      We have that here in India, You can enter at any official service center of any company(except Apple and one or two others), be it phones/laptops/vehicles or anything you can imagine and get the exact original spare part.
      This is because they already have a set profit on selling those parts and all a consumer can save is on the labour cost which for Xiaomi is like $2 USD here.
      They even list the spare part price on the official website of all phones they launch. So yeah.. it's a heaven for DIY people.

      If you go through that list, the display for the A1 is for ₹2,199 ~ 39AUD
      And the Battery is for ₹1,299 ~ 23AUD
      And these all are genuine parts with 6 months warranty even if you install it yourself!

    That was a really good phone from xiaomi. Too bad they discontinued this series after A3 bcz they couldn't get enough profit by making stock androids and trying to kill all the existing ones.

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 2 роки тому +41

      It's because of how terrible they handled Android One devices. This A1 is literally the only completely fine model from their Android One lineup. The A2 had worse camera system and dropped the headphone jack, which was actually quite good on the A1. Then the A3 is surely the worst out of the bunch, with Android 11 update literally bricking the phone and rendering it unusable.
      It really seems as if ever new generation is actually worse than the predecessor.
      On top of that, their supposed purpose of being Android One devices, which is very fast and stable software updates that's just second to Google's Pixels, is not delivered at all. Heck, even Sony's non-Android One mid range devices during that time were updated much quicker still, which begs the validity of the Mi A series as Android One devices when they don't even comply to the bare minimum standards of Android One program. Nokia just did Android One devices much better overall.

    I got my A1 in August 2017 and passed it on to my wife in October 2019. She's still using it without issues, we just had the earpiece replaced a few days ago (it appears to be a common thing to fail on the A1 after a few years) but otherwise is working great and the battery is solid. Oh, and - of course the Aliexpress earpiece is terrible quality, but it's at least loud and working.

    I replaced dozens of those screens. The repair was very straightforward, since after removing the 2 screws, you can remove the backcover with fingers.
    Even though i bought many different screens already glued with the frame (which makes the repair a breeze), none were really original and the colors were always washed out. Not that the original screen was super quality, but still.
    I've had Xiaomis since 2016 and they were really easy to repair, but getting the parts from aliexpress was a waiting game and quite unreliable just like you pointed out.
    For what it's worth, nowadays Xiaomi and Redmi phones are pretty good price/performance devices.
    You should check them out, in Europe they are quite common.

  • @HB45175
    @HB45175 2 роки тому +7

    I cracked my A1 screen back in the day and just got a new screen "with frame" that was identical to the old one (even had the same hand made markings next to the hardware revision stamp like my orignal, which I note Hugh's phone is lacking, so my replacement was probably a Xiaomi original), and it and also came with the metal tabs already installed. It was super easy to just move the internals over and it was good as new.
    Suffice to say, your "premium" repair kit was far from premium, which made this more difficult than needed.

      You can also lodge a dispute with AliExpress prior to confirming receipt and that you’re happy with the item. I bought some AirPod Pro clones from one of their sellers. The right one only had minimal volume and I was sent a replacement individual right pod all the way to the UK. This sorted the issue although it took some time and communication was a little tricky. On a £30 set of headphones that ended up being pretty good I’d say that’s actually GOOD customer service and that AliExpress is ok if you’re careful

    That's what I've just experienced. Recently my Redmi 4X's screen cracked cause I dropped it on the corner. Tried to get a replacement screen said to be original, only to have the navigation buttons not working from screen off(need to touch the screen once before the navbar is able to work again). Also my Z3 Compact's screen is in condition where touch is broken in some places.
    I would love to have those repaired. But with parts circling around are mostly fake with questionable quality being sold as 'original', I would better off buying used phone and have it running till it breaks down, hopefully in a year or two, which is why I'm now running used XZ1 with white spots on the screen and lower capacity battery, otherwise still perfectly functional.

      I have a Redmi Note 4X and getting replacement screens are hard...

    •  2 роки тому

      You'd be better off finding a donor phone with dead internals. The 4X and the Z3 compact are getting rarer.

    •  2 роки тому

      I just checked 4Xs, locally (Serbia) they're sold for like $40 for a wonky one but with a good, original screen, and a good working one for $60. That's just a tiny bit more than what replacement screens of unknown origin are going for.

    • @Indrakusuma_a
      @Indrakusuma_a 2 роки тому

      @ That was what I was going for my 4X, but couldn't find any donor candidate with justified pricing. So I ended up going for screen replacement only which proved to be a bad decision. It costed me about US$ 34.5(screen, battery, and power/volume flexible cable, all highly questionable quality).
      As for Z3 Compact, it was once having temperature and random reboot issues, although it seems to be working fine now. Hence I went for a used XZ1 which I got for about US$ 50(I'm in Indonesia btw). It's the biggest phone I've ever had and obviously not comfortable to use. I'm still tempted for XZ1 Compact but it's really hard to find a good one.

    Fyi the wrong colour display is not part of AliExpress fault but the Xiaomi itself.
    Xiaomi uses chinese manufactured displays(tianma, csot, bsot, shenchao).
    Even same device model has different display types and each type requires that particular display to function and display colours properly.
    Ex: in case in this video the display maybe of shenchao since it has ghosting issues, nd maybe the previous display was tianma, so if u install other type of display u mess up

It's much easier to replace the display on the Pixel, but much harder to replace the battery, pretty much the opposite amount of effort for each vs this phone. Of course at my age none of this is particularly easy, since my eyes won't focus on anything less than a foot from my face anymore.... Working on desktops is hard enough. I highly recommend Aliexpress if you are not from USA/ Europe countries. For these, you should find maybe better sellers but I highly doubt you would get these same parts on ebay that it would be shipping from China as well.
