Actually, in all fairness, the Ash character was kinda split between Mia and her brother. They chose to go for Mia at the end because everyone would expect them to make an Ash-character out of her brother.
Okay, so you didn't pay attention to the film. Ash was a very flawed character at the beginning and came out much stronger, overcoming his fears (even if that meant losing his friends). Mia was never evil in the movie either, she was possessed. That evil thing was NOT her. Was Reagan ever evil in The Exorcist? Was Emily Rose ever evil in The Exorcism of Emily Rose? No, they were VICTIMS. And yes, they're planning a crossover between the original series and the reboots.
