The way I dyed my hair in bright colors without damage was taking advantage of how my dyes will fade. From blue faded to green, dyed it electric green, it faded to yellow, I dyed it cantaloupe and red, after all that my hair faded to a warm blonde and kept it that way.
That's exactly what I did. I had my stylist bleach out panels underneath my hair, so I only had to do it every three months or so. Then I'd work around the color wheel either forwards or backwards: Red to Hot pink to Purple to Blue to Teal to Green. I have the benefit of having really dark hair, so I could just slap on the demi permanent color myself.
I’m a bit dumb with this, so I have dark brown and I went to get it professionally bleached, I want to put colour myself, I’m looking to have a dusk pink or lilac or bright purple. What should a dye over my bleach hair to do what you do and get either dusk pink, lilac or bright purple?
OMGosh..it's like you read my mind. I am thinking about dyeing my hair pink but don't want to damage my curls. Thank you for your hair vids!!! I always recommend you to fellow curlies ♥
I didn’t know you could mix hair color with hair masks. Definitely learned some new techniques that I’ll be trying soon. Your tips on how to select my perfect hair color are super helpful as well. Thank you!
Thank you! So many times I have made color conditioning mistakes and always look on your channel for help! The one time I used a color conditioner it kind of turned my blonde hair green.... after some research and studying the color wheel I learned that Red counteracts green... so what did I have in the house that was red? Ketchup... yep I put ketchup on my hair to tone the green down.... and it worked! Between washes with a cleansing shampoo and ketchup within two washes the green came out! Colored conditioners now terrify me lol.
I never thought to use a picture of my hair and decrease the saturation to compare to grey scale to find out the level it's at. Such a great tip and learned something new!
I’ve definitely learned more about how to find the right colour for me and that coloured hair masks are even an option for colouring hair - it was fascinating to hear more about direct vs oxidizing colouring.
Hi ladies! I’m adding key learning 2/3 here: I mentioned you both were my go to’s at the beginning of my hair journey, and I actually learned how to brush style my hair by watching your videos.
My key learning for this video was just further solidifying that semipermanent color is very limited for my natural darker color but the highlights I'm growing out will pick up all that color! Explains why most of my color depositing conditioners and masks just lightly tint.
I never thought of adding a direct dye to my own products. I have some grey around my hairline that I'm hoping to blend by using a colour mask. I hope to be able to go longer between permanent dye treatments. Thanks Mel 💋
Mel & Amanda, such a good video! I loooove this Eva NYC mask. It is a staple for me…always revives my curls! Your knowledge is incredible. Your clients are so fortunate to have you!
I learned that permanent color is an oxidizer that alters the hair itself, whereas direct dyes just cling on and in a sense cover the strand! Sounds like something I rather use because I'm scared of dying my hair lol but I am intrigued to see how it would work on my black, never dyed hair...
I had never colored my hair because I was so afraid of the damage it would do to my already frizzy, dry, curly hair. I have cooler brown hair, and love the DPhue colored conditioners! I love that they aren't damaging my hair like a normal hair color would. I love to change it up. Sometimes I go warmer. Sometimes I go darker. It lasts me a long time. Don't have to use a lot of color to get the results I want. It's been fun! I don't have tons of grey, and it makes some of them less visible. Makes my hair feel great too! I'm definitely a lower maintenance girl when it comes to my hair, so this is the thing for me.
I’ve been wanting to try a semi permanent color on myself but after watching this video I understand a little better how it works and honestly don’t know if I want to do that to my hair. Definitely makes me more informed and feel more comfortable with a stylist altering my color in any way
Been loving this hair colour series already! Have learned so much from you because you explain things in a easy way and back it up with science. Thank you!
I’m regards to learning the colour wheel, the way they taught us in Cosmetology basics was literally giving us a watercolour painting day 😂 we had to neutralise, mix, and paint pretty pictures using all the colours 😂
I've never died my hair. At one point years ago (probably 8-10), a hairdresser used something that apparently was like a temporary relaxant, but I never could get a clear answer on what. So I'm nervous about dealing with chemicals for my hair. I also never use heat (though some of your videos have me considering trying a diffuser), and I rarely make changes. I'm experimenting, getting my hair healthier (was brought up to treat it like straight thin hair 🙄), and just recently got a cut. I like the length fine but am thinking of cutting more for curly hair, more layers, and some face framing (nervous). Right now it's layers but not great ones and cut like straight hair. That brought me to your videos! I'd love to play with some color, maybe more on the ends or underside, but have been trying to learn more about how to do so healthily (since I haven't found a good stylist near me). My hair ranges in color but overall is darker with strong red, so I'm guessing it'll be more of a tiny with the grey and blonde strands showing more strongly. On the plus side, it being subtle makes me less nervous about making mistakes! How do you buy the direct dye to mix in? I don't see a link or reference and can't make it out in the video enough to find online. I also realize yours might be the professional level ones or in sizes that'd be wasteful for me to get. Are there any ingredients to look for (as good or indicative to stay away from) when comparing options? It seems like "semi-permanent" is key but still has a lot of variation within it. Following your links, one of the brands also has "demi-permanent" but no explanation. Could you (or scientific you) explain those/compare that option, unless you don't recommend them? It looked more perm & mentioned lightening first, so I'm guessing it's not what most on this video want! What are your thoughts on the temporary color shampoo, conditioner, and that type of masks/similar? They seem more damaging. Thanks for all of the helpful videos!!
I am loving my natural gray curly hair now it's been getting healthier and it looks beautiful 😊😊😊😊😊 because of the damage I caused to my hair I have to use a hair mask and leave in conditioner every time I wash my hair
Specifically from this video, I learned how to figure out the tone and overall color of your hair using your phone camera. Overall I never thought of mixing hair dye with a hair mask so I’m excited to try it now that I’ve learned more!
This was great information, thank you! This seems like a great method to just refresh already dyed hair without adding more and more permanent color that will just damage the hair. I recently dyed my roots copper, toned mids orange and uh kept my ends the untoned golden that bleach just creates. But I missed a few spots at the roots and the ends are looking a little dull and uneven in tone. Trying to do an actually blended ombre on yourself is quite challenging. I'm amazed that the worst that happened was that I missed a few spots at my roots and couldn't find a golden toner for my ends. Things could have gone considerably worse! So I think all I need is a few, simple touch-ups. I used permanent dye on my roots, in the same level as my natural hair color, which is roughly a 6. (For whatever reason, permanent dye doesn't lift my natural hair color, it just looks a little lighter due to being a warmer shade.) My mids are probably level 7 and 8 (as it's a transitional color that mixes with both the copper and the blonde) and my ends are about a level 9. So it would be great if I could find some color mask or toner in a copper shade close to the permanent dye I used for my roots, and another in a light golden tone to perk up and even out my ends. Because I really love the color combination but I wish it was a little bit more even and more intense, but still looking ginger rather than bright red and yellow. If not else, the copper and orange will fade with time and I should probably start thinking about that already so that I can properly maintain this hairdo. I may not be a hairstylist, but I do know my way around color theory, because I've been drawing/painting my whole life. Accessing the right products from this little forsaken Swedish island is kinda challenging though. Usually to create toners I tend to end up buying Directions semi-permanent dyes and mixing with conditioner, but they only have shock colors, and if I wanna create a muted, more gingery copper/orange tone, I'm gonna need some brown. Unless I wanna go wild and mix blue, yellow and red but that might get messy.
Hi Seesters! loved your video as usual 💜 very informative. I have quite a lot of gray in my mid 30s and I started using Overtone to color my gray. They are color depositing conditioners so it doesn't cause any damage. I've been loving using their products and trying different colors. So fun!
Ooh this looks like a fun video. I have the Curlsmith gel color and it dries my hair out. I have a fantasy of bright purple hair. 💜 hope your wrist is better.
Wavy/curly here. I’m really thinking of getting a perm now that I know so much more about taking care of and styling curly hair. I’d just like a more consistent/tighter pattern. Could you do a video or give advice on enhancing curls artificially?
I learned that I can use a hair mask with a color ☺️ Also that I can cut my own bangs and ends and that my hair needs more moisture than protein and how important heat protection is if I decide to do a blow out 😍
Mel pls I’m begging you make a vid on how to do layers on curly hair that also looks good when straighten😩 my hair is usually straightened (not my choice) but when I do wear it natural I want it ti look niceee

I learned that semi-permanent dyes won't last on grayed hair. Definitely taking note, as I discovered my first gray hair 2 days before my 35th birthday.
Is there any way to enhance and/or encourage my grays? They are coming in so beautifully and i love them! I only wish the non-grays were closer to black than the current blah brown. But i think that any dyeing process to make the non-grays black would also cover my grays, which i don't want...and i could try and do an all-over gray, but that is quite damaging and a lot of maintenance, yes? I have lupus, so my hair is somewhat (but not extremely) fragile, so i try to baby it as much as i can. It is also curly, so tends toward dry and high porosity as well.
I am loving my natural gray curly hair now it's been getting healthier and it looks beautiful 😊😊😊😊😊 because of the damage I caused to my hair I have to use a hair mask and leave in conditioner every time I wash my hair...... These days I would rather allow the sun to naturally color my hair

I’ve always had a hard time keeping my purple hair color. I learned a lot to keep my hair dye color longer. I didn’t know that you can mix your hair dye and mask together.
Love the video! Dyes are so scary to me as someone who has previously done some major damage to my hair lol. It's cool to learn the science behind it to better understand how they work. I always love when scientific mel comes out to teach us. I do think she can do without the weird accent lol. I'm not sure what you're going for with the accent but smart girls come in all shapes and voices of course. You can totally do scientific mel with just your normal voice and we would still get the bit 😆
Thank you! I've wanted to try some fun things on my hair but a coloring service is too expensive if I don't end up liking it. This is a perfect solution! Somehting that won't last long and isn't as expensive, but I can try out some new things:))
Home color with hair masks is really the best thing I've ever picked up. Dye brushes are AMAZING and cheap and don't ever wait to pick one up (especially if you're doing anything that's more than a couple levels change) - they make it SO much easier to apply dye evenly (in small sections with clips, obs.)
I learned that hair depositing masks do not cover grey hairs. This is helpful because I'm usually the one helping my mom with her greys and we have experimented with many different kinds of colors, not all of them worked out!
I had no idea you could mix semi-permanent hair dye in with conditioner. It makes sense, it's very similar to adding purple drops to tone my conditioner...also how important undertones are to making your hair color look more natural and just all around better! I love your videos and I'd love to win that giveaway so much! That verb gel omggggggg
Any product suggestions to finding a positively-charged cream bleach? I had no idea there were different types. I've used the most popularly available bleaches over the years to rid myself of temporary dye, most unsuccessfully...so where do I find this other kind of bleach?
I've learned to not be afraid of dying your hair...I'm a dirty blonde but love being blonder 😝 as long as you take care prior and after dying your hair, your curls will be safe! Invest in good masks!
I learned to hand it over to professionals when it comes to coloring my hair 😂 i always mess it up when i do it myself 🤷 I love the idea of color masks but they're unfortunately not for me as i naturally have dark brown hair.. maybe one day if i be bold enough to bleach it 🤔
I'm waiting for this too. I've googled it but some of the dyes that come up I've tried before and they didn't work like she said it would. So I hope she updates with recommendations too!
What would happen if I am salt&pepper with very dark hair mixed with completely white hair, and I used a light bright color (light blue, green, bright red...)? Would it give a bright color to the white sections? For what I understood if the hair is not damaged (mine isn't) it wouldn't cling so well, but could it still work for a temporary coloring? Of course without covering the black ones...Like a slightly more stable alternative to Curlsmith hair makeup, which honestly I tried and was not my favorite...
In the last three video I've learnt how to protect my hair before going for a color mask, which cut suits me better and that noone knows more about their hair than one self😂❤️
1) don’t let non curlies do your hair 2)omg be careful w temp colors AND color masks which aren’t so temp or easy as they seem! 3)aloe Vera isn’t scary
Thanks for this information! I have been researching the temporary colors and the reviews. I have decided against doing temporary colors to my hair because my hair is slightly damaged and I don't want something that is going to turn into a hair horror story.
Happy text your Tuesday! I have level 2/3 natural dark Brown hair, I don't think a color mask would work on me. :( Still, happy to see another entertaining and educational video from one of my favorite curlies.
I'm also quite dark - I'll often pay for a salon to do foils (or highlights) and then use a mask on my own. That way I can leave the mask on as long as I want (for more intense cherry red haha) - dark hair ends up a really deep wine with the brighter red highlights.

Please give us some knowledge on the famous manic panic semi perm dyes! They're so vivid and tempting 😍 I've been staring at a tub of vampire red for over a year, but I'm too afraid to use it 😣 (coming from someone who lightened their hair a year ago with box dye 😂) idk red just screams damage to me, even though it's a semi
Hey Mell! I want to get bangs and layers but I am scared! I am used to my long hair and I don’t know what to do. Any tips to help it be not as scary? And how should I cut it? It’s fine/ medium wavy/curly hair. That is flat at the top.

Awesome video!! I didn't know damaged hair was negatively charged!
I'm excited for this video ❤️
I learned that hair depositing masks do not cover grey hairs. This is helpful because I'm usually the one helping my mom with her greys and we have experimented with many different kinds of colors, not all of them worked out!
Will it blend them at all? For some scattered grays
OMG your hair at the beginning it’s so cute I need a tutorial
Happy texture Tuesday!! Love scientify Mel! I'm tempted 2 do a new hair color but I'm afraid! So this helps
Just saying…I love your nail color!
thank you beautiful!!
Any product suggestions to finding a positively-charged cream bleach? I had no idea there were different types. I've used the most popularly available bleaches over the years to rid myself of temporary dye, most unsuccessfully...so where do I find this other kind of bleach?
You taught me how to factor in the weather more into my routine, sounds obvious but 😅
My hair is bleached, I use the NIC deep conditioner. I have also used Curlsmith bond curl rehab salve. Is one better than the other.
From this I learned that you don't need to have "dirty" hair to dye it. I was lied too and feel so sorry for my stylist touching my greasy hair 🤣
I've learned to not be afraid of dying your hair...I'm a dirty blonde but love being blonder 😝 as long as you take care prior and after dying your hair, your curls will be safe! Invest in good masks!
Thanks for disclaimer .
I learned to hand it over to professionals when it comes to coloring my hair 😂 i always mess it up when i do it myself 🤷
I love the idea of color masks but they're unfortunately not for me as i naturally have dark brown hair.. maybe one day if i be bold enough to bleach it 🤔
Hi there!!! What lipstick is scientify Mell wearing??? Cause gurl! ps-love this video and all the others! I always learn so much! Thank y'all ❤️
I’m so glad I learned that adding semi permanent color isn’t worth it with my already dark hair
Can you recommend the pure pigments used to blend with conditioner?
May I know what is your color in this video and what did you use please :) I love the color of your hair so much !
I learnt dying your hair doesn't have to be permanent and can be fun
Could you list some bleaching creams with the Sodium/Potassium ingredients in them? Thank you!!
I'm waiting for this too. I've googled it but some of the dyes that come up I've tried before and they didn't work like she said it would. So I hope she updates with recommendations too!
And whether they are the same or less damaging than bleaching!
scientify Mell went off on this video
I’ve learned that you have to read your hair on when it needs protein or moisture (2/3)
Thoughts on overtone?
I still have no idea what to use to get the Bordeaux out of my hair. Any product recommendations? Thanks!
What does red fade to typically? Does the color wheel help predict how your hair will fade?
It depends on the undertones, some will fade to pink and others will fade to orange.
1) don’t let non curlies do your hair 2)omg be careful w temp colors AND color masks which aren’t so temp or easy as they seem! 3)aloe Vera isn’t scary
What about demi permanent dye?
Thanks for this information! I have been researching the temporary colors and the reviews. I have decided against doing temporary colors to my hair because my hair is slightly damaged and I don't want something that is going to turn into a hair horror story.
Under tones are so difficult for me to understand until this video!
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing ❣️☺️
Thanks for watching!
4:06 My gosh You're both so radiantly beautiful and majestic 💗💗💗💗😍😍😍😍😍😍
Happy text your Tuesday! I have level 2/3 natural dark Brown hair, I don't think a color mask would work on me. :( Still, happy to see another entertaining and educational video from one of my favorite curlies.
I'm also quite dark - I'll often pay for a salon to do foils (or highlights) and then use a mask on my own. That way I can leave the mask on as long as I want (for more intense cherry red haha) - dark hair ends up a really deep wine with the brighter red highlights.
Favorite mask too 🥰
I didn’t know about mixing dye with a mask.
Mel- this comes from a place of love… you guys need to work on the audio quality to match the beautiful video. Still Love u guys.
thank you for the thougtful input love, we've tried different mics/options but we know this is something we need to work on. coming soon
@@ManesByMell I don’t think it’s your mic at all… I think it’s bc bathrooms echo. I was hoping to leave a comment w a poss solution too but I couldn’t find anything that would fit your format short of building a special bathroom studio! N separate areas for style vs wash… I still love u guys
