Having been in high school when PTI was started it became a daily ritual from 14 to now. Still listen via podcast. One of the functional real relationships you can feel thru the TV came from Kornheiser and Wilbon. This was an unexpected treat. Thank you Dan. Thank you Michael.

Thanks for this. After my mom passed in 2014 I moved to Monterey and caddied at Pebble Beach for almost five years, and I had Mike's bag when he was in the Bay area for the Ws playoff run in I think 2018. It was probably the best day I had in that five years, and we had the chance to talk about a lot of things. I cannot speak highly enough of Michael Wilbon, and I appreciate his thoughts so much on parenting these days as I am about to become a dad for the first time, at fifty. I'm just glad to find this and again thank you so much. Dan's ok too 😅

I first learned of Mr. Wilbon on ESPN's "The Sports Reporters." That show was a kind of "bridge" between the giants of newspaper & books sports writing, and today's sports-related TV talk shows. I know it's kind of an Old Guy / Boomer thing to say, but to me men like Mike Lupica, Mitch Albom, John Feinstein, Bob Ryan -- and Michael Wilbon -- were so much more interesting to listen to, than today's TV "hot take sound bite" guys. They were so thoughtful, and things their commentary was imbued with a true knowledge of the "history" of each sport. Wilbon and Feinstein were always so intelligent and eloquent -- and Lupica and Albom were incredibly funny. Like when I was a kid on Saturday morning who didn't want to miss cartoons, I would always be "planted" in front of the TV on Sunday mornings as a young adult, to make sure not to miss "The Sports Reporters." I love Dan LeBatard, and he's so right about Michael Wilbon, and the place he occupies in 21st century American sports media. I'm so glad Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser are still going. Tony is similar to Lupica, Albom, and Feinstein -- in that he's neither handsome like a local TV news reporter, nor is he a former athlete that viewers already know. So "Pardon the Interruption" kind of proves that to be successful, you DON'T have to embrace the faux argumentative, Me vs. You, "hot take" culture that has taken over sports talk (at least on TV). I always wanted more of Lupica, Albom, and Feinstein -- but I guess maybe they were "writers at heart," and each was very successful as an author, in their own right. All three would have been truly great podcasters, telling stories and sharing their knowledge of the history of sports. I guess the closest thing we have now, is "The Bill Simmons Podcast" -- and just like it was with Saturday morning cartoons and Sunday morning "Sports Reporters," I never miss an episode. Great show as usual, Dan & LeBatard Show team!

Wilbon is from a bygone era. It's fascinating and I love it. I don't agree with it necessarily but I get where he is coming from and I appreciate that he is authentically himself. There are not many left like Wilbon, and credit to Dan for wrestling with him while leaving enough space to speak listen and accept him for where he is, when he could have easily taken this in a different direction for the sake of entertainment, or cheap clicks.

If you want the next generation to take on something you have to connect with them. It’s not about intelligence. Previous generations accepted everything they were given. Recent generations do not on principle. Things that have always been valuable, like for some people stoicism, continue to be valued. Communication remains about how it’s practiced as much as what it’s about.
Growing up on PTI and hearing this is a trip, appreciate all the honesty and glad Wilbon is growing still as a person and reaping the benefits. He’s a legend for a reason, and it’s cool to see how he didn’t have to be progressive to be a progressive hero. Shows how everyone can be a figure of change, not just the most fervent and the grief eaters.
Another awesome interview; thank you all for sharing!!!!
