On the anniversary of the so-called Double Event, the brutal murders of Liz Stride in Dutfield's Yard off Berner Street and Catherine Eddowes in Mitre Square in the early hours of the morning of 30th September 1888, Edward Stow revisits the crime scenes to re-investigate these terrible crimes.
He also looks at the origins of the term the 'Double Event' and retraces the footsteps of the killer through the streets of the East End.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Liz Stride and Catherine Eddowes.

Compelling case for Letchmere, except for 2 things. 1) Witness statements appear to describe someone who looked more like George Chapman than Lechmere. 2) Did Lechmere have the required skill / anatomical knowledge? Timings and witness statements could be inaccurate and the medical skill needed could be overstated so I'm open to his candidacy. Lack of any blood on hands after Polly Nichols is an issue though

    • @Alex_K221
      @Alex_K221 6 місяців тому +2

I’m a layman but I can try to answer these:
      1. Witnesse statements can and often are unreliable. They very easily could be describing Cross, Chapman, and anyone else
      2. The police at the time were not entirely subscribed to the idea that the ripper had anatomical knowledge, since most of their suspects lacked this, and Thomas Bond thought he didn’t have such knowledge. If we go under the assumption that he did, then Cross still fits because his family had ties to the horse slaughter business and he (as part of his job) would likely be familiar with cutting up meat. This is however a hotly debated question.
      3. As for lack of blood there’s also Robert Paul’s testimony where he was touching the body for signs of life. He says he saw no blood. And PC Mizen didn’t remark about any blood on Cross nor Paul. I hope this helps, sorry for the lengthy reply but I don’t have time to make this shorter.

Interesting video. I really like the "on location" videos on JTR as it gives us some perspective on distances, neighborhood, other points of intrest etc.
I wonder why you only describe the man Israel Schwartz saw as broad shouldered since his description was much more detailed.
I'm not on the Lechmere wagon but I try to keep an open mind and will be looking at all your other videos; Keep up the good work.
On a side note : I have serious doubts about Stride being a Ripper victim at all. I know she is included in the canonical five, but the method and knife used seems wrong and if it wasn't for the killing of Catherine Eddowes shortly after and the infamous 'double event" letter, I wonder how we would look at her now. I realise you try to link Lechmere to the site of her murder with his mother living nearby and himself living in the vicinity in the recent past, but I'm curious to know if you think Stride was in fact slain by JTR.

Another detailed account, and very practical evidence to back up Lechmere as the most likely suspect.
I see mitre Square looks very different now, I was staying in a hotel near Mitre Square in 2017 I believe, and noticed building work going on, I asked one of the builders what work was taking place, and he replied that the Square was being up dated, and the old street cobbles removed and replaced by paving slabs, It seemed such a shame to me, so I asked could I have 2 cobbles for samples purposes, and so I took two from the pile very near to the corner of where poor Catherine had passed on.

I always wonder why the Liz Stride murder is included in the Canonical Five whereas Martha Tabram, who was stabbed thirty nine times, is not. The murder of Stride seems very similar to that of Frances Coles who was found with her throat cut (and had no body mutilations). However, Coles is not regarded as a JTR victim. Alice McKenzie also had her throat cut and she too is not regarded as a JTR victim. If Eddowes had not been killed on the same night, would Stride still be treated as a JTR victim?

  • @michaeldavid6832

The direction in which the "endings" happened matches that pattern for someone who wanted to try to throw police off the trail. Police would be able to plot a direction the criminal traveled (from first victim to second) and the Ripper would've known that. He would've committed the second in a direction as close as possible to a path 180 degrees away from his house -- without backtracking.
That's what the round trip looks like. The 2nd "ending" happened exactly at the Rippers turning point -- if he was Lechmere. He would've never planned a direct backtracking route to his home (obviously) because that route was already discovered (he had been interrupted). He'd have plotted the next closest route -- preferably with an intended victim on the apex of that intended journey.
That location is literally at the turning point on his route home and his home is roughly 180 degrees away from that last corner. Even if you didn't know the blue and yellow routes (to Lechmere's home), you'd extrapolate a change of direction because he turned to his right in the last leg of the red route. You'd naturally assume he would continue down that direction of travel (and we knew the direction in which he traveled and he would'nt be backtracking) until he could get out of line of sight quickly -- the first right taken on the blue route was the fastest route home which was out of line of sight of the crime scene.

It's a macabre subject and an uncomfortable thing to consider...but the nature of the mutilations and other marks on the womens bodies are important in understanding the killer. Surely your exhaustive efforts and your presentations have found the most logical culprit, and we all thank you, Mr. Stow. I am hoping that an equal examination into the nature of the forensic pathology and the killers likely psychological issues could be given consideration. I realize that there are limitations in this because of UA-cam guidelines, but this aspect of the case is often overlooked. I am not as learned in the subject as you, and living across the pond I have no idea what London culture is like today, let alone Victorian times. But I believe the killer (Lechmere) was likely well read, confident in his intellect, and likely looked at himself as an artist. There might be more clues in his letters, the graffiti, and the mutilations if one were to take the same exhaustive look at such things. If not on your channel, could you perhaps point me to a few books on this? Again, thank you for your great videos!

Lechmere upset leaves and seeing Stride is struck to take out his frustration. Stride could very easily have been an impulse kill instead of planned out. So he's 'on edge' and nervous to begin with. And then suddenly potential witnesses on the street. Interrupted he flees.. But wait, what if people saw him and could finger him. What better way to draw attention away from himself than to have "The Ripper" strike elsewhere that evening. To draw attention away from Brenner Street altogether.

Edit: People who arrogantly 'poo poo' the suggestion that Lechmere was the Ripper, but say someone else is, make absolutely no sense to me, because there is *logically,* NO OTHER suspect that can be placed at any crime scene, at the time of any murder, or that meets the same criteria that we now KNOW most Psychopathic, serial killers, nearly always meet.
It's glaringly obvious, that the reason these 'Lechmere skeptics' refuse to admit he's the most likely suspect, is because they either have a financial agenda like a book, either already published or that they are trying to get published, or they've simply just invested years of their lives believing in another suspect, and they're refusing to admit Lechmere is a much more likely candidate.

On the other hand it looks like Lechmere endeared himself to the authorities in any way he could before slipping away largely unnoticed in all the legal proceedings.

It seems likely he avoided giving his home address in open court.
Also he may have been known to the police under his previous address (he moved in June) and under his real name. Or he may have been known to other people under his real name as someone who brutalised prostitutes. There are many possible reasons why it could have assisted him by giving a different name which us why criminals often do it. It is a red flag.

@@11zanderman Mr. Stowe's friend, Christer Holmgren, elaborates further in his book, "Cutting Point". Only one of the several newspapers to report Lechmere's testimony at the inquest published his home address, while the rest did not - despite the fact that they published the address for every other witness. This is why it seems likely that he avoided giving his home address in open court - the one outlier could be due to an overzealous reporter asking a clerk for Lechmere's address.
Holmgren also notes that Lechmere showed up at the inquest in his work clothes as opposed to formal wear, as would have been expected of a witness at an inquest. Since his family would have noticed if he went out in his formal wear, it stands to reason that he didn't tell them he would be attending.
Long story short, the false name would keep his real name out of the papers and there's every indication he didn't want his real address in them, either; its quite likely, then, that he didn't want the people around him to know he was linked to the case.

@@mathewlawton8944 actually i would argue that the fact his stepfather Cross had been a policeman was precisely the reason Charles gave this surname at the inquest, to garner sympathy, for instance from a bobby: " your name is cross? I had a colleague ten years ago who was named thomas Cross, are you related?
      Yes, he was my father..."
The important thing about this half lie about his name is that it gave him an advantage over the police in case someone was ever sent at his home or workplace to arrest him. He would say and be able to prove it , that his name was lechmere, and every neighbor or coworker would concur. Giving him time to get away. After all it worked so well for nearly 100 years. And it was not even a full blown lie in case he was ever caught.
Also there is a very interesting passage in the book "cutting point". It turns out there was a third time lechmere may have used the surname Cross, and once against at an inquest, and about a suspicious death. (The first time was at a census while living with thomas Cross, the second time at the polly Nichols inquest). A guy called Charles Cross and working at pickfords (and who did not give his address at this inquest, contrary to all other witnesses) was accused of killing a 4 year old boy with his cart in december 1876 (page 98). The father of the boy was convinced it was not an accident. Charles Cross was once again able to talk his way out of trouble at the inquest...what are the odds?

Only 10 or so in the subsequent 7 years up to 1986. Then nothing until his arrest 30+ years later. The same thing with BTK, Denis Rader. Killings between '74 and '86 then nothing for 20 years. It's believed he was entering another cycle when he was arrested in the early 2000s, as he re-established communication with police. It's also a persistent myth that serial killers do not change their modus operandi. In fact, it's frequently the case that they do. BTK, Golden State Killer, Richard Ramírez, Yorkshire Ripper, Zodiac .....off the top of my head. All used varying methods over their "campaigns."

    why did lechmere stop killing

    • @Shaeniff
      @Shaeniff 3 роки тому

That was my original question. And the answer was he didn't necessarily. The police stopped counting because the guy who replaced the fired chief of police didn't want to get fired. I just watched a video about a woman who faced a ripper-like attack that she fended off a short time after the canonical five murders. She tried to report it to the police, but they didn't take her seriously. There were several killings before and after those canonical five, including torso killings (see other videos on this channel). It would make sense that those he took out on the road he couldn't carry, especially if he didn't have his butcher's cart. Those who followed him home, he could do whatever he liked with. Then, he'd take them around his meat delivery route and dispose of them, with the human blood on his apron blending in with animal blood. If it was Lechmere, he didn't begin with the official five nor end with them. That does not mean he was the only killer in the area. But the similar killings stopped around the time Lechmere would have been around sixty, likely too old to continue hauling around bodies.

Enjoy your videos but you are wrong about Lechmere. He lived a good, long, productive life. He had the misfortune to find a body minutes after the murder. Jacob Levy is a much more plausible suspect, and your video here completely glosses over the "three men" who witnessed a man talking with Eddowes. One of those men was almost certainly Jacob Levy's cousin Joseph, and newspaper accounts of the time noted that Joseph Levy seemed like he was hiding something. He was hiding the fact that he saw his cousin Jacob with Eddowes a minute or two before her murder. He refused to testify against his cousin. Not that there is any way to prove it but I would bet any amount Jacob Levy is the perp. Crazy: check. Knew the area: check. Had a relative on Goulston street: check. Motive: check. Skilled with a knife: check. Witnessed at the scene of a murder: most probably check. Jacob Levy was almost certainly guilty of Eddowes murder and thus the four others. He was Jack the Ripper.

We will never know who the Ripper was. I can't say he wasn't Lechmere, or Levy for that matter.
However, Lechmere did not merely find a body. He was seen by someone else lingering by it at or near the time of death and was certainly there for a considerable time. Nobody else was in sight or sound. He also kept things from the police. His routes to work and his social life hang outs also closely connect him to 5 (6 if we include Tabram) murder spots.
By the way, Dennis Rader and Joseph DeAngelo stopped killing and also lived long productive lives... until they were finally caught decades later.
