    The same happened with robocop! The Padilha remake brings the opposite message from the original! It's made to fit the narrative of "good" military absolutism of USA. The might is right ideology.

    • @peterp2153
      @peterp2153 4 роки тому +7

      I never got that idea from Robocop remake. I think that film’s mistake was existing, regardless of its merits or lack thereof.
      By that, I mean that the original is such a well known, well regarded,
      Singular classic that the remake would have an even harder time than most remakes in being compared to it. If there was never an original Robocop, then the newer film might come off better, though it would still be a fairly ordinary film.
      It does try to tell a different story, or at least have a different overall theme and character arc. Which is to its favor. But when it references stuff from the original, it tends to try and invert them or use them in a different way, which actually draws more attention to them. Like you’re watching and say to yourself, “Ahh, Padilla is clearly trying to reference the original film but invert those references.”
      I guess the problem of remaking that film is similar to what would happen if someone tried to remake Gone With the Wind or Lord of the Rings or The Matrix.
      The shadow cast by the originals are just to big.

      Oh gosh Padilha os so controversial here in Brazil. He directed two movies called "Tropa de Elite" that are about the police brutality on the favelas on Rio and organized crime. Even though the movie and even the main actor (Wagner Moura) says that the main character is a "monster", he still thinks he is a hero, just like the people here who thinks "a good criminal is a dead criminal".

      @@peterp2153 The problem is that bad reboots like Ghostbusters 2016 or Charlie's Angel 2019 is not only that failed to reach the level as the original, it can also damage the reputation of the franchise as well. This leads to the audience that the aren't going trust the studio about the reboots and remakes anymore as if they are tired of it, and demanded for originality. However, if you want to make a reboot that can be done right, then you should respect the original source material and the hatred towards reboots and remakes would be reduced.

    The thing about Zombies is that they generally represent the fears of the general public at that moment in time. For example, while I did not see the original Dawn of the Dead, it took place in the late 70's.
    Woodstock had taken place 9 years ago in 1969. The traditional values that had held up American culture were being heavily challenged and rejected. Hard work and quality tools and materials were being replaced with convenience and the "Mall Culture" of the 80's and 90's. So of course, the zombies attack in the malls, stripping you of your humanity until there's nothing left but a shambling, mindless mass of moaning meat staggering from store to store, looking for something (or someone) to "consume".
    Shaun of the Dead. 2004. The fear is that of complacency, and the consequences that result from said complacency. Shaun's girlfriend is leaving him because he's TOO content with his life and has no ambitions. His best friend is a lazy bastard who lives on his couch, and his roommate despises them both, though he himself is trapped in his own level of complacency, which ultimately leads to him becoming a zombie.
    Every zombie throughout the film is another person who lived a complacent life; the store clerk, Mary (the zombie), Shaun's own mother, the neighbors, and finally Ed (Shaun's friend). And even after the smoke has cleared, people use the zombies for the same menial tasks that they would have done when they were alive. Shaun and his girlfriend accept a life of mediocrity, and the whole message is that we're ALL zombies, it's just that some of us aren't dead yet.

    This video essay needed more citations from snyder's works beyond dawn of the dead and 2 seconds of Watchmen. It also should have noted how much Snyder has been influenced by Ayn Rand, rather than focusing solely on Hobbes; Snyder's repeatedly tried to make a film of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead to no avail. How did anyone think it would be a good idea to give Snyder, the ultimate cynic, the job of portraying Superman, the ultimate embodiment of Locke's humanist ideals?

    • @MichaelSaba
      @MichaelSaba  7 років тому +17

      You raise a really good point. I had thought about including something on Ayn Rand when I was writing the script for this, but I balked at making the video any longer because at the time I was still pretty new to editing. The objectivist / 'rational self-interest' lens does go a long way in explaining why Snyder's films are so philosophically muddled (or just plain confused, as with Watchmen).
      I think this is worth bringing up in the video essay on Joss Whedon I'm planning to release in the run-up to the Justice League -- thank you for the thoughtful comment.

      You're welcome! Tbh imo Rand is largely the 1940s iteration of Hobbes (like Hobbes sans religion), so focusing on the Hobbes wasn't a mistake or anything like that. I'm not sure if my initial comment conveyed how much I agree with and enjoy your video; it's really well made and convincing. Mostly I just would have liked a few more citations that show Snyder's cynicism, but maybe that's an indulgent ask of a video that's already 16m long.

    Snyder was inspired by Heavy Metal comics that care about ultra violence, nudity, and power abuse. I dont think he even cares about any deep message. He might love rain, sex, Jesus allegory, or apocalpyse dream sequences, but that is just his tropes that he know how to play with.
    When we realize that he identified with General Zod more than Superman in Man of Steel, we know something was not right with this movie.

    I have yet to have a positive experience with a Snyder fan. Not one person was like, "Yeah, I get how you wouldn't like anything about Batman v Superman, it's not for everyone, but I really appreciate Ben Affleck's performance, etc." Nearly all of them weaponize the tragic death of his daughter, evoke a vague air of persecution by referencing a receipt-free, "they mocked his daughter's suicide, therefore they aren't allowed an opinion," towards anyone who even mentions Superman. One person even got upset when I called out his oft referencing of their suicide prevention charity as a shield for criticism for all these toxic assholes that harass others. "That's not all of us, we saved lives!" Y'all want a better reputation, stop using the supposed good deeds of a few to defend the douchebaggery of the many. Call them out, end the dismissal of different opinions to the point of harassment, stop trying to invent a rivalry where you have to say insane things like, "Man of Steel destroyed Iron Man!", stop chiming into every discussion just to be contrary, stop yourself before you say something and ask, "Will this make other Snyder fans look good?" I dislike most of his work but enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake because if you swap out "western civilization" with "the human race, or at least all but the richest humans, and also like all biodiversity on Earth" you have a much more factual statement than the crap he believes. The disaster happens. The world goes to hell, and humanity uses it as an excuse to unleash their inner demons. And the people who survive are the ones suited for such a world, those who are happier in it. It's an expression of a desire to get it over with and just enjoy what you can while it lasts, because it's hopeless to actually plan your life around success here and expect to enjoy a single moment and not die filled with despair over your regrets. For a lot of people, their lives feel like a prison. When their normal life is destroyed and there's no hope for it anymore, paradoxically that is hope. By letting go of the hope you have for saving yourself or the world, you have access to the hope of enjoying the world you live in. Yeah, definitely nihilistic and cynical. But, if we already were thinking about socioeconomic and climate science politics as a person when we watched it first instead of focusing on the creator's awful subtle racism, there's a massively relatable story in there of a desire I think a lot of us feel pretty often these days. Sometimes it seems like it would just be better if we stopped this will-we-or-won't-we with the dystopian hell, because we're so tired of fighting this culture war that's sometimes just a straight up war. If it didn't matter anymore, the constant weight we feel on us would be lifted. For all the awfulness that requires, nobody is wrong for feeling the power of that idea. You go bad when you stop keeping the awfulness in mind. Otherwise, it can be a comforting fantasy for people to imagine a life where, regardless of how they have to struggle to survive, the current struggle is _finally_ over. The next one might suck even more, but at least it's something else.
      I'm fine with such matters being in a zombie movie (just... drop the racism!) but it doesn't belong in Superman.

    I disagree, but you’re entitled to your opinion, as we Snyder fans are entitled to ours. It’s freedom of speech. For me, Zack Snyder is my inspiration and why I want to be a director. I agree with some of the criticisms in this video. I do think he takes the politics a little hard sometimes. But with that said, I think you and a lot of people in this comment section could benefit on seeing positive analyses on Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. I’d link some, but UA-cam is anti-linking. They’ll just delete it.
    I’m not looking to start a fight. I just want to share my perspective on the whole matter. I think he is a master visual storyteller, but the Snyder Cut is proof that he is awesome at world building and character development when he’s not being held back by studios. I think the big studios are the real villains here, cutting the wrong stuff out of his work, so it looks like that he is a bad director when he really isn’t. I think, if some of his other less well-received films were to receive the director’s cut treatment, you all would see that his films are much deeper than you think. Again, you all are free to have your own opinions. I just disagree because I know that his films aren’t terrible. There are plenty of videos as to why. I probably won’t continue the discussion in reply threads, so thank you all for listening.

    I LOVE Zack's approach to film making. I wished we could have seen more of his darker realistic take on these stories, and not every movie needs to have humor. It's funny how you called him out on taking a lighter take on Justice League, and now we are learning that his original story could actually have been something amazing. Maybe the message should have been that studios need to stop interfering with the Directors, and let them tell their own story. Snyder does not get the appreciation he deserves. A movie that is remade or rebooted doesn't not mean it needs to stay with the same formula. It is simply a new way of telling a story. I feel gutted that we may never see the DCEU that Zack originally envisioned.

    This was an interesting video. While I agree that Zack Synder hasn't been the best choice for the Superman movies, I'm unsure whether you are against politics in movies altogether or just disagree with Synder's message in particular. The way your video ends suggests that you're against politics in movies altogether, but I'd argue that politics is in a lot of movies, including beloved ones like the Dark Knight trilogy back to classic ones like The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I don't like much of Synder's recent movies but I actually thought his take on "Dawn of the Dead" was interesting. (Yes I've seen the original.) Had he just remade the movie without changing anything, he would have been criticized for doing a pointless remake. For a remake to be worth making, they have to add something to it, including relating it to contemporary themes and concerns. You also cherry-picked the depictions of Islam in the opening - and admittedly, I do recall the brief image of the prayers in the mosque to stand out - but you omit all the other shots in between. I don't disagree that Synder might have been tapping into some of the imagery of the 9/11 attacks at the time but that's what movies do, though, because movies are not made in a vacuum. What projects get selected, green-lit, and how they are presented are influenced by its historical context. Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" clearly did that. Nolan's "The Dark Knight" was about how a vigilante should respond to a terrorist that goes around kidnapping people and posting videos. His "Dark Knight Rises" made definite allusions to the Occupy Wall Street movement.
    Anxiety about the fragility of society is not a recent concern, and not one started because of 9/11. It's always been there, although there are historical events that make us more aware of it. Back in the late 90s, there were numerous movies made about the concern for the end of the millennium, whether the collapse of society will be brought on by natural disaster, the apocalypse or technological failure. We're an uneasy species. We survive because we depend on society and a set of mutually agreed upon rules. That is arguably the basis of many comic book movies too. Both heroes and villains are archetypes. That's why they work so well and why they have continual relevance (when presented well).
    Zombie movies are political because they're about how fragile society is. And it's not just zombie movies, but any narrative that investigates how quickly society breaks down when you don't have a government to enforce it, from "Lord of the Flies" to "Battle Royale." To your point about Synder's message in "Dawn," I didn't personally read it as a glorification of violence but ask a question of "What would happen to society if there was no government to enforce the law and control violence?" In other words, I don't think he gives us a definitive answer in that movie. I would also argue against your position that "Dawn" was Patient Zero of the zombie trope. It was always there as a genre. You already mentioned "28 Days Later" in the video, which is agreeably better in so many ways and got people interested in the genre again. But it's always been a popular trope in video games. Perhaps part of the appeal is not just the social messages it contains, but the inevitable scene where you have to kill someone you love because they've been infected.
    To wrap up, this was a fascinating video to watch. I think I agree with you on many points but disagree that movies with political messages or imagery are bad. I also disagree that movies should not tap into a common anxiety. I'd even argue that that's what art is for. Without stories tapping into anxieties, we wouldn't have classics like "Frankenstein" or "Minority Report" (or any number of Philip K. Dick stories). I think they're inevitable and they can be done effectively.

    • @calistnway
      @calistnway 5 років тому +2

      platothepug I appreciate your even-handed critical response to the video’s theses, although I think it misses or misreads a few things about them.
      -the video seems to be arguing against politicizing comic book adaptations, not film in general. And honestly I disagree even with this assertion even under this narrower read, as I feel that superhero movies can run with a political subtext and still manage to be both entertaining AND do that subtext justice (cf. The Dark Night, Cap: Civil War, et al). At the same time, I think the video’s OP makes a very fair and warranted criticism of the way Snyder shoehorns his own political ideology into works that were originally built on a diametrically opposing political viewpoint, which leads you to wonder why he didn’t just choose something else to adapt that was more in line with his own worldview, as he did with 300, whose author seems equally inclined toward embracing fascism as a solution to societal ills.
      -your comment also seems to be treating the OP as criticizing Snyder’s DotD remake simply because it is rooted in societal anxiety. This is clearly not the case, as the OP explicitly praises the original DotD for the ways it addressed these same anxieties. The criticism of Snyder is not that he explored the same ground, but that he did so from the framework of a stable society whose anxieties were thrust upon it by an outside force, and that was in no way complicit in the conditions from which those anxieties arose; and for the ways in which the remake embraced violence as a rational and appropriate solution to resolving those anxieties, rather than treating violence and anxiety as symptoms of the same deeper condition that gave rise to both. It is, of course, up to the viewer to decide whether or not they feel that the OPs critique of violence as solution is a valid one, but it IS important to at least understand that violence is actually what is being critiqued.
      Finally, and this is just a little one, OP didn’t say Snyder helped jump-start the zombie trope-if that were the case, there wouldn’t have been an original DotD to remake in the first place-he was simply pointing out that Snyder’s DotD, along with 28 Days Later, kicked off the FAST zombie trend. And while you might be right that fast zombies existed in gamer culture (although none are springing to mind for me personally), as far as general pop cultural awareness and perception are concerned, fast zombies were not a thing to the average moviegoer before these movies came along.

      Sry folks, SP is very good and very important. It deals with very uncomfortable issues but uses imagery, that we are used to enjoy. This movie is not enjoyable or entertaining in a "traditional" way. A good starting point to decipher it is the work of the romanian psychiatrist Jacob Levy Moreno, the inventor of Psychodrama. Just a few keypoints: violence in psychiatry, oppressive elements in christian culture, systemic exploitation of the female body, sale of human rights, war as defining element of human culture throughout history. If you look at the movieposter or the dvd cover, you would not expect this kind of content. But this is the starting point of the subversive nature of this movie. In my opinion, the only problem of this movie is, that it is ahead of its time, maybe until today. That said, i do not disagree with Michaels points in the video. I am not a huge fan of Snyders work, especially the recent one, but Sucker Punch deserves a video with a huge red "THEY WERE WRONG" on the thumbnail. ; )

Especially compared to others like Whedon, Nolan or Del Toro, Snyder's "Action" movies especially are incredibly unsatisfying. They're so poorly paced blandly choreographed. He needs to stick to trivial popcorn flicks like 300 and leave monumental films like Superman and Justice League to more capable directors.

    I see the flaws in his work but regardless I like it.
    Interesting visuals/visual storytelling and dark yet engaging moments. He is a very rare director. For better or worse. He's still better than Micheal bay, Joel Shoemaker and Josh Wheaden at least imo. Art is subjective.

    Zack took my all time favorite zombie movie and completely perverted it. He took it's messages of the dangers of mindless consumerism, humanity's willingness to fight amongst each other during tough times, and made it about god punishing sinners or whatever. He completely ruined one of my all time favorite movies and either intentionally or unintentionally missed the point of the zombies in the first place.

    While the revelation that Zack Snyder ascribes to Randian philosophy seems to support your thesis. The presence of his authoritarian cynicism isn't nearly as clear cut as you make out. For example, at one point in the "Dawn" remake the characters _do_ get tired of their consumerist castle, they drop everything they're doing to rescue the (evidently now, helpless) gun store owner across the street from them, and they decide to do these things together. The Sarah Polly character is depicted as smart and capable, she - and some of the others - are locked up by the authoritarian CJ, whose individual leadership skills are found wanting. Eventually he learns a valuable lesson about trust, and behaves selflessly for the betterment of the group, even to the point of sacrificing his life. In many ways it hurts your theory to use Dawn of the Dead as the central example, when you consider that it is easily his most "hopeful" and "positive" movie (despite it's 'secret' ending.)
    However, Watchmen is another example. Most people have used Ozymandias' "victory" at the end of the movie as a springboard to critique the way Zack Snyder's political views sneak into his movies, because Ozzy seems like an ideal Randian character. You specifically cite the absence of a guilt ridden monologue - except you _don't_ relay whether that monologue was specifically absent from David Hayter's original draft of the script. Which was hailed as an accomplishment for how well it pieced together most of the elements of the original comic, in a semi-timely fashion. Meaning it might have been cut for time. You ignore that the equally fascist Comedian _does_ have a guilt ridden monologue, he's depicted as a broken man, who finally sees how things can go too far. - And the not terribly better Rorschach becomes instrumental in bringing to light the atrocities of Ozymandias, when in the final shot of the movie, his journal is depicted entering a press room. An act of defiance against an authority figure. By the end of the movie, both Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan or in some way proven wrong, and nobody of any note is ever proven right.
    All of Sucker Punch is about distrust of authority, and the invasion of people who abuse it.
    Over on Redlettermedia Previously Recorded discussed how Superman is depicted as this godlike icon, whose parents specifically suggest that he shouldn't save people, because hiding your specialness from others is important. Except, Superman doesn't hide, and he does choose to save people.
    Most of Snyder's movies seem to be counter to his political philosophy, in one way or another, which might explain why he rarely depicts any philosophy very well.
