Oh, here's some fun (aka very sad) Alphys lore for you! After hanging out with Undyne, you can call her and Papyrus in any area of the game to get their commentary on the room. If you call them in the garbage dump, Undyne talks about how she first met Alphys there while Alphys was standing and staring off the edge of the waterfall.
It's heavily implied that Alphys was considering committing suicide here, and Undyne saved her life.
But... if you kill Mettaton or Undyne and reach a neutral ending, Alphys mysteriously goes missing.

Alphys' date is always very funny to me, but it's always difficult to talk about it in depth normally cause of what follows, and with good reason. The True Lab is one of Undertale's darkest moments, reading how an experiment searching for a way to achieve freedom turned so horribly wrong, slowly realizing the amalgamates are multiple dead monsters fused together, understanding how Alphys' psyche worsened so badly, and even having some sweet or really sad moments, So Cold especially hits for me, cause if you pay attention, you realize that's the dead mother of the kid who tells bad jokes in snowdin, his father in the hotel mentioning how she passed away and he ran away from home ever since, it's some really good stuff. Loved seeing you react to all this crazy stuff, it can go from some really goofy stuff to serious out of nowhere and I love that!!

This is going to sound critical, though I don’t mean it that way, but… it’s interesting how, in some cases, your takes on the music were actually deeper when you didn’t have the context. Like, I thought it was super-interesting how you described the lab theme as feeling like aimless, curious wandering, and how you described the amalgamate battle theme as something that sounds almost playful and not malicious (as far as I remember your words). The former is just plain accurate, while the latter is so valid it’s downright incredible!
It’s almost like being in the actual situation made you more constrained to the obvious way the scene makes you feel, like you were (understandably) too freaked out during the battles to feel anything but freaked out and stressed. (Which, again: Not criticism, just an interesting observation on how context or the lack thereof can change your perspective. A meta-observation, if you will!)

      @MarcoMeatball  Рік тому +107

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 Рік тому +119

@@MarcoMeatball I think both are important. Video game music is meant to be listened to in context, but sometimes the context can mislead you. This is, of course, done on purpose. The True Lab is meant to be a scary place, and you're not meant to realize until after the fact that the amalgamates aren't trying to hurt you. If you sleep in the bed for long enough, one will even appear and, after hovering menacingly over you for a moment, will tuck you in. Listening to the music out of context allows you to analyze it without bias, but video games are also gestalt pieces of art meant to be taken as a whole. As with many works of art, gaining new insight can give a new perspective on the same work.
Basically, it's the difference between looking at a specific tree vs. the whole forest. The forest washes out the details of that one tree, while the tree gains new meaning by being a part of the larger forest. Both are worthy of consideration, and only by looking at both can you get a complete picture.
Music in video games is often only a supporting element, meant to add emotional color to whatever the player is already experiencing. As such, most players don't notice the fine details and only remember how they felt, and their enjoyment of a song is more linked to how they felt during that part of the game. Breaking down the music as standalone works of art can reveal how much effort went into crafting a song to enhance or produce that emotion, and how they're often deliberately downplayed so they don't draw attention away from the larger experience the game is trying to convey. That's not an easy task, and it often goes unnoticed and unappreciated, despite how crucial of a role it plays.

That vocal sound in the True Lab's area theme and battle theme (heard at 15:35 and 17:21 for example) is a sample from Earthbound's "Cave of the Past" theme. And the Cave of the Past's sound itself is actually sampled from the first couple seconds of Deirdre by the Beach Boys.

the story of the true lab is a very...weird one. mostly because theres a puzzle peice that was intentionally left missing, and still hasnt been fed to us to this very day. lol. ill spoil some of his backstory, mostly because he's sorta a "side dish" its stuff you don't NEED to know to enjoy the game, and you can go the entire game without any sort of knowledge of him and doesn't really influence much in the actual story, except maybe piecing ONE peice of dialog that hints to gaster's existance in the genocide route, if you decide to tackle that(which i recommend you do or at least watch a playthrough, as its got a LOT of lore you will miss out on and puts some things into context).
you don't really spot it, but its hinted heavily in the game that there is a "missing link" connected to the true lab. theres a bunch of theories, but the "facts" we have of this, is there was once ANOTHER royal scientist, his name was W.D. Gaster, wd stands for wing dings, and he speaks in such a font just like sans and papyrus, which are both linked to gaster in one way or another as they "just appeared out of nowhere" in snowdin and made themselves at home and the obvious font similarities, especially since sans' alternate font where you dont hear his goofy "ehehehehehe" is the font "Aster". gaster eventually died, falling into "his own creation"(that giant mechanical machine you see in the background of the CORE? yeah, thats one of his creations, idk if its the one that he fell into though), which somehow caused the entire storyline to warp around, completely erasing himself from existance in the story entirely regardless on resets. he MAYBE actually has a chance to appear in the game, its a rare event in the waterfalls, but we aren't fully sure if thats gaster or not, but the community has basically canonicalized him as the face of gaster.
the rest is spoiler territory so ill hold off on that. but yeah, this all happens and its stuff you would NEVER find unless you fiddle through the code or get lucky.
(also congrats on your role in genshin, i just started watching you recently, and to hear you are now voicing a character in a game i play is crazy lol)

The music on all of the three hangouts/dates you did kind of display the stuff that happens in the occasions. Papyrus' date is totally filled with a happy tune indicating the playful friendly interaction you have with him, sprinkled with some tense and hard-hitting tunes to show Papyrus' hyperactive nature.
Undyne's hangout follows the same "Dating start" theme to indicate the friendliness, however you get some "memory " in there to help you understand how good Undyne really is at heart outside of her battling persona. Then, of course you get spear of justice in there at the cooking course and following that, because she also is now hyperactive and overexcited to cook and fight with you.
Alphys, as you said, is totally awkward. Her own theme is awkward-sounding, "dating tense" drops in to amplify the tension during the Undyne section, "Confession" is brought in to emotionally heighten Alphys' confession, "Spear of Justice" of course shows Undyne's straightforward nature , and the tempo modifications are to indicate confusion and insanity.

The fact that all the items are for Undyne make this scene even better when combined with her clear social awkwardness.
The situation in the garbage dump just makes things so much funnier, especially as you see that both Undyne and Alphys have no idea how to do this sort of thing. One has been too obsessed with science, the other too obsessed with being a royal guard. And then Alphys dumps the heavy thoughts about low self-image on me, which was pretty heavy for me, too, since I had low self-image when I first played this game. My friends understood how I was feeling, even if this interaction is supposed to be a little silly.
And as the roleplay on how to tell Undyne the truth goes out of hand, I'm giggling at the music and Alphys, and of course my comical voice for her is wavering along with the text in the box. Yes, I was still doing my comical voices. But then Undyne; my reaction was "oh, shit."
Then Alphys admits all her lies, Undyne gets a three-pointer in the trash can, and Undyne gives the biggest "reasons why you rock" speech to Alphys. Hit home for me, too. Undyne then goes further, says she'll help Alphys like herself, and I'm rocking on to Spear of Justice...and Papyrus shows. I know you seem to have a - let's say contentious relationship? - with Papyrus, but I love the guy. So I get to say my best voice (Papyrus and Asgore were my two best voices according to my friends) and watch as he and Alphys go to train...and then Undyne starts melting down. By the way, I told her anime wasn't real, keeping up with the whole tell Undyne the truth shtick.
I get told to go back to the lab by the precious cinnabone boi, then read that note that felt very much like the types of notes people who seek a permanent end to temporary problems write. I panicked; I thought Alphys was going to do something way too drastic, so I immediately headed into the door. Then I read the entries, and entry 5...when she called it the will to live and the power to change fate, the sinking feeling in my stomach got heavy...and I said "Determination" before even moving onto that line. The realization that the save points function because the player soul has so much determination, and that's why even resets work, was a fucking explosion in my head.
And then the encounters with the various Amalgamates created from injecting determination into monsters that are comatose and dying occurred, along with Alphys' hopeful journals as these monsters started waking up...before bad things happened again. That was...hard, because many of them are extremely poignant references when you know the backstories of other monsters in the underground. Like the Amalgamate that was a combination of a few different people and is Shyren's sister, the Amalgamate made up of dogs that are related to Dogamy, Dogaressa, and the rest of the dogs from Snowdin, or the Amalgamate that is outright called Snowdrake's Mother. It shows that monsters can't handle determination...at least...not normal monsters.
Stumbling upon the VHS tapes was even worse. Home videos from Tori and Gorey...of course, I knew this was Toriel and Asgore when they were about to have their child. It hit worse because I knew he was already dead from the story in New Home. They only get more creepy when some unknown monster in the videos refers to my name in the VHS. And the implication of the videos only gets worse; the human child from the story for some reason has my name, and intentionally got themselves sick with buttercup flowers, in an attempt go through the barrier and get souls to free the monsters...along with Asriel.
Finally, that weird machine? Looks familiar, doesn't it? I had figured it out; that determination extraction machine is part of the body of Photoshop Flowey. And things were starting to make a lot more sense. A sense I didn't like.

True Lab is not a happy place, and the music plays off it well by using battle music with strange, frantic, distorted sounds, and exploration music that is discordant and eerie, but driven. You're here to find a missing friend, and you're pushing through the terrors.

One thing to note about both Alphys' theme and Here We Are (the song that plays in True Lab):
First of all Alphys' switches between a 5/4 and 3/4 time signature throughout the song. The feel with the chords is to give that "i'm an anime nerd" vibe and the melody is supposed to be "but i'm also kinda really dang smart too."
Here We Are is a slowed down, darker version of Alphys and also switches back and forth between 5/4 and 3/4 further proving this. The song placement in the story isn't just spooky atmosphere. It represents the guilt Alphys feels from the creations she's made inside True Lab with the experiments with determination.
TL;DR: Toby is a musical genius and uses funny time signatures to show character personality as well as lore connections.

    Fun facts:

    - There is a vending machine in the lab that sells you food for healing

The amalgamations....it really made me look at Alphys' character differently. Like, not liking the real you, and questioning if an unhappy truth is better than a happy lie is way too relatable. But her secrets go beyond nerdy insecurities as we've now found out.
Notice the golden flowers in the lab AND that the determination extraction machine looks a bit like the flowey boss fight from earlier.

Youre totally right in the assessment of how Undyne's theme is being used here in the date, and undyne's theme is often said to describe "determination" which is the in universe power that lets you reload save files (i e being 'determined' to continue because the game breaks the 4th wall and recognizes the player so like literally if you the player are not 'determined' the pc will not come back, p cool imo, and the save/load system are canonical timeline shifts) she's the only monster who resists insta death through being determined which you would see if you killed her in a Neutral run of the game (i think you said you did that? yeah she doesnt insta dissolve), so yeah that song playing when shes accepting alphys isnt just 'oh its her character theme' its the determination, the faith and belief undyne has that alphys is good. aww.
And yeah the True Lab is freakin Creepy.
There’s several story elements that appear here that are hard to understand without several plays or external elements, it’s up to you if ya want them fully explained or not

SPOIL AGAIN (tho if you opened the comments I feel like u agreed to it)
I also love so much that at this point it’s basically impossible to lose undertale. Actually it’s basically impossible to lose undertale once you get to the omega flowey/photoshop flowey fight. Toby is a master at designing fights specifically so that they don’t feel easy but also so that you can’t really lose them either so long as you give it a good try. I mean the flowey fight saves every time you beat one of the segments so as long as you beat one every few tries you can beat the whole thing in a couple dozen attempts. You can beat the normal or pacifist route of undertale with not that much effort as long as you don’t really suck at games and even if you do you still could eventually.
So, essentially, anyone can finish this game in the neutral or pacifist run, even with the least game skill so long as they have the ‘determination’
As a person who is bad at games this is important to me

Welcome to the dark secret of Alphys!
By the way, I noticed that you didn't understand what happened on the VHS, and no wonder, this is still a theory hole for the fandom, if you remember the story of how Asriel died and caused Asgore to started to collect human souls, it is more easy to unravel, but if you don't get it I will explain it here:
(WARNING: ALL THIS IS NOT SPOILER BUT YOU CAN GET HERE THEORIZING, IN CASE YOU LOVE FIGURING IT OUT FOR YOURSELF I WARN YOU... IF NOT, KEEP READING TO KNOW "WHAT REALLY HAPPENED BETWEEN ASRIEL AND "MARCO"")
Do you remember that the first human that fell was rescued and adopted by Asriel's family?
Well, they has the same name as you!
Why? I'm sorry, but that's a spoiler, I already told you that on this route they explain the complete secret story to you; ).
But what I can tell you is that by accident Asriel and "Marco" poisoned Asgore by making him a cake that had buttercup flowers (Ranunculus (All those yellow flowers at the beginning of the game and Flowey (They're poisonous))) by confusing them with buttercup cake lol, luckily Asgore recovered but for some reason that interested "Marco".
"Marco" proposes a plan to Asriel to save all the monsters, but Asriel is horrified and cries, and "Marco" convinces him by calling him crybaby and that if they succeed they will save everyone.
    ...
"Marco" becomes horribly ill, and while Asgore and Toriel plead with "Marco" to hang on and survive, Asriel tries to convince "Marco" to stop this plan, but "Marco" reminds him to stick to the plan, and not to forget collect the "other six".
    ...(Do you remember this?)
"The sick human had only one request."
"To see the flowers from their village."
"But there was nothing we could do."
    "The next day..."
    ...
    "The human died"
"ASRIEL, wracked with grief, absorbed the human´s SOUL."
"He transformed into a being with incredible power."
"With the human SOUL, ASRIEL crossed through the barrier."
    ...
I admit I've left out details, but because it's more fun to find out for yourself, if you're curious about the other details, I can tell you, but I'll just leave like this.
And yep, UNDERTALE has a secret super dark side.
    Enjoy the game ; ) ; ) ; )

Things you didn't pick up on:
    1. The chords from the lab theme's A section follow the melody of Alphys's theme, all minor chords moving in parallel along the melody with all notes being regularised to the same duration
    2. The lab logs talk about extracting determination from the human souls and injecting it on the one hand in dead monsters, to make their souls durable, and on the other in a soulless vessel to absorb them and accumulate their power. It isn't explicitly said, but the chosen vessel was a golden flower, in honor of the king's love for them. Flowey is a golden flower, and he seems to lack empathy - a "soul". That would mean he was the vessel created by alphys. The king's son had died on a bed of golden flowers in the throne room of the palace, spreading his dust on them...
    3. Alphys's prepared dating items were for a scaly person in armor who has a spear, hinting that she was preparing for the hope of going on a date with undyne
    4. The amalgams were, indeed, amalgamations of different monsters you met in your journey. You were supposed to recognise which they were and pick appropriate ACTions that fit each monster they had taken parts from

I had all but forgotten about the amalgamates and their stories. They were all a good part of why I loved this game so much. But the one which I had fully forgotten about, Crystal was the one which in my first experience with these impacted me the most. Sure, Memoryhead was scary, and Endogeny was surprisingly cute, but Crystal was the one that hurt me most. The following is why.
I have been horrified of memory loss, being forgotten by my family, being useless to those around me, being worthless to those that care about me, and being helpless in my surroundings *since those concepts were introduced to my thoughts*. These things started when I was six. Not due to trauma, not due to anything being wrong with me in the head, just because of my genetics. My parents struggle with this too. As much as I idolize those older and wiser than me, I'm horrified of getting older because I'll deteriorate, I won't go out quickly, and I'll end up hurting the people I love because of it. Even after years of living by the idea that tomorrow will worry for itself, I can't help but worry for my own mind, especially with the memory loss I already have, the deterioration I never thought I'd be experiencing this young. Chronic illness and learned helplessness in the face of such setbacks haven't helped in the slightest, and I act colder and colder toward those I once loved.
Where Crystal plays into these fears is as follows: She has been under treatment with no possibility of being returned to her family for an indefinite period of time. Her only memory is of her son, who she only vaguely recalls is "funny". She doesn't remember who he is, what he looks like, what he sounds like, just his name and a basic characteristic. And that's all she remembers, other than it being "cold, so cold". She is entirely helpless, relying on a caregiver that doesn't understand what they're doing, or whether it's helping Crystal. She isn't living, she's barely surviving, and not just that, but with two other people in her head at all times. She doesn't understand what's going on around her, hell, she doesn't know if you were laughing or not. She feels worthless constantly, as shown by her projection on you when you heckle her. Her son and husband only hardly remember her, and they remember her in bits and pieces.
Out of all of the amalgamates, Crystal is by far the most heartbreaking, horrifying one, because she's fully helpless in the situation. Where the others have effective attacks, memory of their former personalities, and a mostly cohesive form, she only has a hint of an attack her son knew, her son's name, and a form fully addled by the artificial determination she was given.

the important thing in playing undertale is that just listening o the osts doesn't show the changes in pitch through your choices and gameplay

    "Undyne is an Aries..."
That was the last thing I expected to hear but honestly, facts. In your opinion, what do you think all the other characters are?

You've yet to face the greatest being in the underground, but if you stay determined all *hopes and dreams* of monsters will become a reality.

Well, there is so much to say here... But I suggest you finish the game first and then we can explain the story fully. At least I hope you are not just interested in the music, but maybe a bit in the story as well. I really enjoy watching your playthrough and I'm eagerly waiting to see more. Also I genuinely enjoy hearing you voicing the characters, you just don't get that anywhere else. Deltarune would be a perfect follow up to this and I really recommend you to check it out after this, you won't be disappointed.

I think it's funny that Marco had to physically force himself to say he liked anime that was hilarious
