  • In this video I split up the nuc that swarmed in the video the other day. Including the swarm portion, it gave us 4 colonies.

    I’m a bee keeper in the northern lower peninsula so I love your videos, as they are sooo educational and pertinent to me. Can’t wait to see the update on this swarm/hive

    I had a bear tip over and empty a five frame nuc last Friday night. It was on my neighbor’s property not protected by a bear fence. He called me around 9:00 am Saturday and told me about it. I asked if the bees were still there. He said yes. I went over in shorts, a t-shirt and crocs. I guess the bear took off after getting stung because the frames were just sitting there in a stack. Like a dummy, I figured I could just put them back into the box right then and there. Well, after a good 400 yard dash and about 10 stings later I came over in my suit to put them back in the box. Lol

    If I wore a black shirt and worked my bees I would look like a pin cushion. I wore black gloves once and got stung at least 10 times on each hand in less than a minute or two.

    Last fall and this spring I had to wear a jacket and gloves but now that the winter bees are dead and they are growing nicely the bees are so nice. Just wore a veil today and inspect 4 hives and not one bee bumped my veil or hands. Happy bees are happier LOL.

    I’m just curious on why you have the bottom board is facing the opposite direction of where the bees are?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  3 роки тому

      Not sure what you mean? They were going into the top, so it didn't really matter which direction they were facing, they will figure it out (did figure it out). I moved 'em the next day anyway.

    I started 2021 with one colony coming out of winter now I am up to 12 total colonies 6 nucs and 6 big boxes. I am going to let the 6 nucs fill the 5 frames they are in I actually put a 5 frame super on them all so I can just hopefully take 5 deep frames of bees brood and resource to put into the rest of the 8 frame equipment I have and Hopefully the supers I put on them will be full of bees and brood to take those 6 nucs through winter should end up with 22 total colonies to go into winter with. My goal was 10. So going to double that.

    Why keep two frames of brood and stores in a 10 frame hive and leave 5 frames of bees and stores in a 5 frame Nuc?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  3 роки тому

      Just the way it worked out. My original intention was to get both the nuc and swarm into tens, but the nuc still had cells so it got split. They'll all be in tens in a few days so I'm not concerned about it.

    I noticed you have quite a few plastic frames, my order got mixed up and I ended up with 340 new heavy waxed frames. How do you like them?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  3 роки тому

      I love them. Just don't leave them in the sun, and they'll work out great. They fit into boxes easier, they break away from the adjacent frames easier, they're easier to see eggs and larvae... The only downside in my opinion is as I said the ability for them to warp in the sun, and if you're further south than me, the nooks and crannies can be havens for small hive beetles. The whole idea that bees don't like them is just silly, totally wrong. If they're waxed, they'll get drawn out pretty quickly.

    • @kellysanders3875
      @kellysanders3875 3 роки тому

    Hey that's pretty cool to get 4 from 1.
    So I was also wondering how tall can you usually get the 5 frame boxes?
    Why I ask; Lately I'd been hearing these I caught a fish this big kinds of stories except for bees. And I think its distorting expectations for how big you can grow these in places that have long winters, or cold winters. I'm so used to people saying these optimum bragging stories that its hurt reality for what is typical for how much you could really grow them...?
    Noticed you wear NASA shirts or hat a lot. Is that because 'bees can fly = flying theme (NASA)?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  3 роки тому +3

      You can grow a colony pretty big, if you just keep adding boxes. Bees will fill out boxes really quickly during a nectar flow.

    • @BKBees
