Well then you would think that it would be played when collecting a 100-coin star because Mario doesn't leave a level but I just checked and he just kinda pretends it never happened lol
That would be correct. I took a look and noticed mario is looking at his pocket and his hand is on his left pocket. I tested this animation over the "key get" animation and it fits like a glove(pun intended). It doesn't really fit with anything else. Maybe at one point mario was supposed to take something other than a star from levels. Maybe a collectable like a gem that unlocks a level at the end of the game, but was scrapped. The only other explanation is that this Was the early luigi "key get" animation, but I highly doubt that it would be.
The A pose is the pose the Mario in the mirror on the 2nd floor does when you enter in a Paint of that zone. You can ser it on TetraBitGaming's video about beating SM64 While being giant
