    this is awesome!! what would be the best way to connect my server to a tv, though? i suppose there mustn't be a tailscale app for tvs

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  Місяць тому +1

      Actually there is a app for the TV of tailscale available I know fire tv android have it same goes for Google TVs you can install it and connect to your tailscale account and add the TV to your tailnet and you should be able to connect to your Media Server remotely as well
      Hope this helped 😁

      Oh so if i brought a firestick on vacation i should be able to use a tailscale app on the firestick and access my server to watch on the tv at a hotel?

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  Місяць тому +1

      @@alwin7086 yes exactly the tailscale app is available to download on the firestick just download the app connect the device in this case the firestick to the tailnet (tailscale) once you do that just turn on the tailscale and place the IP provided by tailscale that was given to your jellyfin server followed by the Port number that you used for jellyfin and it should open your server from home 😁

    actually i did all the same playback is smooth no buffering in the same network but when i change to mobile network or other wifi network playback is too slow, buffering all the time and cant even play on lower quality. mobile network and other wifi network has good speed no issue on there.

      As to your question did you make the jellyfin Server on another computer or a virtual machine so that the resources for that server are not used and just mainly focus on the server that will improve quality
      Because having the server in your main computer that you us might cause problem but having it on a virtual machine might make it more stable at least that what I would recommend for stability and since you are gonna setup remote access that will also help with performance at least for me it works I do get sometimes buffering issues on my mobile network but I think that's due to where I am sometimes the connection is good or the opposite
      I hope this helps clarify your question 😁

    Thanks ! How to access the server via iphone jellyfin app ?

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  Місяць тому

      You would need to download the tailscale app on to your iPhone once you do that and connect your phone to the tailnet just copy the IP of the jellyfin server provided by tailscale and the port number and it should automatically open your server
      Hope this answers your question 😁

    • @farkisaurin
      @farkisaurin Місяць тому

      Yes thank you so much. Anything i can do to improve the quality. As the video keeps on loading. ?

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  Місяць тому

      I do not think this is an improvement but you can also open jellyfin on your browser phone just type in the IP provided by tailscale and the port number 192.x.x.x:8096 and watch your videos from there at least for me it works better than the app itself
      And if you're gonna make jellyfin server. I recommend keeping it making it on a different computer or a virtual machine so the resources stay stable and just mainly focus on jellyfin

      On the jellyfin app go to
      Settings then Playback then you should see Video Quality by default it should be set to Auto you can change it from there but if the video is not in 4k originally is not gonna stream it in 4k just the default Resolution you have available then click Save to apply the changes

    For me Jellyfin works with windows but when I connect my iPhone with tailscale and try to connect to jellyfin with ip and port it does not work. On windows in works perfectly. Also I use the ip dedicated for my iPhone on tail scale and the ip dedicated for windows for windows. Idk what’s the problem then

    Hey Jeff! Love the vids. Could you make a video about how to access web apps that run on TrueNAS remotely? I have apps (Transmission, Netdata, etc.) that I can access on my home network, but I can't access them out of my home, even when connected to TailScale VPN mesh. I feel like I'm missing something. Thanks!

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks for Watching !!
      As to your question do verify in your case you mention the Transmission app, in the Network Configuration part of the app make sure you have Checked ✔ (Host Network) having this enable allows the app to be accessible via the ip provide by tailscale for your TrueNAS and also put the port number the default port number is 30096 for Transmission
      i Hope this helps your issue
      P.S Not all app will work with just enabling (Host Network) at least for me it causes me issues i would recommend going into Tailscale select the (machine) you have for remote access and there is a part down below called (Services) in that Area you will see the IP address of the machine you selected and different port numbers this section is telling what port are already connected to that IP Address.
      P.S.S The issue that i have confronted is that the port number that uses a specific app does not appear in (Services) of tailscale in my case trying to connect would give you ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED i am not sure how to fix this

    How do you setup this whit no virtuel machine? Ore how do you set up this virtuel machine. You say B here but not A?

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  3 дні тому

      Well you can also set it up on a physical machine but the main reason for the virtual machine is that, that machine alone is only focus is the jellyfin server so the good thing about that is all the resources on the virtual machine will work 100% just for jellyfin this makes it good so you don't experience lagging on the server when it loads your movies or shows

    Does the public ip generated by tailscale changes if you reboot your machine (host/server) not client

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  2 місяці тому

      If I'm not mistaken tailscale will keep the same IP address for 5 months and then it will change

      @@JeffComputerService Nice! Can we connect to the server without installing a tailscale from the client?
      Eg. I have a modified Nintendo switch that allows me to install homebrews, in my case I have installed Jellyfin, but there is no tailscale available for Nintendo switch, can we still connect to the server without the tailscale from the client?

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  2 місяці тому

      @@Gabo99 in your case you would need the (client) Nintendo switch to be connected to tailscale (tailnet) so it can find the jellyfin Server that is already connected on tailscale for it to work
      The other thing that you can do is you can install android on the Nintendo switch and download tailscale for Android and jellyfin for Android as well and that will work
      But in your case the server will only work on your local network for your Nintendo switch
      Hope this helped clarify your question

    What is tail doing? Is more secure? It give more anonymity? I can’t understand if I can use it in any way appart of opening ports of the router

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  2 місяці тому

      Well yes, it is more secure using tailscale you are not opening any ports in your Router, instead you are making your own VPN server with tailscale using this server, any computer you connect to it will have access to connect to it from anywhere and you can remove it at anytime you want 😀
      Hope this helps 😁

      @@JeffComputerService thx a lot, I see you don’t get many views I don’t understand why.
      Btw you can make a video that shows how to hide your own jellyfin server? Because i don’t want to get in trouble using jellyfin even if the film I have on is my own

    • @JeffComputerService
      @JeffComputerService  2 місяці тому

      Well technically use a strong password for the admin account you make on the jellyfin server and secondly setting up remote access for it using tailscale that is a VPN. you are hiding it and only giving it access to certain computers on your server if anyone wants to access your media server they will the IP address of it or know a account you made on the server the user and pass.
      Hope this helps 😁 answer your questions or doubts

    My jellyfine server not finded by tailscale

      See if you can find it via your local IP on your PC with the port number 8096 is the default for jellyfin and then after that try with the IP provided by tailscale and with the port number example (0.0.0.0:8096)
      How this helps

    • @Tech-Synthetic
