    Where would you most like to visit that I showed in this Amsterdam neighbourhood?

      That pool looked really cool - was it empty? Also loved seeing De Hallen tram station, and how they kept the details in there, such as the old tracks in the floor. I'd love to see Qnoop too, that's such a cool idea of buttons on socks!! Are you still in the Netherlands?

      Hi Amisha! No, the pool is just for show - but still fun and an excuse to call it a 'pool bar.' ;) I love the story that inspired it and how they kept so many of the original details. No, we're not in The Netherland anymore - there's a bit of a delay in posting :) I always keep my Instagram (instagram.com/eileenaldis/) and Twitter (twitter.com/eileenaldis) profiles updated with our current whereabouts though - Berlin at the moment! :)

      Wildernis and De Hallen. I knew about the food hall in De Hallen but did not realize they had stores and a market outside. The store that had the unique gifts will be my first stop in De Hallen. I liked the sock store as well.

    Happy to see that Oud West still looks and feels like Holland!
    The Dutch seem to do things not only for personal gain…But also for the public good.
    The plant shop was an example… And good design is everywhere…signage, shops…fixtures and furniture.
    It’s nice to see a restaurant praised for being cosy and nice…As well as having good food! Fun video!

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  7 років тому

      Absolutely - the public good is very important and good design is all around. Glad you liked the neighbourhood tour :)

    Would you recommend staying in an AirBNB in Jordaan instead of closer to city center?

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  6 років тому

      Hi Nick,
      Jordaan is closer to the city centre than Oud West, I'd say. It'd be a great place to get an Airbnb!

      @phnijman 6 років тому

      Hi Nick, or go outside the Ring / Ringroad A10. Prices drop dramatically and connection to the centre by tram are good

    Hi Eileen! Another great video! I loved de Hallen as well. While visiting last August, I met a friend of a friend (who lives on the Prinsengracht), and he showed me around Oud West as well as across the Ij (reached by the ferry). Have you walked/shopped Haarlemerstraat, above the Jordaan? It's not a very long street, but it's array of shops (I loved the shop, "Six & Sons") as well as cafés/restaurants - my favorites being "Abinish" and ""Greenhouse Munchies". www.yourlittleblackbook.me/en/haarlemmerbuurt-guide/

      Hi Thomas! Thanks a lot - so glad you enjoyed it :) August must be a lovely time of year to visit Amsterdam. I don't think we walked that street but I appreciate the recommendations for another time :)

    Vondelpark isn't the largest park in Amsterdam - de Amsterdamse Bos has that honour.

      That one is more on the edge of the city, right? How nice for a city to have so many large parks and green spaces. I love it.

    Dear Eileen, love your energy, but I do find it problematic that you try to frame bits of Amsterdam as mainly places for consuming (trinkets, food, "art"). You also make a mention of the current De Hallen having been occupied by squatters and then the neighbors in Kinkerburt having saved it and re-purposed it. This is, of course, not the case. It's less a matter of neighbors re-purposing and more a matter of conglomerates pitching what is considered creative and easily digestible. The shop you list in the beginning "Wilderniss" is actually made in a former squat of a Tetterode building, where artists fought to have affordable housing in order to be able to focus their energies less on paying rent and more on investing their time in making. This is real Amsterdam history.
    You seem to go about the city of Amsterdam guiding yourself by “top 5 things to do when in…” kind of literature and less by talking to the locals which helped create the places and which in the end were mostly taken out of the neighbourhoods because of financial interests and are still being pressed by them. While consuming might be fascinating, it’s not a means of expression. Consider, when pitching this, what those “cute” stores displace and also look a bit more into the history of the city to see how much it changed so that you can have a latte by the side of the canal, while artists can’t really afford one.
