One Final Look Led to Some Incredible Findings! Goex Powder Mill (Deadly Accident Site)

- This area is in jeopardy of being erased forever...
At one time this was the only black powder mill in America, but it was also home to deadly accidents with the most recent one in 1997. After closing, nature reclaimed and I visited here in 2017 to document the site.
There's been talks as of recent to build a massive warehouse facility and if that does indeed happen, the entire site will be erased, including the history. So in order to help preserve this history, I was determined to return sooner than later to fully explore and document the acres upon acres of this former powder mill. Little did I know that I missed several items when I explored it 7yrs ago, but today we found more then I even knew existed.

I know this is a very lengthy video, so feel free to add it to watch later and watch it in smaller parts.
Only the future will tell if this will be the final look, but it's atleast the most indepth look we have.
I always watch longer videos on 1.5 speed! Plus it looks like you’re going 80 mph on your e-bike!
With that building been abandoned for so long. It's worth to be checking out more IDK, maybe I watch too many missing case's.. BUT ??
I love these longer videos, you can really sit down with a cup of coffee and a snack and enjoy. Thanks for the hard work you put into this video 🤗💙
That's exactly what they're made for. Kick back and enjoy the adventure.
Same. We're spending our Sunday morning with coffee and an adventure
SAME!!!
@@MEL2theJ sounds like a great morning 🤗
No doubt! I miss Pennsylvania bro and this lets me chill and see my home state much love JP!
The main reason I subscribed and watch your channel is because you take "us" to places off the beaten path so to speak. You video document places that have significant historical value to humankind, but will sooner or later not exist because of "progress". It's a shame that we lose our past without documentation to progress. We MUST always remember where we came from and the fight and conditions our ancestors fought through to achieve the rights and luxuries we have today that most don't appreciate. I applaud you for your efforts and work to document these places and the work to share them with us and take us along for the discovery. I explore my area as much as possible, but I don't have access to the history you do. I live in Indiana; which has some historical interactions and "wars" with Indian "or more appropriately"Native Americans". There are some beautiful areas here that are associated with Native American"conflicts" and"wars". The beauty and simply the access to the rest of "America" is a subtle reminder to why the native people fought to retain this land to an invading people. Alas progress will always prevail and channels like yours will document what was before. THANK YOU for your efforts and thank you for allowing me to "come along" with you.
It's amazing and shameful to me how much trash is just dumped by people. I'm an avid outdoorsman and I always bring out more trash than I bring in. I keep several trash bags in my backpack and tackle box for such occasions. I understand that there are many places that you and I come across that are beyond our capabilities to clean up; and that's a shame on the individuals that put it there.
Glad you keep up with what’s going on and you knew you had to get in there and document the area. I’m not surprised at how much it’s changed. We are closing in on a decade since you were first there. Hopefully this won’t be your last visit but I fear it may be. Thanks for the invite to come along.😊💙
Jay your enthusiam and passion for these old finds is infectious. Another awsome vid.
😊
Just subscribed. I live a little south of here. When I saw the end of the runway I knew exactly where you were. I will enjoy watching your videos and explore my local PA with you.
Thanks for checking it out
What an incredible adventure! It was fun riding all the cool trails. Lots of great history and I thought it was so interesting when you showed the old photos in relation to what it looks like now. Love the old water well and the old explosive sign. When you pointed out those googly eyes, I kept thinking, now those walls are watching you. lol The huge, tall structure looked like it had been three stories to me too and you are right, the craftsmanship that went into constructing the retaining wall is unbelievable! The last smaller structure was really neat too, I have never seen a nest like that either. lol You found so much and now you have it documented a couple times, that is wonderful! Beautiful photos and an amazing video JP, thank you! 💙
Funny you mentioned that. After that clip I thought about making a joke about being watched 👀 lol. Hopefully it wont disappear anytime soon, but if it does, we knew what once existed.
I will agree, Jay, What you find is amazing and incredible. I always enjoy watching too.
One of the main reasons I enjoy your channel is because of videos like this. You DON'T cover what everyone else is covering. Making these vids, do you ever stop and wonder what would be said about current day ruins 100 yrs in the future? Thank you for your efforts!
Makes ya wonder if modern day things will be covered and what could be said about them.
@@JPVideos81 check out this book from 1979 "Motel of the Mysteries" It's a humorous look at this.
You need a vintage Kombat Wombat Dirt Bike to get around those rocky areas to the ruins. Thanks for capturing this before it is no more. Excellent as always.
With all the coal seams in that area I wouldn't be surprised if some of those structures were mining related along with the powder mill remains, that would also explain the railroad beds in different areas you explored. Those buildings with the slots in them look like winch houses and the slots would have allowed the cables to pass through and go down into a mine shaft to bring coal to the surface
Interesting video JP,what kept me watching was the anxiety of what's next that you're going to find.Thank you
Amazing video, JP! Just a bit on the short side though. I didn't want it to end. 😏
😊
Love hearing about the history of a place & the longer videos are great.
Fantastic video JP, that small building with the porcelain electrical indicators, I think that probably was a transformer. And that tree, with that orange substance on the outside, that is very unusual. I never seen that before. Very strange. I loved seeing all the old buildings, and that grease substance, on that concrete, that is very unusual and strange too. Could have been a machine building, weird to see grease last that long, I know that machine shop grease like smell you talked about, it's a strong smell. Like walking into a mechanic shop, or a machine shop. So I think that's what it was.
I agree JP, that river rock and rail road tie wall is amazing, very well made. Amazing to see that "danger explosives sign" incredible structure of a wall.
No boredom here!!! Great video JP!
This is The Longest Creator made video I’ve ever watched. A testament to your skills to find local historical sites and share your excitement in exploring them with us. Kudos to you JP. I hope someone see this and has access to maps and images of when it was at its peak of activity.
Thanks for taking the time to watch
Thanks for taking us exploring! It's too hot to do it myself so this is the next best thing. Please be careful out there. I hope someone knows where you are on all your adventures.
Thanks for checking it out
I enjoyed this vid. Thanks for taking the effort to produce it.
My pleasure
This was a nice ride and interesting too. Surprised the airport hasn't bought any of that land. I hope it stays like it is. The young turkeys were cool. The orange on the tree looked like orange crust fungus or maybe orange goo fungus though those are usually on live trees. Whatever it was, it was a pretty fungus. Thanks for taking us along on this ride. You found all sorts of new things plus got to see updates on areas you already explored.
I could clean up and fix up that bunker house with Tyvek, a steel roof, triple-pane window, insulation, and a heavy plank door and make a lovely tiny house for myself. 😅
😁
Great comment 🙂👍
As I was watching him point out things my mind was going in the very same direction!! TINY HOME!!
Love this exploration! I wish I could get out and do some! but watching these videos is a great alternative. Does someone have your phone location on? As a mom I worry about people out in "the wilds" by themselves. That huge retaining wall is amazing!
I enjoyed this video, looks like some old mining property. Thanks for this upload this was pretty rad
That small building near the end, looks like a guard shack to me. Very interesting stuff!
Outstanding video. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. You did some risky moves too, that scared me. I wasn't sure I would like the biking videos when you first got your bikes, but watching a few has been very interesting and they help you get places a lot better.
Glad you gave it a chance and see the possibilities they bring to exploring.
Amazing! So much history reclaimed back to mother nature.
I am a history-buff so exploring these old sites is incredibly interesting for me. Makes me wonder WHO will be exploring abondoned sites that are still operational today in 40-50 years!!!!
Glad you enjoyed the tour
Thanks JP!! You always take us into a bit of history when you explore and give us a bit of your take on what was previously there..
Enjoy when you explore PA
I remember when you were there in 2017.and it has changed. I love this
Man and nature has certainly changed it
Awesome video Jay! I am just now getting to it but it was a great exploration video. Keep these. Video types coming!
I love that you document things before they are gone.
Thanks!
Wow! I watched it in 3 parts and boy what a great adventure! JP it’s so neat to see your excitement and enthusiasm when you find another structure, street light or more railroad ties! That place was massive and that wall you showed was nothing short of incredible work and when they did that in those days, that was some hard, hard work!
It was a fun day of adventure
Thanks for the adventure! Always fun to be along whether 30 minutes or 90😊 I think tarp on the one building is deer hunters. I worry for you though. I've had many a deer pop out in front of me on my ebike while exploring like you. Be safe cruising at high teen speeds in that foliage.
As always awesome video. Love all your videos especially the longer ones. Thanks Jay x
That video has the perfect length for some after-lunch chill before going back to work. Exciting sights and finds you are sharing. And while summer with all the foliage might be bad for exploring, it creates a cozy atmosphere when watching the video now, in late October. Thank you!
I enjoyed this very much, JP. I looked up that Underground Miners site on this place. Some of their before and after photos there match up to your discoveries today, like that small building built into the hill. I posted some of those with the photos you took on Facebook for comparison. Thanks for your time and effort doing these and posting the videos.
Loved the video!
another great video JP
This was such a fun cool explore jp thank you for taking us along you found so many cool things along the way ❤❤❤
Appreciate you watching this adventure 💙
I appreciate your channel. I'm learning about ebikes. ❤
Happy to hear that!
Awesome revisit and adventure JP! You told the story excellent with all the old pictures from the past! Its always great to see the before and after of the places you explore! Awesome video! Excellent adventure! As always, Thanks for bringing us along!👍
I wish more of what once existed was still there, but I'm glad with what we documented.
Loved this journey so many interesting finds. That’s what I love about the woods, even the repeats are as interesting &beautiful as the first time. Fantastic time, thanks for your time & efforts.
Thank you for taking us on this interesting adventure! My husband and I put you up on the bigscreen and drank coffee while we enjoyed your video!! Awesome work!! Stay safe out there!!💙
💙😊
Great find. Can you imagine someone who worked there watching this 😳
That would be neat
WoW! This was a fantastic exploration Jay! I REALLY enjoyed it and the length of it. It was very interesting. Ya did a great job as always. Plzz do more long videos. God Bless 🙏🙏🌺
Thank you Alexandria
I love the wall made out of ties and rocks. Sooo cool !!!
What an amazing video. I felt like I was on a journey with you. So many great finds. Even the lovely green scenery was so nice. Thank you for sharing with us! 😸
Thanks for coming along 💙
Another amazing video!!! Loving how you found new buildings.
that was a nice adventure jp, never seen anyting like that last structure, the bike helps alot with adventures, nice video jp
Even with the bike, it took me over 3hrs to cover the entire area. Imagine if I didnt have it...
I loved this video !! And the time on the video was just fine !! There were so many cool things to be discovered out here all the buildings and section where there used to be railways ....crazy sad to see history like this wiped out ...very sad but I have to sat that retaining wall was really really amazing !! This video was great and so where the pictures at the end !! I love your channel !! Keep up the amazing work !!!👍👍
That wall was unlike one I've ever seen and and it not only looks amazing, but it's still doing its job decades later.
Really enjoyed the video ! Thank you !👍💙
💙😊
Video was amazing of all the finds. Long videos hold my attention
Ty susan
Jason this video is amazing! It’s like a lost city in there! I love the history and you always make it fun to watch! One of the best so far. Thank you! 👍❤️🥰
Thanks so much
Great job J! Love it
Thanks so much!
Fascinating! I love this stuff. Thank You!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@JPVideos81 really interested in the EBike you have. thinking of investing in one
The length was daunting but man what a great exploration video! I felt like I was right there. Super fun way to spend some time on a Sunday morning 😊
Appreciate you watching
Greetings, JP. Thank you for a nice long video. That phenomenal retaining wall alone was worth your commute. It is the equivalent of some superb gobbing walls found in explorations of abandoned mining sites. It is too bad you could not use a picture of the retaining wall to create a really fiendish jigsaw puzzle. Keep well.
Hell yeah love exploring placed like that still got my scooter going strong 600 miles on it so far
Thanks for sharing with us. Man, this reminds me so much of the area I grew up in’s up in, in Upstate NY! Beautiful backcountry woods and trails and RR tracks. We used to ride dirt bikes back in there.
We really enjoyed this video 👍
Thank you for all of your hard work JPVideos.
We were wondering if that orange sap like substance was a fungi?
I'm going to look through the comments for the answers that I seek 🙂
A lot of knowledgeable subscribers on this channel.
Thanks again!
Whatever it is, ita was bright enough to catch my attention.
Great video Buddy
Thank you for a recommended amount for the song for the bicycle it worked out pretty good I got the same out you got for your phone and it works awesome thank you again
Great adventure Jay glad you chose this place great video
Thanks for sharing !!
My pleasure!!
Long video's are good. By the way. I really like your video's. Me and my son do the samething in southern Iowa we ride our bikes on old dirt roads and explore old coal mines, abandoned houses and barns. We love that stuff. I'm definitely getting a aniioki e bike. Lol thanks. Keep making videos me and my son really like watching your channel.
Thanks for checking it out
Great job👍👍
Those electrical buildings with the slots MIGHT have been for flat belts from a steam engine outside the building to a generator mounted inside.
Yes was awesome I like seeing things from the past thanks
Very nice video. Me personally, I don't mind the length.
That piece of coal was so beautiful! I found coal once, my son, in his early teens, usually a good kid but just before Christmas there was a problem,I put the coal with gifts in his stocking. He was not amused or pleased, he threw it away! Then we were both not amused or pleased.
I love seeing time lapse photos of locations. Very cool!!
Just think tho, one day the warehouses will age and go away and nature will come back in. Might take 100 years, but it’ll happen.
Maybe it’s a guard shack , time clock house something like that ? Love the videos , just started watching and I’ve been bin watching lol love the bike . If I could afford 1 I’d love to do what you’re doing !! Thanks
16:30 it looks like a mini railroad turntable. They were probably using pushcarts on tracks and not running anything powered that could make a spark.
I'm adding this comment. 👌🏻
After seeing my statement after somebody 👍🏻, I noticed the time I mentioned of 16:30.
Being a train comment, the number 1630 is also the Frisco decapod steam engine in service of the Illinois Railway Museum.
Just an odd coincidence 🤔
Correct
Love your content
Your knowledge of the railway system in your area is amazing. Could you give me some insight and instruction on how you achieved this knowledge?
I dont know nearly as much as others. What I did learn was from my own research and help from friends & viewers.
Cool and interesting.Beautiful area.
With the advent of E-bikes and the evolution of longer battery life, they have become an excellent tool for exploring. They are stealthy and quiet, unlike an ICE two-wheeled vehicle. This exploration you did, you were able to cover a lot of ground, on foot, it may have taken many trips to do the same.
Absolutely true!
That crumbly material is slate which is common in Pennsylvania. It has a lot of fossils inside the layers when you carefully break off latter sections
I think all these little buildings with electrical insulators were motor houses to power either conveyor belts or possibly a cable system to pull around the railcarts. A lot of these structures had to be where sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal were hauled in, dumped, moved around for processing, and mixed to make the black powder. The little, narrow openings were probably where chutes entered from storage bins.
The bridge abutment by Signature Builders plant was for the Wilkes-Barre and Eastern Railroad
That overhang of rock with the decomposing layers underneath looks a lot like shale, which IS very unstable. You were smart to not venture too close!
Not only check for ticks, but it also looks like a great place to get tangled up in poison ivy!
I believe the orange stuff coming out of the downed tree is a type of fungus, and just living on the tree.
It appeared to me, on your longshot overview of the large building, as you were figuring out how to get down there, that there was actually another road/trail just to the downhill side of the building, that was probably an easier access.
That was an incredibly complex and interesting retaining wall. I've never seen anything like that anywhere!
That was very cool. Love off road biking. Don't have an e-bike but a regular all terain bike equiped with a Garmin e-trex 20 and good agressive all terain tire and fenders to keep me relativlly mud free!
In the United States of America always choose the right hand path first. It usually leads to the most interesting things. In my area (North Central Indiana) it's usually any country road that has an old cemetery or any country road that is designated as 400 or 700 east, west, north, or south that has the coolest stuff along them. There are acceptions though.
Jay,
Here you go:)Infrequently in the spring, you might see an orange, slimy substance slowly oozing from a wound on a hardwood tree. This is a fungus or a complex of fungi and yeast that colonize the sap that leaks from a tree wound.
Possibly, but there are a number related gooey Fungi, mostly all harmless.
This is a really fun video, and yes, the bike makes a amazing difference.
IT would be wonderful if that could become a nature preserve, but you know the old story,
follow the money. "Sigh"
What a fun adventure!
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Thanks so much Rik
Hey bud graduations I'm glad that you might work out for you that's awesome man glad to see you're happy😂😂
Hi jp that was a lot to see I like to see old stuff I like long video
I have been so glad that I had discovered your channel! I was interested in all the grease on the walls in this one. Why? That rock/railroad tie wall is going to last forever. I really enjoy your videos and the other explorers around the country. (I am always amazed and dissapointed in people. It seems everybody carries spray paint and has the need to deface stuff. Does anyone have any clue as to why? I just cannot figure out the need to do that. Nor why people dump stuff in the middle of nowhere, including heavy stuff.) When we go riding in the woods we spray us and our clothing to avoid ticks, chiggers and biting horse flys. So far so good since the 70's except spray was prob a bit more toxic then. Please take care and thank you so much for these and and the research you do.
Wow, there seems to be a lot of things hiding in those East Pennsylvania woods. I used to explore the woods and fields beyond my childhood home, but I never found stuff like this. Meanwhile, the old fields of my childhood were turned into soccer fields and hiking trails. I'd bet a lot of those little houses could be turned into hunting cabins.
I love the way that you go back in time to share with us as things look like back then .....some of those places look like a place where some one could cook meth in .....or it may have been used as a homeless shelter
I liked it better when you take us in the tunnels and all that and you take us through the small streams and stuff like that and you find landmarks and stuff that's pretty cool then you tell us about the history what you know that is even better thank you again we appreciate it man like I said Forest bikes you're happy I'm happy to leave it like that you have a blessed day you're awesome
Great Videos and thanks adventures. I feel that the metal structure at 1:27:07 could possibly be a Blast shield of some sort for testing explosive mixtures. Not at the present location but some where on the property?
Good to see the land being reused!!!
I think that last little building is like a bunker for people to get in if the shit went wrong. Like a place to get in that could withstand explosions.
Could be...
Hey bud how you doing thank you again for your wonderful videos listen they probably had a generator or some kind of water pump down there
13:17 The bridge abutment was part of the Wilkes Barre and Eastern railway. There once aside and the huge trestle that spanned the spring Brook valley to the other side (about where I-81 is located).
Jay,
I found a bunch of images showing the Dupont
black powder area and I believe that building is labeled as
a fireworks manufacturing plant.
Question when you do this video riding your bike falling a small path and stuff like that what was the temperature outside cuz right now outside right now while we're watching your video inside outside is 95 degrees here in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania thank you for saving history like that that's pretty cool some other thing get to see kind of stuff like that before construction you know that's pretty cool I hate you do that for us you're freaking awesome for doing that man you're the history King thank you again we really appreciate and enjoy your videos
It was in the low 80s when I filmed this.
Thank you for letting me know the temperature at least it's more comfortable where you're at instead of over here we're at with the humidity is about 105 °but we really enjoy the history and all the historical sites that you show us before other people destroy him and stuff like that thank you again we really appreciate it and the stories behind it
Oh hey thank you for getting back to me I appreciate that I'm not trying to disrespect you or anything I don't mean to sound like that I just can't explain stuff very well I just I've had better luck with gas engine bikes that's all
In the end you looked like an Ewok flying through the forest on that e-bike. That looks like so much fun.
