I worked there quite a bit in the mid 1970's. Museums: Rijksmuseum for all the Dutch Masters including Night Watch by Rembrandt. Also, Rembrandt House museum. Food: Indonesian food was top notch. Beer: hard to beat. Architecture: the whole old city is a living museum! I loved my time there and loved the culture.

A few things to highlight: (1) museums - with the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum you cannot miss out on Dutch masters or Impressionists (Anne Frank House here too) (2) Indonesian Food: as one of the early places for Indonesian spices, they have some of the best Indonesian food. I really enjoyed Bojo; (3) ignoring coffee houses and places that sell legal soft drugs ignores what many go to Amsterdam for; (4) Red Light District - while prostitution is legal and regulated within much of Europe, this area of Amsterdam is unique with the red lights just to walk around; and (5) windmills - outside Amsterdam at zaanse schans area. Well worth a trip out by train and walk.

It's not regulated as much as people think. It's a mess. I would strongly urge people to stay away. Most of the women "working" there have been trafficked. The area is monitored by gangs, mafia and the hell's angels, all just trying to make sure their "assets" are working and making them money.
The museums were my number one thing to do while I was there last year.
About the pancake-place opening at 10PM: in the Netherlands, we usually don't consider pancakes or poffertjes to be breakfast - to us it is lunch or dinner. Similarly, pastry might be used as a dessert in the US, but we mainly eat it in between meals.

Anthony would be very sad about abusing his name like this in a video that does everything he would frown upon. Like visting all tourist traps, avoiding red light district, lacking historical information and judge real Dutch food without any sampling.

I need to get back to Amsterdam someday! I only went for 24 hours on my way to Austria a few years ago, so I only had a chance to walk around the city and check out the Anne Frank house (highly recommend!). I would love to go back to enjoy the fries and the stroopwafel as well as take a canal cruise!
So you had a layover in Amsterdam just like Bourdain! The Anne Frank house is so memorable; glad you were able to go. Next time definitely indulge in some of the fries and street food!
For pancakes, I always recommend the Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs! After over 8 years of living here, it's still the one I hope people visit.

Just a quick correction on this video. Traditional Dutch food is very basic, true. The Dutch food scene, however, is FANTASTIC! Why? Because you will find ALL cuisines from all over the world in restaurants in Amsterdam/the Netherlands. Fun fact Amsterdam does Kickboxing better than anywhere in the world. The world famous Mejiro Gym is in the center and very welcoming to beginners. Highly recommend for anyone who was ever interested as Amsterdam is the mecha of kickboxing

I really liked living in Amsterdam.
Finding a place to rent was quite difficult. I would plan ahead on that next time.

What I want to try is the Bike rides, chocolate, and dessert. I hear it's a good workout, and you can get just about anywhere. Also I don't smoke (weed)...maybe Switzerland is better for me.
I have to say something about Amsterdam you look like you hit a new level. It's probably your calling to live there.

The Ottoman Sultan gave it as a gift, tulips originated from Turkey. They were very precious and thats what royals gave each other as gifts as tulips. Dutch culture did an excellent job of making tulips known and admired worldwide.

Awesome video .With only one and half day, I did the canal, floating flower market, gastro experience: the stroopwaffle, awesome coffee, frites, and the vegan junk food bar (all plant based) colorful and incredibly delicious. Of course I saw many of the museums and beautiful buildings from outside. Great city, must go back.

lovely tour of Amsterdam! A city I would love to visit. My trip to Greece a couple of months ago flew through Schiphol...on the way home we were delayed and missed our connection so we stayed over night. Unfortunately, got to the hotel around 9pm and had to catch a shuttle at 6am for the airport.. next time!

My trip was a little different. Less food but one thing in common was cycling, I went as far as I could out of the city & it's beautiful in the outer suburbs. I only went to the Sex Museum, it was weird but funny & I'm glad that was the one I picked. There's a lot of talented tattoo artists, Salon Serpent is one of the most famous, started by Angelique - keep in mind it's best to book a few months ahead. Red light district is polarizing, depending on your personality - worth going anyway.

The first time I arrived in Amsterdam was at the airport because I needed to transfer to Frankfurt three years ago. Then on the third day, I decided to take the train from Frankfurt to Amsterdam. I just wandered and walked in the street and I found that so many bicycles were alongside the street. There was a little snow in the small park. So many tourists were walking on the main street near the train station and I visited the nearby museum. So many pigeons were flying in the square and so many shops where you could buy souvenirs. The streets were a little quiet and tranquil in the winter season. I walked for nearly 4 hours and felt it was a kind of comfortable journey. Then I was back in Frankfurt on the same day at night. It was a long time train trip but I felt so happy.

Umm! Cheese I'm on it! And a cruise on the canals looking at the unique houseboats. Partner up that cheese with a good bottle of wine and fresh bread and you have a most memorable trip, sliding along the waterways.

I love that we have the same favorite pancake place! I think you hit most of the highlights (except of course the numerous museums, but that would be a very long video!). Bike rides outside of the city center are a lot less stressful. It's also worth hopping on a ferry to cross the Ij, there's so much to do.
This is a good video but I would love to have known what you had in your pancakes and what you dipped your fries into!

Kristin. I know this question isn’t about Amsterdam but…could you name 3 or 4 places that are along the same cost of living as Mexico and Ecuador BUT that have good sidewalks? I have the slightest of walking issue that only affects sometimes but Mexico sidewalks scare me. Thanks!!! (Could it be Georgia or Spain?)
Hi Tammie, that's a good question... I don't often see places with good sidewalks. Probably the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland... places will good biking. Germany would be the most affordable with good sidewalks and bike paths. Certainly many places in the cities in Spain and Portugal, but also many narrow streets. I wish I had a better answer for you! Cyprus has good roads and sidewalks. Usually the more expensive places with more tax dollars have better sidewalks.

Is does need some annotations however.
1. pancakes are Dutch staple food, not "The one thing Amsterdam obviously known for".
Poffertjes are not pancakes, but a mini-version of the much larger 'poffer' or 'poffert'.
2. It was Carolus Clusius who introduced the tulips to The Netherlands in 1583.
Clusius was curator of the gardens of the Emperor of Austria. In 1593 Clusius became a professor at Leiden University and head of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden. In this botanical garden the first tulips were planted in the Netherlands in 1593.
Only the most western part of The Netherlands is suitable for the cultivation of tulips, since it requires sandy soil.
3. Gouda cheese is just one of the hundreds of different kinds of Dutch cheese. Originally from Gouda - not Amsterdam - the name now refers to the large wheel shaped variety.
4. the best chips are Belgian, not French or Dutch. The Dutch chips are just second to the Belgian ones.
The Dutch chips are not cut thick, thinner than the Belgian chips.
There are several Belgian chips shops in Amsterdam. Do compare.
5. do *not* rent a bicycle in Amsterdam. Even seasoned cyclists will have trouble in the Amsterdam traffic.
If you must, stick to the Vondelpark. But is that what you came to visit Amsterdam for?
7. Dutch markets are usually closed on Sundays.
Stroopwafels - pronounced 'stroapwahfles' - date back to 1810. Invented in Gouda - not Amsterdam - and then called 'poor people's biscuits', they were made from left over cookie dough.
8. Amsterdam was never one of the first coffee capitals of the world. The first 'coffee house' in The Netherlands opened in 1663 in Amsterdam. Followed a year later by a ' koffiehuis' in The Hague. Being expensive coffee was only for the happy few.
Today Amsterdam is also known for being the largest cacao port in the world, transporting 600,000 tonnes of cacao beans a year. You can visit the Chocolatemakers factory which is fully powered by solar energy.

*. if you visit Amsterdam during the winter month do eat 'snert' at the Amsterdam Historisch Museum.
**. most of Vincent van Gogh's paintings are not in the Amsterdam van Gogh Museum but in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, a 2 hours drive from Amsterdam. So don't waste your time standing in line in Amsterdam.

The best cheese you will find is on the outdoor market or specialised cheese shops.
How about Dutch farmers cheese?
The best tasting cheese ever.
The cheese shop you visited is a specialised tourist cheese shop.
Cheese especially made for tourists definately not representative for real tasty Dutch cheese.
The coffee is tasting great.
As for food there is lots to enjoy as well.
It boils down to choose the better restaurants.
Anyway there is a lots to enjoy in Amsterdam.
And above all this video is being presented in a very nicely attractive way.

Does anything compare to Europe? You have to experience it to believe it.
There’s nothing wrong with the food in The Netherlands. You can find virtually anything you want to eat in all the towns and cities. If you have been brought up on burgers, Pepsi and obesity maybe the food is too healthy for you and you might consider visiting a country that caters especially for heart disease, diabetes and the fuller waistline.

Herring...when I think of Amsterdam I have images of people throwing back their heads and sliding pieces of herring into their mouths. Is that still the case-herring stalls? Kristin, how far out do you post your videos-the weather looks too nice for end of November-are you actually in Portugal now? One last question-what are your preferences when it comes to accomodations? Opps, two more...where do you anticipate spending Christmas and where to after your 90 days are up in the Schengen zone?
