Woodturning | Project That Sells - How To Fund Your Shop - Hobby

  • This is the second video in a series I intend to create to help new turners make simple, sellable items to fund their shop/hobby. Link to the first video is below. In this video I demonstrate how to make ornamental and functional bird houses on the lathe. These are great craft show, gift shop and market items. The ornamental can be made from scrap wood and can made from plain pine and painted or you can laminate some exotic pieces of scrap wood for a higher end item. These are also popular as ornaments on Christmas trees. I hope you enjoy this video, thank you for watching!

    I really enjoyed this presentation, no wasted chat at the beginning, describing as you work in simple terms, the music was at a comfortable level and did not detract or compete with your narrative-it was a good choice and fitted the project nicely. Great ideas for newcomers with a small lathe. Given that eBay shopping has gained ground the past year due to the various COVID restrictions, I can see that these smaller items could sell very well-some natural, some waxed, some painted. I like the idea of a small label naming the timber species-could easily be done on home make-paper for that extra touch. I live in Tasmania on a 5-acre natural bush property with various a range of eucalyptus, wattle, blackwood and more. All hardwoods and ideal for these ornamental items, and I have many lifetime’s endless supply. Thank you for sharing your ideas & techniques, much appreciated. 👍😁🇦🇺🦘

    There is one problem I see is some people think they can use it for hummingbirds. Sorry they will never nest in it. Google it if you don't believe me. So selling it as hummingbird house would be a scam. You could use it as a knick-knack to put in your house like craftsmen's of this video states ornamental. And yes they very nice.

      I used a 4” forsner bit in the drill press with an extension. I do have a jig to hold the square stock on the drill press. Thanks for watching!

      @TheKlondikeCraftsman  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Cliff, I don’t have plans for these, I just make them. For the birds I want to use them you just need a 4” diameter hole 8” deep with a 1-1/4” entrance hole that is about 6” up from the bottom. You can use any size wood you like that will house that hole size. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    On the larger house, how would you go about cutting the 4" hole in the base? I know they make a 4" Forstner bit but is that the only way"

    • @TheKlondikeCraftsman
      @TheKlondikeCraftsman  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Jonathan, I just used a 4" forsner bit and extension and used the same method as I drilled the small one in the video. I do have a jig to hold the big piece on the drill press. I think I will show that in the next video in the series in a few weeks. I realize that not everyone will have that capacity but wanted to show that the process was the same for those who could. Thank you for watching!

      If you wanted and were equip you could hollow the opening on the lathe but then it is not a very cost effective item to sell.
