I am a Habs fan from Montreal. It would thus be easy for me to claim that although Orr was great, Lemieux or Gretzky were better (or, to pick up Habs players, Lafleur, or Maurice Richard). But I can't. Bobby Orr was, simply put, the greatest thing that ever hapenned to this game called hockey. There never was a player like him before, and there hasn't been one since.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this. This applause is genuine, direct from the hearts of those that saw him play, wearing the Black and Gold. We love you Bobby!
Wow ... what thunderous ovation -- and Bobby deserved every minute of it! The legend of Bobby Orr runs so much deeper than his finesse, skill and epitomizing the ultimate athlete. By all accounts Bobby is also a genuinely charitable and kind, humble, moral and decent man ... a respectable role model that any parent would welcome for their children to look up to.
Bobby was just mesmerizing... Anytime he was on the ice, you never took your eyes off the game. Yes, he is the greatest! And this was the greatest retirement ceremony evaaah!!!
I say this as a Flyer Fan...Bobby Orr was the Greatest Hockey Player of all time....and indeed, one of the greatest athletes of all time.....his name is not out of place among the Mantles, Pele's, Chamberlains, Montana's, and any other sport immortal...Bobby is amongst them easily!! And that is no exxageration!
Two reasons why this ovation went on for so long. One, because we never had the chance to see his career through to the end because of one SOB who stole him from us and sent him to Chicago. With all due respect to them. Secondly, to tell him we love him. And thank you. I truly pity people who never saw him play.
Agreed. The only part of the entire ceremony was seeing that lying, evil POS, Eagleson. But, if you believe in karma (and I do), Eagleson got what was coming to him, went to prison, stripped of all his hockey-related accolades. Bobby, on the other hand, is now a principal in a successful hockey agency business, representing some of the game's top stars (e.g. Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall, etc.), with a net worth of approx. $35 million.
I was a Leafs fan, hated him, he scared me, he make me sick to my stomach every time he touched the puck, but I grew to love him Got to meet him, melted right in front of him and started to cry. Like a baby. Was like seeing a physical angel in human form. The greatest of all time. Any sport.
I must have seen this video a hundred times and I end up teary eyed every time . The guy was one of a kind original as classy off the ice as on it..!! God bless Bobby Orr!
Greatest of all time. The fans didn't stop screaming. You'll never see another fan reaction like this towards a player in the history of all professional sports. He was a gentleman of the game and the greatest hockey player of all time.
Bobby Orr wining the Art Ross Trophy in 1970, would be like a pitcher wining the Home run title in Baseball. Sorry but Gretzky does not have a Norris. I think Orr is the best player of all time. Period.
I was quite weatlhy at the time. after it became known Bobby Orr, had almost become bankrupt, after what Eagleson did to him. I lined up with a 1960's Chicago Blackhawks leather coat, which I was offered 6k for, back then by the hall of fame I politely declined. I waited 3 hours to get an autograph from Orr. The Hall of Fame when I was finally about 5 minutes away from meeting Orr said, thats it, its over. Orr told them he would never come back if the remaining people didn't get to get their autographs. I got within five people of him and started crying like a fricking baby. It was like meeting Jesus's brother or something. Never felt anything like that in my life. I handed him a paper and said on the piece of paper, give me an amount I will give it to you. He just smiled and and shook his head. His hand was so rough and so strong, that sort of blew me away too. What a freaking player. What a guy. What a man. As far as the best player of all time. I think we have an amazing top two or three or four. Gretz and I met many times, I have to say he was pretty insane as well. The best three or four were divine is all I want to say.
I LOVE the way the crowd got LOUDER whenever the announcer tried to stop the ovation!!! : "Ladies and gentlemen" then the audience took it up a notch!!!!
I remember this night watching before cable on WSBK Channel 38 in Boston with Fred Cusick and Johbny Pierson. I did everything I could not to cry in front of my dad and brother. Bobby Orr and his teammates are so loved by. Boston. The joy they brought to us was insane. There is no debate Bobby Orr was, is, and will ALWAYS be the GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER EVER. Somewhere on youtube there is a clip of Bobby Scoring a goal for his 100 th point which was never done before by a defensemen. It was a shorthanded goal against Detroit. On the ice at the time for Detroit was, HOF Gordie Howe, HOF Frank Mahovlich, HOF Alex Delveccio HOF Roger Crozier.
i was 10,there with my dad,the first time i ever saw him cry,may be one of the best nights of my life,we blew the roof of the joint!! it was amazing, ive got goose bumps just remembering........
Bobby Orr is to hockey what the Pilgrims are to the United States..he started it all. Growing up on Cape Cod we had to get up on the roof and spin the antenna to get Ch 38 to watch the games. Boston loved Orr and Orr loved Boston. Boston loved the Bruins. Nothing the Red Sox and Patriots can ever match in this era of free agency and corporate packaging. I got to see Bostons greatest athlete EVER....thanks Bobby!!!
This guy is the reason I played hockey. My dad never played hockey growing up but loved the Bruins and Bobby Orr. He was at game 4 in 70 as a 13 year old. I was pretty good too. Still only 1/1000 of a player Orr was though.
He’s the reason millions of kids played hockey. Those sprouting rinks all over Massachusetts are the reason the US won the gold medal in 1980. Bobby Orr is a god.
Who can forget the poignancy of this moment. The greatest hockey player who ever lived - now gone into history. We shall not see the likes of him again. Thank you for the memories, Bobby.
I believe that the following point has been researched, but I can't remember the source.--- THIS IS THE LONGEST STANDING OVATION, ACROSS ALL SPORTS, IN THE RECORDED HISTORY OF SPORTS!!-----THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A LONGER ONE IN RECORDED HISTORY!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU B.O.G. !!!!!!!!!!!
just to think how much Orr accomplished and yet had to retire at 30-if his knees hadn't been as damaged as they were he could have played for another 8-10 years easily
I remember living in Chicago back 1978 when Bobby played for the Hawks. I do remember Nov 8th when he announce his retirement from Hockey!!! I was on school bus when I heard it on the radio live!!! A sad day for Hockey. I saw the ceremony on TV 2 months later on NHL 79 on ch 44 WSNS!!!
@AEMoreira81 I read a quote by a long time NHL trainer who said 1971 was the last year he was really, truly healthy. Still went on to do all he did on those bad knees, which is incredible.
My mother made me switch the channel over thirty years ago, so that she could watch something else. Thank God for UA-cam. I've never seen this in its entirety...until now.
I remember watching this in 1979. Even then I thought, "Did the Bruins' management seriously expect just a little bit of polite applause and a brief ceremony?" How do you say thanks to a living legend adored by millions?
All u have to do to know why this guy is the true greatest of all time is go to the capital of hockey Toronto. Went 2 see final Bruins/Leafs game in the old Maple Leafs Garden. Leafs pulled out all the stops introducing greats for both teams past & present. The guy who got the longest & greatest ovation in Toronto that evening ~ you guessed it, Bobby Orr! Not even Gretzky got ovations like that at arenas where he never put on the sweater. Not even in Toronto where he was a local kid too.#Respect
Like the late great Bruins broadcaster Fred Cusick and of course Johnny Pierson often said during Bruin games, LISTEN TO THE FANS! You just did. He was and still "IS THE BEST" Thanks BOBBY!
Bobby Orr’s final full season was 1974-75 when he won his second scoring title and ended when he had just turned 27. Most players are just entering their prime at that point. He played 36 more games over the next 4 seasons where he scored 45 points.
@Madisonrvr "the humility of Orr, Gretzky, Mario, all these hockey greats is miles above these chest pounding jackasses in the NBA and NFL." amen brother! I just linked to this video from a Bill Simmons column about the Bruins cup. I don't know much of anything about hockey, but I know that Micheal Jordan didn't get this kind of ovation when he retired, or went into the Hall, or anything. Only a really humble person could trigger this kind of response from strangers, even if they're fans.
I was a New York Ranger fan. I hated the whole Boston Bruin team with a passion.... except for Bobby Oor.. I only slightly disliked him...😂😂...He was a helluva hockey player.
Greatest ever, period, and the humility of Orr, Gretzky, Mario, all these hockey greats is miles above these chest pounding jackasses in the NBA and NFL.
Those knees really betrayed him...look at Bobby, just 31...he should have been in the prime of his career, instead of seeing his number being raised for a great but way too short career.
Yeah, he was two months shy of his 31st birthday here. If there's such a thing as a crying shame, it's that the world was deprived of seeing Orr play well into his thirties.
Habsfan, Great to see that you enjoy the greats...great rivalry!!! But we in Boston hate the C's as an entity....but respect your greats as much as the game as well......Play on!!!!!!
@WatchVenusSpa Hard to argue with you, although I think Orr was the man who laid the groundwork for Bourque, Coffey, etc, to take it to the next level. As Gordie Howe said, the biggest disappointment in the history of the NHL was the too-early departure of Bobby Orr. Imagine what the recordbook would look like if Orr was healthy for 20 years? Glad we had him when we did.
all the teammates look at him and say "goddamn, finally WE'LL get to score some goals" Bobby ruled. Too bad the NHL doesn't have players like that today. every game is boring. you don't see guys like Bobby today, going around the ice rink 5 times and then scoring a goal...
Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux..in that order..but it says a lot for Orr considering he rarely if never got to play at 100% sadly..but we were blessed to see what we did see
i agree with you as i'm a huge Orr fan, my all time hockey hero. Although, I've spent a lot of time in Indy over the past 2 months on business and I'm starting to wonder about the reaction Peyton Manning gets when he comes back, either as a player or when he retires. It may be Orr-esque.
@Madisonrvr Based on the career he had I usually put Orr a cut below Ray Bourque based on body of work on Ray's end. (22 years, most at the top or close to it.) Not a knock against Bobby, I just put Ray a little higher up.
I bleed the blue and white of the Maple Leafs, but I don't care what anybody says,Orr is the greatest hockey player of all time.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this. This applause is genuine, direct from the hearts of those that saw him play, wearing the Black and Gold. We love you Bobby!
I've never seen a ovation like this my eyes are tearing and my spine is tingling...
He earned ever second of that standing ovation!
I remember that night like it was yesterday. He was and still is the Greatest ever.
He's he is.
Wow ... what thunderous ovation -- and Bobby deserved every minute of it!

OH WHAT A NIGHT. The greatest ever. Gets the longest standing Ovation ever. This shows how much this Town loved Bobby Orr. And still does to this day.
I must have seen this video a hundred times and I end up teary eyed every time . The guy was one of a kind original as classy off the ice as on it..!! God bless Bobby Orr!
For some reason this guy was very popular in Boston...Orr was the greatest hockey player of all time. Period.
For some reason? Because he was a better person than a hockey player. And yes, the best ever at that.
@@hermit6208 dude whoosh... its sarcasm
Behold the greatest hockey player who ever lived!
I watched this growing up in my youth; if Bobby hadn’t spoke they would’ve continued cheering and applauding! Orr was the greatest!!!
Greatest of all time. The fans didn't stop screaming. You'll never see another fan reaction like this towards a player in the history of all professional sports. He was a gentleman of the game and the greatest hockey player of all time.
the greatest allround player ever...........
My dads favourite player he always use to say to me as a kid “NO ONE IS BETTER THEN # 4 bobby orr lol
Incredible! The crowd just going wild for the longest time! What a tribute to a tremendous player!
