Tony Benn's summery is spot on. Which is why so many turn to alternative media like the internet, to get more robust discussion where complicated issues are given justified explanation. The problem that always frustrated me was that politicians know they have only a few minutes for their interview on national TV and if they evade for long enough they can get away leaving us none the wiser.
Perhaps the most shocking (for some) and telling (for others) part of this is where Jon states that the struggle is now over. Power has _never_ been so lopsided as now and he doesn't seem even remotely aware of the fact. Poor man. He needs to start listening to more normal people have conversations -- heck, even take part in them ... though they do often go on longer than 30 seconds, so he may need a tape recorder on hand for that old attention-span thing so many folks seem to have trouble with. Complex ideas take time to explain no matter how bright the interlocutors. Presuming everyone's stupidity being equal to Jon's isn't a good way to go about things. I wonder if he still tries to play the piano ...
IMHO John Snow is one of the least bright journalists in the MSM. Huge respect for Tony Benn. I believe his integrity to have been impeccable. I wonder how many of the current 650 MPs we could say the same about.
I appreciate John Snow. Out of all TV News "anchors" I think he's the best one. Out of all TV correspondents, I think Jeremy Bowen is the best. I remember when he disputed Gaddafi, inside Libya, in the middle of the uprising. Great courage.
Tony Benn, a very venerable and highly principled man. I recall Murmuck's rags vilification of him with bug eyed photos. Jon Snow is one of our better news anchors. Regrettably he's resigned. Something I wish that old tory Andrew Neill would.
Jon Snow not doing a very good job there of defending his entertainment vehicle / 'news' show. Loyalty to advertisers doesn't _always_ pay off though, Jon. Ask Google.
John Snow - Tony I’m not that influential How in earth did he keep a straight face. The face of Alistair Campbells New Labour along with his other motley crew
Mr Benn could easily be an interviewer but Snow had no chance of being a politician of any worth. Snow's main problem is that he finds himself interesting when in fact the opposite is true.
This interesting discussion was in 2006 or thereabouts. At 3:00 Tony Benn refers to the local elections being taken over by discussion about whether Blair, Cameron or Campbell would win. This would thus have been when Blair was Prime Minister, David Cameron was Leader of the opposition, and Menzies Campbell was LibDem leader. Jon Snow was then a respected and balanced TV interviewer and not as he is in 2019 seen as politically tilted.
I've great respect for both men. I don't think it's quite fair for Tony Benn to pass off Jon Snow as a conservative cog in the establishment; it'd be just as easy to dismiss Tony Benn as an ideological dreamer.
If you want to understand the role of the corporate media, you have to read 'Manufacturing Consent' by Ed Herman and Noam Chomsky. Tony Benn was a leader in the movement that opposed everything that has been base and exploitative in Britain.
***** I think it's fair to say that recommending Manufacturing Consent is a cliche. However, if you think Chomsky is a "Marxist" you've obviously got a very skewed, reductive view of left wing politics.
+Thom Harrison How so? Also, if you knew where the 'left' and 'right' ideologies were borne out of you wouldn't be so quick to act like a disaffected intellectual smoking rollies in a backwater bar festooned with ripped posters of Che Guevara - you'd realise you've been duped; you'd realise there's no such thing as the 'left' or the 'right' - only the truth. The truth is the only thing that matters. So, if Chomsky has many beliefs that align with Marx, it doesn't mean he IS a Marxist, but it most certainly seems like it.
Oh John you certainly do have a limited intellect but at least you know your limits. Personally I find him part of the metropolitan bourgeoisie left who loathes everything about the past and most of us in it.
the best prime minister we never had
I agree Jon Snow is amazing.

That’s exactly what current Tory MP’s are doing, for them an interview is a run the clock down exercise and it works!

I think he got him on 'international community', a neutral-sounding phrase that is anything but.
There are lots of insightful sound bites here. Well worth understanding.

Theatre+"Manufacturered Consent"= TV interview. I like Snow but people value quality discussions, lets not forget that.

The rule in the digital age is: you have 3 seconds to get someone's attention for 30 seconds to get their attention for 3 minutes
Well said.
'The death of the ideological struggle' oh dear, John is one of the 'end of history' folk.
Why could we never have someone like this running the country? It's like seeing a unicorn, a politician that tells the truth. "Dodgy Dave" 🤣

Benn allows Snow enough rope to hang himself. Snow thinks he's won but at the end is knocked out cold buy Benn's summary.

Jon Snow, I've just changed the channel! I'd much rather be presented with the news from a person who does not have a limited intellect.
Well you will never read the news.
I think he meant by "ideological struggle" the end of the cold war. Not UK class struggle.
Really? Did mr snow ever acknowledge class strugle in uk or anywhere?
Jon Snow, the Bill O'Reilly of Britain
very inaccurate
He’s the best of the best, since death of Frost he’s up there

***** Do you have any substantial argument with the ideas he puts forward?
+redword2007 Because the right rarely bother to counter an argument when they can ignore it and persuade people its exponents are dangerous radicals.

The purpose of a Channel Four interview is to increase the chances that the captive audience will vote Labour.
