- This year the mining tailing's from the Long Lake gold mine are supposed to be removed and the area reclaimed.
The mine opened in 1908 and operations continued until 1937.
The arsenic from the gold mines tailings have been contaminating Long Lake since operations began.
We went out and documented and explored the old mine site and tailing's so that people will be able to look back and remember what was once there after it has been removed.

My grandfather was a miner. Also my great grandfather. I'm pretty sure this is the mine my great grandfather worked at back in the day so thank you for uploading.

So cool. Maybe your family has some pics hidden away in some box somewhere of him at work at that mine. Maybe even are secret stash of a nugget or two. Wouldn't be the first time a gold miner brought his work home with him. Lol
My Family sank all mine shafts in Sudbury and Surrounding areas.

I've been catching up on your older videos and it's cool to see how much you've progressed over 2 years. And this is a perfect example of the old saying learn from history or you're doomed to repeat it. And just think in 2 years Jay will be the bottle King.
We have changed a bit in the last couple years that's for sure 😄😄 Hope you're still enjoying them! If you seen jays appartment right now it's doubled in bottles since we last filmed it. Lol!!!
@@Adventurous4Life I was wondering if they had started the clean up yet. It looks like a really beautiful area. Maybe some of the rivers have gold in them you could do a gold panning video.
They haven't. Apparently theres been a land ownership change too. The area has been posted private now and last we were there lots of being destroyed sadly. Another historic area lost sadly :(

There used to be a cabin out there too.. when the trail leaves road and goes into the tailing pond befor the big open hole.. walk into the bush on the right side and up the hill it’s up on the ridge..it’s a tin cabin manybe 10x10
By the trail to the second tailings pond before the open hole? Never walked to the right that way before frkm the tailings pond. If we are out that way again we'll have to check it out and see if anythings still there!

I remember coming here with my dad as a kid he took our 1991 suburban all the way to the hole and we camped out!
Wow!! The shape this trail is in now I wouldn't recommend bringing anything but an off road vehicle lol! Very cool story though!
I’ve been there many times.. buy atv and boats.. when you got to the T in the road near the black gate if you turn right it goes to the end of the lake and all the way to penache lake road...
Iv always wanted to walk that trail but I only go there in the fall or spring so there's no bugs. It's always wayyy to muddy to enjoy the walk to go that way!

If you're referring to the meteor that created the Sudbury basin, indeed we do live in it 😄 so much history in the area it's awesome!

Yep! And it's about a 4km walk in from there! Very muddy trail!
the round honey comed vats were where they put the oar and poisons to separate out the gold... love to dig to the bottom of one and see if theres any gold left?

Its possible the dome with the 1911 could have been the porthole to the mine or the entrance to the top of a shaft which is now capped. Most headframes tend to have the year the shift was sunk or completed displayed on it.
You'd think eh, but there was no shaft there. It was just the mill. The shafts where farther away from the mill by the pit. Very interesting structure there though, and odd the date is on it. It is right next to the old rail line they had to deliver the ore though.
@@Adventurous4Life very interesting! You know..I work at north mine and in.behind there are countless old OLD buildings..old roasting beds..etc.. Anyway without mentioning names a person there was telling me he went for a ride and found these super old building way WAY back there and the old pipes and valves had actual Swaztikas on them. Not bcuz INCO supported nazis but because long b4 ww2 b4 Germany went crazy Wed buy certain parts off them..I guess valves must have been smth we got from there b4 we became enemies for awhile and cut them off. Also..I worked at Frood mine. Did you know there was a town there and small airport? And at stobie mine there are actual donkey stalls u can see that still have hay. In our computers at work you can still lookup the actual legit procedures on how to properly sling a donkey to lower him underground. No sh#$! There's amazing historical stuff all around our city under our noses and literally under our feet.. I wish you guys could get permission to go back there or send your drone and make vids. Cool thing is that all the roads are actually maintained..no walking through mud. I mean..u should check into it. Cool stuff man! Cheers boys! (And muffin)

Wish we had access to some of the old sites Vale owns, but we have tryed contacting them in some cases, they seem very positive about it then eveeything falls through... But lots to still be exploed all over the city!!

Dont recommend going here anymore as there is a new owner and no trespassing signs have been posted. The areas basically lost to time now.

Recommend against that sadly. Apparently there are new owners of the property since 2 years ago. They have private signs up and trail caneras on crown land and the public roads to get license plates and pictures of people going in. It's been lost to exploring sadly....
I'd understand why, geological testing indicated .17 ounces per tonne of gold remains in the tailing
The tailings are crown land not owned. The actual mine site/settlement is owned. Could walk to the tailings all day long with no issue. Although they have signs there from what ive hurd but they arent owned by the same people as the mine.
@@Adventurous4Life still will go check out the tailings, I've seen reports of small concentrations of fine gold within the tailings, looking for something to do so going to check it out

You should pan the tailings and see if they missed some gold.
They probably did but the tailing are really toxic and not somthing id want to be working in lol! 😄

Dont worry! The only time she was in that water was to cross that creek. Other then that we made sure she didnt drink any of it. We had a dish for her to drink out of from our bottled water we brought.
Ugh...... Update...muffin survived and is also thankful for having an owner who is out exploring instead of playing video games and ignoring her..him....I dont know...sorry boys.. not sure if Muffin is a he or she. Don't matter...Muffins happy. Gd enough.
How do I get here
Sadly this area is lost to exploring as far as I know there's apparently a new owner and there's private property sign up. Theres also trail cameras on the public road and crown land around it getting photos of anyone who goes. Dont recommend going now Sadly.

We went in the spring because everything was damp. There was no dust particles in any wind because of this to breath in. We also had a dish for Muffin to drink out of from our bottled water :) .

@@heinzhubbuch9409 muffin is picky, lol! When ever she wants a drink she will jump at you! We had a collapsible dish and bottled water for her as well as us! She definitely enjoyed the long walk I can tell you that!
@@Adventurous4Life Don't bother explaining yourselves guys. They obviously don't realize anyone living here that has bathed or drank water has bathed and drank water with some of that water in it. Its been tested regularly for a century. You just keep bringing Muffin with you and doing what you like to do. Muffin couldn't care less about kill counts on Call of Duty...but Muffin likes being with you on adventures. Haven't seen any two headed wolves or fox or coyotes moose, bear Rabbits or countless other animals around there have you? Me either. In fact..nobody has.
drone footage ... .that's what i'm talkin' abt.... to think ... regardless how toxic these sites were the engineers and investors would have had line ups anytime they were hiring.... pleasure before pain always .... mortgage needs to be payed ... children fed and toys bought and upkept... survival !!!
Lol this time ya 😄😄 although you now need a drone pilots licence to fly these! Back when we filmed this u didnt. So we kinda scrapped the drone idea now.
But crazy how waste was delt with back then! Put it where ever and forget about it lol! Lots of environmental impact from these old places to this day.
At one time...believe it or not.. Germany owned the mines in Sudbury and took boatloads of metals abroad and made bullets and bombs etc.. with them. Then men from Sudbury went and helped fight them. In ww1, it's been said, there's a high possibility that soldiers injured or killed had been shot by bullets made from metal that was mined in their very hometown and possibly even by them or their friends and relatives. This wasn't the case in ww2 though. After vimy ridge etc.. This scenario was reversed.
your putting your life at risk for being there.. all the chemicals and dusts are on the rocks trees and in the air.
People are using that water there for their drinking water. The lake nearby has tested over the safe limit levels of arsenic. It's not so bad just walking around it. As well it was spring and everything was extremely wet. No dust was present when we went from any wind. There was supposed to be a clean up starting on the area but I have hurd no new news of it happening yet sadly.
You do realize there’s a thing called rain. The arsenic is not on the trees and rocks.
The sand if kicked up and inhaled is toxic but otherwise fine to explore the area...been drinking long lake water my whole life...

Those chemicals are monitored and have reduced by around 75%. The rain over the last 100 yrs has washed it down below the surface soil. Think of hosing down salt on your lawn. Eventually...its melted and gone. The ministry would have the entire place fenced off and signs everywhere if it were that toxic that a walk would kill you. There are tailing ponds in copper cliff that go further than your eye can see. You wouldn't believe it. You get lost back there. There are ppl who's job it is to be in those tailings every day and trust me..they're much more fresh than these. I think Muffin and the boys will be just fine. Muffin thanks you for your concern though. :)
The dog is drinking water are you not concerned
She's over 13 years old at this point. The one little drink didnt do to much 😄 But the hundreds of people drinking out of the lake daily still, that's what id be concerned about lol.
