That is one tough cookie. True adventuring and plugging on, you don’t get those memories and spiritual growth with plug n play credit card hopping electronic refrigerated social media and movies on board, autopilot “ cursing “ . Unqualified respect, sir
I knew Ant, seems like a lifetime ago. Got to know him during a Laser regatta at Point Yacht Club in Durban in the mid/late 80's. One day while we were all drifting around in no wind, waiting for the start, Ant shows up on an L26, sailing through the fleet of Lasers, blasting Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" from a boombox, like that scene from "Apocalypse Now". Good memories!
Absolutely amazing. No sunburn, no weight loss, open boat,. you usually see sailors with rough skin and complection. He must have had some wonderful skin products . That boat is amazing it carried enough water and food for 56 days! So much to understand
Anthony Stewart was/is a very good sailor and when he was wrecked on surf island only had 2 weeks of medication for a auto immune disease and then he would die...he recorded a fairwell message which we did not include in the doccy and he had lost around 35kg...many things are not visible in the film as HD had not yet been invented.
Ant moved to the US if remember correctly. He setup a company delivering yachts built in Cape Town to the rest of the world. I will check on my Facebook I think he’s one of the “friends” I have who never post. To me this was one of the most remarkable sailing feats ever. His grit and tenacity is second to none. I still regard him as a hero.
Hm .. how it was possible when big and strong ships time to time are despairing in the oceans and the sea... He was a big sailor but very lucky too :) Congratulations!!! A very good video, thx for posting it!!! ⛵⛵⛵⛵
Small yachts are far more oceanworthy than large ships. The ships are viciously stressed by sitting on top of big waves, with their ends hanging, or bow and stern on top with the middle hanging. They can't lift their bows fast enough to ride up and over a big wave, and if they drop bow after cresting one, then they can dive into the two hundred ft face of the next, suddenly experiencing hundreds of psi of pressure on Hull and decks. Plus the steel they are made of is very poor strength to weight, and welds fatigue and corrode, giving them a working service life of less than a few decades. Small yachts respond fast and ride up and down over waves without drama. This is far safer than a cruise liner. The biggest issue he had to face was being singlehanded with the sleep deprivation. Probably the real cause of gut and skin infection issues he faced.
@@Maungateitei yes I know, you are right but his boat was not a strong one at all like these our Swedish boat builder make: www.youtube.com/@SvenYrvindExlex and as you said it was open.. not boat for big Ocean..
I've never sailed but surely. if a boat capsizes a guy on his own like this cannot right it? Can someone explain because the voice-over said he capsized?
Not an expert but, when the boat is so small and most of the weight will be in the cast iron keel he had it would top back over, also cause its an open bout with hatches the air will be trapped inside giving boilency.
@thosoz3431 - yeah, cannot seem to save also. I save link, h'ever, when attempt to open, it opens an entirely different YT video. Very, very frustrating!!!
This is one of the reasons I do not subscribe to any of the modern sailing channels on You Tube. With modern navigation and a vast array of electronic charts and more electronics there is no real adventure. When I was at sea i was still using paper charts with Capt Cook as notation/author and we had one position fix every hour or so via a new thing called sat nav. It was real sailing by the seat of your pants. Must admit I havent heard of Anthony Stewart until now. The guy is a legend and they need to do a proper movie about him.
NO it has not...Chiles was in a 37ft ocean going yacht with a cabin, motor and modern facilities...Anthony Stewart was in a 19ft Open boat with no cabin...big difference.
Hi Gary and thank you for the support... Why, its a great question, one that alludes folks like me and you all the time... I lost a friend at sea beginning of this week, he was in his mid fifties, retired, comfortable and suddenly wanted to go sailing again...why?

Our memories are a perfect story aren’t they!! Ones we cherish and share for a lifetime 💙👍🏼
Its like “The Voyage of Madmen”. Awesome book….
Thank you for sharing!!!
Not even shelter from the elements.
No bed or kitchen. The greatest of all adventures.
This was a great part of the South African sailing history. Forever there and never to be forgotten

Thank you for sharing this documentary. What an iron will be must have!!
The "poem" you remembered from school is in fact a quote from The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, by T E Lawrence (of Arabia). Amazing trip you made.
What a fab story…what a man…fantastic footage…and superb story-telling… love this epic adventure!!!

Just bloody incredible. One of the most daring acts of courage I’ve ever watched.
I am so glad to find this again. I watched it some time ago and tried and failed to find it. Thank you. Its a great story
Thank you for sharing your amazing voyage,. With will power and endurance till the end. Congratulations.
Absolutely amazing! I remember reading about his adventure am am grateful that you have posted this video.
And he didn’t have a chart plotter MFD or weather routing service/info like today. No AIS. An amazing feat.
Just these factors you mention make what he did remarkable to the point of disbelief🤯. The skill, courage and will to have done this…..who, just wow.
Incredible story, with a happy ending.
What an astonishing story!
Thank you for uploading this. Very enjoyable.
Epic! Such an adventure to undertake. I dream of something like this but on a bigger boat lol.
absolutely amazing story 19ft open boat ⛵
What a film! What an achievement!

Amazing 🤷🏼♂️
Amazing!
Epic, inspirational!
Greatest human superpower = tenacity to survive
The quote was T.E. Lawrence, I believe. Was not a poem, though

Both problems solved ! Thanks
I have no problem with loneliness. Matter of fact people are a problem to me. Imagine I will be quite at home on the open ocean.
So basically he respawned on that sandbar 😂
Reminds me of 14 year old Laura Dekker and her solo voyage around the world in her 39 foot Junneau Gin Fiz Guppy.
those were the good old days.
Amazing story, what are the two ears for on the bow?
An epic adventure.

Well, the Vikings sailed all over in an open boat, as well as many other peoples.
Big big big respekt.
Waiting for : "To the moon on a bicycle."
In the steps of webb chiles
On a diferent level...
Ant. Legend.
And sailing Day and nigth around the world without a windpilot , what kind of human is capaple of that ?
terrific vid only spoilt by the dreadful song at the end
Been done by Webb Chiles

He is referring to Web Chiles trip around the world in Chidioch Tichborn--an 18 foot Dracombe Lugger--an open boat.
Did he complete the circumnavigation...@@ianbruce6515
WHY
Hi Gary and thank you for the support... Why, its a great question, one that alludes folks like me and you all the time... I lost a friend at sea beginning of this week, he was in his mid fifties, retired, comfortable and suddenly wanted to go sailing again...why?
So as not to have to go to a boring repetitive job and get away from people……that’s enough I think.raw nature and solitude!!!!
Why Not?
OK the audio is screwed - the level is completely wrong and the narration is only one one track (right ch) and then it jumps to the left .....
Thank you for supporting our channel your comments are appreciated. Oh the sound is actually a stereo mix...old school.
