    One of my teachers in nursing school had a colostomy. She did classes on the surgery and care etc but didn’t let anyone know she had a colostomy until the course was ending. No one ever guessed. She was an energetic, active woman who wanted to do and experience everything. I know that is what you want too, Malin!!

    I had an Ileostomy 18 years ago and I can honestly say I wouldn't go back. I went travelling in a van for three months which I wouldn't have been able to do. It gives you back so much control over your life. It takes a while to adjust mentally but you will get there. Congratulations on making a good choice. Good luck with your next surgery.

    Hi Marlin, I had rectal cancer at the age of 50 . I’ve had a permanent stoma for 17 years now and it has saved my life. Its life changing and devastating at first but there’s times now I don’t even realize I have one. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. Take care of yourself and rest...it is a major surgery. I wish you well.❤

    Bravo for facing such a hard choice and doing so head on. As a cancer survivor myself, we share the knowledge that there is no way of coming out of this process unscathed and without a heavy cost - but come out of it we can and will. Sending much love and hugs xxx

    I had a lower anterior resection (LAR) surgery when my colorectal cancer was found. I was fortunate that my cancer was found at stage 1. I’ve read a lot about people who had the radiation and LARS. Many of them have the same problems you mentioned- need a toilet nearby and hope they make it on time to the toilet. I think you made the right decision. I know if my cancer returns and I need additional surgeries, I will go for the bag.

    I had the same 4 months ago and i have got used to having a bag now and its permanent im used to the bag now and tbf its been great no running to the toilet at all i could of had a reconnection but i have chose to keep the bag to avoid other complications and more hospital visits i still gotta go back for another massive operation to have rectum removed i really dont want too as im recovered now but i have to because of cancer just waiting on a date for the next surgery dreading it as i have heard its a lot worse recovery than the stoma surgery and i wont be able to sit down or move about properly etc but if it gives me more life than im all for it i wish you all the best god bless x

Once I eat, I have little time before I'm in the bathroom. You are making the right choice, never doubt that! Sorry you all got that stomach bug but thank goodness it is going away. Hi, glad you are recovering. I'm a nurse. Many people live a normal life with a colostomy. Learn what stoma products work for you, there are several on the market. Put together a travel pouch or bag with all the needed supplies. That being the stoma bag, wafer ( the adhesive sticky item that holds the bag on), wet wipes, hand sanitizer, scissors to cut the wafer if you have the cut to fit kind, maybe paper towels. Keep this bag of items always supplied so you can grab it and go. You will get the hang of it and do well. Love and wellbeing and happiness to you both....

      Thanks Linda! That’s great advice. The Swedish healthcare system is great, they provide all stoma patients with everything they need, including a travel bag (2 in Malin’s case, as she’s had 2 stoma operations).
      There’s so much to think about with a new colostomy, we’re grateful that a lot of the thinking was done for us.

    Mainl my names Adrian I had a very low colorectal resection and most of my sigmoid removed 3 yrs ago and had a loop ileostomy which should have been reversed after 3 months but covid intervened and I had to wait 2 yrs so I was like a baby starting to learn to poo . I xwas going 40 times a day for 2 wks at the worst but I am down to 8 -10 a day which is as good as it will get I carry a urgent toilet card which no one has refused yet so that's my life now. I really wanted to keep my stoma but had such bad problems with really severe blockages which is always a worrie with stomas but I had no choice any way keep your head up and enjoy your life it has made me appreciate every thing more.

You will absolutely be able to live an active enjoyable life with no restrictions. I was amazed at how good I felt, and how I could still do everything. When I had my surgery I was so depressed. I never thought I would be able to adjust and it took a month and I realized that it was so doable and that I would rather have a life. Your going to do great! Just be patient with you body and have humor. There are loads of great people on UA-cam that will give great inspiration to you. That also really helped me.

I had never heard of having to urgently use the toilet all the time after a reconnection. I was never even told that was a possibility. Maybe the area where they reconnect in different people affects each person’s need to go.

    I wanted to say one thing about the choice of a permanent stoma. It's not at all permanent IMO. Medical progress is amazing, especially now that AI is getting into the game. 10 or 20 years from now there may be artificial colons and good medicines to make it so you don't run to the toilet so many times a day. I think this is certainly the right decision now, being that it seems like such an easy one for you. But I would think of it as "permanent - for now." Best wishes.

    Hi. I have no idea why UA-cam wants me to watch this kind of videos lately, but oh well. My question is why wouldn't you at least try reconnection surgery and see if it is really that bad? It might not be, but If it is, you can still get the stoma bag. One extra surgery means nothing, a month or two of extra recovery maybe, vs. living with your decision for the next 50+ years. I know your perception probably dramatically changes once you are in that kind of situation, but I, being extremely OCD about toilet stuff (even at 35), would NEVER agree to a stoma bag.

    • @malinandtom
      @malinandtom  Рік тому +2

      Hi! The reason that I’m not going for the reconnection surgery is because of the risks with the surgery and after (plus the fact that they basically say it’s not a chance it’s going to be good). It’s a high risk surgery to start with, and then it’s a 15% chance that the reconnection is going to break and then I will have massive complications from that and still end up with a stoma. If I try the reconnection surgery and then decide that I want a stoma it’s a much more complicated surgery (according to my doctor) and they don’t want to do that if they really don’t have to. So if I decide to not have a stoma and it’s not good I basically have to live with that decision and have 50+ years spent on a toilet or near one. So for me it’s a easy choice, I understand it’s not like that for everyone but I want a life back that I don’t spend worrying about having a toilet close by.

    • @nts_nathaniel
      @nts_nathaniel Рік тому +1

      @@malinandtom Okay, I understand. I personally would love to try to do the van or car thing for a day or two sometimes, but the toilet availability is a total deal breaker for me. I watch a lot of van lifers to know that the occasional #2 in a bag is just an unavoidable part of van life. So if you look positively on all this nightmare, you are getting high-tech, medically graded solution for bag-in-a-bucket situations. :)
      Another question: Did you get used to it quickly and what is changing the bag like? I heard it's mostly fluid-y stuff. I also heard the smell is not as bad as one would expect. Can you feel "going" into a bag or does "the stuff" just flow little by little all the time?

    Why not go ahead and take out the ovaries? PS, marry that beautiful woman! Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery ❤

      Ovaries enhance health so much. Hormonally there’s no sudden menopause, the bones and muscles are protected more. It’s a great thing to retain ovaries.

      Not allowed to lift anything heavier than a pack of milk, so basically nothing.

      Keeping the ovaries really enhances your life especially around menopause, and aids bone health amongst so many other things. It’s great that this is acknowledged in modern medicine
