    I was only able to learn this solo thanks to Geoff Wallick, whose videos I watched over 100 times. For the notes I couldn’t decipher, I was lucky enough to find manymidi.com, the site of the insanely talented Elmo Peeler, who sells note-by-note transcriptions. The version I play combines their suggestions-plus a couple notes I got in the habit of playing. Please check them out here:

    ~ With eternal gratitude to Billy Powell and Lynyrd Skynyrd-and the hours of joy they still bring to so many!~

    Sorry about shakiness during demo! It’s gone in tutorial section.

    Wow! If you had been my college piano professor, teaching me usable blues scales and chords instead of learning inane pieces by rote for a recital, my life might have taken a different path.

      I learned the traditional way also. Didn’t discover blues/boogie till MUCH later. Worth the wait though!😂 Have fun-and thanks!

    It’s been a challenge to continue learning over the course of 6 months bc we don’t always play and I forget
    The video is a great refresher

    OMG I am your biggest fan as I’ve played piano with plain chords and right hand melody notes (and by ear) since being a kid… and at 54, I am relearning my lost quasi-skills with a new old piano and a Casio keyboard… I am trying to learn all my favorites by notes (not just chords by ear) and I stumbled upon Billy Powell’s name and Lynyrd Skynyrd … and clicked to see …. a girl who goes by “Piano Annie” and OMG! I love love your moniker … because it reminds me of the old Wild West and saloon pianists! I thought no way could I pick this up… when I can’t even get through all of Moonlight Sonata…but for some reason, your clear and attentive details in your tutorials and the way my fingers (i guess naturally) want to go…. I am surprised to see I can grasp the big ideas from your remarkable hints and tips (like the “big slam” or “slide into” or the E - A toggle.” I am in the infancy of this kind of music, and know it will take me months or more to be able to play it without stopping, analyzing…. And cussing-- but I wanted to tell you thank you so so so MUCH !! For giving me hope and getting me strong enough to know I can do it (❤❤❤) triplet hearts to you -- Piano Annie! You’ve made a big difference for me…. Knowing the place I should start at and the inspiration to work for it! Xoxox tracy

      Hi Tracy, Thank you so much! You are too kind! I absolutely encourage you to keep doing what you're doing--because I did the EXACT same thing. It's crazy to be able to play almost anything with music, but when you try to do something simple without music, it engages entirely new parts of your brain. I learned a lot from UA-cam, so I'm glad you have found UA-cam as a resource. There are great teachers on here. Please let me know if you get the solo down, and best of luck to you in your piano pursuits!🎹😎😊

    Just what I was looking for, thank you for this. Would love to see a video on what type of bass you would play on this song. I'm assuming some 8 to the bar boogie line which is a bit tougher for me in A...

    Annie, Good job on this. It's an iconic solo, and you are one of the few that has bothered to pass some tips on to the masses for actually trying to play it. I was a bit disappointed that you didn't include the ending lick in your very complete tutorial. I believe Elmo Peeler did include it in the score you bought from him. I have a few notes and rhythms different than you... if you're interested, I could send a pdf of what I am hearing in my transcription.

    Loving this...I am transposing it to E :) do you ever call out the changes...like the 1 chord, the 4 the 5, back to 1? I'm kinda seeing it and hearing it. Thank you for the great breakdown!!

      I do not. I guess the guitarist was doing it along with Billy Powell, but Billy played it with just one hand. If you're playing alone, you could certainly add that in (and if you do, I'd love to hear it or see a video!)

    • @PianoAnnieTutorials
      @PianoAnnieTutorials  8 місяців тому +1

      I used the UA-cam feature that lets you play videos of the song at slower speeds. If I remember, you can slow it down on your phone with more options than you can on a computer. Once you work from 75% to 90%, you’ll quickly get to 100!

    Thank you so much for doing this tutorial, but could you do one on Billy Powell’s improvisation? He done this on Austin city limits please please please.

    • @PianoAnnieTutorials
      @PianoAnnieTutorials  5 місяців тому

      Do you read sheet music by any chance? If so, you can ask Elmo Peeler to create sheet music for it. He’s at manymidi.com and he accepts custom requests. He’s super-talented. I don’t have a great ear so while I could figure out some parts, I’d need the sheet music or a good video of him playing the improv to figure it out. If you get the sheet music and need help, let me know!

      I'm jealous of your skills! So you probably know this, but if you go to this video of Billy Powell's performance - ua-cam.com/video/lyUhqSW1YIo/v-deo.html - you can watch (and listen) to him play in slow motion. You hover over the video, then click on "Settings," which is a gear symbol. Then click "Playback Speed." You can choose .25, .5, or .75 speed. Even better, if you're watching on a computer rather than a phone, you have more options for slowing it down. Here's how: Once you're in the "Playback Speed" menu, you'll see a "Custom" option in the upper right corner. Click on that and you can slow it to whatever speed you want. Perhaps between watching him play and hearing it slowly, you'll be able to play it! Hope this helps 😊🎹
