I am all in favour of wool BUT.... many folk are not, because they hear of the terribly cruel way sheep are shorn, by men who are only interested in speed and not compassion

The men who shear are presumably not cruel people. Their intention is not to harm the sheep. In fact, if they harmed sheep, they'd soon be out of a job.
And if they coddled the sheep as you propose, their efficiency would be curbed. And presumably costs would go up. And then there would be less demand, and less sheep.
So, fewer sheep, or no sheep, would mean no sheep suffer, even by those whose intention is not to harm but just to get the job done. That would not be a good outcome.
Life has painful moments. We try to minimize, even eliminate the pain. At least I do. But as long as I do not create suffering for my animals in order to give myself some kind of perverse overlord pleasure, I think I've hit the right balance.

I think we're talking past each other. The video was about U.S. farms. Confer at 2:24 in the video. There are people who do cruel things in this world, as your link reminds us. I'm not perfect. That shouldn't stop me from trying to act better. And it shouldn't stop people from wearing wool, especially wool from sheep that are raised on farms that treat the land and animals sustainably.

I know. Most of the problems seem to be in Australia - where I guess they have probably the largest population of sheep ? . I was just pointing out that there IS cruelty, when you tended to imply there is not enough to worry about. We should not be complacent but continue to work to ensure that cruelty is wiped out.

I have trouble getting information about how sheep are treated by specific producers. Do you have any resources that name cruelty-free yarn? I am very limited in terms of what companies I buy from and sometimes expand my selection by using synthetic fibers. Which isn't a very good option, I know.
