I’ve been studying my media technologies degree for a year and a half now my next assignment is to make a showreel, only issue is I had no footage apart from a 15 min documentary and some street interviews we did last year, this was honestly so helpful and I’m feeling a lot more confident now, my focus is social media marketing ideally for gaming, but I’m not allowed to grab gameplay stuff so have to grab footage from real life which isn’t a problem it’s certainly gonna take me a while tho 😅
This was brilliant! Thank you for your knowledge and sense of humor! Im currently taking an education "videomarketing in social media" and one of my to-do's this week is a showreel. Got a lot to learn, have to say that. Thanks tough! 😎
This was helpful. As were your other tip videos. I am looking to start doing this as a side gig and hopefully eventually full time. I am in my 40s and want to eventually make a career change. And freelance work gives me the flexibility I want. That said. How do I know I am ready to charge? I don't want to take someone's money and give them a crap product. Where are good places/ways to get feedback?
Glad it was helpful! You are ready when you think you are ready, working is only going to make yourself better, make sure to take a step back try and understand when some of your work is lacking and improve off it when you can!
Motivating to hear I'm not the only one in the same boat and giving this a try (heck, i'll be considered late 40s next year, lol) The crappy part is I was in the thick of it using photoshop, AE, Premiere early 2000s studying at a 3D animation school...it didnt go anywhere animation wise but i always loved the editing aspect of things. Aside from making the odd wedding slideshow for family/friends, i never really jumped back in to advance my skills in search of a career. Fast fwd 20 yrs, and it's amazing you can find work online compared to before having to apply to studios and post-production houses. With all of the AMAZING and giving creators out there like Charlie, it's been so productive learning this way compared to the old textbook, graphics magazine tutorials we were stuck with back then. Anyways, I hope it's going well for ya and that you've done a few gigs already!
Dude!!! Thank you so much. I’ve been scouring the crevices of the inter webs to come up short every time… until now. I’m a potential career jumper from retail hopefully into video editing 🤞🏻. I have only ultra minimal experience so I’m self teaching. You definitely have a new subscriber now!
can you create a video tutorial walking us through the entire process of how you edit your showreel using premiere pro like how you add text and great transitions
This was a GREAT help to me. I am new to the industry and do not have a ton of footage yet. Your video got my creative wheels turning, and I came up with something that I feel is pretty good, despite my lack of a proper portfolio. I was able to use all of my footage instead of using stock, a good chunk of it "personal" not pertaining to paid work. I am hoping I can share it with you for your feedback...
That was a good idea to make showreels for different niches. I am just starting out and was looking to make my first showreel. Thanks for the tips, man! I'm thinking that I'll create a mixed showreel to begin with then as I progress, I'll create others that are pacific(😅) to different sectors!

Jeez I needed this so bad lol. I edit for different twitch streamers and i've been trying to branch out to other companies, but I don't have any footage to use and this video has helped. Thanks for the vid! :D
Hey @Chrispyy_ Im actually interested in editing twitch streamers but how do you choose someone worth editing? Or are the streamers seeking an editor, that you were able to find your work?
@@nicoleonpolef1926 Well I was good friends with a popular overwatch streamer and she asked me to do her videos for about a year which is how i originally got started. After that I went over to twitter and searched for "I need an editor" or "need editor", sent them my reel, they would contact me back, we would discuss how they wanted their videos and pricing, and thats basically it. Twitter is your best friend when looking for streamers (or really anyone) who need editors and for me i try to target people who stream games that I play.
Great video Charlie. This was MASSIVLEY helpful. I have done client work but feel like they don't all work well in a show reel. Stock footage is a fantastic idea and Adrian is a great resource.
i opened new account of different freelancing sites, i tried to get projects from different parts of the world as a beta client haha no one came, i guess it's going to be stock Footage for showreels and my own youtube videos and commercials for samples 😔
It takes time and patience, starting out is the most painful part of freelancing, my first year I took home barely anything because of the competition!
Thanks for this great video and your insight. I'm just wondering about accreditation, copyright etc. Regarding the visuals, is it good practice to accredit as the footage is seen (I imagine this would be difficult to incorporate) or list the details at the end - or even have a portion of the frame dedicated to this info. I couldn't see any of this information on your showreel or is this not required on the sites you mentioned? Thanks again!

So your advice is to plagiarize a bunch of footage?
No, to use royalty free footage to show off your editing skills
