If u can't save hybrid seeds,don't worry.u can still grow your fav hybrid varieties by simply taking the sideshoots and rooting them in water and then transplanting them .

@@chrisitinabobinski3798 we eat most of the tomatoes raw, enjoying the relatively short tomato season to the max. I like to put them in things like pasta salads (raw). One year I also dried surplus mini-roma tomatoes and I experimented with fermenting them (loved the taste)

I grew Esterina this year after watching this vid. It was my earliest ripening tomato, one of the longest producing, and very productive. It stood up well to the Kansas extreme heat. In our family taste test, it was my chef son's favorite cherry. I liked it for fresh eating and in tomato tarts. It will be a standard in my garden, along with Black Cherry, Sungold, and Sweet 100. ~ I made cuttings of favorite tomatoes a week ago, and Esterina was the first to root. ~ Thanks for introducing us to Esterina!

Loving the interaction with your family! I do find that I gravitate towards planting the cherry type of tomatoes too because of the productivity and ease of care.

This year we're growing Gardeners' Delight, Sungold, and for the first time, Black Cherry, after your enthusiastic review of it last year. Our family has found the Black Cherry flavour underwhelming - just goes to show how everyone's tastes are different. The other two are famously tasty varieties, so there was stiff competition. What astounds me most though is the vigour of Black Cherry! Ours are outside and were way ahead of the other varieties and it's already some the since they reached the tops of 8ft canes, forcing me to remove the growing tips.

I'm in the UK, but grow our tomatoes only outside - we have a long south facing fence which helps. We always frow lots of beefsteak varieties, the cherry tomato we grow is a bush type which we allow about 2 metres space, the two we grow each year are called Gardeners Ecstasy (bred from Gardeners Delight - seeds from Real Seeds in Wales).
Masses of fruit and I do have to keep pruning and trimming to stop it becoming too congested. It is not the first to produce fruit, but will go on to first frost - or blight.
Really excellent flavour balance, not too sweet, nice acid hit to follow and a real tomato taste. Regarding the crop, most years we have so much, even after giving masses away, I use them to make tomato sauce for pastas and curries. Soups too!
@ Nick Straw - I also grow my tomatoes outside, and I take it like a sport: 25 to 30 tom. plants for a family of two, so I'm more concerned about the taste than productivity giving most of the harvest to friends and neighbours. Beef, Ukrainian pink, Cherokee pink, Brandywine, Petites Rondes (larger than grape tom. and good for canning German style), Early Girl, Better Boy, Gold cherries, Cherokee cherries, Abe Lincoln, Gold Nugget, Bonnie Best, Legend. My favorite are cherries for their sweetness and Cherokee purple for their size and taste. Still looking for other varieties... I live in Oregon (North West of the USA). We have a long rainy spring but a very hot summer (temperature can go up to 42 C) and a very warn fall, so tomatoes give fruits up to the end of October.
Love those facial expressions on every tomatoes. Lovely kids, adorable parents. Always love black cherry too but will definitely try the Barry's.

Black Cherry needs to be almost black for at least 3-5 days to develop its sugar and full balance of flavor.
The White Tomato will turn to a translucent light yellow when ripe and needs 3-5 days on the vine after changing color to develop its sweetness.
Sungold will turn to a deep orange and will basically fall off at the lightest touch when they are at their peak. In fact, I search the ground diligently for fallen tomatoes as they are ALWAYS the best tasting.

My favorite is a chocolate cherry which seems similar to the black cherry. My second favorite is a bumblebee *yellow/orange/reddish which seemed similar to the esterina when you described what it was supposed to look like. Very nice video - welcome home!
Enjoyed family atmosphere. Here in Denver Colorado USA. My favorite cherry tomato is sun gold, sweet 100, and yellow pear cherry tomato. For medium size BLACK PRINCE. mild flavor but sets a lot of fruit, nice color. All so Ukrainian purple, sweet, color. Cheers.

I was glad to see you comparing Sungold and Esterina, as I've been espousing the superiority of Esterina for years! I found Atomic Grape kind of flavourless, and didn't love the thicker skin, but I will be trying Black Cherry next year. Thanks for the great video!
Black Cherry will get to a blackish burgundy when ripe. They benefit from a few days on the vine after changing color to develop the full flavor profile and maximum sweetness.
I concur with your opinion of Atomic Cherry. In fact, I have not eaten ANY Brad's varieties that I actually like.

I like your use of roping up the tomatoes, very cool. I've done this from a cable varying from 6 to 8 feet in come cases I like growing black eyed peas (20-30 feet long vine) along the cable.

Green Grape cherry is my fav. It has a fresh and complex flavour that just wows. Thanks for the fun in your video. We can't get many US tomatoes in Australia due to disease prevention measures, but a few of Brad Gates's varieties are here thankfully.
I actually got seeds of Green Grape and tried sowing them for this very trial but they did not germinate - since you recommend them so warmly, I'll try to sow the leftover seed this year!

Great video. I was very interested in hearing everybody's opinion about Brad's Atomic Grape, I bought the seeds this year for the first time, but it was unfortunately the only one where all my seedlings died, no idea why, they were treated exactly the same as all my other ones. But as you all liked it so much I'll give it a try again next year .

This video is cute. Esther has a big English vocabulary, and Sebastian sounds like a documentary narrator. I have a black cherry tomato also, and I agree that it's really good, probably my favorite so far, but I haven't tried any of the others. I have an Atomic Grape plant, but they are not ripe yet. My Dad loves the Sungold, but perhaps I will try the Esterina if I can get in the US. Thank you!

I also like the black cherry but it comes in different sizes mine are not as large as yours and they also come in a large version but my faverit is Debaro anice plumb tomato with a real taste of tomato may be you know this one as it comes from Romainia but I have been growing it for 35 years now

Thank you m, Richard! The Black Cherry seems a bit bigger than it was last year - I save the seeds and it’s possible there has been some cross pollination which changed the plant a bit. I don’t know the tomato you recommend- will look it up!
Nice video! Loved that you included your kids. Wondering if sometime you might do a video on how you prune tomatoes. Every year I vow to contain the indeterminates (I grow some of the ones you grow), but I'm skittish about really pruning them back.

I just discovered your channel and thoroughly enjoyed your tomato tasting with your family. I live in California in the Central Valley...not far from Wild Boar Farms. My favorite tomato from last summer was Dancing with Smurfs which is a wonderful cherry tomato. I also liked Barry's Crazy Cherry which you all weren't that crazy about. Our climate here is very very dry....no rain at all from April until November which am sure it is very different that your climate in the Netherlands and am sure the taste varies according to your climate and rain availability.
At any rate, I'm sure I am going to enjoy your channel. Enjoy!

FYI: my garden friends tell me if the plant continues grows beyond the fruit, it’s the plant going back to its origin (and no longer a hybrid) so you may be able to collect seeds. I trying it out this year.

I have not tried everything, But I'm trying sun gold and hopefully Esterinia for they are orange and I think it's my favorite flavor of tomatoes

Black cherry is a good one. So Ive never bought any yellow cherry tomato seeds yet last year unexpectedly one of my cherry tomatoes produced a bright yellow cherry tomato and i was blow away with how good it tastes so I collected a bunch of seed which I will definitely keep growing now. I liked that garden surprise 👍
I'm thinking the bright yellow cherry tomato I found in my garden could have been a white cherry tomato... Either way it's a delicious one I gotta keep in the garden
@@JohnDoe_88 A nice surprise! We had something like that happen with the 'Matt's Wild Cherry' tomato when we saved the seed - one of the plants produced yellow fruits all of a sudden!
The isis candy cherry tomatoes I grew were actually pinkish color with a yellow star shape streaks coming from the stem if I remember correctly. I liked them a lot, they don’t look like yours do so I suspect you’re correct that’s not what you’ve got there.
The Dutch speak such superb English. I'm always amazed. (I am assuming by the accent that you guys are Dutch...but as I'm an uniformed American, I could be wrong.)
It's not a cherry but I just grew a chocolate stripes tomato and it not only looked really good but the taste was superb

For fresh eating, I only grow Sungold and Black Cherry now. Sometimes, I grow Tumbling Tom in containers just because they look so pretty. The flavour is just okay.

I have noticed that lot of purple varieties tend to have a lot of leaf curl. Not sure why. I grew indigo rose last year and it was like that the whole time -- I thought it was dying, but it produced fruit without any issues.
You are growing so many of my favorites :) Ah....it should have been a blind taste test :( If you love Black Cherry try Chocolate Cherry :)

Very fun video - well done. Consider a battle between Black Cherry, Black Opal (Gourmet Genetics) and Sunchocola (Tokita). I'll hazard a guess that Black Cherry will come 3rd.

My mom told always cut a fruit vertically when sharing, that everybody gets same taste, blossom end is always more mellow in taste n texture

How'd u grow your tomatoes so huge? What kind of things do you add to your soil?
Mostly just homemade compost, sometimes I add a little molasses based fertilizer
I suggest trying some determinate or bush types they grow big tomatoes faster then pole varieties. Ace 55 bush is delicious or super beefsteak bush.
Thanks! I grow some early bush varieties outside, but prefer indeterminate tomatoes fro the greenhouse since it's a better use of the limited space
Next time I think would be more interesting to go directly to tasting and swap between tasting and showing the tomatoes in the greenhouse.

No, I have not tried that one so don't know how it would compare but I'll try to look it up!

Is there any issue with trusses breaking off Barry's Crazy Cherry? those look so heavy!
We have not had any issues with that! I'm growing it again this year together with Esterina and Sungold and pitting these against 5 new varieties!

Most of them we just eat fresh, but sometimes I like to ferment them too

We get a lot of tourists coming here in the summer and even a great deal of Dutch (noticed by their car NL number plates). This year I'm starting to grow Sun-Gold tomatoes so I'm doing a bit of research on them and what to expect and came across your video. Anyway, thanks again and stay safe.

Sweet potato isn’t a nightshade
Yes, That's why it's so great for the crop rotation in the greenhouse. Like I said in the video, the greenhouse is divided in thirds: 1) nightshade (mostly tomatoes, 2) cucumbers & melons, 3) sweet potatoes
