Nintendo is interactive antidepressants. Its impossible not to be happy with all the cute and quaint characters, their big happy smiles, their bright colors and all the upbeat incredibly well orchedteated music. I could have used some antianxiety or antidepressant medication my entire life. I never took them bc i always had a nintendo console with a "take as needed" mentality
This is so true and I never thought too much about it, but without Nintendo I would’ve had so much more anxiety/ sadness as a child. Is amazing how such simple things can impact you so positively in the long run
this is weirdly similar to me, aside from the fact that I’ve loved Mario since I was a kid. Wonder came out at a perfect time to help me through a seasonal rut. I cherish that game not only for its undeniable charm and great design, but because of what it was able to do for me mentally. it was just pure, concentrated fun at a time when I needed it most. i’m glad it seemingly did the same for others.
As a kid, I felt such a deep connection with the world and atmosphere of Mario, particularly from playing games like SPM or Galaxy. Mario just embodies this sense of optimism, and the RPG’s do such a good job of fleshing him and all of the other characters out while still feeling imaginative and “Mario-like”. I just love this goofy little plumber to death
2023 was one of the hardest years in my life. Everything I'd hoped would go right didn't. But I kept going, for the good stuff. And Mario was a part of it. The Movie was everything I needed, and Wonder and RPG made an emotionally draining fall and winter leagues better. It doesn't need to be a massive tentpole that moves the world. Sometimes, we really just need a break.
Oh my god i completely forgot the movie happened last year. Yeah even before being "into" mario I was surprised at how nostalgic and giddy that movie made me feel
"Sometimes, we really just need a break" True words that I needed reminding of, so thank you for sticking around to say it! This comment section (and the world) is better with you in it :)
This video topic reminds me of probably the main reason why I appreciate Nintendo as a publisher even though I play close to zero of their games. They seem to preserve and understand the ethos of what games are: a small escape of joy to momentarily pull our attention away from the stress and despair of whatever is going on in our lives. A true game is one you can boot up and just have fun with! No worrying about progression or being in the right "mood" or sweating away at some punishing grind or getting mad at strangers online for camping out the B flag or whatever. A true "game" is just fun to play, even though it may not be the most story rich or most satisfying gameplay experience. It's just...fun! And for what it's worth, I don't think I've actually "enjoyed" the holiday season since my freshman year of high school (that was 2014....yikes that was a decade ago). When my childlike sense of wonder and joy died, so too did a lot of the "magic of the holidays." For a short while I actually hated holidays, now I'm just sort of ambivalent towards them. All that to say, you're not alone in not feeling the "joy of season" and I guess maybe I should try playing a Mario game.
Ours was always a Nintendo household, and I was always a Mario kid, following closely the vast majority of Mario releases. As a kid I always connected more to Mario, because when my younger brother and I would play pretend, I was naturally Mario and him Luigi. But I think, on a deeper level, I admired Mario's effervescence and confidence. I was always a really shy kid who never felt like he belonged anywhere, which only got worse in high school, so seeing this plucky hero who always has a smile on his face and a bounce in his step no matter what challenges he faces, and getting to step into those shoes through playing those games, was empowering and freeing. I don't agree with people who say Mario has no personality, just because his presentation is pretty static or "goody two-shoes." To someone who always longed for that confidence, Mario's natural charisma comes off like a feat he is constantly, actively achieving. Plus, if you do play the RPGs and spinoffs, you can see the finer details and subtle characterizations that writers and animators can project onto him BECAUSE he's such an everyman, which they're more limited with for characters such as Luigi, who is firmly locked into that "timid but courageous" mold. In SMRPG, he's like a little wide-eyed forest creature, but he also has a bad temper. In Paper Mario, he's a suave, rugged casanova. In M&L, he's more like the straight man and protective older brother to Luigi's fumblings. And I believe even games like Power Tennis and Fortune Street show off Mario's overinflated ego and insecurity over others taking the spotlight from him. All of these portrayals are valid and help color the character in a variety of ways that people like to conveniently ignore because he's the funny Bing Bing Wahoo Man.
Wonderful video! If you find yourself looking for another Mario game with a vibe like RPG or TTYD and happen to have an old Wii, I'd recommend tracking down a cheap copy of Super Paper Mario. Gameplay is quite a bit different and controversial but you can tell the writers were having a lot of fun
Lol I replied to the wrong comment but I guess it's perfect since u were talking about the mario rpg games as well! Still check the game out if u want. Im just super hyped about it.
Truth to be told, I grew a bit of resentment for the Mario series when I was younger. While I initially adored it, it was soured when a toxic online friend entered my life and later turned against me. He shortly grew a reputation for ripping sprites from the third Mario & Luigi game, which opened several door for him and even shielded him from any potential backlash. It took years for me to better embrace the Mario series again, but the effects of what occurred still linger to this day. As for my toxic former friend, I have no clue about what happened to him...
As someone who also grew up with the Wii and loved Mario Sports Mix, I completely understand where you are coming from! I, too, had a hard time comprehending why Mario the character was so beloved outside of the series he's named after, but in recent times, it started to click with me very similarly like it had for you! I'm going to assume everyone who played Mario Sports Mix growing up both have mental issues and is starting to appreciate Mario as a character in their adulthood :)
I just love mario as a character because he always did things to the kindness of his heart no matter who they are. I guess how always cheerie he is. Every time he jumped, he just gave so much joy. I guess Charlie's martinet really helped me a lot. I enjoyed the character. Especially his interviews
I’m so glad more people are expressing their love and enjoyment for Mario and Nintendo as adults as these games really have secret ingredients for curing
I can't find the words to express how delightful it felt to watch this video so I'll just say that it was a lovely video and I'm glad I stumbled upon it ❤
I like what you said about Mario RPG being psychedelic I feel that with a lot of switch games Even using the switch is a trip. I only was able to get a switch this year and I have felt a psychedelic type euphoria with many games I have played on this wicked thing.
I really agree woth this video, as an autistic person, sometime you just need that guy to help pull ypur though the hard times to give you pure joy. Lovely video
There are two types of Mario games. the first type are mario games that are just good games but nothing special, mario is the biggest icon in gaming so it also has the biggest standards of gaming so 99% of all games have great gameplay. But games are a form of art and sometimes game developers go the extra mile to make something special, because Mario games have always been at least good means that Mario goes the extra mile much more often than most franchises. Games like Odyssey, Wonder, Luigi's 3, Galaxy 1 and 2, Most Mario RPGs, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Bowser's Fury, some Mario Party Games, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Woolly World, and more
For me, Mario is all those things you didn’t feel as a kid. He is deeply endearing, more than Pikachu and Sonic, and he is cooler than Link. Because he doesn’t try to be, and he really shouldn’t be, in theory. He’s a chubby plumber with a mustache, but he’s super-athletic and acrobatic, and he’s brave and he’s strong. He meets every challenge with a smile, and not like a psychopathic love for killing, but the joy of getting launch himself off the ground one more time like he’s a bird trying to take flight but has no wings. Mario’s all those things, because he’s happy. Not always happy, but he always picks himself back up after, and does it all over again. He’s the absurdist hero, the kind that the everyman should strive to be more like.
(Commenting this after being a minute into the video) Been watching UA-cam for over 10yrs now and your video already comes off as if it’s made by a veteran UA-camr (utilizing music and letting it fade to the background while speaking, good speaking style, etc). Keep up the great work!!
All those folks who are like "Mario are for babies" are just insecure losers LOL. I love this video btw, man; a lot relatable segments in here. keep it up!
My biggest issue is that it never wants to just let me play. It's always interrupting me to explain the same story beats or game mechanics I've already been taught. The combat is excellent, and I think the game is visually striking, but all of the time spent waiting to just actually play it gets really grating
11:25 "Missed the mark for a lot of people and I'm far more annoyed by it than endeared to it". Man, it was one outlier review out of tons of other much more reasonable critiques, which on top of that is more like a 6 at worst with that review's actual criticisms! This whole video's point ending with M&L being lackluster is strange to me since it's been the opposite, the M&L series as a whole for me has been MY Nintendo series to point to as one of my favorites in terms of charm, substance and, of course, actual character and personality of both Mario and Luigi. I suppose differing perspectives are valuable, but it feels like you lost the plot of the rest of the video in seeing the game's flaws as representative of the whole thing and sidelining it as kinda close to Wonder, TTYD and SMRPG's level of charm, especially considering the latter 2 were remakes of old games by their OG devs and Wonder got infinite dev time and way more resources than any of these other games. Thanks for sharing, though.
I literally did not even talk about any reviews I just know that it hasn't landed for me and others have frustrations with it. It's not the ending point or even significant at all to anything I talk about in the video lol. Nintendo brought back a series we weren't sure if we'd see again since Alpha Dream bankrupted, and I'm glad they took that chance
@@skyloftgames I suppose you didn't mention it directly, but so much of the criticism and even support of this game I've seen has all either had to or been compared in response to that review, not just standing on its own. Instead of being seen as an outlier, every single remotely positive review has now been somehow discredited and ignored despite their valid points, which is why I push back against any unsubstantiated claims of 'LOTS of people have BIG problems with this game'; it just feels like ragebait and deliberate ignorance, or downright misinformation, of everything and everyone else. The fact that it objectively/personally hadn't landed for you, though, wasn't my issue, but rather that the whole premise of the video was recognizing Mario's personality and character in games that you hadn't before and games that expanded on it, like Wonder and SMRPG. I'd argue it is significant because, again IMO, this is a main, and in some ways the only, series that expresses that very sense of joyful, whimsical emotion and character that you newly associated with Mario, yet brushed it off because...you personally couldn't connect with it? When the whole point of the video built on recognizing charm that you couldn't see before and in spite of flaws? It just feels like with this, the message of the video is back to square one, I'm confused.
I just feel like you're so caught up in this whole review business that you can't hear what I actually said. "It missed the mark for some people" is not treating it as a monolothically poor game. And to qualify my own annoyance with it, I still say that it is full of life and charm
Like the whole point of bringing it up was despite all of the little things that annoy me about it, it is a game that retains that charming personality
Sometimes you just gotta jump around as a funny little red guy, its nice to see an appreciation for the simple joy a character can bring
We need more silly little guys in our games I think
The funny little red and green guys bring joy to all
To quote my sister, "SAD backwards is DAS and DAS NOT GOOD!"
Das ist nicht gut!
