    my-store-11461...
    In this video Maxx discusses what type of footwear you should consider for larp and shows you how to make a simple pair of great looking boots for your costume or kit for under $50. These boots are consider basically unisex, and gaiters come in different sizes, so this should work no matter who you are or what size you are.
    There certainly are games where you will want to spend $500 on a pair of custom handmade period-accurate shoes or boots. But for every other game, not required! If you play a very active game involving hiking, running, jumping, walking in water, mud, snow, ice or have foot problems, then welcome to the future! For any game that doesn't enforce period accuracy, then footwear is a great place to save some money, but still get an excellent piece of gear that functions well, yet can be camouflaged to still look the part.
    I start with a cheap pair of waterproof non-steel toe work boots from a local store. To that I add dye, spray paint, add elastic shoelaces to and finally topped with a surplus leather gaiter to create a fantastic boot look for under $50 and will last a long time, and can still be worn daily.
    The best thing about this type of footwear, is versatility. These can step right out of a medieval fantasy battlefield, off a motorcycle in a modern day vampire horror game, on a human face forever in a dystopian future, or on the deck of a starship lost in deep space.

    If this was already mentioned, I'm sorry. But, if someone still thinks that the waterproof is gonna suffer from the dye, I got good news for you. The waterproofing doesn't come from the suede, it's some sort of lining between the layers (i.e. goretex and such) that makes it waterproof. Suede is just the icing on the cake ;)

    • @nyetloki
      @nyetloki 3 роки тому

      Depends. Cheap boots use a spray repellent not goretex. And even goretex requires reapplication of waterproofing in a few years. Any 4 sesson motorcycle rider can tell you that. Now would the dye affect it? Maybe. But you can apply waterproofing over the dye afterwards. A bottle of 509 would be simple.

    Just the tutorial I needed. A few friends and I are planning what will most likely be a one-off event, and my costume boots that I bought for a basic ren faire costume aren't going to cut it. While I'm probably not going to buy brand new work boots, (y'know, being a teenager with a threadbare budget) this method will still be handy.

      Just search for surplus swiss military gaiters online, they can be had for anywhere from $5 a pair to $20 a pair, depending on where you buy, so shop around.

    An other option that might work (I didn't try yet) is to look for cheap riding boots. I found some fake leather ones on eBay for about 25 Euros. All you have to do is to hide a zipper by glueing on a piece of leather and maybe add some straps to give the impression of something holding the shoe tight. I would stay away from high boots and it's surely a bit depending on available models....

    You're not using the dye applicator right. Shake it up, then keep pressing it until the dye starts flowing through the nib, then you just run it over it. The end result comes out better and makes far less of a mess around you.

    Thanks for the awesome vids! So much more approachable then a lot of the stuff out there. Question - you have a video on Rogue Walking, stealthy armors, how to make boots... do you have any thoughts on how to make specifically stealthy fantasy-larp footwear? Survival Lilly talks about how helpful shoes with flexibility are (she recommends New Balance Minimus Trail Running Shoes as an example) but those are very... not-boot-like I guess. Any conversion tips for them to make them more medievaly? (I know you're able to sneak in regular boots too but if we're not that good at sneakiness yet every little bit might help...) Or should I just stick to boots and get better at sneaking?

    • @LarpMix
      @LarpMix  6 років тому +2

      :) I'm glad you asked because I am going to cover a similar topic in a video in the near future. I'm also glad you mentioned Survival Lilly, she has a great channel. Any of those like articulated style running shoes, or like the Vibram FiveFingers toe shoes are going to be amazing to do this in, but not practical for larp conditions. The best thing you can do with straight up running shoes is to make a thin leather cover for them and maybe wear a lightweight gaiter over them. I have plans to make a video on this topic also, but it's not on my short list, so it could be a few months. Keep an eye out, maybe I'll try to bump that video up the list for you.

  • @Ianwrym

    I actually have those exact boots and gaiters for the larp I attend in NC. My only issue is that either the gaiter is too narrow at the bottom width-wise, or my boot itself is just too broad on the sides, so they don't really come together very well. Tbh I might've actually bought the taller hiking boots and that's why it's not working as well. Meh. Least the front lip pads my dwarven greaves pretty well, so I don't end up with bruised ankles. xD

    • @LarpMix
      @LarpMix  6 років тому

      That's interesting, I don't have any trouble with mine... The gaiters probably wouldn't work with the higher boots, that's why I get the low ones. Maybe that's the issue.

    • @Ianwrym
      @Ianwrym 6 років тому +1

      So, I went back and took another look at my Hiking Boots. Turns out they're from Ozark Trail instead of Brahma, and the sides are WAY thicker than the Brahmas you were using. So yeah, bit of an oversight on my end. My bad!

    • @LarpMix
      @LarpMix  6 років тому

      No problem, I'd suggest next time picking up the Brahma's, they fit perfect with the gaiters. If your hiking boots are a bit too thick, you could always pick up some womens or thin style black belts at a thrift shop and cut little extension pieces to use to allow the gaiters to open wider...

    • @Ianwrym
      @Ianwrym 6 років тому +1

      It's all good. If all else fails, I'll just go grab a pair of the Brahmas and keep my Ozark Trail boots for more General Purpose stuff. Like you said, they're not horribly expensive, so I won't feel too bad dropping a little cash on them.

    Ive got the same Boots and mine have lasted for several years. The only real problem is the inner padding and soles getting worn away. Padding is easily replaced. For the worn out soles im thinking of resoling them with tire tread. Seriously. There's a lot of youtube vids showing how to 'skin' a tire and and use the tread as sandals and shoe/boot soles. The only thing it should cost you us the adhesive and time. You can find tires on the side of the road.

    Are those boots comfortable to run in? If not is there any way you can modify them to make them comfortable to run in? I'm going for a rogue character and naturally I'll need to be on the run a lot, my shoes work just fine for that but they're not what you'd wear ideally...

    • @LarpMix
      @LarpMix  6 років тому +4

      I also play a rogue and have no problems sneaking or running in these boots. Once the inserts wear down, I usually swap out for like a Dr. Scholls insert or something like that to stay comfortable. If you do a serious amount of running though, instead of starting with a "work boot", find a waterproof "hiking boot" instead and use that as your base instead.
