I love how embarrassed Bobby still gets when he's introduced. I don't think he every truly believed how great he really was. The classiest, most humble athlete I have ever known. And I had the privilege, no....the honor, of seeing him play. God truly blessed me as a sports fan to live in Boston and to witness some of the great sports moments I've lived thru. This truly is some place. Farewell to the greatest sports carhedral I have ever known. I still get teary eyed when I see Raymond Bourque helping Normand Leveille skate around the ok'd Garden....or should I pronounce it correctly.... The old Gaahhden ice for the final skate. I think I even miss the rats.
As a United States Marine grunt. been around most of the world. Other than being alongside my brother Marines the Boston Garden was my favorite place to be. The rush feeling inside you would get watching Bobby Orr swing around his net for one of his end to end.
Grew up in Northern New Hampshire and lucky enough to catch a few games at the Garden. Like Fenway Park, walking through the concourses, etc and then seeing the ice, seats, banners, the monster, field, seats, etc what a feeling. And man could the Garden get loud. Bobby Orr was the best ever to play but always a humble generous gentleman. The Bruins alumni bowing when he was introduced was just so awesome.
"And our next guest is the greatest player in the history of the National Hockey League" Wow! I got goosebumps hearing Fred Cusick say that. How fortunate I was to see him play. Incredible memories.
The best applause was the night they retired his number... Non-stop applause. Could not get the fans to stop applauding to start the ceremony. Truly legendary applause for a legendary player.
Btw....THAT'S how humble Bobby Orr was. Boston Garden? Best Ever Player?....no. My mother is here and THAT'S why it's a special night. :) #greatestever
This was a great ceremony: no laser beams, no pyrotechnics. Just class all the way. If you don't get get goosebumps when Bobby Orr is introduced, you are not a hockey fan.
Anybody who ever saw him play knows it's still true even all these years later. I believe Ken Dryden stated it best a few years after Orr retired. "He left no heirs," Dryden wrote.
I met Bobby at Blunt Park in Springfield Mass. when I was playing Hockey as a kid. He was my Idol growing up......the GREATEST hockey player EVER. I LOVED watching Wayne BUT.......put Orr at CENTER with Glen Anderson and Jarri Kuri as his wingers....with the modern equipment....modern surgery.... and Bobby would have scored 150 goals a season. The greatest PURE SKATER EVER!!!
Bobby Orr only played 10 years because of bad knees......He totally reinvented the defenseman position and really took the game into the modern era......A one man wrecking crew!......I truly believe he is the greatest player....and I've been a Ranger fan for over 50 years!!!!
Dryden and Shero knew how to stop him..Silliest thing ever labeling this guy the greatest of all time..He wouldn't have trouble scoring 10 goals in todays NHL
Bobby Orr, Dale Earnhardt Sr, Joe Montana, etc., the greatest at what they do are rarely say they are the best at what they do. Bpbby's humility was fully evident.
The old Gahden had such an aura about it. The place was just magical. The minute you walked into that building you just knew you were some place special. The Bruins 1929 Stanley Cup banner hanging up in the rafters was amazing to look at. And all the retired numbers of Bruins legends; Not to mention the all Celtics World Championship banners and Celtic legends. I could not get the smile off my face whild watching this video. Thanks for posting!
Bobby Orr should be called the only... Gretzky gets called the great one Mario gets called the magician.. but Bobby is the only one nobody changed the game of hockey like Bobby Orr... Never will you see a defenseman win the scoring title... Thanks for the memories Bobby, you are the only one you are the GREATEST.
@Lava1964 You can't really tell by the video, but the crowd was so loud when Fred Cusick was listing Bobby's accomplishments that you could barely hear him. It remains the loudest ovation I've ever heard when he walked out - more than a rock concert. What they call the Garden today will never allow the crowd to give a home-ice advantage like the old building.
Profiles in Hockey said it best; "Some players aspire to greatness but Bobby Orr was born great." As Bobby Hull said to his teamates who asked how to stop Bobby Orr, "just give Orr his own puck and we'll take ours and play at the other end" Orr was a threat to score from anywhere on the ice at any time. Orest Kindrachuk of Philadelphia Flyers said to me "Fred Shero" told us to hit his (Bobby's) knees". We felt bad about it later, but we had to do it to have a chance of winning the cup".
I am Kings fan. I hated the Bruins. I mean hated. But watching this ceremony jarred so many memories of my youth-- quite emotional. Bobby Orr is the greatest player to ever play in the NHL. I met him as a kid at the Forum. He was in the broadcasting area, which used to be open grandstands right with the fans. In between periods I walked into his row where he was broadcasting on a commercial break and audaciously introduced myself, asking for his autograph. He looked around trying to figure how I got to him. He nervously said he couldn't, he was working and was about to go back on the air. I said, "Come on Mr. Orr, your the best player I ever saw, I had to meet you. you're right here." He looked at me like-- come on kid, you're pouring it on a little thick. He reached for the business card I brought for him to sign and said, "Give it to me." He quickly signed it, shook my hand, and said, 'There you go. Now get out of here." I'm in my 60s now and I still have that autograph. It could never happen in today's world. A great memory with a great player and a humble gentleman.
I was there that night. Got the stub to prove it. I teared up when Raymond Bourque came out with Normand Leveille. A bright prospect who's career was cut short. Kinda like Bobby's. But this was a truly iconic night in Boston. Never to be forgotten. As I drove past the shell of the ok'd barn in later days, you could see into the building during it's tearing down. A local sports writer (I think it was Dan shaunessey of the globe) referred to it as peering into the soul of a dead body. You could feel the ghosts and the leprechauns of the greatest sorts venue of all time. Rivalled only by possibly the old Chicago stadium. I'll throw the Forum in for honorable mention.
Thanks for pointing this out to us. Yes, you are correct, it was a very classy gesture on Bourque's part. Lucky for us Hockey Fans our sport has a lot of classy yet humble Players, both past and present.
Bobby Orr was a very talented hockey player. Many people were expecting to see him in the 1972 in the NHL-USSR tournament. Unfortunately it didn't happen. A lot of injuries didn't let him to do it. He is such a handsome. I think it's Good blessed day 🙏 in this video.
IMAGINE, JUST TRY TO IMAGINE ... Gretzky playing on a bad knee. Playing defense. Fighting. Not having goons protect him. Blocking shots. And trying to move the puck the whole length of the ice ... --->>> WITH A BAD KNEE ! End of story... NOW LET'S IMAGINE BOBBY ORR WITH 2 PERFECT KNEES... playing offense. Hanging at the blue line. Not back checking. Playing 20 years. Do you think he would own the scoring title? Ya think?
I own the exact away jersey for Bobby Orr without the name on the back. A while back, I had a "serious" hockey fan say to me "Wow, that Bruin jersey is retro, whose number is that?" I asked how hold he was, and he told me "28." Sorry, a "serious" hockey fan does not get a pass on that one!
Jacobs asked him if it was okay to trade him to a team that had a great chance at winning a Cup. Jacobs knew it was time for a rebuild. Bourque said he would approve the trade and that's why he won the Cup. Jacobs had Bourques best interest in his heart.
Gretzky says Orr is the GOAT, even saying he was the fastest skater ever. Orr is the only player ever to do every skill at top speed. The GOAT, and it’s not even close.
ITA others were amazing, BUT Orr revolutionized an entire sport! (And to this day, no one has been able to do it as well as he did). PS this is from a die-hard Pats fan
Ellen W Now I know and can impress my nephew (15) who tells me to catch up, heck I already know LOL, BBL, TTYL. As for your Pat's if not for the cloud hanging Tom would go down as the greatest QB. Although as a kid Joe Montana was amazing.

Greatest ever....taking nothing away from Howe.
Great memories thank you Bruins

I was up in the balcony...when Orr came on the ice, it was the loudest ovation I ever heard.
You mean god
And when Bourque helped Normand Leveille skate
"And our next guest is the greatest player in the history of the National Hockey League" Wow! I got goosebumps hearing Fred Cusick say that.
How fortunate I was to see him play. Incredible memories.
ONE OF ONLY 2 MAN THAT CAN SAY HES THE BEST ALL TIME PLAYER IN THE WORLD...
The best applause was the night they retired his number... Non-stop applause. Could not get the fans to stop applauding to start the ceremony. Truly legendary applause for a legendary player.

What class! What tradition and dignity! What gentlemen! Hooray for the
Boston Bruins! Men like this aren't made anymore.
This was a great ceremony: no laser beams, no pyrotechnics. Just class all the way. If you don't get get goosebumps when Bobby Orr is introduced, you are not a hockey fan.
I'm not a hockey fan. And yes no goosebumps
Orr, greatest player ever and as Gordie Howe said, the greatest tragedy in league history that his career was cut so short.
4:03 seeing Bobby and Ray together is a masterpiece in its own right.
Robert Gordon Orr The greatest player EVER!!!!!
Amen
Amen! He surely was!
Anybody who ever saw him play knows it's still true even all these years later. I believe Ken Dryden stated it best a few years after Orr retired. "He left no heirs," Dryden wrote.

Bobby Orr only played 10 years because of bad knees......He totally reinvented the defenseman position and really took the game into the modern era......A one man wrecking crew!......I truly believe he is the greatest player....and I've been a Ranger fan for over 50 years!!!!

Bless his heart....he always wears his heart on the outside of his uniform.
"And our next guest is the greatest player in the history of the National Hockey League"
Awesome intro.
True intro
When I watched this live in 1995 I was wondering how they would introduce Orr. They got it right.
Well said!
Anatoli Tarasov -- the architect for the Russian Red Army and Olympic team -- said he said the best player who ever lived.
Dryden and Shero knew how to stop him..Silliest thing ever labeling this guy the greatest of all time..He wouldn't have trouble scoring 10 goals in todays NHL
WAS IT GOD
Trev Mac You are one A-Hole!

Bobby Orr should be called the only... Gretzky gets called the great one Mario gets called the magician.. but Bobby is the only one nobody changed the game of hockey like Bobby Orr... Orr-Richard-Howe-Gretzky-Lemieux-Hull-Beliveau-Lafleur-Bossy-Esposito...
top 4 easily are Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemieux based on best careers. Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe based on best player...
ORR....then the rest
Orr was the greatest.Am lucky to of seen him play.
Profiles in Hockey said it best;

Phliar scumbags.
Wow. That is a definition of leadership without any moral principles. Shero would have made a good Nazi.

Boston Garden - The Greatest place in NHL / North America to watch a game. If you are from Boston and know the Garden ... you get it !!
Watched this video from time to time over the last several years, the "here we go Bruins, here we go!" at 7:48 still gives me goosebumps every time.
RobMcDougall Just the way the noise echoed in that building was an atmosphere that cannot be created
Borque shou;d've been the one giving Esposito the framed #7, 1987 all over again.
I was there that night. Got the stub to prove it. I teared up when Raymond Bourque came out with Normand Leveille. A bright prospect who's career was cut short. Kinda like Bobby's. Not only that, Maple Leaf Gardens which is still standing
Don't forget the Olympia!!!
Thanks for pointing this out to us.
Yes, you are correct, it was a very classy gesture on Bourque's part.
Lucky for us Hockey Fans our sport has a lot of classy yet humble Players, both past and present.
class franchise. proud to be a life long bruins fan
The Old Boston Garden................how I miss it
I stand in amazement to my early hockey cards⚡😁🐺🇺🇸
I was there, the old garden was alive and loud!
I was the greatest night in hockey.
AT 5:15...GOD WALKS OUT ON THE ICE...
"BOBBY ORR CHANGED THE STYLE & SPEED OF HOCKEY FOR YEARS & GENERATIONS TO COME!"
"ORR TO ESPISITO!" & "THE BOBBY ORR STORY!" "I HAVE BOTH BOOKS!"
Bobby Orr, GOAT
Bobby Orr never ages.
Ya think?
Can you imagine the Celtics ceremony? It would take hours to lower all the banners
"What's orr's best move? Putting on his fucking skates."
- Gordie Howe
Gordie would never have dropped the F bomb.
thats right bow your heads to the great bobby orr....he is the real king..
Seen a lot of great games in that building and was sad when they tore it down. Got over it quickly with the new fleet center.....
how can you not love bobby orr ...
I watched Bobby Orr play I am totally convinced he was the greatest
I own the exact away jersey for Bobby Orr without the name on the back. A while back, I had a "serious" hockey fan say to me "Wow, that Bruin jersey is retro, whose number is that?" I asked how hold he was, and he told me "28." Sorry, a "serious" hockey fan does not get a pass on that one!
wow a young Ray Bourque on the bench in 6 yrs he will have the cup
5 orrs vs 5 Gretzkys not even a game
Robert Gordon Orr and George Herman Ruth changed their sports more than any athletes ever
Loved all of it but best thing was Normand Levielle in the middle of all the greats!
GOAT…..PERIOD!
Terry O'Rielly......I was breaking up the right wing and I heard skates cutting up the ice, I turned around and it was Bobby Orr.....
Bobby has the eyes 👀 of a winner 🏆 🥇
Gretzky and LeMieux played against far inferior competition than Orr.
#4 was and still is the greatest, hands down.
no NHL team has the star power of the Bruins. 04:15 is what true greatness is all about
The sound on the video doesn’t even come close to how loud it was when in the Garden when they announced Bobby Orr
love to see any player at any ara at any time go one on one with orr...be fun to watch.....my money is on orr
Bobby Orr; the Classy, Humble GOAT
G O A T .... is there really anything more to say ... #4
Geez! That guy behind Phil's left shoulder during his intro needs about 19 Ambien lol
The man never talk much ..never had to..did all his talking on the ice....
Incredible alumni lineup. How hard was it for Raymond to leave such a tradition rich club.
Bourque is a Bruin for life - always was, always will be.
easy to win a cup
Jacobs asked him if it was okay to trade him to a team that had a great chance at winning a Cup. Jacobs knew it was time for a rebuild. Bourque said he would approve the trade and that's why he won the Cup. Jacobs had Bourques best interest in his heart.
+124 for a season enough said
Not only that, his defense partner, Dallas Smith, was +94 that year. It's the fourth-highest plus-minus total of all time.
Simply the best........gretzky can't touch this man!!!!
I went to school with Espisito's and Hodge's kids
Imagine Bobby playing 20 yrs with good knees, just try imagining for a second. How many goals, assists and points?
Gretzky would still have more you can't compare a center and defensive player not fair to Orr or Gretzky
@@ryanblaney2193 not fail to Wayne
Gretzky says Orr is the GOAT, even saying he was the fastest skater ever. Orr is the only player ever to do every skill at top speed. The GOAT, and it’s not even close.
Bobby Orr = Hockey God!!
Wayne Gretzky = Forever number 2...never the greatest!!
Garden Fans would never let him forget HE IS HOCKEY ROYALTY !
Such a class act !!
best team in history
Can you imagine Orr in the early to mid 80s with messier Anderson kurrie coffey . He would have had 200pt seasons every year
Bobby Orr. The best that ever played.
All the bruins bowing to Orr / awesome!
"BOBBY ORR IS A Humble MAN BUT A BAD ASS ON THE ICE!" "ALL A THESE Guys WORKED GREAT TOGETHER!"
What a Bobby Orr moment...
the greatest ever..........................
at 5:20 bow you heads to the real great one #4 bobby orr
How anyone can say ORR is not the greatest player ever, not just in the NHL, is beyond belief.
ITA others were amazing, BUT Orr revolutionized an entire sport! (And to this day, no one has been able to do it as well as he did). PS this is from a die-hard Pats fan
Ellen W What is ITA?
ITA=I totally agree :)
Ellen W Now I know and can impress my nephew (15) who tells me to catch up, heck I already know LOL, BBL, TTYL. As for your Pat's if not for the cloud hanging Tom would go down as the greatest QB. Although as a kid Joe Montana was amazing.
Glad to help. As for TB12, anyone with half a brain already KNOWS he is the greatest QB to ever play the game PERIOD. Even if you believe that deflated nonsense, the fact is he scored the bulk of the points AFTER the balls were replaced. Then factor in that the opposing teams balls were also deflated (due to weather), 2 gauges that varied used, and many more factors & I am certain at some point, when jealousy ends, history will support his earned greatness!
at 5:15 god walks on the ice...how great thou are. ...
Regardless of what Tom Brady ever did here or any one else before of after No one will ever come to Bobby Orr means to this tow. SIMPLY THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about the infamous Kraut line
Robert G. Orr.....the "G" stands for God.
Orr- The greatest!
Bobby Orr=Goat of Hockey
Bobby Orr is the greatest hockey player of all time
Bucyk, 2 two time all star, just two!
DAMN RIGHT!!!! Eddie Shore's #2 should be retired league wide as well!
it would of been scary to see orr play with two good knees
The 76 Canada Cup was a joke of a tournament designed to get back at the Russians after they humiliated all of the Canadian players in the Summit Series and the Russians were well aware of that fact so they sent their lower level team to play in the Canada Cup against the 18 Hall of Fame Canadian players. They gave Orr the mvp about two months before the puck dropped. Orr was outscored in goals 5-2 and equaled in points total (9) by a Russian player by the name of Victor Zhluktov! He outscored Orr and Potvin in goals and tied them in points (9) while playing in two less games and they still gave Orr the MV Pity award!? Hmmmmm!
HAAAAA HAA HA HAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAA HA HAA HAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAA HAAAAAA HA HA HAAAAA HAAAA HAAA WHAT A GOOF
What about the 72 series?
Even the Russians agreed with Orr being named MVP, so who the Hades are YOU, punk?
i started a joke.......
good day mr trump....ass hole as allways
Old time hockey...Like Eddie Shore
Greg Sullivan putting on the foil coach.
#2, HOFer Eddie Shore, who may have been the very first defenseman to consistently rush the puck the length of the ice.
The Greatest One.
At around 5:00 god steps on the ice
