I honestly love my Criterion Collection and subscribe to the streaming service. I feel like I can pick anything from the Collection and at the minimum it is worth watching if not fantastic!
I've been contemplating buying 24 Frames, and will definitively do it now. I remember loving Heart of a Dog when I saw it at a film festival in 2016, and also Safe is a terrific movie I've seen several times. Thank you for reminding me of these films!
Great Video! WANDA and Kiarostami's CLOSE-UP are a couple of films that more moviegoers should go see! Allan King's A MARRIED COUPLE is also pretty amazing! Thanks!
Nice vid. I agree with SAFE. Such an interesting film. I LOVE Heart of a Dog! 24 frames is really stunning. Another one not too many talk about is Personal Shopper.
Great video, Dave. There are so many gems in the Criterion Collection and many are underrated. You've brought so many of them to my wishlist and collection. I really enjoyed Fishing With John, a recommendation from you. Safe is a fantastic film that deserves so much more attention. Heart Of A Dog really helped me when my Autumn passed. It's such a beautiful mix of life events, pets, and Buddhist thinking. I've added even more to my list. Thanks so much, my friend. You're the best. Chat soon. 🥶🥸❄️🍩🍩🎄
Thanks Stephanie. I love showcasing films that may be underrated or not watched enough and these are just a few. Looking forward to the livestream this week. Talk to you soon. 🥶❄🥸🍩
Great shares, Dave! I have only heard of Dinner with Andre. A couple of Criterions I seldom see discussed are also DVD only: Fritz Lang’s The Testament of Dr. Mabuse and Kurosawa’s Stray Dog.
Thanks. I love My Dinner With Andre. The conversation really mesmerizes me and I always gain new insight on life when I watch it - love when a film does that on each viewing. Great underrated films that you mentioned too.
Some underrated films in the Criterion Collection are: I Know Where I’m Going (Michael Powell), Il posto (Ermanno Olmi) and The Baker’s Wife (Marcel Pagnol). Whisky Galore/Tight Little Island by Alexander Mackendrick is underrated as well but I don’t think it’s in the collection.
Dave, thanks for turning me onto some of these film recommendations which I have never heard of in the Criterion collection. Always great to find new discoveries in the collection!
André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films I picked up last year on your recommendation and I absolutely love it! Thank you for that. I mentioned you in the videos I did discussing Vanya on 42nd Street and Drive My Car, as they both deal with Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. You've mentioned liking quieter films during this time of year, so I would highly recommend Drive My Car if you haven't seen it yet. All your recommendations, as always, get immediately added to the wishlist. Great video Dave.
Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed the 3 Films set, it's one of my favorites. I do have Drive My Car which is now higher on my list for viewing after your comment.
Yes, completely makes sense. I typically only pickup Criterion films during the sales so can add a few more each year to my collection. So many good films to watch.
The first time I saw John Lurie was in Jarmusch's Down By Law; a personal favourite film. Fishing With John is wonderful stuff! Vanya on 42nd Street was my first ever Criterion Blu-ray and I love it. The intro of everyone wandering in to the rehearsal and how you're unaware that the play has actually started; wonderful stuff! I don't know the Todd Haynes film so that goes on the wish-list! Kiarostami; genius films. Surely your intro and outro video-shots are inspired by 24 Frames?! At least I think that every time I see it.. Good choices, Sir!
Thanks very much. Down By Law is such a great film and I almost pulled for this video. Glad you enjoyed Vanya on 42nd Street - I also love how they blurred the lines between real life and when/how the play started. Kiarostami is one of my very favorite filmmakers and definitely inspires the intro/outro for my videos.
Good choice got the Andre Gregory films but as separate blurays, Safe is excellent, I would nominate Gomorrah directed by Mattel Gerrone no one mentions it and Babettes Feast from Gabriel Axel and finally More recent Bing Lius Minding the Gap and Tiny the life of Erin Blackwell.
I really like the Criterion release of Local Hero. Not sure if it is underrated, but it is probably my favorite Criterion individual movie release ever. Some of the lesser known Michael Powell films which have not been upgraded from DVD by Criterion are also very good. I would point to 49th Parallel especially, that one is a masterpiece and a truly great movie, but also The Small Back Room and I Know Where I'm Going deserve a blu-ray release from Criterion. Honestly I hope that Michael Powell gets a box set from Criterion like the Fellini or Ingmar Bergman box sets. It's long overdue.
Great list, Dave! For my 5 underrated Criterion films (that are still available) would include Man Bites Dog, The Life Aquatic, The Ice Storm, Make Way for Tomorrow, and either Miller's Crossing or Topsy Turvy. Follow up question for you: what filmmaker did you discover through the Criterion Collection that you've enjoyed the most? For me I would go with Mike Leigh. The first film of his I watched was Naked and I've been hooked on his work ever since (Another Year is my favorite). Hope all is well! Love the Criterion content!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I love your underrated Criterion film list (Make Way For Tomorrow is one of my favorites though a sad film). Mike Leigh is a genius and I think that Naked was the first film I watched in his filmography also. Some of the best filmmakers that I've discovered through the Criterion Collection (difficult to pick just one) are: Kiarostami, Tarkovsky, Ozu, Kieślowski, Bergman, Reichardt, so many.
I’m newer to Criterion (within the last couple years), so love hearing these deeper dives into what’s available in their collection. Thanks
Thanks! Criterion has so many phenomenal film releases to choose from.

when you start Criterion, you cannot stop
@@AlonsoRules So true, I love collecting Criterion films.

24 FRAMES. Excellent highlight. Got to see it in theaters.
Oh wow, I wish I had seen 24 Frames in the theater. It's one of my favorites.
Great Video! WANDA and Kiarostami's CLOSE-UP are a couple of films that more moviegoers should go see! Allan King's A MARRIED COUPLE is also pretty amazing! Thanks!
Thanks. I really like the films you recommended also.
After life and Diabolique are underdog favorites for me. Also, Summer with Monika
Totally agree, great films!
The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, highly recommend it
Nice vid. I agree with SAFE. Such an interesting film. I LOVE Heart of a Dog! 24 frames is really stunning. Another one not too many talk about is Personal Shopper.
Thanks! Totally agree about Personal Shopper which I almost pulled for this video.
@@CinemaDaveMedia Another I love is Secret Sunshine.
Safe is one of my favourite movies. Very happy you highlighted this criterion release. Safe is a must have in any collection.

Very interesting 🎥. Wallace Shawn is one of my favorite people on IMDb.📺
Thanks very much!
@@CinemaDaveMedia You’re welcome 😀
Thanks!
Crazed Fruit is a great film. One of the greatest Japanese films. Underrated ( but not by the French ) and I bought it from Criterion just in time.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
As long as Criterion hold the rights and exists as a company, they'll never go out of print.
So true, thanks!

Recommend Blue Angel 1930. Marlene Dietrich.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Tampopo is a favorite of mine.
Yes, great film.
I just decided to order Christopher Nolan's Following, which I saw several years ago and liked it a lot. It's not one I hear a lot about

I only have a couple of criterion but rest of the time we get the dvd of the film,as they are generally inexpensive any we can upgrade if we like it.

The Sword of Doom - Underrated Samurai movie.
Great film, thanks for mentioning.
Have you seen before the rain? Thats a good one no one ever talks about
Haven't seen that one, thanks for the recommendation.

@@throws89 Oh yes, Buñuel and Akerman too and I forgot to mention Bresson. So many! 😀
Here's a few...
One False Move
Smooth Talk
Mississippi Masala
Purp!e Noon
To Sleep With Anger
Crash
Devil in A Blue Dress
Great films! Thanks!
Dave, have you been clobbered by snow?
Not yet 😀🥶❄️
They edit classic movies. How do you know thats the movie as it was
Ha, Fishing With John was one of my very first Criterions, over 20 years ago. I loved that show. RIP Willem Dafoe.
Fishing With John will always be one of my favorites.
