I'll explain why I burned out in archery. The bow and arrow always fascinated me, not because I wanted to be accurate, but because I wanted to be fast. But it wasn't enough. I wanted to be a fast archer on the run. And I made it my goal to learn to shoot one arrow in a second and a half while running. I achieved it. And that was the end of me.
Every coach and motivator will tell you to give yourself an achievable goal that you plan and go step by step towards it. Well, but what about when you reach it? What about when you achieve something that seemed so far away? In my case, I did it. At one point, I sprinted and fired three arrows a second and a half apart and hit all three targets. At that exact moment, my interest in the bow and arrow completely shut down. It's like when you turn off the light and it's just dark.
I was extremely motivated by my target. I worked on myself every day. Shooting, trying different bows, different techniques, keeping me awake and always thinking about how to achieve my goal. That was amazing. At the same time, that's what caused me to quit and not care about archery. I made a terrible mistake. You can't think of archery as the ultimate thing, as something you achieve. Archery is a never-ending process of improving your body, mind and spirit. It's so primitively simple as to be an infinitely complex and difficult discipline.
Honestly, I haven't shot in four months. Occasionally I'll pick up my bow and try my quick nocking and when I find I can still do it, I put the bow aside and don't notice it for weeks. Now it's up to me to see if, despite the burnout and disinterest inside, I can find a new path, a more spiritual, long-term and, most importantly, sustainable one to start again. Not to continue. But to start again. To come down from the mountain of achieving rapid-fire running and walk a new path that should last a lifetime...
Don't make the same mistake I did. Don't put a goal where there is none. Don't give yourself a goal where the road never ends. Pick a direction and just go where you can go... That's my advice.

Get some combat archery foam tips for your arrows, and get some people together to shoot each other. Archery is far more fun when your target is moving and shooting back.
Also, move up to higher pound bows and then try to be just as fast.

You, out of all the archers I have met and seen, have shown me that the running archers in movies and fantasies can be realized! The dream of running free while loosing fully-drawn arrows with great abandon is something I had resigned my self to accept as “unrealistic” until I found out about you. Wherever your path leads you, I hope you find happiness there. To me you have forever helped changed the world of archery and allowed it to further evolve into exciting new possibilities. Thank you.

Charlie you, Armin, Lars Anderson, Martin Sporri, and sp many others have been such a blessing on my life. I've been motivated and inspired watching videos from yall many times over and I know this feeling. The part at min. 1:30-40 is well said. It's never ending and will go as far as you are willing to take it. I started this for self defense/home defense as I dont like guns, am broke yet still believe we should do what we can if we choose to step up to the plate. All who I mentioned are some of the best Archers/speed/acrobatic shooters around. We deserve it. Sometimes breaks are necessary. If you hit a block try incorporating a quiver from hip or back with similar concepts. It's very enjoyable and much easier than holding all the arrows constantly. And Aiming can always be refined. I make my own bows and arrows now and am one of the fastest out there to my knowledge but I'm definently not the most accurate. There is always something to work at and the hobby/art/ survival necessity doesnt have an end so much as it just adds to our lives and makes us more capable. Stay with it regardless of the bids but you are seriously good at the cinema camera work and editing and these vids are always enjoyable to watch. God bless and stay strong brother!1👍🎯

Absolutely. You can sometimes also see this in olympic athletes and such - they win, they break a world recor, and then... their life is over.

Hello Charly, It breaks my heart to hear you say that you don’t enjoy archery anymore. It’s always difficult to give wise advice in these situations, but in my case, when fast shooting was what I wanted to do and what i liked in archery, the new thing that gave me sort of second breath was long draw length bows. Beyond 33" is like a completely different way of shooting for me, and it tends to push me to take some extra time in my shooting, and by the way, I discovered new sensations that you can’t feel when shooting very fast. And at last, remember that you don’t have to love archery forever. Nothing force you to. It’s sad, but there are plenty of things in life that could replace it if you want and if you need.
Take care of you, thanks for all you’ve done for us Charly

I use archery as an inner martial art: there is the physical practice part, where you keep your body fit, hone your movements and forms; on the other hand it is kinda similar to a meditation session for me, doing it without any goal (which is a movement of thought), just observing, being present. This way the shooting, the whole process becomes you. The archery is the archer ^^ So, since it's kind of a state, not an act anymore, it may defo last for a lifetime - if one looks at it as a motivation

The more I listen to your video, the more I see my past mistakes. Setting goals is ok as long as they are part of a bigger, neverending mission.
I did the same with painting. I really wanted to be able to paint a portrait “a la prima”. And when I did it, I wasn’t interested in painting anymore.
Indeed I’ve never painted anymore since then.
I hope this is not your situation.
If I should guess, archery is not your problem, rather setting a goal per se which is not enough to push you forward. Am I wrong?
Something of the love for archery is still inside you.
You try your fast knocking some in a while.
You try to see if you are still able to do it.
I am not in your head, so my ones are just “may be”.
May be archery inside you is just asking to be transformed. To evolve.
From “being able to do this and this”, to “heal myself through it”.
Or may be just archery wasn’t for you, it was just the taste for the challenge.
But when I listen to your words, I can feel true love for archery. I hope it can find a new way to rebirth again, like a phoenix.

If I ever start to feel burnout with modern barebow recurve I just shoot my longbow. Also have a horsebow on the way. There's so many styles and formats to shoot. I've only really done 3d. Field, outdoor and indoor all have different elements to master. It's a pursuit for me which is endless in nature.

Same thing happened to me. It happens to many men. It's not even really burn out, it's that you just aren't as interested as you used to be. You don't have a need to get better. If you were a warrior. then you would have officers and generals pushing you to get better all the time, and you would be tested to be sure you maintained yourself. Maybe you could do that. Maybe you could shift your goal to include firearms. Running precision sports, so you are as effective with a rifle, a hand gun, or with a bow. What about horseback archery? Think about how deadly you could be, by being effective with any and all projectile weapons. What about a sling? I don't mean the slingshot with the rubber bands, I mean the kind of sling made with leather thongs. What about a staff sling? Include more tools into your portfolio. This way when you get bored of one thing, you can still continue to practice and become more effective with your hand eye coordination and kinesthetic abilities, just with a different tool, or different technique. Also reach out to Armin Hirmer in Malta...he's been doing archery for a lifetime. he may have some suggestions to get you back up on the horse in some way.

P.S. You ARE a great inspiration and great source of knowledge. At 39 I really got excited when I tried traditional archery after going to the club with my 10 y.o. daughter that got her first bow. You inspired me to go towards speed shooting- which I want to try now, just my 45# Grozer Medieval Hungarian is too strong and based on your reviews I think I'll buy a Bogar Hungarian (I don't dig the looks on Assyrian). Thanks.

      Hi!
Thanks for a great message :)
I do not like the competition idea. 2 reasons - 1. I'm not focused on accuracy, I just don't care if I hit 8 or 10. In both cases the "enemy" would be out of the battle. 2. Everything in my life is challengeng and I meet competition everywhere (I'm in business and team sports for like 15 years, sports 25 years). Archery is place where I do things just as I want it and my only opponent is myself.
Fast nocks are not available anymore. The design needs improvements and I just don't have the energy and also don't want to spend more money on another testing.
The story with you daughter and speed shooting is amazing. Go for it!

Super late to the party, but i guess that is a problem when accuracy is not a goal for you as an archer. if you take accuracy out of the picture, and by that i mean you are happy with hitting a 50x50 cm target from 20m there is not a lot to learn. you can put all the running and fastshooting you want in the mix, but it still something that is easily achievable. Lars has a video showcasing this pretty well. Accuracy is what makes archery never ending. Try putting this in the goal, same running and fastshooting, but now the targets are ping pong balls. I bet you will have enough work to do for the next 5 years. Cheers and hope you keep shooting!

It will come in a right moment.
    That is not for goal.
When you was in process of archering itself, there was no mind, no thoughts, those episodes of silence inside all of your being. That gives unconditional joy, like in childhood.
That's why you where in archery.
    Not because of goal.
Your mind decided to give up, because hе "achieve" something. But truth is, that goal of your mind never was a reason of you archery. That was for joy of archery itself. For joy of your Being in process. Without condition or goals.
Your mind unconsciously wanted that fealing, that state of being. But made a wrong conclusion, that "when" he achieve that goal - he will get this state, this peace and joy. And when that was formally achived - total disappointment. Because "Goal" achieved, but there isn't that state, that he really subconsciously wanted. Real goal was in another.
    See You.

Yes it is something meant to be a challange. My goal was hit the puta target from 180 metric meters because that is a well known competition shooting distance. I am still not on the level of a serious competitor.
But I don't come home without of a hit neither. Yes it takes 30 or 40+ shots depends on many little things that day.
But I do it without a spoken word, or just simple presense of anybody. I had bath*t nothing. No help! I learnd how to shoot from the youtube. No joke!
Than I started recording myself. I had to watch the video and see what I do? What are my mistakes? because I had nombody to watch me and tell me. Not even that little help. It was a solo trip. Targets are not the point of archery. Bow is a weapon, tool for survive. You are the great master of one part of archery. Archery is big part of life of people who depend of archery, Hadza, Bushman people. In the past, warriors. Two things, running shooting is no only point of archery, and archery is not the point of surviving this days. Like sport horses. High jump's and fast running is not what making war horse, working or wild horse complete. Also, it's not a point of rider and horse, together. For some people, and horses, that is enough. I think you have crisis of purpose, what are you doing and why are you doing. Change perspective of wiew, or find deeper meaning of archery and what you want from your self. And archery. I hope you will be back, and i shore you will be better and complete archer and person. Or maybe i am wrong, sorry. Best wises for you!

Nebaví mě střelba a přesnost. Honit se za tím, jestli to bylo devítka nebo desítka a co vystřelí ten borec vedle, pro mě není. Ale díky za nápad.

Dude. Been watching your videos for over a year and I love them, but this is terrible advice.
Had you someone of greater experience, maturity and wisdom to counsel you how set and re-set objectives, targets/goals, milestones and purpose, and importantly to differentiate between these different things, you would have avoided this problem. This is not good mentorship for people in a similar situation to yourself.
The ego can lead one to assume they’ve attained mastery or a particular station/rank. But maybe the real target was not to hit a bullseye while running, but rather to find a higher purpose for your undertakings.
