ft times! Read some old super stock drag racing books from the 1960s. Wealth of information that is still applicable today!
Back in 2004 when the cobra and the SS were common I used to own a 2004 Mustang GT six speed manual. My car's only mod was a Borla Stingers catback. I outpaced a 1998 Trans Am, took on a 2004 Mach 1 and stay ahead within a bumper and I also beat a 1998 Cobra but barely. All the races were pretty closed and I think the main difference was that I was a hell of a driver. I retired my 2004 GT when I sold it to my brother and bought a 2011 Mustang GT which is just a totally different beast of a car. Not once did I cared for the late 90s early 2000s Camaros. Growing up in this era and in a small Tennessee town, everybody had one of these two cars or a truck..You weren't cool without one of those three..Back when we still rode around town on the weekends.
I remember clearly out here in central tx, when those Ls1's hit the street the camaro and trans am were running low 13 quarters and one of my friends had a basic z/28 hard top no power windows, cloth seats and it was a stock freak, ran 12.9 with drag radials. Fastest stock cobra I saw was a 1998 and it ran mid 13s. I had a bad ass fox back then, and man I had such respect for those ls cars. I always wanted to buy one, trans am firehawk black on black yes please. Wish I kept my fox.
456 gear and drag radials could get the cobra to real low 13 possibly high 12 in good air. It is unreal what a change from 3.27 to 4.56 does for those 4v cars back in those days. I would do 4.30-456 if na and if supercharged I'd still do 4.10. Them cars need gears badly.

Did y'all ever race them against each other for fun? If so, what was the outcome?
Love these. I was very heavily into the Mustang scene in the late 90's. Brings back a lot of good memories.

Its amazing how different car reviews are today. This is so serious compared to what motortrend does now
This isn't today versus yesterday necessarily.
People were much more grown up back then. It was a world of silent generation, boomers and gen X.
And here we are again in 2019, where GM is thinking of cancelling the Camaro once again.
If the Camaro goes away, trailer parks dwellers nation wide will devastated...🙄
I just want them to fix it. Make it look good and allow good sightlines from inside. Keep the V-8 and manual transmission. That's all I ask. It's not that much heavier than an LS1 Camaro.
But yeah, my next Camaro is 95% likely a late 4th gen.
I absolutely love this generation Camaro. Soooooooo much fun to drive, stick of course.

The WS6 cars are also much more expensive than an SS. I'd buy the SS and work from there with the 10 grand I saved.

As much as i do love the power output of an American V8, you cannot compare it to a Japanese inline 4. V8 is is for hobby. Just doomsday machines. They sound nice as hell when they happen to work.
That pilot would never keep up but I see what u mean w the horsepower, today's mustang gts are at almost 500HP now, thats just insane
Great video. I've driven both cars and owned 3 ls1 camaro's. The ls1 camaro ran low to mid 13's all day long. I got 13.3 with cat back aftermarket exhaust from my 1998 coupe.
These cobras could run mid 13 too.

Sad to see the prices of cars today. No one ever thought there would be a $100,000 Corvette in 2020.

Why does that Cam SS have single exhaust it's supposed to have dual mine 99 had dual from factory
Supra TT you had to have the dual dual option. Yes some came single. They all have y pipe exhaust factory.
Aaron Kark no theyhad a center exhaust slp SS never single pipe, and it was available up to 2002

why do people keep using the LS1 for engine swaps?
pontiacGXPfan cheap, reliable, pretty easy to work on, make good power
The LS1 is a push rod motor, so it is a very small motor, allowing it to fit in smaller cars. They make a great amount of power and have a huge aftermarket for them. You can pick up one of these motors for cheap since there are so many of them around.
They fit in anything and out of the box 350hp and 350tq so one thing about the ls1 is when you keep modding then the torque keeps climbing
It's only because they're cheap.
pontiacGXPfan, Matt Dirks is on the right track.
I had a 98 Mustang GT a few years ago, same color. It was a lot of fun!
@@Milehighsnake98 The F-body is the better performer. The Mustang is the better CAR,
@@Johnny96riit has slightly better acceleration stock the 4v has 10x more potential modified. Cobra ftw.

MotorWeek Retro reviews RULE
Both are good dailys both are still clean as hell to this day
Waiting on the stang to spin out and take out a few on lookers lol 😂
Lol
Hahaha as a mustang owner I’ve never killed any onlookers......yet
It's a numbers game really. Camaros have done it too, they just didn't sell enough for the percentages to match up...
The Camaro would have stomped that cobra if the dude wouldn't have burned the tires off lol seriously though these cars have a night and day difference. After riding in the Camaro, it would make the cobra feel like a Honda.
Austin Trammell your dreaming lol I actually owned both. The cobra was way faster in a 1/4 mile.
Umm fuck no. The cobra is not faster, that fucker in the Camaro couldn’t drive for shit. The LS makes way more power.
Casey Young power doesn't equal faster car. If your not putting the power the the ground then you aren't going fast at all
aMcSpank the LS motors were way underrated. For more than the 4.6.. that Camaro likely makes 50 more whp. That fucker didn’t know how to drive
What?
I felt the s550 was like a modern sn95 when they first came out and I still feel like that today. I prefer 15-17 it reminds me most of the sn95s.
The Camaro would win the 1/4 mile if the driver didn't burn the tires off
They just wanted a big point to give mustang buyers even though everyone knows the camaro driver cant launch
My grandma could do better
The camaro only trapped 2 mph more man. Trap speed stays pretty consistent and doesn't matter about the launch. Camaro is slightly faster but not by much.

I'm getting old, that was the year I graduated High School! LOL I forgot how cheap those cars were back then, for some reason I thought they were already in the 30's.
Acc0rd79 with dealer mark up, they probably were north of 30k
Yeah. They're affordable even if you count for inflation. $25k in 1998 is around $36k today. The 2017 ZL1s and GT350s are double that price.
cadsux you can a new v8 Camaro or mustang for around 32-36 today
Yes, I know. I own a 2015 Mustang GT Premium. You can get better performance than that '98 Z28 and Cobra at today's prices, but for that super status badging, you pay double now.
It sucks that even back then the top dog Camaro or mustang was still relatively affordable. Now you better be making damn good money to afford one.
Mustang Cobra all day everyday!
The camaro is a better car for this generation in every way
Hunter M all the people that git rapped up in the ford and chevy clashes is pretty mindless and pretty much followers when choosing brands of vehicles! Neither one is better than the other one because I was a manager at ford motor company for 20 yrs and the ceo's and the owners plus designers of both companies and talk on wats gonna b hot for wat yrs and then they play the this is better game to up sales! All the chevy fan's is the dumbest out the group of this game tho! If u had any history lesson, u would know that chevy bought rights from ford to make the chevy vehicles and so did dodge and the whole GM family! When I hear some of the dumb ass people say!!!!! I can on chevy but not dodge or ford, the 1st thing come to mind is u can't work on shit then! It's not a major difference on either one and all have a shit load of similarities unless somethin out the group is a odd and one of a kind set up! Bottom line!!! If u like chevy, dodge or any domestic vehicles, u luv ford ford their mass production in starting the game in the U.S. cause everyone else wit mass production followed in ford foot steps dumb ass sleeping people!!!!!

I'd pick the Z28 Camaro.
About $25K for a Z/28 in 1998.. fast forward to 2014 and '15.. they're $75k... ouch. lol.
If you are looking for a '98 car, these cars sell way lower that that...
The 5th gen z28 wasnt just a base v8 option like the 4th gens were. Its a track animal.
@@홍성우-o3r Hes referring to a new Camaro. A 2020 Z28 is almost 80K, but a 1998 Z28 was only 25K.

@@71sc502 Absolutely correct. The Z28s of the 4th generation are roughly the trim equivalent of 5th/6th generation SS.
Interestingly, the 4th generation SS was the top trim level and it only had a few differences from the Z28s, including +20hp, larger rims/tires, the hood scoop and the different rear spoiler.
Looking back....those were pretty nice cars
These were the best days- before all this electric bullsh*t. Being a Ford guy I'm totally for the Cobra but having been driven correctly that Camaro will definitely take the Cobra. Awesome throwback though- so glad to see these videos and relive the times.
The ground clearance is insane by today's standards. Those things look like they could go rock climbing! And the wheel gap...I could fit my head between the tire and fender of the mustang.
I had a 96 gt with 18" saleen rims and it definitely looked like I could rock climb with it
@@notsoseriouslen6374they have to be lowered especially with 18s. They need a 2 inch drop.
These were fun years for these cars. I had a 97 30th Anniversary Z28 and all my boys had Stangs. A 98 GT hard top, a 96 GT drop top and an 89 GT that could smoke us all in a quarter mile (it had some work done) but nobody could hang wit the Z when we went for top end on the highway.
Nice! I couldn't believe Ford only put a 3.27 final drive ratio in these, especially since it was only a 5 speed.
I knew a guy who ran 13.0 in a 98 Cobra,Stock. He was a real clutch master. My 99 Cobra ran 13.6 with a 2k launch cuz the halfshafts in the IRS always snapped so I had to baby it off the line.
Some LS1 Camaros got into 12.9 even 12.89 or so on a tire
@@JNAMOTORSPORTSthere were stock Mach 1 that went 12.9 also on a tire. Mm&ff Evan smith went 13.1 at 105 in a bone stock mach. These cars ran killer for 4.6 liters the camaro is up 1.1 liters and I think it had slightly higher compression too.
My favorite review from Motorweek. Of all time.
I remember watching this on cable at my buddy Tony’s house lol.
did anyone else notice that during the track portion of the test, the Camaro only had one exhaust pipe? Didn't the 1998 Camaro SS have dual exhaust? Was it a V6 that they tested?
Some only had a single 3" pipe.
Those cars also don't have true duals. It's one into two on the dual exhaust models. That came in 99 I believe.
It’s funny how “sleek modern design” turned into “ugly cheap weed machine” 2 decades later
The camaros pretty nice still they hang with new muscle cars with very little modding and are very aero dynamic
That huge footprint of the Chevy was ahead of its time.
It was not long after this that sports cars and super cars got huge.
Looks like they only ran once in the drag, and he spun through 1st in the ss. I think they were just being lazy this episode.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Stay on your little cloud sucking on lolipops while riding your unicorn. 😂😂😂😂
I had an SS camaro and no stock cobra could ever beat my car in a drag race. That driver couldn’t drive that car. 13.1 1/4 mile times were no problem not 13.8 like they were saying.
I have the Z28 M6 variety and ran 13.1 @ 108 bone stock. I never saw the mustangs win back in the day stock to stock unless some major driver error was at play. 🍻
I'm just really glad that Chevy made the smart decision to bring it back.
I'm glad so they could come in 2nd to Mustangs for a while before they discontinue the camaro again. It's been great beating camaros consistently for decades
2 very cool cars. I didn't own neither of them, but they dominated the car scene for a while.
I love the way in the description it says 'why dont we all just drive trans ams?'... do they forget the trans am is the camaro with a different badge?
the trans am was really a corvette with a different badge and gm didn't want people to know that, it put out more horsepower than the camaro, and was better looking of course.
Cameron Patterson
That’s ridiculous but it was better looking. It’s been the same car since 83 since GM wouldn’t allow Pontiac engines in the bird (or any car)
@@roninkraut6873 the high trim trans ams made more hp than the camaro, GM didn't want the trans am to out perform their poster child (Corvette)

I thought they (mainly camaro) were doing burnout's but they were drag racing. Strange
Wish I had either of those now. Those were sick cars when I was in high school
And still sick now too 👍
Those damn camaros are so hard to work on I'll never know why they put the motor under the dash I have have one it's a 3.8 v6 though
The reason is for weight distribution
True,, I spent all day changing plugs in mine. But setting the engine back farther is what makes it handle so well.
Wealth of information that is still applicable today!
wondering why you guy introduced te camaro from Michigan instead of Quebec Canada from where it was built?
This shows how far cars have come. The mustang had 5.4 second 0-60 time and the new Raptor can do 0-60 in 5.2 seconds
My boss Ray😁 from Sacramento ✌️do it now drywall👍 had one it kicked ass he did some engine mods really 🍀 got R done😎✌️
Those late 90's GM's looked good; but hard to ride in when over 6 foot. The t-toped cars make it better....until it rains.

I always liked the Trans Am Ws6 and the Cobras better.

Growing up in this era and in a small Tennessee town, everybody had one of these two cars or a truck..You weren't cool without one of those three..Back when we still rode around town on the weekends.
The 3rd Gen Camaro is the best looking, in my opinion.
I agree. I loved the looks of my '88 and '84 beasts.
