- Hello everyone, here is a short guide to how to put on your Winningas for your early medieval and dark age impressions.
In this video we will cover some great tips I have learned about doing up your winningas that will hopefully help you keep your bindings up all day. I've also included some good and bad examples of winningas to help you. This is just my way of doing the winningas but I find it really effective and they never fall down in the field.
Here is a link to Liz DaBorn who makes really fantastic leg bindings. Drop her a line to get a pair via her Facebook site here:

so, yes...protect the legs. I also propose the idea that they dealt with a medical issue that isn't spoken of. When you're on your feet for hours, as you age, and walking all over....edema. That stretch but bind helps keep the edema out of the legs and improve circulation and helps keep you moving. As a nurse, I've wrapped as you are for the sake of treating edema and lymphedema
Yeah I'd imagine that's a good side effect of it! We had a guy slip over in a sword fight very badly , his ankle twisting with a really painful style. Turned out he had broken his ankle, the doctors at the AandE said because of the bindings it had not become a compound fracture as he was basically wearing a compression bandage already.
As a fellow nurse I concur. Additionally, long sea voyages in a seated position .
It's the same as bandaging basically. As a motorcyclist I've been doing this for years, didn't even know it was historical - I just got sick of taking rocks off my shin bones, had one fracture the bone and break the skin pretty badly so took to leg windings as an easier alternative to half chaps and better in the cold. Although I use material that blends in not stands out, most people wouldn't even notice. I've had some people think they were part of my boots.
That is super cool!
Makes sense!
What do you use ? Do you bandage above or under your trousers?
I know this is old but honest question: does that chafe against your leg hair? Or do you shave to avoid that issue?
@@LinkinMark1994 They wrap over your socks and pant legs. They do not wrap directly on bare skin.
Having had a physical therapist tape my arches before, I imagine this does the same thing for fallen arches. So many advantages to these.
Greatest garment in history!
If you turn your roll over so the binding comes off the top instead of the bottom you will have more control of the roll. ! am a first aider with about 25 years experience. It makes a big difference. Less likely to have to chase the roll across the room and having to start over.
20 years of putting puttees and leg bindings on and off and i wind em up and back different ways every time. Never had a problem either way.
I expect doing it for first aid it actually matters though!
You are Brilliant for doing this video. I'm a 6' tall woman that does weight lifting and heavy fighting in the SCA. I've only been wearing winnegas for two months and have been having a huge problem with stepping and finding bindings long enough for me. I now have a set that is 13 ft long and I love them so much I even wear them during mundane life now.
Rainey R. Robertson they are literally my favourite garment from history. Best thing invented ever! Hope this video has cured stepping for you! :)
brilliant art on that shield there!
From the wonderful Black Forest Forge art. Its a pure fantasy piece, but such a lovely thing!
never knew someone would tell me the right way of doing legbindings here.
good show

Early medival clothing is so cool and practical. I wonder why we stopped using those things.
To be fair, militarily they were used up until the 1980's, and a lot of modern hikers are returning to them. Become a part of a new trend! Wear Winningas! :D
Man, you're worth your weight in gold! Thank you very much for this great video!
Thank you very kindly!
Good ol' Mike givin' a teach on how to properly bind ye goddamn winnigas - Good video Mike! Ordinarily people just show "how to do it" and not, "how not to do it", but teaching both things are very important so that people get the full understanding! ;)
I feel like i could go on and bind some winningas without my inexperience showing, too much in the bind - Thanks again for the video!
Thanks for the comments! :)
Thanks Mike: very clear instructions. Hope to see you soon!
Excellent video. I've had issues with my winnegas stepping and falling down.
great video I like the fact that you don't have to have wraps on but I like them because it adds authentication to the kit
Super informative and very helpful!! Thank you so much for including info. on common pitfalls and examples of how NOT to do things so that we can avoid them :) I am excited to put my winingas to the test!
Thank you Mike you have really solved my problems of this! I've done ww1 before and have always done it the cavarly way from top to bottom, could never understand how to do the bottom to top. But now I know the putties were crap lol. Starring to do 1066 period and around that so this will come in handy as I have got big calf mussels! So thank you, you absolute legend!! 😄🙏
Really good tutorial! Thanks!
This helped me a ton. Thanks!
Thanks Mike. That was so useful. You are a great presenter. You covered every angle (and saxon) at a nice pace and very clearly. It was like I was back on the parade ground being instructed by the colour sergeant :o)
Thanks matey! That really has made my day!

Thank you kindly!
Thanks Mike: have just tried my winingas and new Viking boots on for the first time and your system works very well!
Fantastic! Glad it worked!
I got some wool ones from Germany for my Viking cosplay/ Norse wedding attire. I've struggled getting them to stay put. Thank you for this video
The twisting is brilliant - I was gifted some like the brown style and had real trouble with stepping. This really helps. Thank you. My wife and I are in the SCA but our wardrobe was done by a lady in Regia who helped us put it together to do an all early English reign. Great stuff on this video.
Fantastic! Really glad its helped you!
Very informative! Thank you for posting this!

Nice. I have been fighting my bindings pretty much since i got them and always wondered what i was doing wrong. As im typing this i have, of cause misplaced them, but i cant wait to try out your tips. Thanks for the information :)
Good luck! Hope it works :)
Great video, very helpful. Cheers
Invaluable video! I've struggled with stepping and wondering whether they were long enough in the first place so this has definitely given me all the right methods to troubleshoot those issues right away!
Glad its helped! :)
More than I realised. I've turned into a real winningas snob now! Although it's making it hard to find somewhere quality to buy a pair from seeing as I don't get to markets very often and can't obviously test them out over tinterweb!
The twist! Thank you! I just got wool felt winingas and tried to solve that stepping bs. Thanks a lot. And why on earth didn't I think of that before....
Fantastic that its wrked!
Thanks so much. I was having issues with stepping and Jimmy from Thewelshviking referred me to this video, huge help.
Cracking! Jimmys an old mate of mine!

Best video ever!! Thank you
Thanks!
Interesting and educational
Thank you!
My grandfather used them during Word War I
Oooh I’d wondered the purpose of those. Guess that’s why the pirates in Scooby Doo on Zombie Island had wraps
This is officially the most left field use of winningas I have heard and absolutely Kudos to you for it!
Interesting. For the herringbone pair I have, to avoid the stepping I wrap them diagonally around the calf. Everyone I've seen that goes straight around get the stepping effect. I also use garment hooks. Yeah, they will tear up the top band area after a while. I just hook it to my pants. No issue if everything is tight and snug.
Whatever is working and makes it tight! :)
Great video! Will receive my first bindings and the rest of my viking outfit this week. Still need shoes though. Where are your shoes from? They look beautiful!
They are from Andy Burke who scaled up the Hedeby laced shoes (which are for either someone with small feet... or a child). He's a superb cobbler!
This is very informative! I have an idea for the crummy leg bindings- would make excellent bandages for splints, arm slings etc! Maybe I should try this for shin splints! I remember having to get taped with athletic tape when running track. It was brutal! Can you run with these?
I run with them all the time, so give it a go and tell us if it helps with your splints! :)
Doing a post-apocalyptic photo shoot. Choosing an eclectic mix of costume pieces across time periods and geography to represent the chaos of the time. I thought leg bindings would be the perfect answer to the low technology era but I had no idea how to wrap them. My legs are wide, but have no defined calf muscle, so everything--and I mean EVERYTHING --falls down. Thanks for this video. You explained a lot of the reasons why this would happen and how to deal with it. Thank you so much!
I've done post apoc stuff before, and I have always used leg bindings. THEY ARE THE BEST EVAAARRRRR
@@TwoMikesProductions Oh, and by the way--Linen doesn't stretch EXCEPT when you cut it on the BIAS. Cut it on the bias and you get all the stretch you need. Since linen was the easiest to come by--and cheapest--material ancient warriors might have had on hand, don't you suppose that's what they might have done?
I'm experimenting with a large-ish (2 yards) piece of leftover cabbage. Are you interested in the outcome?
@@DannyJane. linen takes a lot longer to work with than wool. Wool is by far the more used substance during the early medieval period. It's also our largest trade resource, it also spins and works a lot easier than linen.
@@TwoMikesProductions Point taken. But I didn't have any wool. I did have linen. See, this is Texas, and on February 4 (the event is on the 8th) it's 72 degrees out. This is winter, Houston-style. Linen leg wraps vs. heatstroke.
Thanks, though. Really.
@@DannyJane. Man... I cannot even begin to imagine the heat of Texas.
I will say though, wool does a better job of breathing than linen as wool dissapates both heat and sweat much faster than linen. Linen quickly gets sweaty and makes you feel uncomfortable as with other plant fibres (easiest way to think about it is think Denim when you are on a hot July day in Houston in jeans. Its gross isnt it).
The wool available to them would be of incredible quality as well, spun much finer than we imagine (They werent using chunky twill stuff) so it would be super effective at it.
If it gets really hot though, manuscripts show people removing their trousers and legbindings completely rather than changing to linen basically.
I watch this every year before the first convention since it came out XD
Fantastic! High praise!
Dang, I wish I would have seen this vid a year ago. Would have spared me A LOT of work and money. *sad cries* But thanks for showing us how and how not to do and what and what not to use.
Thanks for watching!
The stuff about nettles and especially dreaded gause is real
During RM training they would not allow the use of gators due to them “looking unprofessional” and we must have had at least one lad every ex go down from infections from the hundreds of gause pricks we were getting going thru it
Now imagining an England that was much more wild and no access to antiseptic they would have literally been a life saver
Not to mention tight wet garments are so much warmer than loose wet garments
Absolutely nail on the head. Infection from small injury in a time without treatment could be potentially lethal. Not everyone is wearing these but I’d be willing wager anyone who works in the field or the woodland is wearing them for protection. This gets backed up by the various calendar paintings and late Roman images of field hunts in the woodland where the are explicitly wearing tight fitting puttees basically.
Thanks for the comment!
I noticed that Clanadonia the Scottish Tribal Band wears some kind of Plaid leg wrappings and you are the only one on UA-cam that I've seen that explains how to wrap them, I wear a great kilt most of the time but have no luck with hose because of my big legs, (I'm 6ft 6in) I would like to wrap my legs with plaid but I'm not sure how or if plaid is right.
Plaid leg wraps sound super snazzy. I've seen french shooter's wear them before , you could get some 12foot long stuff in plaid which is naturally stretchy and that could work
This video helped so goddamn much.
Glad to be a help! Share with your other mates and become 'that guy' who talks about leg bindings all the time!
Thank you! This will help me nail our dressing up day with my class - we may be "only" in Key Stage 2, but we're going for it properly! 😂
Excellent! Have a great day !
Hey, Mike! Excellent video. I've been doing Norse-ish re-enactment with my local re-enactment group out here in the PNW of the USA. I've been relying on penanular pins to keep them in place up top, but your video was great with demonstrating going around the foot and the proper way to tuck them at the top. I can't wait to try this method out.
BUT, I wanted to ask you about *arm* winnningas. I have a more narrow set that are designed to be used as arm winningas to cover the forearms. I REALLY like them, they're excellently made wool ones that match my leg wraps, made of wool. But the problem I'm having is that they constantly come loose and undone, both at the wrist and the elbow. (I actually have a hard time with bracers as well, but, that's a different story.)
Do you have any experience with arm winningas/wraps? Any tips or tricks to get these tight enough to stay put all day long without cutting off blood circulation to my hands? I've searched everywhere online and on UA-cam and no one offers a great demonstration of how these work reliably.
I've only ever seen evidence of them in Russia, but I'll have a go and see what I can. Do!
@@TwoMikesProductions Awesome! Thank you so much. They're super versatile to offer a bit more temperature and comfort control with short or 3/4 length tunic sleeves (especially when a day fluctuates wildly between chilly and hot), or even protection in the brush. I just wish I could get the things to stay put. I look forward to seeing whatever you find out!

Was wondering about the best way to keep these expensive compression socks I had to buy for edema protected while I trudge through the thorn and tick filled trails. Perhaps some well wound puttees would be the way to go!!!
Cheap and effective! I wear them on hikes regularly!
Child picture is cool.
Did you buy or make those pants? If you made them, would you make a video about how you did it? If you bought it, would you link the company or site?
These were made by Lutas Linen Chest, check her out on facebook. She's amazing.
Was that one of the things that was completely functional or were there fashionable leg bindings or ways to do leg bindings?
(I was thinking that while you were fixing the stepping...I could picture someone doing extra flips just to look a little more flare to his uniform.)
There are some manuscripts that show particularly snazzy leg bindings with embroidery on them as well. :)
Hey Mike, can you explain your comment on leg wraps with Viking baggy pants a bit more? I’ve just invested in a pair of baggy pants for a new kit, but I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “drain pipe system” to keep the wrappings from falling. What does this look like and how might one acquire them? I’d be bummed to rock up to an event only to have my wrappings keep falling. Thanks!
Liam Waters hi Liam! Owing to the fact UA-cam doesn’t let pics in its comments, I’m going to try and describe it :D
Basically a drainpipe system onnthe baggies is where instead of the trouserleg being made of one massive tube, meaning you would have to gather loads of material up causing your winningas to not fit properly, basically you have the main trouser which is super baggy and often pleated. This comes to just below the knee. From the knee down it’s an additional attached piece of the garment which clings tight to your calf thus reducing the material under the winningas making it much less likely to fall down.
I really hope I have done that justice!
Mike Everest super helpful, thank you! The trousers I’ve acquired do not have such an attached piece with them. Do you have any recommendations to troubleshoot that issue? I’m assuming that putting the wrappings over bare skin isn’t effective.
@@liamh2os wrapping over bare skin can be effective, I do that for romans, but it requires a tight bind and importantly it really needs to be the cloth style that I show in the video to give it grip.
However, dont take the shears to the strides just yet! These things are all fixable. Try first without any alteration, it may work well. If thats not working well, take a slice out the back of the trouser from ankle to just under knee and bring it in with some clever stitching.
If in doubt, chuck us a pic on my 'portals to the past - mike' page on FB and I'll have a look for ya. :)
1:17 my man where did you get that shield OMG😍😍
Gorgeous isnt it! Its from Black Forest Forge. Its a planked and hand drawn shield. A work of beautiful fantasy from a great artist. You can follow them on Facebook. :)
Is there a video on how to do this with shorter, baggy norse/rus pants without pant fabric over the calves?
Apply the winningas directly to the skin running them all the way up the calf to just beneath the knee. Is there fabric on your big baggies anywhere south of the knee or does it stop just there? I cant see there beeing much problem with a tiny gap between top of winningas and bottom of trousers.
Where would you recommend finding the ones you like from Germany? I seen to be unable to find good examples for sale. Thanks!

Mine are copies of the Hedeby boot, scaled up for adults (its actually a kids shoe would you believe!) made by Andy Burke.
As for leather thickness, if you are in the UK and can stomach using the ancient and arcane ways of Leprevo, they will be able to help.
Mike, I have Elisabeth making me a pair of her leg bindings as you highly recommended in this video. Not sure how long it will take her. In the meantime, you mentioned one or two other places that also make great leg wraps. I don't see those shops in your video description. I think you mentioned one in Germany. Can you send me the links so I can also buy a pair or two from them? Thanks in advance!

@@TwoMikesProductions Thanks Mike. I will check it out now. Thanks for the link!
What were you saying about a drainage system when wearing Viking baggies??
Drainpipe baggies. Basically they are baggy to about the knee, then they become really tight down to to the ankle (hence drainpipes) and that means you can wrap your winningas really nice and neat.
I can't see any links for the German suppliers you mentioned at the beginning of the video, only the lady with an Etsy shop, who doesn't have any listed at the moment.

Is the weave in the bands necessary for the fabric to strech and wrsp around? Are other weaves besides twill weaves useable? Are the bands able to be cut and hemmed from yardage or do they need to be woven in that width?
Gotta be woven to width. I've seen leg bindings made from cut off of regular cloth and they simply dont work as well. They look sloppy and incorrect. Also, a thousand years ago, they would have woven them to the exact width. No need for them to make a bunch of cloth and then cut the side off.
@@TwoMikesProductions thanks for the reply! Im not a reenacter, I was looking to use up some wool scraps and like to wear corset stlye lace up leggings when i bike and thought i might give it s go. I do know tablet weaving from making a guitarr strap once, if i find enough woll at the 2nd hand shop il give it a go for sure thanks. In sewing, having the weave diagnal helps fabrick strech around curves its called cutting on the bias, but the second strip of wool looked like it might not have that elastic weave to it. Thanks again!
@@tinnerste2507 Tablet Weave Guitar Strap sounds amazing!
I've tried with cloth cut on the bias, you could make a bit of a go with it, but would need rolling twists in the wrapping to make it work properly I think.
Good luck!
No matter how often i try, i can´t make it without stepping, even when i twist it. Is it maybe because my winnegas are made out of wool felt and not pure wool?
And where is the link for the ones you bought from germany, respectively whats the brand/shop? Thank you
It will be the weave for sure I reckon!
been trying out my pair of leg wraps from grimfrost. a tad too short and frays after only a few uses. i need to purchase some better ones.
Etsy now has loads of really good suppliers on there, and affordable too.
yeah i actually picked up some feaux fur leg warmers from over there.
@@Wartooth91 I'll be honest i wouldn't buy anything from grimfrost. They make T-shirts rather than anythong of note to wear for living history purposes. All of their stuff is heavily fantasy inspired and not very suitable for re-enactment.
@@TwoMikesProductions I'm mostly just getting together a kit for renaissance festivals once this whole pandemic is over and safe. But finding decent quality for that can still be an issue even if it is a bit anachronistic.

Andy Burke Historic shoes :)
If an individual wanted to use a leg wrap for a purely functional purpose like hiking, (not related to re-enactment) are puttees and winningas equally suited? They would seem to be.
I wonder the same thing. I heard from Chinese WWII veterans that their leg wrappings helped immensely with long marches as it gave the legs a lot of support.
They absolutely are sir. I do regular hikes with puttees or Winningas on. Good support and good for protecting your lower legs.
Give it a go and tell us what you reckon.
As an Aside, Fox, who made them for officers in the great war, made them for shotgun shooters. I still do this.
I made a set of my own for larp and didn't realize the texture was the reason they were falling
Once you clock it you suddenly realise! IHope you have luck with new ones!
what length recommendation would you have for someone 6 ft tall with long skinny legs?
9 feet. Just make the twists a little closer, :)
interesting video ty! so leg bindings = migration era chaps?? neat!
You are welcome! :)
Could you use that 6 foot roll as a cloth belt?
Its very poor quality, so i'd avoid it. I've actually used it for cleaning equipment for swords/rifles etc. :)
May i ask where you bought your Winningas ? i heard you mentioned a German company in the video
Yeah when the video came out there were some german companies, now there are loads on ETSY well worth your time

ohkay
what shoes are those, wear can i get some?
They are scaled up versions of the Hedeby boot (which is actually a childs pair of shoes) and I had them made by Andy Burke in the UK. They are expensive but the quality is exceptional.
Could i wear winnigas with hosen?
Absolutely yes. There are a couple of manuscripts that show it, including the wall friezes at Clayton Church (Recroded in the Domesday book, but constructed and painted in the early 11th century).
is this also a kind of armor?
Against stinging nettles and brambles... but anything with a bladed edge and intent to slash would go through this with ease. Even bound with this many layers. You need a LOT of cloth to bind a sword blow (Linothorax for example, if made from Linen would have been something like 40 layers)
i see your luddite field is so strong it almost affected the garment binder
The luddite field is a terrifyingly powerful
How can one get a decent pair of winningas for a relatively good price - or make them? Most of the ones I've seen are pretty expensive, and I dont have enough economic independence to purchase them. I could, but that would mean not getting other things.
Its worth waiting and not rushing in re-enactment. Good kit is always worth getting. In my experience, unless you can weave properly (a skill that takes a long time to learn) then it is worth buying good quality leg bindings and making the rest of your kit. You can buy a very good pair for between 30 and 40 pounds quite readily available now at a lot of re-enactment markets or on the links I have on the vid.
Good luck on your re-enactment journey!
Whoa those leather shoes are impressive, seriously where'd you get those?
From Andy Burke Historical Shoes. He is my favourite period cobbler!
Mike Everest ey thanks Mike!
The ones you're wearing don't appear to be on his site any more. Are they based on one of the Hedeby finds? Or an Anglo-Saxon pattern?
Hi Richard, he did them custom. They are scaled up hedeby finds (the actual hedeby boot is a childs shoe apparently. But I had them scaled up. They are super durable)
Where did you get your tunic?
My wife made this one, but most of the tunics I wear are from Lutas Linen Chest. She's amazing
Can I make those out of Cotton?
You can try, but I'd say cotton is less stretchy and without the weave required to bind them properly . Wool will always be the best
Got directed here while researching Russian peasant leg bands.Who knew?
What type of boots are those ?
They are a scaled up interpretation of the Hedeby boot (with laces. Vikings tended to use laces and saxons tended to use toggles in the broadest possible generalisation). The hedeby boots are actually kids shoes though! :D
Where did you get those shoes
Andy Burke historical shoes. Superb shoemaker

Can you wrap your thighs as well to help protect against the cold?
You would have to have so much material and I think the the amount movement your thigh muscles do it simply wouldnt work. I've never seen any historical evidence of them doing it so i'd hazard a guess at no. I think as you are wearing hose or trousers etc and thigh length tunics its going to help.
@@TwoMikesProductions understood. Thanks for the response.
Mine just glide down all the time, any quick tips?
What material are you using?
Mike Everest recycled wool materials.
Hmm. It'll be the weave then thats causing it to fall. If you have cut them from strips of cloth rather than having them woven for the job then you wont get them to stay up without doing a twist every now and then.
Mike Everest they were purchased as leg wraps just that the material is recycled but will try spinning it as the material is rather stiff! Thanks! :)
Cool. In the middle of the video it talks about doing the twist. Skip to the bit with the Brown leg wraps. :)

Yeah it is assumed they are wearing something on legs, and I believe there are manuscripts depicting such for women. Jimmy the Welsh Viking talks about it in his winingas wideo as well. :)
Just checked, Gayle Owen Crocker writes about it in her book on Anglo Saxon women and believes that yes they were, and she supports that with manuscript evidence. Good enough for me!
Nice video but please stop saying Okay so much.
