There are some fan comics that depict chichi in a great way and i wish we could see more of that. Instead of being forever angry at Goku maybe we see shes excepted that goku is a simple guy and willing to support him while still keeping him in check. So basically Chi Chi is the one who has to compromise...more than she already has in order to be more likeable? Why can't Goku put more effort into being a family man? Worry less about training and more about instilling values that aren't related to fighting, learning who his children and grandchild are as individuals. I much rather that than the continued narrative that Chi Chi is the problem.

  • @matti.8465

Raditz' attack definitely changed something in Chi Chi. Before that she was martial arts as a nice sport and would have been okay with Gohan pursuing that.
But after losing Goku and almost losing her toddler, it makes sense that Chi Chi would want to keep her son as far away from that lifestyle as possible.

    • @Nickle_King
      @Nickle_King 9 місяців тому +16

Does that excuse her ignoring Goku's agency as a fighter, or the fate of the planet some of the time? The problem isn't that Chi Chi has had a hard life. The problem is she's trying to brow beat her own ideas onto them, regardless of reality.
Trauma is not an excuse to control others or spread more pain. And she tries to do both. Hell. During the androids/Cell arch, she is told terrible things are coming that will murder countless people unless Goku or Gohan can stop them and she just doesn't care. She wants a nuclear family so bad, she wants to ignore the world burning around her. That can't be ignored just by saying "She's had it rough." Especially when you consider that she's had probably the best life of all the other characters in that show. There really is no excuse for it.
She's just a badly written, selfish character. I don't know what brought up this video idea that she's somehow more likable than she was just because time's past, but it's not true at all.

@@Nickle_King It's a little more complicated than that. Like objectively yeah, she's a character written in the 90's by a guy who doesn't know how to write women that don't fit into certain archetypes. But there are certain things that make more sense when you look at them from Chi Chi's perspective, even if she becomes more unreasonable over time.

The problem Chi-Chi faces is that she’s the most normal person in our group of notable characters. Everyone else is either super strong, or super smart, or a talking animal. Chi-Chi though? She’s simply a mother that wants what’s best for her children. As a kid, I always hated how she didn’t want Gohan to fight, since it would spell doom for the whole world. Today, I get it now. No sane mother would willingly send their 4-11 year old to a war, even if they’re good at shooting things. I chalk it up as one of those things you appreciate more as an adult than as a kid.

I don't know, I'd actually say Krillin is the most normal - ignoring his powers for a moment, he was the one who always felt the most like an audience surrogate and just a 'guy', you know? It's why the Buu saga doesn't work as well, because his role is so severely reduced when he's the emotional backbone of the story.

NOBODY but Goku thought he could do it, except maybe Gohan himself. Goku was keeping his cards very close to his chest and not letting anybody in on his plan until it was too late. And this was after several years of Chi-Chi allowing Gohan to train with Goku for the arrival of the Androids, with the understanding that it would be GOKU saving the day like he always did.

the problem you missed is gohan doesnt like to fight, goku didnt understand that, and kept dragging gohan into all his fights, it took piccolo to slap some sense into goku for him to finally realise gohan doesnt like to fight!
chi chi wasnt in the wrong she was looking out for gohan, goku if anything was in the wrong, and when goten came along and goten liked fighting, chi chi helped goten learn to fight!
so you can see she always looked out for her sons best interests and tried her hardest to give gohan every chance he needed to pursue his studies so he could achieve what he wanted in life instead of letting goku drag gohan into a brutal world that gohan didnt really enjoy.

Gohan didnt enjoy fighting and clearly had different aspirations in life, he wasnt like Goku, yet Goku kept dragging Gohan into his world while Chichi wanted to keep Gohan OUT of the death matches, simply put she was looking out for Gohans interests where as Goku didnt understand Gohan until the fight with Cell.
This is also consistent with Goten... Goten enjoyed fighting, so ChiChi was alright with training him, ChiChi never got in the way of her boys chasing their dreams, she only got in the way when goku kept dragging gohan into fights.

Anime in general tend to exaggerated a characters traits for gags.
Mix that with the fact that the dub makes her seem like “the smart one” to goku’s antics and most fan never even seeing dB and the nuance got lost.
She’s WAY nicer in the manga, it’s not just a her thing tho. It happened to krillin, roshi, Yamaha and even goku and vegeta
Way before it even hit the west toriyama had issue with how toei made goku too heroic and missed out on the “poison” of his character and watered down his nuances.
And outside of DB it’s hit characters like Sakura and mikasa from naruto and aot the worst.

Demons, talking animals, the Red Ribbon Army, Androids (yes Androids were around since OG Dragonball), Kami, Korin, Goku has a tail, etc. Also, Goku being the strongest in the world doesn’t change that Piccolo is still out there. Sure, Goku beat him once, but Chi Chi has no reason to think “Goku will just beat him again” after how much trouble Piccolo was in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. I honestly don’t know what Chi Chi was expecting when she married Goku. Hell, the conditions of their marriage aren’t even normal (he made some random promise at 12 and he didn’t even know what marriage was. Not to mention the first time he met, he tapped her crotch with his foot to figure out her gender. Did she honestly expect normalcy from this guy?)
Yeah we all want this and that, but does that really excuse lying to ourselves? It’s like Chi Chi just chose to shut out all the wackiness of Goku and his adventures and said “Yeah this guy totally will be a normal husband and get a normal job” despite the numerous red flags pointing in the exact opposite direction. Though, to be fair, this is Toriyama’s fault. When you find out he only had Goku and Chi Chi get married because he didn’t like her and wanted to “punish” himself by drawing her more, it really puts the lack of logic behind the marriage into perspective. Probably had a lot to do with the dub making chi chi come off as the smart one to goku’s antics
The whole point of her character is that she’s also a person who grew up a sheltered life like goku and has a very naive relationship towards the outside world while being scarily persistent dedicated in the things that she wants.
She’s an equal extreme to goku’s and it’s why they get each other.
She grew to be a traditionally conservative (not politically) mom because it’s a mix of her wanting to give her kid a better life but also because a traditional nuclear family structure is literally all that she thinks is possible.
It both keeps her anchored while also just in general helps in keeping up appearances and not wanting to just be seen as country hicks despite not quite knowing how to do so.
The pressures to appear as perfect is far more common and eastern places like japan and you can even see this concept manifest in modern stories like Spy X Family.
You can see this pretty quickly when she accused videl of beating gohan in a tournament as some excuse for a date and videl was horrified to learn chichi was giddy over the idea that that’s how she met her husband and what she considers romance (still maintained in the dub surprisingly) but without the context of who she’s normally supposed to be like, it comes off more manic than it supposed.
Her and goku are supposed to be equally weird people in a world they grew up outside of.

I've always got Chi-Chi. It was Gohan's dream to be a scholar, and she was doing her best to help him accomplish his goal.
Also, the times of peace in Dragon Ball are longer stretches than the battles. The training is usually years, or months, but the battles are usually 1 to 2 days.
The longest stretch was the trip to Namek, the battle and the trip back.
So living a normal life is what they typically do in Dragon Ball. So Chi-chi bringing Gohan down to Earth, so he has a solid future, makes sense.

i don't hate chichi, the thing i disliked with her is the fact that she was overbearing, i get wanting to protect her sons from fighting dangerous foe like cell, what i don't get is the amount of studying, of lessons and her never wanting her husband to do what he does best, i mean if she had Goku go to multiple tournaments with cash prize on the side, he would have won almost every time (baring krillin or tien getting a lucky ring out if they participated). thus letting him actually provide more than with just farming for his familly. also let's be honest people says that becoming a schollar was gohan dreams, but, when you don't know anything but studying for more than 3/4 of your early childhood you don't actually have your own dream it has been imposed on him even if he does not realise it. same if it had been in reverse and he would have trained with his father for the same amount, fighting would not have been his dream but his father. that is why goten is actually a balanced teen, he has his parents blessing to do what he wants and they don't force him to do one or the other with the exception of what he need for school. chichi got better with time but outside of her not wanting her sons to fight galactic threat, she really neded to let her son be his own person, maybe gohan would have actually been balanced earlier in his life ( and a better character than he had been).

Nah, I hate Chichi less than I did as a kid, and as an adult I understand her plight...and still hate her because of her attitude and entitlement about matters other than trying to stop Gohan from fighting.
Her intentions are fine for the most part, but she thinks that she can insult and bully everyone else just because they don't want to blast back at her, and admonishes Goku for being Goku when she's the one that pushed to marry him in the first place and then expects him to change outright instead of accepting who he is and then working WITH him for improvement. And the filler episodes didn't help with me appreciating her attitude either.
And that with the issue of her relative normalcy being faced with the increasingly supernatural, and her doubling down on her attitude just gets worse.
I don't think she's always wrong but she is still ignorant and annoying and thus never fun to watch.
And yes, I get the whole "badly written woman" thing. But what was written is still her "character" and I hate that "character". I hated Bulma on Namek for similar reasons, but she had way more other positive moments outside of that.
I think my most negative moment with her in DBZA is the moment where she intimidates Vegeta with the "Do not make me come over there, I will rip your world A-F*cking sunder!". The first time I saw that, my first thought was an indignant "Oh please, and you'll do ~what~ to Vegeta of all people? Wait...Why the hell is he backing down?!"

    • @RysGameZ
      @RysGameZ 9 місяців тому

That last part about dbza, I’ve don't liked that trope combined characters that intentionally antagonize other characters. Speaking of the DBZA, I think Bulma is done a lot better in dbza because sure, she can sometimes be antagonistic towards the group, but she's also incredibly smart, helps the group a lot, and has lots of good character moments, where as Chi Chi is just antagonizing the group all the time. The difference between Bulma and Chichi antagonizing Vegeta is that Bulma is a character that we know to love and respect and Vegeta, despite having good character moments, has a REALLY BIG EGO and we want to see Vegeta be put in his place, so went Bulma and Vegeta argue and even seeing vegeta get some mental blows to his pride by some who isn't stronger than him is great to see, however, unlike Bulma, Chichi is just as, if not more, antagonistic towards everyone then Vegeta, plus Vegeta has great character moments and jokes throughout the series, unlike Chi Chi, so even though we don't like vegeta’s massive ego, we still love him and also what to see Chi Chi to be put in her place, but it doesn’t happen because he’s scared for some reason, so you can understand why something like that feels off, The reason why it works so with Bulma is because she's good at effectively pushing the Goku button without going too far and vegeta respects Bulma. Meanwhile, Vegeta has no respect for Chichi, but still for some reason, gets intimidated by her. She's not even as strong as him. I've never liked “the antagonistic ‘Good guy’ that never gets punished for their actions because for some reason everyone is scared of me.”

I personally miss that about Super Broly a bit. Yeah, he's more of a character, and far better written than his original incarnation - but that just ends up making me more conflicted about seeing him go all out. There always was that tragic character arc in the background, building towards a redemption arc.
With OG Broly it was more simple. More of a "turn off your brain and enjoy the carnage" kind of situation. The fun of breaking things for no reason distilled into a character, just because.

I never hated Chichi the problem with her character was that she really was against accepting that her family wasn't normal.
I mean her husband is a alien warrior raised in the mountains while her kids are hybrids.
She can't expect that Goku will be a normal husband and that her kids aren't regular kids instead of superpowered half aliens especially when a lot of evil people wants to conquer or destroy earth.

I kind of have to disagree regarding Old Broly.
The Old Broly was more simple just purly evil for the sake of it whilst more brutal, sadistic and actually more self-aware, in a way he's kind of like Kid Buu except more masculine and way more intimidating.
I think the real reason people believe Broly hates Goku because his crying kept him up was solely two randomly commentating on it.
When in actuality it was due to how Goku being a low class Saiyain with a power of 2 was able to make(and even intimidate) Broly cry which is actually embarrassing for the legendary Super Saiyan to the point no wonder the two unseen Saiyans found it hilarious.
While also acknowledging Goku's crying as a symbol of his unwillingness to back down especially to those who are stronger than himself despite being born as weak he is.
Which makes a lot of sense especially for Goku's character knowing what he'll become and what he'll be in the near future.

Originally I really didn’t liked Vegita being sold to me as a hero; It seemed like they went to thinking he was a good guy before he had done anything to make up for it; Since, he really has become his own character, but for his initial run, I didn’t see a difference between regular Vegita and Majin Vegita. ‘Oh no Vegita is possessed and blowing up innocent people left and right… wait so, what’s the difference?’

    Hey Masako! I just wanna give the two cents on old Broly;
Broly didn't even *hate* Goku in the first movie. That was dubism that carried on into the second movie.
Old Broly was basically a psychopath by Saiyan standards, to the point that Paragus had to brainwash him with the Slave Crown to reign him in.
All Kakarot did was serve as a catalyst to, as Paragus said in the original Japanese, "awaken Broly's saiyan instincts", enabling the monster to break out of his cage.
He was obsessed with Kakarot in the second movie because his Kakarot kicked his ass, and he wanted a rematch.

Filler did the character 0 favors. Geez, I think the WORST of Chi-Chi was when Ox-King dropped some truth bombs while they were watching the Cell Games and if I remember correctly this woman literally threw her own father out of the house in a rage.
I don't know maybe being black, I just know at ANY age I wish I would raise my voice to my parents the way she did to her pops! Someone would need to gather the Dragon Balls afterwards though... 😂

Some suggestions to what this Changes in the Comments below.🔽

    • @Emerald-Reversal
      @Emerald-Reversal 9 місяців тому

These are some of the things that would Change:
1: Yamcha ends up accompanying Goku to King Kai's Planet, where he could help Goku train, and also learn both the Kaioken and the Spirit Bomb. (At this Point in the Story, Yamcha would have a Pure enough Heart/Soul so he could learn both these Techniques)
2: Yamcha is very Proficient at Controlling Ki, which is the Reason he can use his Spirit Ball, he ends up combining it with the Spirit Bomb, enabling him to use it the same way.
3: Goku doesn’t get as injured when fighting Vegeta, meaning he and Yamcha would accompany Krillin, Gohan and Bulma immediately.
4: With Goku, Krillin, Yamcha and Gohan all training together they get way stronger than in the Original, and Goku arrives earlier on Namek. (Let’s say Goku convinces Bulma to make a Gravity Chamber in the first ship)
5: Yamcha gets his Potential unlocked by Guru, while Goku declines as he doesn’t want Handouts, making Yamcha nearly as strong as Original Ginyu Saga Goku. (Lets say about 80,000 without Kaioken. Goku is at 100,000 in base)
6: Yamcha and Goku end up fighting Frieza together and also both land on Yardrat. (Or Metamor if we want to make it interesting and get earlier Fusions) Yamcha would learn Instant Transmission and learns one of the other Yardratian Techniques. (Goku didn’t learn one of these techniques in the Original since he was learning to Control his Super Saiyan transformation, but Yamcha can learn one of them) Lets say he decides to learn Healing, so he can use Kaioken more efficiently.
Some smaller things: Vegeta survives earth. Vegeta still gets with Bulma during the time Yamcha and Goku are on Yardrat. (Or Metamor if you want early fusions) Yamcha ends up getting together with Launch instead.

Chi Chi wants her husband and children to be functional and thriving during peacetime which accounts for the greatest share of the timeline despite being the extreme minority of the screentime. Gohan grew up to be a responsible and productive member of society and Goten seems to be polite and well adjusted, headed down a similar track even if he's not that scholarly. That mindset of being equipped to live most of your life in peacetime is something she ultimately inherited from Roshi by way of her father raising her after living as his disciple alongside Grandpa Gohan.

Not a character, but a form. I originally disliked Blue like everyone else, especially because of its design and because it probably should’ve been unlocked later in the story. But I’ve really come to appreciate it, and how Super has really made it versatile with many different applications and variations, giving it a unique identity. It’s one of the few forms that after getting surpassed in power still managed to stay relevant

Super Saiyan Blue isnt just Super Saiyan God+Super Saiyan.
It's Saiyan Beyond God, the baseline form, with the classic Super Saiyan used as a different path compared to the red haired God form. Thats why they operate differently

GT Chichi feels like the original chichi again. Her husband comes back from a universal travel, was sealed in hell and is suddenly 50 years younger? And her reaction is more or less just "That's my Goku" with a smile.
